North Bridge to Close for Weekend Resurfacing as Hull Council Addresses Deterioration

Motorists, cyclists and other road users in Hull are being advised to plan ahead as North Bridge will be fully closed for vital resurfacing work over the weekend of 21-23 March.

Hull City Council has confirmed that the bridge will be closed to all traffic — including cyclists and emergency vehicles — from 6am on Saturday 21 March until 6am on Monday 23 March. A second closure is scheduled for the weekend of 11-13 April. Pedestrian footpaths across the bridge will remain open throughout both closures.

The work is being carried out by Midland Industrial Flooring Limited in conjunction with the council's bridges team and Ashcourt Limited, and is designed to address significant deterioration of the bridge's road surface.

Why the work is needed

North Bridge is one of the key river crossings in Hull, carrying thousands of vehicles each day between the city centre and the eastern side of the River Hull. Years of heavy traffic have taken their toll on the road surface, with potholes, cracking and uneven surfaces creating increasingly difficult conditions for drivers and cyclists.

"The road surface on North Bridge has deteriorated to a point where it needs significant repair," said a Hull City Council spokesperson. "We know that closing the bridge is disruptive, which is why we've scheduled the work over weekends to minimise the impact on commuters and businesses."

The timing is also strategic. The council is planning ahead for the upcoming closure of Drypool Bridge, another key crossing further south, which is expected to place additional pressure on North Bridge and other routes. Getting the resurfacing completed before Drypool Bridge closes will ensure that North Bridge is in the best possible condition to handle the increased traffic.

Diversion routes

During the closures, traffic will be diverted via alternative crossings. The council is urging drivers to allow extra time for their journeys and to consider using public transport where possible. Detailed diversion maps and information will be available on the Travel Hull website and the council's social media channels in the days leading up to each closure.

Businesses in the area have been notified of the planned works, and the council says it has worked to minimise disruption as far as possible. However, with weekend events and leisure traffic to consider, some delay is inevitable.

"We'd ask people to be patient and to plan their routes in advance," the spokesperson added. "The work is weather dependent, so we'll provide updates if conditions force any changes to the schedule."

Investment in infrastructure

The North Bridge resurfacing is part of a broader programme of investment in Hull's bridge infrastructure, which includes ongoing maintenance and improvement works at several river crossings across the city. Hull's flat, low-lying geography and extensive waterway network mean that bridges are critical to the city's transport network, and keeping them in good condition is a constant priority.

"Bridges are the arteries of this city," the spokesperson said. "Without them, Hull doesn't function. We're committed to maintaining them to the highest standard, and that sometimes means short-term disruption for long-term benefit."
