Hull to Introduce Weekly Food and Garden Waste Collections from March
Hull City Council has confirmed that weekly food and garden waste collections will begin across the city from 31 March 2026, doubling the current fortnightly service.
The change is part of the government's national consistency in recycling programme, which requires all local authorities to offer weekly food waste collections by 2026.
What's Changing
- Brown bin collections: Moving from fortnightly to weekly (March to November)
- Food caddy collections: New weekly kerbside collection of food waste in a dedicated 23-litre caddy
- Free caddies: Every household will receive a free kitchen caddy and kerbside caddy
How to Get Your Caddy
Caddies will be delivered to all Hull households during March. Residents who haven't received theirs by 25 March should contact the council.
What Goes in the Food Caddy
All food waste can be recycled, including:
- Fruit and vegetable peelings
- Meat and fish bones
- Dairy products
- Bread, rice, and pasta
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Plate scrapings
Environmental Impact
The council estimates that food waste currently makes up approximately 30% of the average household's black bin waste. Diverting this to composting and anaerobic digestion will:
- Reduce landfill waste by an estimated 12,000 tonnes per year
- Generate renewable energy through biogas production
- Produce nutrient-rich compost for local agriculture
Waste services portfolio holder Councillor Rosie Sherwood said: "This is a significant improvement to our waste collection service. Weekly food waste collections make it easier for residents to recycle and will have a major positive impact on our recycling rates."
