New BBC Drama 'Shy and Lola' to Be Filmed in Hull This Spring
A new BBC television drama titled "Shy and Lola" is set to begin filming in Hull this spring, with production crews expected to arrive in the city from April for a shoot lasting approximately eight weeks. The six-part series, described as a dark comedy thriller, follows two women who become unexpectedly entangled in a murder connected to the criminal underworld, and has been written to be set specifically in Hull, making full use of the city's distinctive streets, waterfront and surrounding landscape.
The production is being led by an award-winning writing team and will be made by an independent production company working in association with BBC Drama. While the full cast has not yet been announced, the BBC has confirmed that several prominent British actors are attached to the project, with further casting details expected in the coming weeks. Location scouts have already been seen in the Old Town, along the Marina, around the Avenues and in parts of east Hull, identifying filming locations that will feature prominently in the series.
Hull City Council's film office has been working closely with the production team to facilitate the shoot, helping to secure filming permits, arrange road closures and identify local crew and supporting artists. The council estimates that the production will inject over £1.5 million into the local economy through spending on accommodation, catering, transport and the hiring of local talent and facilities. Screen Yorkshire, the regional screen agency, has also provided support through its Yorkshire Content Fund, which offers investment to productions that film in the region.
The announcement adds to Hull's growing reputation as a filming location, following a string of high-profile productions in recent years including Channel 4's "The Full Monty" series and the BBC's coverage of the City of Culture legacy programme. Hull's portfolio holder for culture and tourism said the city offered production companies "a unique combination of dramatic architecture, atmospheric waterfront locations and a proud community that genuinely welcomes film crews." Local extras and supporting artists interested in being involved in the production are being encouraged to register through the production company's casting website.
