Hull KR Hold Off Brisbane in Historic 30-24 World Club Challenge Win

Hull Kingston Rovers made history on Saturday evening as they held off a spirited Brisbane Broncos fightback to win the World Club Challenge 30-24 at a packed MKM Stadium. The Robins, who qualified for the showpiece event as Super League champions, raced into a commanding 24-6 lead before half-time, only for the Broncos to mount a remarkable comeback that threatened to snatch victory from the hosts in the closing stages.

Mikey Lewis was the star of the first half, scoring two tries and kicking four goals to put Rovers firmly in control. The halfback, who was instrumental in Hull KR's maiden Super League title last season, tormented the Brisbane defence with his running game and distribution, setting up further tries for winger Ryan Hall and centre Peta Hiku. The 12,500-capacity stadium was rocking as the Robins appeared to be cruising towards a comprehensive victory.

However, Brisbane showed the resilience that had carried them to the NRL Grand Final, scoring three tries in a devastating 15-minute spell either side of half-time to close the gap to just six points. Fullback Reece Walsh was at the heart of the comeback, producing two try assists and a solo effort that brought the travelling contingent of Broncos fans to their feet. With 15 minutes remaining and the momentum firmly with the visitors, the outcome hung in the balance.

Hull KR steadied the ship through the composure of veteran prop George King and the defensive organisation of captain Elliot Minchella, who made a crucial try-saving tackle with five minutes left on the clock. Lewis sealed the victory with a penalty goal in the 78th minute, sparking jubilant scenes among the home supporters. Head coach Willie Peters described the win as "the proudest moment in this club's history" and dedicated the trophy to the fans of east Hull who have supported the club through decades of ups and downs.
