East Riding Residents to Enjoy Free Compost Giveaways This May
Free Compost for East Riding Residents
The East Riding of Yorkshire Council is excited to announce the return of its popular compost giveaway events this May. Residents will have the opportunity to collect free bags of compost at eight locations across the region, starting from Monday, May 11.
Event Details
A total of 5,000 bags of compost will be distributed during these events, with approximately 60 tonnes expected to be given away. The compost is made from recycled food and garden waste collected from residentsβ brown bins throughout the year. The giveaways will take place in several communities, including Pocklington, Beverley, Preston, Goole, Hornsea, Carnaby, Withernsea, and Driffield, concluding on Friday, May 29.
Residents can collect up to two bags of compost, which will be loaded into their car boots by council staff for convenience. The events are designed to encourage local residents to engage in sustainable gardening practices while supporting the councilβs recycling initiatives.
Composting and Recycling Initiatives
Councillor Paul West, the councilβs cabinet member for environment and transport, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, βWeβre pleased to bring our compost giveaways back for May as they are always a big hit. East Riding residents have always been brilliant at supporting our recycling schemes, and that includes the recent launch of our weekly food waste collections, and we very much appreciate that.β
In February, the council began rolling out weekly brown bin collections of food waste to two-thirds of the East Riding, with the remaining households scheduled to join in February next year. This initiative allows residents to recycle not only garden waste but also a variety of food waste, including cooked and uncooked food, out-of-date items, and small amounts of sauces and gravies.
