Hull City Secure Vital Three Points in Championship Promotion Push
Hull City kept their Championship play-off ambitions firmly on track with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at the MKM Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Goals from academy graduates Will Mayfield and Kai Mayfield-Mayfield secured all three points for the Tigers in front of a crowd of just over 19,000, lifting the team to within two points of the top six with ten games of the season remaining.
The home side started brightly and took the lead in the 23rd minute when centre-back Will Jarvis played a long diagonal ball to the left wing, where winger Brandon Fleming's delivery was met by Mayfield, who headed home from six yards. The Tigers dominated possession throughout the first half, with midfielder Xavier Sheridan pulling the strings in the middle of the park and creating several further chances that went begging.
The visitors equalised against the run of play early in the second half, capitalising on a defensive error to level the scores and temporarily silence the home crowd. However, the Tigers responded with characteristic determination, and the winning goal arrived in the 72nd minute. A corner from the right was cleared only as far as the edge of the area, where substitute Kai Mayfield-Mayfield struck a sweetly hit volley that flew into the bottom corner, sending the West Stand into raptures.
Head coach Tim Walter praised the character of his squad after the match, highlighting the contribution of the club's academy in producing players capable of performing at Championship level. "These young men have grown up supporting this club, and you can see what it means to them every time they pull on the shirt," he said. The result means Hull City have now won five of their last seven league matches and will go into next week's away trip to Coventry City with growing confidence that a return to the Premier League is within their reach.
