Pets Page Each month, vet Dr. David Robinson from the Kingston Veterinary Group will be giving advice about looking after your pets. In last month’s Pets Page he talked about how it is vitally important to get your pet vaccinated against potentially fatal infectious diseases. In this article he looks at the diseases that are routinely vaccinated against. DOGS: Parvovirus, Distemper, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis, Canine Herpes Virus. We have been using a new vaccine against leptospirosis for the last 12 months which includes a new strain for the first time that we have seen in Hull that is deposited in deer urine. CATS: Cat Flu Viruses, Infectious Enteritis, Feline Leukaemia Virus. RABBITS: Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). Vaccination against infectious bronchitis – a disease similar to whooping cough – is also recommended for dogs and we administer this at the second vaccination. Dogs can get this disease anywhere but they are more likely to contract it in an environment where lots of dogs are sharing the same airspace, such as boarding kennels, training classes, puppy creches or even just in the park if it is a very ‘doggy’ area. Any reputable boarding kennel will insist on an infectious bronchitis vaccination before allowing your pet to stay, and some insurance policies taken out by kennel owners also make this stipulation. Of course if you are putting your dog into a kennel that does not insist on it, this is all the more reason for your dog to be protected. Vaccination against infectious bronchitis is an additional vaccination to the annual booster injection and needs to be administered by your vet at least 3 days before your dog goes into kennels. The vaccination lasts a year, so when planning a holiday make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date. We also vaccinate many dogs (and a few cats) against rabies so that owners can take them on holiday to Europe. Remember, it is just as important to vaccinate an adult pet as a young one. Vulnerability to disease does not go away with age. Some pet insurers will increase premiums if your pet has not been regularly vaccinated, so that is another important point to consider. Kingston Vets offer a range of “vaccines for life” plans to protect your pet. For example, a one-off payment of £99 covers a booster and annual health check for every year of your pet’s life. You can join the scheme when you bring your puppy or kitten for their primary vaccination courses. If you have any queries about vaccination you can ask us for advice. Local News Promoting Local People, Local Lives and Local Stories. Twitter: @hull_mag FREE Business Workshop Discover how to… • increase sales • invest your time effectively • implement better systems BOOK TODAY on 01482 227060 EAST RIDING DEMENTIA SUPPORT The East Riding Dementia Action Alliance aims to support communities and businesses located or operating within the East Riding of Yorkshire to take low/no cost actions that enable people with dementia to be active and involved. There are over 850,000 people diagnosed with dementia in the UK and 1/3 of people with dementia say that they do not feel part of their community. Everyday things we take for granted – getting to the shops, spending time with friends and family, getting money from the bank and going on holiday – are made difficult by a lack of understanding of dementia in our communities. That is why we must seek to change lives for the better not just through government, the NHS and local authorities, but by working with individuals, organisations, and communities. The Dementia Action Alliance would like to help businesses and organisations throughout the East Riding to create a dementia friendly community. The East Riding Dementia Action Alliance is calling for all public, private, and voluntary sector organisations to help keep people with dementia engaging with our community. We need your organisation to help support people with dementia and their carers to access all the things that they want to do, for example; leisure activities, to undertake their food shop, to buy their daily paper and to feel comfortable and confident reading it in their local café. Joining the Dementia Action Alliance is completely free and allows your business to become dementia aware, benefiting both your business and the community, and allows you display the ‘working to become Dementia Friendly’ logo on your website, letter heads, and windows as you wish. You can find out about our work at www.dementiaaction.org.uk, by following us on Facebook www.facebook.com/EastRidingDementiaActionAlliance or contacting the East Riding DAA Coordinator Emma Williams on 01482211255 or emma.williams@alzheimers.org.uk

All Glazing Backed By Our 5 Year Manufacturers Guarantee www.cloudy2clear.com Priority Freephone 0800 61 21118 ...we make saving money perfectly clear... STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING? Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes! Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager William Moulds feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hull, Beverley & Driffield areas and William is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give William a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help! The Creative & Cultural Column by Alan Raw Promoting Local People, Local Lives and Local Stories. Twitter: @hull_mag How to Enjoy Art Do you enjoy the arts? Do you know what you’re looking for in HMV, Waterstones or the Odeon? Are you clued up and confident enough to navigate your way towards more of what you like and discover new favourite songs, films or books? So what about the visual arts? It is not unusual when talking about painting, sculpture or photography for the word ‘appreciation’ to pop up. Are you the sort of person who truly appreciates visual art or are you perhaps one of the other lot, who may feel excluded, perhaps even intimidated or outraged when a TV art critic explains exactly why something that looks to you like the unfinished daubings of a not especially talented 5 year-old is, in fact, a masterpiece? The word ‘appreciation’ suggests not just enjoyment but understanding and recognition of quality. From what I remember from art and music classes, appreciation is what’s most important. As long as you understand and appreciate it, does it really matter whether you like it or not? That’s perhaps how we can end up publicly agreeing that Picasso was great but privately wondering why he didn’t put the eyes on either side of the nose. Even if you do enjoy a painting is it enough to simply enjoy it? Or is that just too superficial if you don’t also understand it? If an artist is trying to elicit anything from the viewer it is surely a response, rather than just understanding. Is it possible to fully understand a work of art? Do artists always understand their own intentions enough to explain them to someone else? The American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe, once said, “I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way - things I had no words for.” Many artists do what they do to satisfy some overwhelming urge to create, and having created they might as well put the finished article someplace where other people can look at it, and maybe someone will even buy it. The artist is most likely seeking a spark, a feeling, preferably a favourable one, but not necessarily. They want emotion, contemplation, even something visceral. So you are standing in front of that elusive work of art, feeling it stir something inside that you can’t fully grasp and you don’t really understand why it affects you. Well good. It is entirely possible to enjoy something without the need to understand it. We don’t need to understand astronomy or meteorology to enjoy a sunset or a have a grasp of botany to appreciate the beauty of a flower. The arts are surely no different, although some might insist otherwise. I enjoyed the David Lynch movie, “Mulholland Drive”, although I wouldn’t claim to have understood it. But what if that enigmatic piece of art leaves you cold? You can’t engage with it enough to be bothered to try to understand it. What then? Well perhaps you are in the wrong frame of mind or the environment isn’t conducive or maybe it’s just not very good. There is no reason why you should feel obliged to enjoy any work of art regardless of what anyone else says about it (although that can sometimes help make up your mind). It’s highly likely that some art will just not work for you. That doesn’t mean that you have somehow failed because you don’t like that type of art or that particular piece. In the same way that loving reggae and soul but not enjoying rap and opera doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate (good) music. Conversely, none of the above means that you wouldn’t get a lot more from a piece of art if you knew more about the work or the artist. I once heard some fairly dull but unusual music that was of little interest until I found out it was played by elephants on adapted heavy duty instruments. It didn’t really sound any better but it was suddenly more interesting and meant something different. When we enjoy or take particular notice of a piece of music, a film or a painting, we are likely to be more open to exploring further and learning about who produced it, when, where, in what circumstances and why. This, in turn, may enhance our enjoyment. I do believe that the more we learn about a beautiful thing, the more beautiful it becomes. And so getting a sense of the significance and meaning of a work of art is more likely to make one’s enjoyment deeper and richer. We should also, of course, consider the simple matter of exposure to visual art. The evolutionary biologist, Stephen Jay Gould, described the human mind thus: “The mind, basically, is a pattern-seeking machine… We tend to seek patterns… and then we tell stories about them. I think we’re pretty much conditioned to look for a pattern and to try to interpret it in terms of certain stories.” The greater your exposure to visual art, the more likely you are to see patterns, styles and statements. Just as so much modern music and film knowingly quotes the past, visual artists may share references that can signal the development of an older idea, make a political point or tell a joke. The more you look at visual art, the more likely you are to get a stronger sense of what you enjoy and what it means to you. Our interest in patterns isn’t all that we can learn about art appreciation from biology. Researchers at the University of Toronto found that viewing paintings triggered activity in regions of the brain associated not only with vision but with pleasure, memory, recognition, emotions and systems that related to the conscious processing of new information to give it meaning. Their findings suggest that our minds may be organized to engage with visual art. Art appreciation might just be a natural biological process. But unless you’re planning to become an art dealer I wouldn’t worry about all of this. If you’ve ever had the effrontery to enjoy a view of the landscape without so much as a Geology GCSE then you don’t have to feel like an imposter in a gallery. Trust your own reactions. Duke Ellington once said of music, “If it sounds good, it is good”. And if that elusive piece of visual art looks good to you, enjoy it and seek out more.

East Yorkshire Business Expo 2015 Please remember to mention when calling our advertisers. Thank you. Q&A: Networking Jane Gough of Dalton Spire Limited provides her top tips on networking, and explains the benefits to your business. What is networking? Basically, networking is when people with a common interest come together to establish and develop mutually beneficial relationships. Networking can be a highly cost-effective way to promote your business. Always remember – people do business with people. It’s about developing trustworthy relationships that can provide opportunity. No business is an island. Can networking really benefit small businesses? Networking is ideal for small businesses, especially if they’re looking to grow. It can help you find new customers and suppliers, as well as increase your knowledge. Be strategic in your approach and always remember that any relationship you develop must fit with your business objectives. What sorts of networking opportunities exist? Locally, local business clubs like Business Community Co-operative, Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce and 4Networking (all of these 3 are exhibiting at this years Expo). Nationally, business organisations such as the Federation of Small Businesses (also at Expo), Forum of Private Business and Institute of Directors sometime stage events; trade associations are also likely to offer networking opportunities. Events and conferences are worth attending, because they provide the opportunity to make contacts through sharing knowledge. They can also be good hunting grounds for sales leads too. How do I decide which networking events to attend? You must focus your networking activity, because it can take up a lot of time, so make it count. Being clear about your goals – short, medium and long term – can help you decide which events to attend. If you’re looking for sales leads, obviously, there’s no point going to an event full of other people trying to sell, for example. Before going, remind yourself what you need to achieve and use that as your objective. Is the old maxim true about networking – you only get out of it what you put in? Yes, you have to work hard at it. If you don’t contribute, you’re wasting your time. You must be honest and open with your knowledge – otherwise why would anyone share their knowledge with you? What about online networking and virtual networks? They’re ideal if you want to communicate with contacts before you meet them or if you need to meet people from further afield. Many people these days are using virtual networks such as Twitter and Facebook for business purposes, also some business websites have forums which can also be good for networking. What’s the key to making the right impression at networking opportunities? Contact the organisers prior to the event. Ask for details of attendees and create a list of people you need to speak to. Alternatively, tell the organisers which types of people you want to meet and then ask them if they’ll introduce you. Always arrive in good time, armed with your objectives. Should I prepare an ‘elevator pitch’ about my business? It can be a useful tool. Being able to explain quickly and concisely who you are and what your company does enables people to put you into context, which aids understanding and communication. Don’t be robotic in your delivery, otherwise you’ll bore people rather than engage them. Aim to come across as warm, genuine and friendly, and include a couple of nuggets of interesting information about your business, because this gives people something to pick up on. It can help get the conversation going. Obviously, if you already know people at an event, be sure to say a quick ‘hello’, even if you don’t need to speak to them. What about networking etiquette? Don’t be seen to ‘work the room’. Always make sufficient time to speak to people and listen to them. Be polite, not pushy. Avoid coming across as desperate, otherwise you’ll look like you’re only there for what you can get. Small talk goes with the territory, and the more practice you get, the better you can become. Do some research into really important contacts, because showing current knowledge of what they’re up to always goes down well. How do I finish conversations and convert them into leads? Tell people you’ve enjoyed meeting them; exchange business cards; and follow up with an email or phone call a few days later. If someone has requested more information, send it as quickly as possible. Once you have made contact, you must work at the relationship if you are to move it forward.

East Yorkshire Business Expo 2015 Top Tips for Exhibitors Before the exhibition It’s worthwhile letting your contacts, clients and potential customers know where and when you will be exhibiting. l Include details of the Expo in your newsletter or send a direct email to your l database inviting them to attend. l Add the Expo details to your email signature and of course utilise social media. l Use your Facebook page to promote the event details, show off your stand design l and preview your expo offers. l Tweet about the event, keep your follows up to date with your preparations and l connect with other Expo exhibitors and visitors using the @EastYorkBusExpo twitter l account or hashtag #EastYorkBusExpo Define your key objectives Consider the competition at your event and identify what aspects of your products and services are unique. Decide what you would like to achieve from your exhibition: l Build brand awareness? l Promote / demonstrate a specific product or service? l Take new orders on the day? l Gather leads and network to support future sales and marketing? Visual impact & branding How do you get your exhibition stand to communicate who you are & what you do, in the time it takes someone to glance at your stand? Intelligent use of graphics can communicate a powerful message in a single glance. Focus on the benefits of your products or services, keep text to a minimum. Create a focal point on your stand and ensure everything revolves around your overall message & brand concept. Don’t include time sensitive information if you intent to use your materials again. Jane Gough is a Director of Dalton Spire Limited, organisers of The East Yorkshire Business Expo.

East Yorkshire Business Expo 2015 Social media for the small business: Start by listening Social media marketing is about creating a unique voice to attract attention Here, Steve Mann discusses how to create a personal voice on social media. Small businesses owners are often quick to jump on social media to communicate and create a buzz around their business. But whilst an ad hoc approach in the early stages can be useful, mastering social media to successfully grow a business takes a little more strategy. Businesses often spread their presence thinly. Many go the whole hog with Twitter, Facebook and Google +, syndicating the same content across them all. This shows a lack of appreciation for the most important aspect of social media strategy: listening. Here are four tips that will help you focus your efforts on social media and help you build a presence with the right audience. Step 1: Know where your audience is Sending information without knowing where your target audience are engaging, will just add to the noise. By listening closely to conversations on a few different networks around topics relevant to the business, you can work out where your audience is most receptive. Monitoring industry trends, keywords and conversations around your business and competitors gives a business insight into which networks are best for engaging. For instance, a new restaurant would look for conversations about good food around their town. By working out where these conversations happen, they can target the desired audience more directly. In addition to general networks various industry specific sites exist, such as Zomato, Bake Space, or Foodie in the case of the restaurant. Listening gives you a clear idea of which networks a business can benefit from being vocal on. This provides a focus. In the early stages, you should avoid getting caught up in more than two or three networks. Whilst monitoring competitors is important, it is not necessarily right to mirror them. Only focus on the social networks where they have the most success. Promoting Local People, Local Lives and Local Stories. Twitter: @hull_mag Step 2: Gather insights Proactive listening can also help gain important insights. Asking yourself the right questions when starting to listen is essential to focusing this insight towards the most useful information. As an example of good questions to gain insight, the local restaurant owner might ask: l What are the most popular, most-talked- l about places for food in my town? l What are the issues that matter most to l foodies in my town? l What kind of food experiences do they l look for? l How do I reach and engage influencers l such as food bloggers? It takes time, skill and attention to find the answers to such questions. But the insights can help mould future business decisions to more accurately fit customer preference: whether that’s about the product, the most appealing offers, or how to organise events. Step 3 Engage and participate All social networks have their own style and unspoken rules. Knowing when to intervene into conversations without appearing intrusive is essential. The only way to learn is by listening. All interactions should provide some value to those participating in the conversation, and that doesn’t mean trying to sell. No one wants to hear from someone who is only concerned with pushing their own agenda. So, what type of conversations are good to participate in? Continued on Page 20

Avoid this unless absolutely l necessary. Remember these conversations can be about anything: don’t necessarily just approach conversations about products or the business. Being relatable is great for businesses trying to create a personal voice on social media: a friendly hello when engaging with relevant content can go a long way. Building relationships through meaningful conversations will transfer into better leads than creating noise. Some brands are great at capturing attention by creating content around the news, popular events or trends that they know their audience cares about. A great example of this was Oreo’s infamous ‘Dunk in the Dark’ image during the Super Bowl 2014 blackout was shared on Twitter and Facebook more than 20,000 times and garnered 525 million earned media impressions. Coming up with creative ideas in real time isn’t easy; aside from being clued up on all the trending topics, it takes a large dose of creativity. Businesses shouldn’t be afraid to experiment with social media. But it is important to remember that all communication needs to be aimed at and understood by the target audience. Step 4: Build a culture of listening Listening shouldn’t be a one man job – get the whole team listening. The advantages aren’t just for the marketing team. The sales team will be far more clued up about what support they can provide their customers. Anyone can stay tuned in to the search terms from their accounts, even if they can’t publish on behalf of the business. Business owners need to lead the way as the CLO – the Chief Listening Officer. There is massive value in stepping back and listening to what is going on in industry and amongst influencers. A team that is tuned in to what customers really want is far better placed to come up with better ways to provide a great service and keep them happy. Most of us start our own business having being previously employed and sometimes we take the employee mindset into our new business which can really hold us back without us realising. You believe that you are self employed but the reality is that you are probably working harder than ever, and to make it worse you are now working for a nutter! You! This presentation talks through the various aspects of running your own business, with suggestions and examples of how you can change the way you work to make you more successful. It will also challenge the beliefs that you have, and explain how we self-sabotage our own business’ without even realising it. This will be relevant to all business owners, but particularly those that are in the first few years of existence, those who feel that they have reached a point where they are working far too many hours and cannot see a way to make that change, or those that just cannot increase their profits, whatever they try. 11:30am Get Your Mindset Right - with Andy Lock: Free Seminar. Wedding Feature Promoting Local People, Local Lives and Local Stories. Email: ask@hullmag.co.uk Autumn Wedding Tips Our Style Editor Cori Adams shares her top ten tips for planning an Autumnal Wedding. 1. Embrace the natural colour palette that accompanies the season; rusty oranges, leafy greens and aubergine purples will set the scene for an autumnal celebration. 2. Make sure you plan your photography to get some outdoor snaps and capture the autumn scenery and colours around your venue. 3. With the daylight starting to fade earlier in the day, think about warm, romantic lighting for the evening part of your celebration. Tea lights and lanterns will create a lovely rustic glow. 4. Make the most of seasonal fruit in your choice of menu and sweet treats. Fruit pies of apples or blackberries work perfectly on a themed dessert table and veg such as pumpkin and parsnip will make a hearty soup for a starter. 5. Hints of gold and bronze are perfect for this time of year and will add a touch of luxury to your look. Metallics are still a hot trend for 2015 so opt for some opulent finishing touches to work with your colour palette. 6. Style up your reception with rustic accessories such as a wooden table centre display or a hand-carved cake stand – perfect for a woodland wedding! 7. When it comes to your wedding flowers, autumn is the perfect time to mix in berries and opt for a luxurious colour palette to highlight the change in season. Foliage such as astilbe and seeds such as scabiosa stellata will create a rustic looking arrangement and bring in lots of exciting textures. 8. Autumn is a great time of year to make cute DIY details and help stretch the budget that little bit further. Take a trip to your local park and collect twigs to make decorative wreaths, or conkers to use as place settings. 9. Finishing touches like hessian are perfect for creating an autumnal feel and can be worked into so many aspects of your wedding. A simple DIY table runner will transform your tabletop, or a cute hessian bow on your bouquet will help tie in the look. 10. As the autumn evening starts to draw in, make sure you keep your guests nice and toasty. A chill-out area with warm blankets is a great way to let your friends and family relax and warm up before hitting the dance floor... With more and more people wearing vintage and working it into their everyday wardrobes. It has also had a big comeback on the catwalk with many fashion labels on and off the high street adopting vintage garments or a ‘vintage look’ for their designs. But there are still those who are unsure of why they should buy vintage. So here are just a few reasons why you should be buying vintage and what makes vintage clothing so sought after. To be Individual Most items are one offs and it is rare to ever see anyone wearing a similiar garment. Not only that but vintage clothing is very different to the modern clothing we wear today, there are so many different styles and beautiful flourishes to vintage clothing that our modern clothes just cannot come close. For the Quality Vintage clothing tends to be of a much higher quality than what you see today. Quality fabrics and hand stitching mean that every garment has been made with a care and attention that mass produced modern clothing cannot match. For the History For a lot of people, vintage clothing is something to love and to cherish. They are a key to past times with every garment having it’s own history and every vintage garment particular the older pieces have a beautiful romanticism about them, quite often we won’t know the history of each garment, but it is easy to be swept away to past times when imagining swirling around the ballroom in a vintage gown. They decided to take insurance ‘local’! They now have four offices around the region and are building a loyal band of happy customers with their commitment to face to face, local service. ‘Insurance is a complex area’ explains Hedon Insurance Director, Paul Welsh (pictured) ‘I cannot imagine why people would want to arrange it direct, themselves and expose themselves to all the risks & pitfalls of not arranging it properly. By dealing with a local broker you get the benefit of being face to face with someone who is dealing with the subject every day of their lives – someone, who is working for you on your behalf.’ There is a perception that you may finish up paying more via a local broker. This tends not be the case however, as a broker’s ‘local’ knowledge can often work in their favour – such as in areas which have either flooded or are regarded to be at a high risk of flooding. ‘The best way to convince people that we are competitive is for them to give us a try. In our main markets, we are rarely more than a few pounds away from the best internet quote and often, because of our local knowledge, we can be cheaper. When you add in the value of dealing with somebody, face to face, locally (and how important that could be in the event of a claim) – we believe that a using a broker is great value’ Paul added.

them without a qualm... Clean out the greenhouse It really is worth cleaning out your greenhouse thoroughly now your greenhouse crops are over; it will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring! Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub all benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For effective fumigation, move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be pest free! Prepare your soil for next year Your soil is your most precious commodity, so start digging in compost, manure and as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. The earlier you start the better, especially if your soil is heavy. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! Planting With the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. Even in damp conditions it is worth checking the rootballs of shrubs and trees are adequately moist when planting - heavy rain will not necessarily penetrate a rootball that has been allowed to dry out, so if it feels light, plunge into a bucket of water before planting. Gardening: Sponsored by Heritage Landscape Centre To Contact please Email: ask@hullmag.co.uk or Telephone: 01964 503091 or 01482 420250 Gardening Advice for September/October In September/October, the autumn is now upon us and it feels colder. It’s a beautiful time of year, with the trees changing colour. Sometimes it may seem pointless raking, when the wind blows even more leaves onto the lawn, but just think of all the lovely leafmould you can make! Tidy borders Keep on weeding and have a gentle tidy up in your borders but do try to resist the temptation of a thorough spring clean. Leave seedheads for the birds if you don’t want to collect them and as much cover as you can bear for wildlife who will appreciate the winter shelter. Fallen leaves can be left to rot down (or collected for leaf mould), however diseased material is another matter; make it a priority to clear and burn it to prevent pests and diseases overwintering courtesy of your kind hospitality! Put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost. Start your compost If you haven’t already done so, start your compost going by buying a bin or building a partially enclosed area for a heap. It is vital to replace the goodness in soil after a hefty growing season and autumn produces masses of garden waste that will put invaluable organic richness back into the ground for next spring. Add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable and bedding plants, herbaceous leftovers, thatch, moss and cuttings from the lawn, weeds (but not the roots unless they have been through a shredder), hedge clippings, kitchen peelings and tea bags are ideal. Turn once a week or so if you can and NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material (such as diseased rose petals - heinous culprits) to your compost - it is a warm and welcoming nirvana for unwelcome guests who will reappear with a vengeance next year! Onto the bonfire with GRP FIBRE GLASS

To Contact please Email: ask@hullmag.co.uk or Telephone: 01964 503091 or 01482 420250 After all of the doom and gloom throughout the summer months we have reached September with positivity returning for most Hull City fans. Last season was a cock-up as they had more than enough quality players to avoid relegation but they threw away too many points in the last five minutes, we carried too many out of form players and injuries took away too many key players such as Diame, Snodgrass and Jelavic. As if relegation wasn’t bad enough the next worry was whether there would be a team left to rise again. Norwich proved it was possible to return within one season but would we retain the core of our side in order to do this. Norwich won promotion by keeping nearly all of their players besides Snodgrass ironically. Until the close of the August transfer window it was feared that most of the key players could depart. Ruthless cost cutting meant McShane and Rosenior were released as part of a post-relegation clear-out, Steven Quinn preferred the bright lights of Reading (or more regular games) and Ince, Brady, Chester & N’Doye gained moves. The next big issue was revealed by Steve Bruce during the first pre-season games. The players had all agreed to 30-50% wage cuts as a consequence of relegation and we were grateful that the £50 million+ wage bill would be significantly reduced to coincide with the massive fall in revenue. A wage bill of around £20 million would be in line with the parachute payments and reduced ticket sales. Steve Bruce however told us that several players had clauses within their contracts which allowed them to move on if a buy-out fee was met. These were met for the sales the four players during the summer and the big fear was that Dawson (pictured left), Davies, Diame or Elmo would be lost during the final hours of the transfer window. Such has been the decline of Tom Huddlestone that no-one came in for him and no- one was too concerned if they did. Thankfully the only player to leave was Jelavic who we were glad to see the back of. If his attitude was right he could run amok in the Championship with 20+ goals but he wasn’t interested so off you go.. This saga could continue into the January window but least we have the basis of a good squad until January. The start of the season has not been too inspiring, lots of new players coming in, established players in 3rd gear and the side yet to click. However we lie in second position and but for a 98th minute goal at Charlton and yet another McGregor mistake we would be top of the league. The main reason is that the teams we have met so far lack the ability to beat us especially being able to penetrate the central defence of Dawson and the rejuvenated Davies. We are not playing too well yet but if we keep racking up clean sheets, confidence builds and we get both Diame and Snodgrass fully fit then we should be aiming to automatic promotion. New signings of Akpom (pictured top right) and Diomande may be able to snatch some goals and Hernandez who remains here by default may finally come good as a £10 million player? Half the Italian league were apparently chasing him during the summer but no one would stump up the £6 million to take him off our hands. Unlike Jelavic he does at least put some effort in and maybe with increased confidence he may come good?. It has been great to see the return of Diame though bittersweet with thoughts of the team we should have had last season without the long-term injuries. Hopefully he can help lead us towards a promotion place by the new year as you expect a big team to take a punt on him in January if he plays regularly for the next four months. City also need to review the contract situation of several players such as Elmo, Aluko, Huddlestone and Davies could all walk away on free’s next summer. This will be dependent on how we perform till the new year. Deals may be in the offing if we are on the rise but offers may be accepted if we look like losing them for nothing anyhow. Oh yes we have to mention that our owners won’t be appearing this season following the second failure to change the name and alleged misbehaviour of fans. Least we can say that the atmosphere at the ground is more positive without their presence and associated chanting and we are not in the same chaos as the previous relegation. We have a squad capable of returning, the debts have reduced by £20 million and hopefully they can afford to pay the wage bill despite the fall in revenue. There is a long way to go but we have a side capable of challenging, there are no off-field distractions and a few derbies coming up too so you never know it may begin to be a more enjoyable experience again!? SUNDAY DINNERS – A THING OF THE PAST? Well I hope not! I don’t know if any of you have ever watched the American crime drama Blue Bloods. I must say it’s one of my favourites. It stars Tom Selleck as New York’s chief of police and patriarch of the Reagan clan, a multi generational family of cops. Anyway, as well as some great storylines, during every episode the family sits down for Sunday dinner. What I like so much about this is that Sunday dinner is something that many people don’t take time for anymore. For many Sunday is simply another day of the week, just an extra day to go shopping. I know that a lot of people work weekends, but the concept of sitting down together as a family any day of the week is being lost – and it’s a crying shame. It’s a time when you can catch up with each other, check that everyone’s OK and enjoy time together. I know it’s an important time in our house and even if we can’t have it at lunchtime we make time to have a later dinner. So if you and your family haven’t sat down to dinner together for a while, make the effort! And if you do the cooking, make someone else wash up! I knew there was something I was doing wrong!!!! IS IT AUTUMN ALREADY? Oh my goodness, where did the summer holidays go? And we had 7 weeks this time. It always drags at the beginning, doesn’t it? Then all of a sudden it’s all about buying new uniform, new school shoes, new pencil cases, winter coats – you get my drift! Back to normal, back to school, after school activities, homework, music practice and trying to find some “down” time too so everyone’s not exhausted! Remember, organisation is everything. Don’t forget to write everything down so you don’t forget who is doing what, where and when! Be assured, my trusty kitchen calendar is as busy as ever! CHRISTMAS IS COMING! I know, I know. We’ve only just finished summer and I guess the next think on the agenda is Halloween, but the way the year’s going, Christmas will be here before you know it, so it’s time to get your plans into action. I am absolutely not the best person to say this, and I usually have great intentions of being super prepared by the end of November, but in reality that never happens. Wouldn’t it be great if it did though?!! Maybe I’ll surprise myself this year! I’ll let you know how it goes! Fiona x Twitter: @fionadwyer • Facebook: Fiona Dwyer PR
