Hull City Beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 to Tighten Grip on Championship Playoff Place
Hull City delivered one of their most impressive home performances of the season on Saturday, coming from behind to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 at the MKM Stadium and tighten their grip on a Championship playoff place. The victory was watched by 22,004 fans — the Tigers' biggest crowd of the campaign — but the afternoon was overshadowed by a worrying injury to midfielder Regan Slater.
Sheffield Wednesday took the lead after 23 minutes when Jamal Lowe finished coolly after a well-worked move, momentarily silencing the MKM. But Hull's response was almost instant. Just 60 seconds later, Matt Crooks powered home an equaliser, sparking the home crowd back into life and setting the tone for a dominant second half.
Owls undone by own goal
The second goal arrived in fortuitous circumstances before the break, as Sheffield Wednesday's Dominic Iorfa headed into his own net under pressure from a Hull corner. It was cruel on the Owls, who had competed well up to that point, but it was a reward for the relentless pressure that Sergej Jakirovic's side had applied since falling behind.
Kyle Joseph sealed the victory in the second half with a clinical finish that left the visiting goalkeeper with no chance, sending the MKM into raptures and all but ending the contest. Hull's defence, marshalled superbly throughout, ensured there was no repeat of the early scare, and Wednesday rarely threatened in the final 30 minutes.
Slater injury concern
The one cloud on an otherwise sunny afternoon was the injury to Regan Slater, who was forced off in the first half after turning his ankle in a challenge. The midfielder, who has been one of Hull's most consistent performers this season, was replaced by John Lundstram and left the stadium on crutches.
After the game, Jakirovic confirmed that Slater would undergo an MRI scan to determine the extent of the damage.
"We're obviously concerned about Regan," Jakirovic said. "He's been brilliant for us this season and we'll just have to wait for the scan results. But I know the medical team will do everything they can to get him back as quickly as possible."
The loss of Slater for any significant period would be a blow to Hull's playoff ambitions, with the midfielder's energy, tackling and ability to link play between defence and attack making him virtually irreplaceable.
Jakirovic hails character
Despite the injury worry, Jakirovic was full of praise for his team's response to going behind.
"To concede first and then score three goals against a good side like Sheffield Wednesday — that takes real character," he said. "I thought we were outstanding in the second half. The crowd were incredible, the players fed off that energy, and the result is fully deserved."
The victory consolidates Hull's position in the top six of the Championship table and strengthens the growing belief around the MKM that this could be the season the Tigers finally make a serious push for promotion. With eight games remaining, the business end of the campaign is approaching fast.
What next?
Hull's next fixture takes them on the road, where a stern test awaits. Jakirovic's side will need to maintain the form and resilience that has characterised their season to date if they are to convert their playoff position into something more tangible.
For the 22,004 who packed the MKM on Saturday, the message was clear: this Hull City team believes, and so should its supporters.
