Freedom Festival Hull Returns for August Bank Holiday Weekend 2026

Freedom Festival, Hull's flagship cultural event, will return for the August bank holiday weekend (28-31 August 2026) with an expanded programme of free performances, installations, and events across the city centre.

Now in its 16th year, Freedom Festival has established itself as one of the UK's leading free outdoor arts festivals, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually.

What to Expect

The 2026 programme will feature:

  • Over 200 performances across multiple stages and venues
  • International street theatre companies from 12 countries
  • A new waterfront stage at Humber Street for music performances
  • Expanded children's programme with dedicated family areas
  • Hull's largest ever outdoor dance event
  • Food and drink village showcasing local producers

Headline Acts

While the full programme won't be announced until June, festival director Mikey Martins has confirmed "some of the most ambitious outdoor performances we've ever presented."

"We're bringing companies from across Europe and beyond who create truly unforgettable spectacles," he said. "Think fire, water, aerial performance, and cutting-edge technology — all completely free."

Economic Impact

An independent study estimated that Freedom Festival 2025 generated over £4.5 million for the local economy and supported over 200 temporary jobs. The 2026 festival is expected to have an even greater impact.

Getting Involved

Freedom Festival is looking for over 300 volunteers to help run the event. Volunteers receive free festival merchandise, training, and access to exclusive behind-the-scenes areas. Applications open on 1 April.

The festival is funded by Hull City Council, Arts Council England, and a range of corporate sponsors.
