A major new BBC drama series will be filmed on location in Hull this spring, bringing a significant production to the city and boosting the local creative economy.

"Shy and Lola" is a six-part dark comedy thriller about two women who accidentally become entangled in a murder connected to the criminal underworld. Much of the action takes place in and around Hull's Old Town and Marina areas.

Key details about the series:

  • Six one-hour episodes commissioned by BBC One
  • Filming dates: April to June 2026
  • Key locations: Hull Marina, the Old Town, Humber Street, and surrounding areas
  • Production company: Sister Pictures (known for "Chernobyl" and "This Is Going to Hurt")

Cast

While the full cast hasn't been announced, the BBC has confirmed that two "major names" will lead the series. An announcement is expected in March.

Impact on Hull

The production is expected to:

  • Spend an estimated £3-4 million in the local economy during filming
  • Employ over 200 local crew and extras
  • Showcase Hull to a national audience of millions
  • Strengthen Hull's reputation as a film-friendly city

Hull City Council's culture portfolio holder said: "Having a major BBC drama filmed in Hull is fantastic news. It brings investment, creates jobs, and puts our beautiful city on screen for the whole country to see."

Local Involvement

The production team is working with Screen Yorkshire and local casting agencies to recruit extras and crew from the Hull area. An open casting call for extras will be held in March.
