Hull Fly-Tippers Prosecuted and Ordered to Pay Over £3,000
Two Hull residents have been prosecuted for fly-tipping offences and ordered to pay a combined total of more than £3,000 in fines, costs and compensation after being found guilty at Hull Magistrates' Court this week. The cases were brought by Hull City Council's environmental crime team, which has stepped up its enforcement activity in recent months following a significant increase in reports of illegally dumped waste across the city.
The first defendant, a 34-year-old man from the Orchard Park area, was found guilty of dumping household waste including furniture, mattresses and black bin bags on waste ground off Endike Lane. Council investigators traced the waste back to the defendant using evidence found within the dumped items, including addressed letters and delivery packaging. He was fined £660, ordered to pay £568 in costs and a further £300 in compensation towards the clean-up operation. The magistrate described the offence as "a blight on the local community."
The second case involved a 42-year-old woman from the Holderness Road area who admitted to depositing building waste, including plasterboard, broken tiles and timber, in a back alley behind residential properties off Sherburn Street. Neighbours had reported the dumping to the council's waste enforcement hotline, and CCTV footage from a nearby property confirmed the defendant's involvement. She was fined £500 and ordered to pay £728 in costs and £300 in compensation.
Hull City Council's portfolio holder for streetscene said the successful prosecutions sent a clear message that fly-tipping would not be tolerated in the city. "We have invested in additional enforcement officers, mobile CCTV cameras and intelligence-gathering capabilities to catch and prosecute offenders," she said. "There is absolutely no excuse for fly-tipping when Hull residents have access to free bulky waste collection services and household waste recycling centres at Wilmington and Burma Drive. We would urge anyone who witnesses fly-tipping to report it through our website or by calling 01482 300 300."
