Bridlington's New Murals Bring Vibrancy and History to the Town

New Life for Bridlington

Bridlington has welcomed two striking murals that are set to breathe new life into the town, thanks to a £125,000 regeneration project led by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. These colourful artworks not only beautify the area but also highlight significant elements of Bridlington's history and its local wildlife.

Celebrating Heritage and Nature

The murals, created by professional artist Sam Porter of Mural Minded, depict important local themes. One mural, located on the side of a building in Prince Street, illustrates a ship caught in the Great Gale of 1871, a notable maritime disaster. This artwork is complemented by images of local wildlife, including gannets, a puffin, and a lobster.

Another mural, found on a shop in High Street, showcases the Gansey Girl, a symbol of the town’s fishing heritage, alongside representations of the nearby Priory Church, a jackdaw, and a swallow. The designs were inspired by community input, ensuring the artworks resonate with local residents.

Community Engagement

The unveiling of the murals has sparked considerable interest, drawing visitors even before their completion. Social media buzz has seen people traveling from as far away as Oldham, Greater Manchester, to witness the artworks firsthand. Local primary school pupils have also had the opportunity to visit and meet the artist, enriching their connection to the project.

Councillor Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, commented on the project, stating, "These stunning murals are a real celebration of Bridlington’s history, heritage, and local stories. They have already attracted a lot of attention for the town, which is fantastic."

Enhancing Public Spaces

In addition to the murals, the regeneration project includes significant improvements to Westgate Park and Harbour Road. Enhancements to Westgate Park aim to create a safer and more welcoming environment. A new footpath has been established, lined with benches to encourage residents and visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Future updates will include new lighting and CCTV cameras, funded in partnership with Bridlington Town Council, to increase safety and deter anti-social behaviour.

Along Harbour Road, new benches have been installed, allowing visitors to sit and take in the unique atmosphere of this historic fishing port while enjoying views of the new harbour mural.

Lasting Impact

These revitalization efforts, supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, are designed to provide lasting benefits for both the community and visitors. The council's regeneration and funding team is committed to ensuring that Bridlington continues to evolve as a vibrant destination.

As Sam Porter puts the finishing touches on the murals, he reflects on the positive community response, saying, "The reaction has been massively positive. The amount of nice comments and people coming to look at the murals while I’ve been painting them has been amazing."

With these initiatives, Bridlington is not only celebrating its rich history but also fostering a sense of community pride, making it an even more inviting place for both residents and visitors alike.
