Hornsea Inshore Rescue Overwhelmed by Public Response to Equipment Appeal
The generous spirit of East Yorkshire has been on full display this week, as Hornsea Inshore Rescue expressed profound gratitude after an overwhelming public response to its Amazon wishlist equipment appeal.
The independent volunteer rescue charity, which operates off the East Riding coast throughout the year, launched the appeal to source essential supplies needed to keep its crews safe and its vessels operational. The response from the public has far exceeded expectations, with donations flooding in from across the region and beyond.
Essential kit for life-saving work
Items donated through the wishlist include survivor blankets, a personal locator beacon, GoPro cameras for training and evidence purposes, 3mm neoprene thermal wetsuit gloves, and underwater writing slates. Critically, the appeal also generated vital medical supplies including haemostatic gauze, tourniquets, sterile wound dressings and disposable airway tubes — equipment that could make the difference between life and death in an emergency.
"We are absolutely blown away by the generosity of the public," said a Hornsea Inshore Rescue spokesperson. "When we put the wishlist together, we hoped we might get a few items ticked off. To see the response we've had has been genuinely emotional. Every single item will go directly towards keeping our crews and the people we rescue safe."
Volunteer heroes
Hornsea Inshore Rescue is entirely independent and volunteer-run, meaning it receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations and fundraising to operate. The charity's crews respond to emergencies along the Holderness coast, one of the fastest-eroding coastlines in Europe, where shifting sands, strong currents and unpredictable weather create dangerous conditions for swimmers, walkers and water users.
The volunteers give up their time to train, maintain equipment and respond to callouts — often in challenging conditions and at unsociable hours. The dedication of these individuals is a source of immense pride for the Hornsea community and the wider East Riding.
"People don't always realise that we're not part of the RNLI," the spokesperson explained. "We're a completely independent charity, registered number 1154954, and every penny we receive comes from the public. That's what makes this response so special — it shows just how much the community values what we do."
Rooftop Terrace Appeal continues
Alongside the equipment wishlist, Hornsea Inshore Rescue is also running a separate £400,000 Rooftop Terrace Appeal to fund major improvements to its station facilities. The project will provide enhanced training spaces, improved storage for rescue equipment and a community area that can be used for events and education.
