Local News Councillor Linda Bayram has been elected as the new chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council following the authority’s annual general meeting. Councillor Bayram, who has been vice chairman for the last year, has served for nine years as a Conservative councillor representing the Howdenshire ward on East Riding of Yorkshire Council. A resident of North Cave, Councillor Bayram sits on the council’s children and young people overview and scrutiny sub-committee, the health, care and wellbeing overview and scrutiny sub-committee, and the Licensing Act 2003 committee. Before being elected to East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Bayram served on North Cave Parish Council for a number of years, becoming its chairman for three years. Councillor Bayram was born in Oxfordshire but moved to the East Riding at the age of 19, when her RAF-serving father was stationed at the base at Leconfield. She worked as a clerk in Barclays Bank in Hull, as a clerk for Thompson’s garage in Hull, before opening her own dress shop in Kirk Ella. After meeting her soon-to-be- husband Charlie, Councillor Bayram moved to the family farm in North Cave, where she still lives. As well as helping to run the farm, she juggled selling pet food from the site with becoming a busy mother to three children. She now has four grandchildren. Looking ahead to her year in office, Councillor Bayram said: “I feel very proud. It’s a big honour to elected chairman. “While I’ve been serving as the vice chairman, I’ve had the opportunity to visit many events and everyone I met has been so friendly and welcoming, so I’m looking forward to the next year. “I want to be a great ambassador for the East Riding and its people.” Her consort will be her husband and former East Riding councillor Charlie Bayram. Councillor Bayram has chosen to support horticultural charity Mires Beck Nursery in North Cave during her year as chairman for its work and support with children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs. Councillor Linda Bayram elected as new chairman of East Riding Council East Riding Council joins the ‘Check. Think. Report.’ campaign to guide parents during child disappearances East Riding of Yorkshire Council is supporting the ‘Check. Think. Report.’ campaign, as it launched across Europe on International Missing Children’s Day (Tuesday 21 May). The campaign is launching in 16 countries and 14 languages by AMBER Alert Europe, The European Centre for Missing Children. It is aimed at parents and caregivers, provides them with a comprehensive step-by-step guide on what to do and what to expect if their child goes missing. The core advice is to “Check” to verify the child’s absence, “Think” to recall crucial details and assess the situation, and “Report” to notify the authorities promptly. Councillor Victoria Aitken, cabinet member for children, families and education said: “The number of children who go missing in the East Riding is low by comparison to other areas, however any child going missing is one too many. In such distressing moments knowing what steps to take can make all the difference. “Providing our parents and carers with the Check. Think. Report. advice can only help them to act swiftly and effectively in the event if a child’s disappearance.” AMBER Alert Europe has collaborated with experts in the field of missing persons to develop the campaign. Looking after plants can seem really scary if you’re new to it, or have had a bad experience in the past. But then again, there are few things more satisfying than tending and nurturing a plant and seeing it flourish and grow. And we’re about to make that process far less work for you, thanks to Michelle at Bell Mills Garden Centre in Driffield. ‘Four of the most common questions I am asked are about unkillable plants, ones that will survive without much daylight, what can go in a bathroom, and which plants are best for air purification,’ he reveals. Here’s Michelle’s quick guide to the best house plants to solve those leafy conundrums. Best house plant that’s unkillable ‘We’ve all been there,’ says Michelle. ‘You’ve picked up a beautiful plant from the market, brimming with luscious leaves. But a week later, after over/underwatering or sticking it by a radiator… it dies. You overlooked by the urban gardener, but it’s actually the perfect spot for a bit of greenery. Humidity-loving plants like Ferns feel right in at home in the steamy environment and they don’t mind a bit of shade either as it reminds them of their natural jungle habitat. And with space at a premium, find a high shelf for your plants to perch or, better still, let them trail and, voilà, your very own jungle oasis! Our top pick would be the Boston fern (pictured below). vow never to buy another, but your lust for botany makes you crave something else that comes without the maintenance.’ ‘Well, look no further than a hardy Sanservieria (pictured top right) snake plant, a houseplant that genuinely appreciates a missed watering or two. She truly is the ultimate beginner’s choice, tolerating shadier spots and perfect for the bedroom too. Best house plant for low light ‘All plants eventually need some natural light to survive, but unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with sun-soaked spaces,’ says Michelle. ‘This doesn’t always mean that you can’t bring some plants into your space, though.’ ‘If you’re desperate to green up a shady spot there are a few options for you,’ advises Michelle. ‘One of our favourite choices is our Zamioculas (pictured above). She’s also known as the Eternity Plant thanks to her ability to survive in tough conditions, meaning she’ll happily put up with very little sunshine.’ Best house plant for clean air Plants not only look great; some can even purify the air we breathe. Toxins produced by cleaning products and furnishings in our homes are a major cause of indoor air pollution; not ideal when city dwellers spend most of our time indoors. Introducing a flowing delicacy like the a Devil’s Ivy, commonly known as a Golden Pothos (pictured bottom left), can transform the air quality of your home as well as green up your space with her trailing tresses. House & Home Continued page 10 Kermit was right! We all have a rainbow connection. You may claim you have a favourite shade, but the reasoning behind why you are attracted to it often runs much deeper. We choose based on how we feel and, as a result, the colours we paint our lives with become a form of expression. For Beverley painter and decorator Lee Johnson articulating who he is through his style is based on his colour choices. In his interaction with clients he regularly discusses and provides visual lessons and inspiration for creating the perfect balance in their homes along with his insights about the seven major colour groups by which he defines people. Here are Lee’s tips on making the most of your personal palette: Combine patterns and solids. Incorporating patterns, especially in wallpaper, is an easy way to introduce colour into a room since they typically contain multiple hues. Combine them with solids to utilise your colour scheme effectively. Find solids in the same colour as your patterns, but only use them if they are different shades to complement the design. Using the same shade will make your space look stale. Create interesting contrast. Black and white are a timeless twosome, but don’t shy away from a change of pace. Create contrast by pairing an unlikely duo, like a bright blue and soft pink. The dissimilarity in the vibrancies of the two will spark intrigue. A neutral backdrop with bold pops of colour will have the same effect. Monochromatic is key. Saturate your home with varying shades of one colour. It will automatically tie the look of the room together while providing contrast. Many colours, like purple, are versatile, so pairing different tints alongside one another will cast a dreamy yet powerful impact. The fading look of a gradient is another method of employing a single family of colour. Break the rules. Disregard any ideas that restrict you from personal design urges. The look of your home is an extension of you. Cover your window panes in that neon tint you’ve been lusting over. Ladies, paint your skirtings in the same colour your nails are currently sporting. House & Home Add texture. A ton of solid colours can look rather lacklustre. Textures possess the ability to add richness and depth. Colours look different on assorted surfaces, so make sure to indulge on a velvety throw or shag rug. Plus, it’ll make your décor look more appealing. Accessorise. The secret to adding colour to a home? Do it through accessories. Inject colour with decorative cushions and rugs. Don’t be afraid to get unconventional - invest in something bold, such as a lime- green chair. The stronger the hue, the more it will energise a room. However, if you’re feeling a little delicate, create a tranquil oasis with muted shades and earthy tones. Nature itself will always provide the best natural colour palette, so head to your local nursery and bring home a new plant friend (or two). COLOUR DECODED Exploring the meaning and history behind the seven major colour groups could help you choose your new colour scheme. BLACK Timeless and classic, while this colour is a nod to nostalgia when coupled with white, it can also boost sleekness in décor and transform grainy wistfulness into clean, modern lines. BLUE The colour favoured by most, boasts nobility and richness. From lapis lazuli, the sacred stone of ancient Egyptian gods, to the perfect blue wash of your favourite worn jeans, the time-honoured hue is here to stay. AQUA With a colour as versatile as it gets, it’s no wonder shades of aqua can find peace among cool and warm colours alike. Barely there or bold, ancient civilizations used it to symbolize heaven on earth and to encrust prized possessions. GREEN Reoccurring in the natural world, this colour symbolises earth and growth. Due to its reassuring qualities, Goethe affirmed green as peaceful and, thus, perfect for bedrooms. But don’t overlook its vivacity - this hue will glam up any space. PINK When we think of pink, we can’t help but get romantic. However, there’s more than sensuality lurking behind the hue. Always be aware of its authoritative nature, Argentina’s Casa Rosada, a building painted pink, is where the president resides. PURPLE Shrouded in mysticism, purple represents wealth, wisdom and spirituality. It was the first colour derived from a chemical process in 1856 and has retained its magical quality since. WHITE Despite its colourless nature, white carries a colourful multitude of meanings; it symbolises purity, lucidity and beginnings. As a result, the shade is donned at weddings and funerals where new chapters are unfolding. Choose white for simplicity. House & Home Chris Lee’s journey in the carpet fitting industry began over four decades ago when he started his career at P&D Carpets, a local firm, back in 1984. Since then, he has become a familiar face in the community, known for his dedication to providing top-notch service and quality products to his customers. Today, Chris operates his own business, offering a unique and convenient mobile showroom service that brings the best in carpeting right to his customers’ doorsteps. After a period of owning his own shop on Chanterlands Avenue in Hull, Chris realised that his passion truly lay in meeting his customers where they were most comfortable – in their homes. It became evident that what his customers valued most was the personalised attention and expert advice he provided during these in-home consultations. Thus, Chris’s mobile showroom service was born. When a customer contacts Chris, he promptly arranges a convenient time to visit their home with his extensive range of carpet samples. This allows customers to see how different options will look in their space and make an informed decision based on their preferences and needs. During the consultation, Chris provides valuable advice on choosing the right carpet for their specific requirements, taking into account factors such as durability, style, and budget. One of the advantages of Chris’s mobile showroom service is the ability to provide instant quotes on- site. By accurately measuring the area and discussing the customer’s preferences, Chris can provide a transparent and competitive price without any hidden fees or surprises. Once the customer is satisfied with their selection and quote, Chris handles the ordering process, ensuring a swift turnaround time for delivery. In most cases, carpets are ready for installation the very next day, allowing customers to enjoy their new flooring without delay. Chris understands that every home is different, and he goes above and beyond to accommodate his customers’ needs. Whether it’s moving furniture to prepare for installation or arranging disposal of the existing carpet, Chris takes care of every detail to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience for his customers. Bringing Quality Carpets Direct to Your Doorstep The Leasehold and Freehold Reform Bill passed into law in May - one of the last pieces of legislation to make it through the House of Lords before Parliament is prorogued ahead of the general election. But many of the hoped-for changes to alleviate the financial strain on leaseholders did not make it into law. “This limited Bill is a muted win for leaseholders,” said Linz Darlington, MD of leasehold extension specialists, Homehold. “While the legislation is not without merit, leaseholders must see it as a step in a journey rather than the destination itself.” Secretary of State for Housing Michael Gove had initially set out to scrap the leasehold system - where homeowners pay ground rent on the land their homes are built on to the freeholders - entirely. Earlier this evening, Gove announced that he would stand down as a Member of Parliament ahead of the election. Many London homeowners are trapped by ground rents that double every ten years and service charges that have become completely unaffordable. One in ten London leaseholders are considering selling up over the costs of owning a leasehold home – but are afraid that the conditions of their contracts could make it difficult to find a buyer. “The bill does not contain many of the important provisions that were promised by the Government. The commitment to remove ground rent for existing leaseholders, or even cap it at £250, has not been included,” said Darlington. “Another notable omission from the bill is the prevention of forfeiture, a draconian measure that allows a freeholder to repossess a flat for a debt of just £350,” he added. “There is no justification for ground rents. It is a cost to leaseholders for no service provided as a consequence,” said Baroness Pinnock (Liberal Democrat), who noted that Gove had promised to reduce ground rents to a peppercorn rate. “A significant number of landlords have their leaseholders by the short and curlies, to coin a term that was sent to me by a suffering leaseholder,” said Lord Bailey of Paddington (Conservative). Existing leaseholders will find no relief from ground rent under the new legislation. However, when extending their lease they will be able to cap their ground rent at 0.1 per cent of the value of the freehold. The Residential Freehold Association, which represents the owners of freeholds, had stronger words of recrimination for the Bill. “The Leasehold and Freehold Reform Bill is a defective and poorly evidenced piece of legislation which has ignored the outcomes of consultation with industry and leaseholders alike,” a spokesperson said. “The Government has pushed this Bill through without proper scrutiny and as a result there is work to be done to ensure there are no unintended consequences that will negatively impact leaseholders.” Representing freeholders, Lord Moylan (Conservative) said the cap was: “simply another unwarranted interference with property rights, with almost no understanding or explanation on the part of the Government of what the practical effects will be on the interests of legitimate freeholders, which include pension funds, charities and other parties.” Leasehold Reform Bill passes - but no ground rent cap for existing leaseholders Neither leaseholders nor freeholders are en- tirely happy with the last-minute legislation June 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

Health, Beauty & Wellbeing Rebekah’s Beauty Box Ten Steps To Get Your Legs Summer-Ready Summer might still feel a way off, but you’ll reap the benefits if you put a bit of work into your beauty regime now. From the importance of a good body brush to the professional treatments and at-home tricks worth trying, here three experts share their advice on how to get your legs ready for summer… Be Abrasive “I believe in good abrasion – by which I mean regular exfoliation and body brushing to improve the surface of your skin. Doing both daily will make your legs feel smoother, unclog blocked pores, and get rid of ingrown hairs so skin has a healthy glow. The latter occurs by bringing fresh, nutrient-rich blood to the surface – especially when you use a dry brush. The technique stimulates your lymph, which encourages waste to move out of your system, giving limbs a brighter, more invigorated appearance. Make sure you’re brushing either before, during or after a shower, and over your entire body – not just your legs.” Get Your Technique Right “If you’re going to start body brushing, make sure you do it right. Most experts recommend buffing with large sweeping strokes up towards your heart – so feet or hands up. Doing it this way works with the body’s lymph flow, encouraging drainage – just make sure you focus on the right spots for this, so behind your knees and under your arms. Other lymph drainage experts advise buffing in small, circular patterns, taking a soft approach, starting near the upper part of your body (around your collarbone). Whichever technique you choose, you’ll see results.” Invest In Good Ingredients “It’s all very good scrubbing and exfoliating, but if you want proper results, you should also be investing in products that contain good ingredients. Try to use scrubs that have actual grains or salt inside, or give smoothing acids a go, like AHAs (lactic acid) or retinol. These ingredients will improve the skin’s surface on your legs quite quickly, while making them softer to the touch, too. This, combined with daily scrubbing, will have a big impact on the appearance of your body. You’ll find the right ingredients will get rid of keratosis pilaris, too – aka red, chicken bumps. Also, apply your products when the skin is warm (post- shower or a bath) and circulation is up, so that the ingredients can penetrate deeper with ease.” Play With Exfoliants “It doesn’t matter if you use a cream or chemical exfoliant, but try to find one that incorporates the ingredients mentioned above. They are a brilliant way of removing the upper, dead layers of skin cells, and giving your legs that fresh pinkness. Plus, the right formulas will prime skin for a moisturising cream or oil, which delivers additional smoothness and suppleness over time. Likewise, buffing or brushing beforehand allows for speedier absorption of anything that follows, so you’ll find less of your product just sits on the skin’s surface.” Don’t Pay A Fortune “If you don’t have budget to invest in exfoliants, then do a simple kitchen raid. Oat flakes, table salt, milk and a squeezed lemon make a great combination. Use this on the skin to gently buff and release red, angry bumps of inflammation. If all else fails, don’t forget the power of scrubbing with a hot soapy flannel or sponge – this will help create smoothness, especially when done over the course of a few weeks.” Pay Attention To Your Shins “Many of us often get dry, flaky skin on our shins, which is usually a result of dehydration. Swift strokes with a body brush will get rid of the issue in seconds – especially if you brush daily. My advice here though is to take a lighter approach. The skin on your shins is very thin and fragile – something like 0.5mm thick, as opposed to 2.5mm on your upper arms and thighs. It can be easily damaged, so use deft, gentle strokes and never go too heavy.” Stay Active “All the above steps are great, but it’s important you keep active for healthy-looking legs. Try and do your daily 10k steps – this is a good target to keep the lymph flowing freely and to prevent water retention from building up. Too much retention compromises leg shape and can cause cellulite. It’s key to drink plenty of water to help flush your kidneys out, too, in turn removing congestive waste. If you’re prone to puffy legs, take a tablespoon of oat bran daily with natural yoghurt to keep acidic bloating and trapped fluid to the bare minimum – trust me, it works.” QUICK-FIXES… A Make-up artist friend shared these tips for smoother- looking legs and I have found them invaluable… Rely On Body Make-Up “We all have uneven tone and skincare issues on our limbs, but if it’s affecting your self-esteem or you want some handy quick-fixes, body make-up can be useful. Often easier to blend than fake-tan, it lends great coverage and it’s easy to remove. Powder is the easiest formula – especially one with shimmer that reflects the light – however, they don’t always last that long. Use liquid formulas as they dry fast and can replicate the glow-giving benefits of fake tan. Use a mitt to apply it, taking long strokes for even distribution – you don’t want to go over the same area more than once. If you want more depth, do another layer, but always finish everything first before doing another.” Work Quickly “To prevent streaks, work quickly, focusing on the part of the body you want to even up. Try to work systemically – if you’re doing the arms, make sure you connect to your shoulders and surrounding areas, too – it’s important to do this while the product is wet so you can blend for a smooth finish. When working on your legs, take your time to even up product – never rush or you’ll end up with harsh unblended edges.” Use Brushes Or Your Hands “It doesn’t matter which, but it does depend where. If you’re focusing on legs, try using your hands with long, firm strokes, really working the make-up into your skin like you would a body cream. For knees, try taking on a patting motion as often colour can go darker here as it’s an area that needs more coverage. If you want to even everything up, invest in a big, fluffy kabuki brush with dense bristles – this will help disperse body make-up evenly and finely over your legs.” June 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

Literature she takes forward in the city, she finds herself confronted by an antagonism she does not yet know how to counter. In this thrilling and often frightening place, each decision can have the highest of stakes, yet she knows that only she can forge a path forward to the life she wants to live. This story of self-realisation illuminates the ties between gender and class, the search for identity, and the power of chosen family. Rebel Girl: My Life As A Feminist Punk By Kathleen Hanna Kathleen Hanna and her Riot Grrrl band Bikini Kill’s rallying cry to feminists echoed through the punk scene of the 1980s, 90s and beyond. In Rebel Girl, Hanna’s new memoir, she takes us from her tumultuous childhood home to her formative college years in Olympia, Washington, and on to her first years on tour, fighting hard for gigs and for her band. As Hanna makes clear, being in a ‘girl band’, especially a punk girl band, in those years was not a simple or a safe prospect. Male violence and antagonism threatened at every turn, and surviving as a singer who was a lightning rod for controversy took limitless amounts of determination. But the relationships she developed during those years buoyed her – including with her bandmates Tobi Vail, Kathi Wilcox and Billy Karren; her friendship with Kurt Cobain; and her introduction to Joan Jett – and they were a testament to how the true punk world nurtured and cared for its own. Enlightenment By Sarah Perry Thomas Hart and Grace Macauley are worshippers at the Bethesda Baptist chapel in the small Essex town of Aldleigh. Though separated in age by three decades, the pair are kindred spirits – torn between their commitment to religion and their desire for more. But their friendship is threatened by the arrival of love. Thomas falls for James Bower, who runs the local museum. Meanwhile, Grace meets Nathan, a fellow sixth former who The Gentleman From Peru By André Aciman A new novel about a group of college friends marooned at a luxurious hotel on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. While their boat is being repaired, they can’t help but observe the daily routine of a fellow hotel guest – a mysterious, white-bearded stranger who sits on the veranda each night and smokes one cigarette, sometimes two. When the group decides to invite the elegant traveller to lunch with them, they cannot begin to imagine the miraculous abilities, strange wisdom and life-changing story he is about to impart to one of the friends in particular… Caledonian Road By Andrew O’Hagan It’s May 2021, London. Campbell Flynn – an art historian and celebrity intellectual – is entering middle age. Fuelled by an appetite for admiration, controversy and novelty, he doesn’t take people half as seriously as they take themselves. Then there’s Milo Mangasha, his provocative student. Milo inhabits a more precarious world, and has experiences and ideas that excite his teacher. Over the course of an incendiary year, a web of crimes, secrets and scandals is revealed, and Flynn may not be able to protect himself from the shattering exposure of all his privilege really involves. Bad Habit By Alana S. Portero A Spanish hit that’s been translated into English, Bad Habit takes us deep into the lives of the residents of a Madrid neighbourhood named after a holy saint. An unnamed young trans woman grows up in a working-class suburb that has no place for her. She discovers community and kinship in downtown Madrid, amid a dazzling party scene animated by charming junkies, glamorous pop divas and fallen angels. With each step represents a different, wilder kind of life. They are drawn passionately together, but quickly pulled apart, casting Grace into the wider world and far away from Thomas. In time, the mysteries of Aldleigh are revealed, bringing Thomas and Grace back to each other, and to a richer understanding of love and life. Clear By Carys Davies On the remote Scottish island of Ivar in 1843, the sole occupant leads a life of quiet isolation until the day he finds a man unconscious on the beach below the cliffs. The newcomer is John Ferguson, an impoverished church minister sent to evict Ivar and turn the island into grazing land for sheep. Unaware of the stranger’s intentions, Ivar takes him into his home, and despite the two men having no common language, a fragile bond begins to form between them. Meanwhile on the mainland, John’s wife Mary anxiously awaits news of his mission. Against the rugged backdrop of this faraway island, Carys Davies’s intimate drama unfolds with tension and tenderness. Table For Two By Amor Towles Six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate in modern marriages. In Rules of Civility, the indomitable Evelyn Ross leaves NYC in September 1938 with the intention of returning home to Indiana. But as her train pulls into Chicago, where her parents are waiting, she instead extends her ticket to Los Angeles. Told from seven points of view, Eve in Hollywood describes how Eve crafts a new future for herself – and others – in a noirish tale that takes us through the movie sets, bungalows and dive bars of LA. Blue Sisters By Coco Mellors The Blue sisters have always been exceptional – and exceptionally different. Avery, a strait-laced lawyer living in London, is the typical eldest daughter, though she’s hiding a secret that could undo her perfect life forever. Bonnie was a boxer but, following a devastating defeat, she’s been working as a bouncer in LA – until a reckless act one night threatens to drive her out of the city. And Lucky, the rebellious youngest, is a model in Paris whose hard-partying ways are finally catching up with her. Then there was Nicky, the beloved fourth sister, whose unexpected death left the three remaining sisters reeling. When, a year later, the trio reunite in New York to stop the sale of their childhood home, they find that it’s only by returning to each other that they can navigate their heartbreak and learn to fall in love with life again. The Chain By Chimene Suleyman In January 2017, Chimene Suleyman was on her way to an abortion clinic in Queens, New York, with her boyfriend, the father of her nascent child. It was the last day they would spend together. In an extraordinary sequence of events, Chimene was to discover the truth of her boyfriend’s life: that she and many other women had been subtly, patiently and painfully betrayed. In this spellbinding memoir, she exposes one man’s control over many women and the trauma he left behind, and celebrates the sisterhood that formed in his wake despite – and in spite of – him. Exploring how women are duped every day by individuals, she interrogates how society continually allows this to happen. She demonstrates that, no matter how intelligent, educated or self-aware they might be, over time a woman can be played into performing the age-old role of giver and nurturer. A devastating personal testimony and a searing indictment of persistent misogyny. Nine books to read this June June 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

YOUR POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER JONATHAN EVISON I am delighted to have been re- elected as your Police and Crime Commissioner. Over the past 3 years, we have been working hard to increase feelings of safety and improve public confidence in policing, but the work can not stop there. My priorities going into the next 4 years will be to ensure there is more visible policing and more initiatives to tackle drugs and anti- social behaviour. We are continuing to develop fair policing to help tackle rural, coastal and urban crime. We will be introducing more new technology to help make our roads safer and reduce causalities. We will continue to maintain strong support for victims of crime and increase the work to end violence against women and girls. My Community Alert is a free messaging system where I regularly share work that we are doing. It is also where you can find out more about local policing activity in your area, the latest initiatives and how you can get involved. The National Crime Survey results were recently published and for ‘Confidence in local police’, Humberside Police is in the top 3 forces as of December 2023, which is 28 places better than where the force ranked a few years ago and better than the England and Wales average. In the next few months, I will be sharing the next Police and Crime Plan survey with you. This is your chance to help shape policing and community safety in your area for the next 4 years. Please keep an eye out on our social media channels for you chance to participate. HumbersidePCC HumbersidePCC opcchumberside www.humberside-pcc.gov.uk POLICE AND CRIME PLAN NATIONAL CRIME SURVEY

19 HumbersidePCC HumbersidePCC opcchumberside My office has received £65,000 from the Department for Transport (DfT) for a pioneering road safety project called Operation Journey. We have purchased 350 dash cams for use by regular road network users who are willing to help us make the roads safer through uploading and identifying bad driver behaviour. Anyone with a dash cam can upload footage by visiting Humberside Police’s website and clicking on Dash Cam Reporting. If you would like to have the opportunity to apply for a dash cam, please sign up to My Community Alert where we will be announcing future rounds. I am also trailing new technology in the East Riding to look at how we can enable local villages to improve roads safety conditions. I will update you on the progress of this in future editions. Operation Shield, has recently relaunched to continue the focus on clamping down on crime in hotspot locations, identifying and targeting the most harmful criminals who prey on our communities. The most recent operation saw arrest numbers reach 1250 with 500 criminals charged or jailed. This operation, as well as many others, relies on intelligence our communities regularly submit, so it is important to always report crimes, incidents and information. This can be done via the Humberside Police online portal, by calling the non-emergency number 101, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. ROAD SAFETY COMMUNITY SAFETY FUND OPERATION SHIELD In my last term of office, though my Community Safety Fund, £1.5m was committed to 86 local community organisations, with £860,000 of match funding. This investment saw nearly 4500 participants supported in a range of different projects, allowed 104 CCTV cameras to be installed and over 800m of security fencing to be constructed. As we go into the next 4 years, I will be announcing further rounds so I can continue to help make our communities safer.

Food & Drink Erkan Sahindal - business owner at the Olive Tree on Lincoln Way, Beverley ays his cupcakes are beautifully moist and flavourful thanks to the grated carrots and an abundance of spices. Meanwhile, chopped walnuts lend some added crunch and the cream- cheese frosting tastes like a cloud of fluffy, sweet goodness. A fun alternative to making a single carrot cake, these are the perfect addition to any at-home afternoon tea. Ingredients: FOR THE CUPCAKES: 160g of gluten-free flour blend 160g of light brown soft sugar 1 tsp of baking powder ½ tsp of bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp of xanthan gum 1 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground ginger ¼ tsp ground mixed spice ¼ tsp salt 130g of sunflower or other neutral- tasting oil 60g of full-fat plain or Greek yoghurt, at room temperature 2 eggs, at room temperature 200g of carrots, coarsely grated 60g of walnuts, chopped, plus extra to decorate FOR THE FROSTING: 300g of double cream, chilled 150g of icing sugar, sifted 300g of full-fat cream cheese, chilled 1 tsp of vanilla bean paste ¼ tsp of salt Erkans’ Carrot Cake Cupcakes (Makes 12) Method: Step 1 Adjust the oven shelf to the middle position, preheat the oven to 160°C and line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake liners. Step 2 Sift together the gluten-free flour blend, sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, xanthan gum, spices and salt. Step 3 In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, yoghurt and eggs. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and whisk until you get a smooth, thick batter with no flour clumps. Step 4 Fold in the grated carrots and chopped walnuts until evenly distributed. Step 5 Divide the batter equally between the 12 cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full. Step 6 Bake for about 25 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs attached. Step 7 Remove the cupcakes from the tin and transfer to a wire rack to cool. Step 8 Now, make the frosting. Using a stand mixer with the whisk attachment or a hand mixer fitted with the double beaters, whip the double cream and icing sugar until the mixture holds stiff peaks. Step 9 In a separate bowl, whip the cream cheese until smooth. Add it to the whipped cream and whip for about 1 minute until the mixture holds stiff peaks. Add the vanilla paste and salt, and mix until incorporated. Step 10 Transfer the frosting to a piping bag (use your choice of piping nozzle) and pipe on top of each cupcake, then sprinkle with the chopped walnuts to finish. Step 11 They will last 3 to 4 days stored in a container in a cool, dry place. Food & Drink SUNDAY AFTERNOON MUSIC ● Historic Public House Local Cask Ales Lagers Beers Wines Spirits Tea Coffee Hot Chocolate Large Outdoor Seating Area Tuesday QUIZ Wednesday FOLK Sunday Afternoon Music Everyday Drinks & Chatter ● ● ● ● ● ● WELCOME TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS Warm roasted pepper and lentil salad with olives and halloumi Serves 2 Halloumi is a very useful cheese to have in your fridge. It gives vegetarian dishes a salty hit and its firm texture means it stands up to frying or grilling, which brings out the flavour. If you’d prefer to make the dish vegan, it can stand up without the halloumi. As well as adding peppery flavour to salads, watercress wilts into soups, stews and warm salads too, giving extra nutrients. Ingredients 4 red peppers 2 tbsp sunflower or light olive oil 1 small red onion, finely diced 2 carrots, finely diced 2 celery sticks, finely diced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped, grated or crushed 100g Puy-style lentils, rinsed in a sieve under cold water 1 bay leaf ¼ tsp dried oregano ¼ tsp ground cumin ¼ tsp dried mint 1 tbsp red wine vinegar 100g pitted black olives 1 pack (150–200g) halloumi, cut into 1cm/2cm thick slices small glug of extra virgin olive oil 50g watercress small handful of chopped fresh mint and/or parsley, to garnish salt and pepper Method Char and peel the peppers as described on page 158. While they’re cooking, heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion, carrot and celery and fry on a low heat for 15 minutes, stirring now and then. If they look as if they might catch at any point, add a splash of water. Once softened, add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Add the lentils, bay leaf, oregano, cumin, mint and 300ml water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20–25 minutes, until the lentils are tender. Keep an eye on the liquid towards the end and top up with a little extra water as needed. Almost all the liquid should have been absorbed by the end of cooking. Once done, remove from the heat if the peppers aren’t quite ready. Roughly chop the peppers into strips and stir them into the lentils with the vinegar and olives. Remove the bay leaf and season to taste. Set aside while you fry the halloumi. Heat a dry non-stick frying pan, add the halloumi slices and fry for about 2 minutes on each side, until golden. Gently warm the lentils if needed, then stir in the watercress and extra virgin olive oil and serve with the halloumi slices on top, scattered with the fresh herbs. Variation Instead of halloumi, crumble over some feta or goat’s cheese. June 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

The Finance Column with James Cunningham Compound growth, described as the “eighth wonder of the world” by renowned physicist Albert Einstein, is a phenomenon wherein earnings from an investment generate additional earnings, which then compound over time. In simpler terms, it’s the process of earning interest on both the initial principal and the accumulated interest, leading to accelerated growth over the long term. The beauty of compound growth lies in its ability to amplify even modest contributions into substantial sums over the passage of time. By starting early and consistently investing in pension savings, individuals can leverage the power of compounding to build a robust financial foundation for retirement. Every pound invested has the potential to snowball into a much larger sum over the years. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), in its ongoing efforts to promote financial well-being and awareness, has shed light on the concerning trend of individuals failing to invest in pensions in the UK. According to the FCA, a significant proportion of the population remains disengaged or hesitant when it comes to pension planning and investment, overlooking the long-term benefits of compound growth. This reluctance to invest in pensions can be attributed to various factors, including a lack of understanding about the importance of retirement planning, misconceptions about the complexity of pension schemes, and competing financial priorities. However, by reframing the narrative around pensions and emphasising the power of compound growth, individuals can be encouraged to take proactive steps towards securing their financial futures. One of the key advantages of pension savings lies in their tax- efficient nature. Contributions often benefit from tax relief and investment growth is tax-free within the pension wrapper. This tax advantage, coupled with the potential for compound growth, makes pensions an attractive vehicle for long-term wealth accumulation and retirement planning. Moreover, the earlier individuals start investing in pensions, the greater the potential for compound growth to work its magic. By making regular contributions and staying invested for the long haul, individuals can harness the full power of compounding and significantly boost their retirement savings over time. With proper planning, disciplined investing, and a long-term perspective, individuals can pave the way to a financially secure and comfortable retirement. To receive a complimentary guide covering wealth management and retirement planning contact james.cunningham@sjpp.co.uk or call 07572 960 986. The Magic of Compound Growth In the realm of personal finance, few concepts wield as much transformative power as compound growth. This magical phenomenon has the potential to exponentially multiply wealth over time, making it a cornerstone of successful retirement planning and investment strategies. As individuals strive to secure their financial futures, understanding and harnessing the power of compound growth for pension savings and investments is paramount. It seems everyone is looking to have a great adventure & make wonderful travel memories near or far. On a personal note, I have been crossing off destinations on my bucket list, for example having done John O’Groats, I needed to see Lands End … done. Also having attended many RHS shows, I managed to tick off Malvern this year and how splendid it was. To avoid the crowds another thing I am trying to do more often is travel out of season, thus the sights around our globe are quieter and I can enjoy a more relaxed, enjoyable experience. Our hot destination at present is the USA & Canada, and travellers are looking not only to explore new areas, but enjoy events occurring at the same time. In July, Canada Day is the 1st & US Independence day is the 4th and we are being asked to incor- porate these dates into holidays! Clients want to visit for the cities & towns coming together as communities with music festivals, parades and boat parties on the rivers and of course, if you have family & friends who are residents, this is a great opportunity to celebrate with them and a good excuse to make a visit! Another wonderful annual event in July, is Canada’s Calgary Stampede, offering something for everyone. I enjoy watching the cowboys compet- ing, however my favourite is the Chuck wagon racing. Everyone gets in the spirit and dress for the part in checked shirt, jeans (with Belt) and a Stetson!! Visitors to the event with gold tickets are handed a Stetson on arrival. There are beer tents & live music day and night plus a huge area selling all sorts of merchandise from clothing to agricul- tural equipment. Each evening in the Grand Arena, they create the “Greatest Show on Earth”, which includes breathtaking acts, music and fireworks all of which has to be seen to be believed. October is the time to visit Churchill to see the Polar Bears. Using purpose built tundra buggies capable of moving over the rough terrain and keeping you warm and safe, you get up close to the bears. There is very little accommodation in Churchill and visitor numbers are limited, with no roads access is via the railroad and a train comes in once a week bringing supplies for the locals. Passengers can travel by train on a scenic 2 day journey from Winnipeg or fly, with charter flights for tourists being available during the bear season. This amazing experience is by no means cheap, but seeing these beautiful wild animals in there habitat is worth every penny. Canada is very much a year round destination offering so many outdoor pursuits including fabulous skiing opportunities in the winter season and being a vast country with lots of wilderness, you can enjoy with out the crowds. The US hot spots are the cities! Milestone birthdays & anniversaries Las Vegas & New York are the most popular followed by Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago , Washington and New Orleans. Short breaks are popular and for the out of season traveller can be a bargain. If you are going to see the sights you will have fewer queues offering you a much more enriching experience. New York is extremely popular to visit for Thanksgiving in November or a New Year Celebration. The city is very exciting year round, to keep the price down avoid the peak times. I love to visit New York in April & October when the weather is at its best for lots of sightseeing as it is not too hot. I always think of New York like London, you need to visit more than once for short bursts and it is a great add on pre or post an escorted tour or cruise, I personally like to visit last, then I can shop before returning home and not have to carry my acquired items during my holiday! A must for Music lovers, at least once in a life time, is a visit to New Orleans where Carnival Season runs from January to March. Although the weather may be a little chilly at Carnival time it is an amazing experience to combine with a Caribbean cruise for a sunshine perhaps?. However, as the streets are alive with music all year you can visit anytime and you will be spoilt for choice! The ultimate family holiday has to be a visit to Florida, I remember my son as a toddler could not believe he was seeing Donald Duck & Mickey Mouse for real ! Such super memories. Taking time out and Travelling is a fabulous tonic.. Where ever in the world you are looking to travel, we look forward to help you make wonderful memories be it a UK break or a worldwide adventure. Travel is good for the mind & soul and the memories made will be treasured for a life time. We look forward to hearing from you best wishes

Here To Help Find The Culprit Hay fever symptoms differ depend- ing on the time of year and the pol- lens you’re allergic to. The hay fever season starts as early as January and carries on until September. Tree pollen is present between January and September, but peaks between late March and June. Grass pollen, meanwhile, increases between May and September, but is most likely to affect us in June and July, while weed pollen, which appears between the months of April and September, peaks between May and August. Plus hay fever is the most common allergic condition, affecting 13 million people in the UK. Though hay fever can occur at any age, it tends to affect around one in four adults, meaning British residents are more likely to suffer from hay fever than almost any other condition. Check The Forecast The experts recommend getting savvy about pollen counts, so you can avoid going out when they’re at their peak. Pollen counts tend to be at their highest level in the early morning (5am-10am) and at dusk, so consider limiting time outside during these periods. While grassy areas tend to have higher pollen levels in built-up regions, hay fever can be worsened by pollution. Rain can also be bad news for hay fever sufferers – grass loves a good dousing, so tends to produce more pollen in dry weather that follows wet. Keep an eye on the Met Office’s pollen count and try to stay indoors if the count is medium or high. Try A Supplement Many people resort to conventional treatments, such as anti-histamine tablets, but these aren’t without side-effects. Fortunately, there are some fantastic supplements that can help you cope with fay fever. Supplements work to regulate his- tamine levels in the body, improve respiratory function and ensure the immune system doesn’t overreact to allergens such as pollen, thus reducing the misery of hay fever symptoms. If you’re keen to try a supplement, remember timing is key. Look At Your Lifestyle Studies suggest alcohol may worsen hay fever as it appears to increase the propensity for the im- mune system to produce antibod- ies involved in allergic responses, so cut out or reduce your intake if you are suffering. A recent study showed women who drank two or more glasses of wine per day were at double the risk of having hay fever symptoms. And when you’re at home, it could be worth hanging your laundry inside, as clothing can easily trap pollen, which can then come into contact with your skin. Also consider keeping your windows closed particularly during mid-morning and early evening, when pollen levels peak. Don’t Rely On Local Honey It’s long been believed that eating locally produced honey prevents hay fever, but it’s a myth. A recent study compared locally produced honey with nationally produced, honey. In double-blind trials, there was no difference between them in reducing hay fever symptoms. It’s believed the pollen in honey is nearly all the heavy, flower pollen that doesn’t cause hay fever, while the pollen that’s responsible for the traditional hay fever symptoms comes from grasses and trees that bees don’t visit. Use Disposable Contact Lenses If you use contact lenses, consider switching to daily disposable lens- es. Disposable lenses can provide a protective barrier to pollen, but reusable lenses are likely to make symptoms worse over time as they harbour pollen, which then affects your eyes. Build A Barrier Prevent pollen from entering your body by using a nasal balm. They are applied to the edges of the nostrils to trap pollen. Choose one that is organic and drug-free and is made from beeswax and sun- flower oil, which forms a barrier that doesn’t dry out the nose. Try Acupuncture Acupuncture encourages a natural healing response. Studies suggest acupuncture stimulates the nerv- ous system to release chemicals in the body that influence the body’s own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities. It can help strengthen the body’s resist- ance and can regulate the body’s antigen-antibody’s reactions. Eat Carefully During pollen season, it’s best to avoid foods that create damp in your system and eat foods that actively reduce damp. Damp form- ing foods, and the ones to avoid, include all forms of dairy, wheat (bread and all yeast products), pork, processed foods, sugar and sweeteners, beer and bananas. Foods to resolve dampness, mean- while, include barley, basmati rice, beans, lemons, lentils, vegetables such as button mushrooms, corn, pumpkin, radishes, turnips and fruits including papaya and the umeboshi plum. Increasing your intake of green and jasmine tea can also help. Certain herbs and spices are particularly effective when it comes to easing hay fever symp- toms, namely cayenne pepper, which stimulates blood circulation and stimulates secretions to clear a stuffy nose; cinnamon, which prevents infection and stimulates immune activity; onions, which contain a unique chemical com- ponent that acts as an antihista- mine; and garlic, which supports antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Essential Oils Hay fever sends your immune sys- tem into chaos, reacting to plants and dust by trying to push them out of your body. As essential oils are natural compounds, aromather- apy can be a great aid for hay fever symptoms. Eucalyptus, for exam- ple, can ease inflammation in the lungs, while rosemary can alleviate congestion. Lavender, meanwhile, is a natural antihistamine, pepper- mint relieves headaches resulting from stuffed sinuses and tea tree is a great natural choice for anti-aller- gy and building immunity. Ways To Tackle Hay Fever June has a high pollen forecast, which means plenty will suffer over the coming weeks. If you’re plagued with a runny nose, sneezing and itchy eyes, our expert is at hand. Whether you take a conventional or a more holistic approach to tackle it, here’s what she recommends… June 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

G: 15 months C: 20 years on and off What do you enjoy about the job? G: Making a difference to someone and I like seeing them happy and settled C: At the end of the day, you feel like you have achieved something, and it makes you feel good. What jobs have you both done before? And why is this different? C: I have worked on and off in care for 20 years, but I left care and went trucking with my husband, but now I have come back. I love the amount of quality time Home Instead allows you to spend with the client, you don’t feel rushed or stressed. You have time to get to know them as individuals which makes the visits relaxed and enjoyable. G: I have previously done farm work, office work and stock taking, and after having a break to look after my kids I worked in a supermarket. I enjoyed working with people so when I was looking for a new role, I wanted a role that offered variety, but also a role that fitted around my family. In my previous roles I have just been a number and sometimes they didn’t even know my name. At Home Instead it is different and its more personal. C: Yes, you do feel more part of team, there’s always someone at the end of the phone and I wouldn’t hesitate to ring because everyone is so nice. Do you feel that the job lived up to your expectations? C: It’s better, because of the longer visit time and the travel you get. My previous experience of care was always rush rush rush, there was no time to have a chat with the client and I would have to begin every visit with “sorry I am late”, you would have to pinch time from clients to keep up and I would feel bad and guilty …. but now it is a doddle. G: I had spoken to friends who have worked in care before, but they didn’t speak very positively or enthusiastically about the role, but I love coming to work and having adult conversations. What would you say to anyone thinking of thinking of career in care? C: Do it, it makes you feel good. I know we don’t do it for us, but it does give you a buzz. G: Just do it, it’s rewarding and doesn’t feel like work because your clients become your friends.

Hull City - by Woody Mellor After supporting Hull City for almost fifty years very little surprises me, sales, signings, sackings, takeovers, winding up orders and even lock-outs have coloured our history but the recent sacking of Liam Rosenior was a bit of a shock. I had visions that Brighton may come in for him they were rejected by some of their top choices to replace De Zerbi, he’s inexperienced but has established Brighton connections, but I didn’t expect a sacking. Around ten days earlier City had a very fleeting and unexpected opportunity to sneak into the play-offs. Results earlier in the weekend offered an opportunity to reach the top six if they could defeat Ipswich and Plymouth the following week. We had a fantastic 3-3 draw with Ipswich but barring a miracle the chance had gone. City were so close this season and realistically they had the players and the opportunity to challenge for the play-offs and actually win at Wembley. Prior to Easter it was firmly in their hands but defeat at home to Stoke and at Elland Road meant they would struggle to catch up with Norwich and West Brom. I like many, had pretty much given up by this stage but wins against Cardiff, QPR and Coventry meant it wasn’t completely out of reach, mathematically feasible though unlikely. Why did City fail to take this opportunity? There are so many suggestions and arguments over this. One obvious problem was the injury to Liam Delap at Christmas. City played half a season without a striker, various midfielders and wingers combined in our attack but their was no focal point or someone to aim for in the box. Lots of nice passing when they could and some great goals were scored by the likes of Tufan and Carvalho but we could rarely score more than once. Added to this was the home form. Acun raised this issue, City played like the away team in most games last season, lots of possession but a lack of attacking threat and when teams like Swansea and Stoke came for at least a point we had no penetration to break them down. Apparently we were in the top six for away performances and bottom six for home games. To try and improve on this City almost broke the bank to bring in attacking left backs, wingers and strikers in January yet Liam still continued as before with with midfielders up front as Sharp looked passed-it and Connolly and Ohio unfit. Lots of quality signed and still games with just a handful of chances created, especially at home. Another contentious issue for the owner was the goalkeeper. Alsop was a key element in the passing process in every game yet conceded a number of soft goals which ultimately cost points. Pandur was signed in January but Liam didn’t trust him or wished to introduce someone new to the established tactical routines. Ultimately it was not taking opportunities and silly mistakes which cost the play-off lottery and Rosenior’s job. So many games where two or three opportunities were frittered away and the opponents take their one chance to level or take the points. Added to this the points lost through mistakes and bad refereeing decisions. The 95th minute winner for Southampton from failing to deal with a throw in or the defeat at Norwich in August again minutes into injury time from a corner which wasn’t actually a corner. So many points thrown away and yet they still in with an opportunity in the final game, if it remained 1-1 at Carrow Road both teams would have more or less been level with two games to go! So after defeat at Plymouth Rosenior is sacked. If we reached the play-offs and promotion Acun would have been happy but he blamed it on the lack of attacking football, not utilising the players brought in for a promotion push and a few other long-standing tensions. Acun wants full houses for exciting home games next year but things are not guaranteed. The Premier league loanees have gone home and many signed due to Rosenior’s reputation in the game and style of football. Will we sign players of this quality next year? Building up the quality of the squad over the past two years has also built up the wage bill and debts so its also likely that Greaves and Philogene will be sold to satisfy Financial Fair Play requirements and squad rebuilding. The most obvious issue is finding someone who can rebuild the squad, build on what has been developed over 18 months and lead us to promotion. Someone has to bring exciting football and success in twelve months! Most fans expected Rosenior to have another full season to build on this year, find ways to score more goals , learn from experiences and take things a step further. This was not to be. Various managers have been linked and Tim Walter, a former Hamburg coach is the favourite at the moment. He’s got a lot of work to do to match and surpass this season but life’s full of surprises. An unexpected finale June 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

Motoring - In association with Lairgate Motors This month Elliot Johnson samples Volvo’s upcoming range-topper from the passenger seat. The seven-seat EV will initially be sold alongside hybrid XC90. THE Volvo EX90 will have a tough job on ts hands when it arrives later this year. The pure-electric seven- seat flagship SUV won’t just look to (eventually) replace the popular XC90, it’ll also act as the champion of the brand’s assault on the electric era. With so much at stake, we sent Elliot Johnson to get a rundown on the new model from its creators, and gather some initial impressions from the passenger seat. The EX90’s design and packaging aren’t a million miles from the XC90’s – and the older car with its hybrid powertrains will still be sold alongside the EV for now – but the new car sits on a brand-new electric-vehicle platform called SPA2, which fundamentally changes the game under the skin. There will be two powertrain options at launch. Both have dual motors; the base car gets 402bhp, while the Performance derivative packs 509bhp. They share an 111kWh battery pack (107kWh usable), which is underpinned by a 400V electrical system that will charge at up to 250kW, giving a 10-80 per cent top-up in around 30 minutes. The base version has a range of up to 364 miles, with the Performance model only a few miles behind. But we already know many of these facts and figures. Instead, we’re here to feel how the new car is going to ride and perform before Elliot gets behind the wheel himself later this year. First impressions show a clear emphasis on comfort and refinement, with our particular test car in a specification that’s expected to be popular in the UK. This includes the dual-chamber air suspension and middle 21-inch wheel option, both of which buffed away the edges of Volvo’s punishing test route. Our driver for the day was a principal engineer of vehicle dynamics, who explains: “Our cars must be predictable and safe; these are the most important attributes. Our air-suspension system has been designed with these two thoughts in mind from the very start.” There’s no way of getting around the fact this is a big, heavy car (2,750kg), so keeping that mass under control was crucial for Volvo’s team. “The steering is very important, so we have focused on steering feel just from the straight ahead, making it more accurate and controlled. The torque-vectoring differential is also important for this, because it helps keep the car stable at high speed.” That unit is the same as on the forthcoming Polestar 3, but there it’s designed to boost the power delivery at the rear axle. Here, it’s meant only to improve stability. Weaving through some of the highspeed sections, the EX90 feels stable and controlled. While there is some roll and pitch, it’s never unstable or floaty, even as the tarmac drops from beneath us on more aggressive undulations. This isn’t really something you could say of the most recent XC90, which many owners felt was bigger and heavier than it was. We do have some reservations over ride quality on the largest 22-inch wheels in the UK, but this is hypothetical until we’ve tried them out. While the exterior design is very slick, we can’t help feeling that perhaps it isn’t the leap forward that it could have been. Despite being all new, the body looks very similar to the XC90’s – only a touch more angular and with use of gloss black at the sills to hide the extra height of its body due to CLASSIC VEHICLE SHOW - ENTRIES WANTED for THE EAST YORKSHIRE SHOW at BRANTINGHAM PARK, HU15 1HX VINTAGE • CLASSICS • MODIFIED • PERFORMANCE • AMERICAN • BUSES MILITARY • TRUCKS & VANS • SCOOTERS & MOTORCYCLES • TRACTORS SUNDAY 14th JULY 2024 • 10am - 4pm Tel: Jane on 07502 456 979 to book your vehicle in. But so popular has the current XC90 been that a little design restraint will be neither surprising nor unwelcome to customers. Space inside is good, and the high floor hasn’t affected packaging in the third row. In the middle row, the floor is completely flat. One of the lead project designers told us EX90 customers don’t want to compromise on the luxury or versatility they’ve long enjoyed in their old XC90s. It’s worth noting the cabin ambience and user interfaces, because these will define the car for customers just as much as its high- speed cornering attitude. Volvo has had a firm grasp on its idea of modern luxury for decades, and things are no different with the new EX90, thanks to a combination of open-pore woods, plush fabrics and a general sense of quality. Of course, you’ll be expecting as much, considering the new EX90 will cost from £96,255 when it arrives in showrooms later this year. This makes its price nearly £20,000 more than a like-for-like Kia EV9. Whether the EX90 will be worth the extra remains to be seen, but Volvo’s pricing didn’t put buyers off when it last renewed its seven- seater flagship. Volvo EX90 statistics: Electric range (Up to) 363 miles Estimated DC fast charging time (10-80%) 30 min Power 517 hp (390 kW) Acceleration 4.9 seconds (0-62mph) For more information please go to: https://www.volvocars.com/uk/

I am writing this while enjoying the delights of the small Greek island of Amorgos in the middle of the Aegean. We enjoy coming here to join in their Orthodox Easter festivities which this year fell on the first weekend in May, long after our Easter. We toured around mainland Greece for ten days visiting some spectacular sites, e.g. Meteora, but being a plant lover the forests of Mt Pelion peninsular above Volos in the east and the Zagorochoria region and the Pindus mountains in the north-west delighted me as much as the clear blue sea of the Aegean. In a recent article I wrote about my passion for fritillaries, and one brief stop high up in a damp, grassy pasture in the mountains I was thrilled to spot some. They were not as striking as our snake’s head, but have the same nodding, bell-shaped flower. It was yellow/greenish orange in colour and I think it was Fritillaria involucrata. Having enjoyed hellebores in my garden this spring it was a treat to see them growing wild in the woods. Down here in the Aegean we are surrounded by the wonderful, vibrant Bougainvillea which needs temperatures above 10 degrees centigrade, so you may succeed with one in the summer but you will certainly have to move it indoors in the winter. A conservatory would be a perfect place for one and a huge range of colours are available – white, yellow, pink, purple, red or apricot. Beware – they need lots of room! It is native to South America, and it was first described in Europe by Philibert Commerçon, a botanist sailing with French admiral Louis Antoine de Bourganville on his voyage round the world. He departed from Nantes on 15th November 1756 and Commerçon took a fellow plant expert as his valet, who happened to be his lover – so she went disguised as a man! - and can claim the accolade of being the first woman to circumnavigate the world. It was not until 1932 that the plant was named after the admiral. IN THE GARDEN In June paeonies (peonies) make their entrance. They have been cultivated in China since the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-901) and have always been used symbolically in Chinese art and as motifs on china, stonework and ceramic tiles, etc. A tree paeony can grow up to four to five feet supported by its woody stems, while the herbaceous ones are about two to three feet in height but lack woody stems so need support as their large blooms tend to flop. The Netherlands produces the most paeony cut flowers – approximately 50 million stems a year with the pink ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ being the most popular. However, a new market is emerging in Alaska as it provides ideal growing conditions with its long hours of sun in mid to late summer. In the early twentieth century Alice Harding wrote her vintage book about paeonies. It is still highly regarded by many gardeners and still in print. A beautiful paeony was developed and named after her. It has large double white, fluffy, creamy flowers with golden stamens and a fragrance. Kelways of Langport have grown paeonies since the 1920s and their paeony fields became so popular that the train from London to Penzance would stop at a temporary halt so that passengers could alight and have a walk through the ‘paeony valley’. Other flowers are beginning to bloom now along with the paeonies. Astrantia major varieties (Masterwort) blend well with the showier plants. The flowers resemble an umbrella and are delicate and beautiful. Believe it or not it is in the same family as the carrot which we rarely see in flower as it is biennial and we have eaten it before it flowers. The wild carrot in the hedgerows, Daucus carota (above) is the one from which cultivars have been developed to give the carrot we know. Oriental poppies will be flaunting their glamorous blooms. You can get a succession of Alium blooms for a long time if you know which ones to plant. You can find a Bloomtime chart which will show you how you can have globe- shaped florescences in all sizes and colours for some time to add tall upright accents among other flowers. They seed themselves efficiently so if you wish to restrict this remove the seed heads; but that is a shame as they will continue to give structure to the garden for months. Geranium phaeum (dusky cranesbill or mourning widow), Saxifraga x urbium and Silene fimbriata blend well with showy plants. S. x urbium is called ‘London Pride’ because it grew up all over the bomb sites after the Blitz. This ‘Bombproof’ plant was demonstrating that life goes on! Iris sibirica and Aquilegia (Columbine) and of course roses will be bringing fragrance, structure and texture to the garden. Pelargonium (top right), Osteospernum and Scaveola are useful drought-resistant plants. Watch out for and remove scarlet red lily beetles which are vicious destructors consuming leaves, stems, buds and flowers of lilies if allowed free rein. You will need to pick them off and destroy them. I have read that coffee grounds spread at the base of the lily plant can possibly help in controlling the beetle. Patio fruit trees look tempting and worth a try in a small garden, on a patio or a balcony. I think that youngsters might develop an interest in gardening by nurturing one of these apple or pear trees. They do not take up too much room with their upright form so I might try them in my garden. ON THE PLOT Potatoes should be growing well now and will need earthing up to prevent the light reaching the new crop. Perhaps you got going early and are now at the stage of digging up your first new potatoes to enjoy with melting butter and parsley. I find digging up potatoes one of the most rewarding of activities to do on the plot, and sometimes in my enthusiasm I might have a sneak preview to see how they are doing – but I know that I should wait until they have flowered. I shall find a new spot for sweetcorn this year. I had great success last year, but the sweet peas I planted with them did not do particularly well at using the tall sweetcorn stems to climb up. Some crops need a lot of attention such as staking, dead-heading, slug protection, etc., but leeks are so easy and undemanding. Choose carefully and you can have leeks almost all year round by establishing a crop management programme starting with Stromboli, Pancho,or Jolant followed by Musselborough or Porbella, and finally Below Zero F1 hybrid or Cairngorm. Leeks need a long growing season between 120 and 150 days. I have never grown asparagus as I feel that it takes up so much room and you cannot interplant it successfully. However, as I watch the spears shooting up at an amazing speed on other people’s plots I think that I might relent and make life a bit easier by devoting a patch for a permanent asparagus bed. Once it has ceased producing spears it is a good time to top dress with well composted manure and high phosphorous fertiliser such as fish meal. The birds will be eager to get at your soft fruits so netting is essential, although I do find that some of them make their way in whatever. I am not that bothered these days as there is a limit as to how much redcurrent jelly the two of us are going to eat, anyway there are still two large boxes of them in the freezer from last year. A good way to help us through them is to make a breakfast compote with rhubarb, root ginger and brown sugar. It is good with ice cream, too. Broad bean plants may well need supporting now as their heavy pods weigh down the branches. Pinch outside shoots on tomatoes so that their energy goes into making tomatoes and not leaves. Remember to water runner beans when they are in flower to ensure good crop development. Apple and pear trees often have what is known as ‘June drop’ when newly formed fruit drop off, but if you are left with tight clusters of small fruit thinning out will ensure you get a few decent sized fruits rather than lots of tiddlers. Correct temperatures in the greenhouse are essential, and anything below 25 degrees C is best if you can achieve it by shading and ventilation. Temperatures above 30 degrees C will slow growth and one risks losing crops. Tomatoes, cucumbers ad peppers tolerate heat well if they are watered. A strict watering regime reaps benefits. You may be thinking ahead of growing brassicas for the winter such as kale or purple sprouting broccoli etc to plant out later. Cabbage root fly can be a problem as they lay their eggs on the surface adjacent to the stem, so you need to invent your own type of protection around the base of the stem using fleece, carpet or cardboard. Oriental greens such as Chinese Leaves and Pak Choi are sensitive to day length so do not get sowing them until after the longest day. Happy gardening. The Last Word FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife and Mum to two teenagers! It only takes a second to be polite! If there’s one thing that drives me mad, it’s people who can’t be bothered to say thank you. You know what I mean! Doesn’t it make you cross when you’re driving and you give way to another car coming in the opposite direction – and they don’t acknowledge it? Or how about when you’re walking down the road and a couple of people are walking up – and they expect you to move aside rather than them walk in single file for the briefest of moments? Or when you hold a door for someone and they just walk through it without even a smile or a nod? It takes no time at all to be polite – and good manners make the world of difference! Summer holidays are beckoning At the time of writing, we’ve had some lovely weather and the summer holidays are most definitely beckoning. It got me thinking, though, what essential items do you always pack? We’re going abroad this year, the first time since pre- Covid and I can’t wait! But I’m not talking about what clothes you’re taking, although that can be a dilemma. (I always take too much so I am determined to pack very lightly!) I’m also not talking about your passport (which I check a hundred times between the house and the airport). What little things do you always take just in case? I always take a good book, a puzzle book and a pack of cards (always handy when there are delays). What extras can you not do without? What are you watching? I’ve run out of things to watch! Please help me with recommendations! I’ve recently rewatched A Discovery of Witches, Downton Abbey, Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes and the first two series of The Crown. I’ve already watched Succession and Kin. I don’t know about you but I spend too much time scrolling through the multitude of channels/ streaming services on offer looking for something to watch. I don’t like horror things but murder mysteries, historical dramas and family sagas are right up my street! Thank you in advance! Have a great June everyone! I’ll look forward to your suggestions.
