University of Hull Announces New Engineering Partnership with Siemens

The University of Hull has announced a landmark partnership with Siemens Energy that will create new degree apprenticeships in renewable energy engineering and establish a joint research centre on campus.

The partnership, worth an estimated £8 million over five years, positions Hull at the forefront of the UK's green energy transition.

What's Included

The partnership encompasses:

  • New degree apprenticeships in wind energy engineering, with Siemens guaranteeing 50 placements per year
  • A joint research centre focused on offshore wind turbine technology
  • Summer internship programme offering 30 paid placements annually
  • Guest lecture series with Siemens engineers contributing to existing courses

Why Hull?

Hull's position as the UK's "Energy Estuary" — home to Siemens Gamesa's blade manufacturing facility and a growing cluster of renewable energy companies — makes it the natural location for this partnership.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dave Petley said: "This partnership is transformative for our students and for the region. It provides a direct pipeline from university to industry in one of the fastest-growing sectors in the world."

Student Opportunities

The first cohort of degree apprentices will begin in September 2026. Students will spend four days per week at the Siemens facility and one day at the university, earning a full salary while studying for a BEng in Renewable Energy Engineering.

Siemens Energy UK Managing Director Steve Scrimshaw said: "The skills gap in renewable energy is one of the biggest challenges facing our industry. This partnership with the University of Hull will help us train the next generation of engineers right here where they're needed most."
