Technology News July/Aug 2025 Get Your Business Noticed We All Have ‘Alice Moments’ We all have ‘Alice Moments’ times when we don’t quite know which way to turn. In a world changing so fast with AI, emerging technologies, and jobs that didn’t even exist a few years ago it’s no wonder so many teens feel a bit lost when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” As a parent, I think about this a lot. What kind of world will my children grow up in? What careers will even be out there? More than anything, I want them to stay curious, open-minded, and confident enough to embrace change but also to find a path that makes them feel happy and fulfilled, not just successful on paper. Homeschooling & Self-Paced Learning Not every young person follows a traditional path and that’s okay. In our family, we’ve been homeschooling our son for over a year now. It’s not always easy, and we’re still learning as we go but it’s shown us just how many different ways there are to grow and explore. One thing that’s really helped is using an online platform with a clear learning journey to work towards Functional Skills practical qualifications in English and Maths that focus on real-world understanding, not just exams. The flexibility has taken a lot of pressure off and made space for confidence to build at the right pace. Alongside the online learning, we’ve been getting out and about from go-karting at Hull Adventure, visiting The Deep, swimming to trying Rewilding Youth sessions and also shadowing me on community projects. I believe experiences have been just as valuable as anything taught in a classroom helping spark curiosity and develop real-life skills. Like any parent, I do think about the social side making sure there are opportunities for connection, communication, and friendship. But we’re taking it one step at a time and shaping the journey around what works best for us. Homeschooling isn’t the right path for everyone, what matters most is supporting each child in a way that feels right for them and helps them move forward with confidence and curiosity. Bringing Skills Bootcamps to Life at The Business Day The ‘Augmented Reality Curiosity Trail’ was launched at The Business Day in Bridlington a flagship annual event that brings together business leaders, innovators, and policymakers from across the Humber region - the ‘Augmented Reality Curiosity Trail’ a wonderland themed experience helped attendees explore real-world skills like adaptability, creativity, and collaboration in a playful, tech-driven way by scanning character themed portraits around the event. The trail also served to highlight the growing importance of lifelong learning. Today, it’s not just young people asking big questions about the future, adults are too. Whether it’s exploring a new career, adapting to a changing industry, or returning to work after time away, many people are recognising the need to learn new skills to stay relevant and resilient in a fast changing world. That’s where Skills Bootcamps come in. These free, flexible, government-funded courses are designed to help adults upskill quickly in high-demand areas such as digital, construction, green energy, and healthcare. Many Bootcamps lead directly to interviews and job opportunities, offering a practical and accessible route into new careers. No matter your age or stage you are in life or in your career, staying curious keeps you future ready and finding your path. At the end of the trail, participants received a tiny potion bottle with a scroll inside revealing Alice, see this in action below... House & Home exercise or treating yourself to a spa-style experience, a steam room is a useful - and indulgent - addition to your bathroom. Q What is a steam room? Also known as a Turkish bath or hammam, it’s similar to a sauna, but humidity reaches 100 per cent and the temperature is around 45- 48°C. You relax on a natural marble or stone bench, allowing a cloud of porcelain, ceramic or composite floor tiles. Add a wall-mounted heated towel rail and glossy, reflective surfaces such as gold or mirrored chrome for a little extra luxury. Investing in a few high-end toiletries to keep out on show will also help to maintain that hotel chic feel - nothing says boutique spa more than a few bottles of quality body-wash and lotion on display beside the bath. LIGHT IT RIGHT Add dimmer switches so you can easily control the atmosphere of the room. It may be a busy family bathroom by day, but being able to turn down the lights will help to generate the perfect warm glow for a peaceful night-time soak. Wow factor lighting, such as a showstopping pendant above the bath or LED spotlights around the base of a freestanding tub, will give your finished bathroom that extra- special edge. STEAM ROOMS Revitalising as well as relaxing, a steam room is just the antidote to a hectic lifestyle. Here’s how to install one... Perfect for winding down in at the end of a busy day, relaxing after warm steam to envelop your body, soothing tired muscles, helping with decongestion and eliminating impurities in the skin. Q How much space do I need? Surprisingly, not much. There are solutions to suit different settings and budgets, from a compact cabin with built-in steam system to a bespoke design to fit your room. A steam room can be fitted in a ‘regular’ shower enclosure, provided it is fully enclosed and watertight, and you may want to include a bench or foldaway seat. An electricity supply and steam generator, fitted outside the enclosure, are required. It also needs a connection to the water supply and drains, which is why it makes sense to install a steam room in a bathroom. Q Can I add any extra features? Aromatherapy, mood lighting (it must be immersion proof) and music systems are available. You can also include body massage jets and an overhead shower to push the luxe vibe to the limit. Q Do I need professional installation? Yes, to avoid a disappointing fit and a steam room that doesn’t do the job properly, it’s important to buy from a reputable supplier and use a fully qualified electrician and installer. House & Home How to have a home that smells like a luxury spa 3. DIY refreshing spray made from water, vodka and essential oils Mix 1 cup water, 1/4 cup vodka (plain, not with lime, please), and 10–15 drops of essential oil of your choice (lavender, lemongrass, peppermint). Pour into a spray bottle and freshen curtains, sofas, bedding—and yourself if you’re out of perfume. 4. Citrus peels in the drain – lemonade for your sink Drain odour is one of the more stubborn kitchen nuisances. But nature wins here too. Drop some fresh lemon or orange peels down the drain and turn on your grinder if you have one. No grinder? Pour hot water over the peels. It works wonders – and without the sewer- smelling drains. 5. Microwave + vanilla = mini bakery Mix two teaspoons of vanilla extract with a little water in a bowl, place it in the microwave, and heat on high for 5 minutes. The microwave will get rid of any odours from previous re-heatings (yes, we’re talking about yesterday’s fish), and your apartment will smell like vanilla cake. And all without baking. 6. Vinegar – the secret enemy of cigarette smoke and mustiness Vinegar in a cup? Yes, it sounds simple, because it is. Place it in a room that smells of smoke or dampness and leave it overnight. As soon as our noses smell something unpleasant in our homes most people will reach for the artificial air freshener! However, there is a better way to freshness at home – natural, simple and even cheaper. With a few smart tricks, you can freshen the air in your home and create a feeling of freshness, as if you had just ventilated the entire Himalayas. And all without artificial scents that turn into a headache after three seconds. Below you will find nine proven methods that will transform your home into fragrant oasis – purely natural and without eco-effort. 9 natural solutions for freshness at home 1. Baking soda against pet odors If your furry roommate brings more odour than joy, it’s time for a classic baking soda. Sprinkle it on carpets, sofas, and other soft surfaces, let it sit for a few hours (ideally overnight), then vacuum thoroughly. Baking soda absorbs unpleasant odours like a sponge - fast, quiet, and effective. 2. Homemade “wellness” shrimp – simmer pot (pictured right) Make a fragrant mixture with water, cinnamon sticks, citrus peels (lemon, orange, grapefruit – whatever you have on hand) and a sprig of rosemary. Bring to a boil and let it simmer gently on the stove. Your home will smell like a Christmas market with the aroma of fresh lemonade. Bonus: great camouflage for “what-did-you- cook-yesterday” smells. It doesn’t mask odours, it breaks them down. No chemicals, no scent of perfumed cleaner. Just vinegar – and pure freshness. 7. Coffee – aromatherapy for your fridge Coffee smell in the fridge? No, this isn’t a new hipster idea, but an effective trick. A cup of coffee grounds absorbs unpleasant odours from the fridge and perfumes it with the subtle aroma of an espresso bar. It doesn’t get any classier than that. 8. Plants that purify the air and add fragrance Peace lilies, aloe vera, spider plants – these are not just potted plants that survive neglect, but true air purifiers. They remove toxins, humidify the air, and emit a natural freshness, as if you were placing a natural filter with a green flavour in the room. 9. Charcoal – not just for grilling Activated charcoal works as a natural odour absorber. Take a few briquettes (plain charcoal, no additives), seal them in an airtight bag, and place them in a closet, bathroom, or damp basement. The charcoal will draw out moisture and mustiness like a superhero without a cape. 9 eco-friendly tricks for a fragrantly fresh home without a drop of chemicals. Literature coast. Owner Francesca Meadows has transformed her inherited estate into a high-end resort, draw- ing both admiration and resent- ment from the local community. As guests gather for a lavish summer solstice celebration, old tensions resurface, secrets emerge, and a body is discovered. The haunting grip of the past is about to rear its ugly head. Atmosphere: A Love Story by Taylor Jenkins Reid Taylor Jenkins Reid (The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Daisy Jones and the Six) returns with a story set in 1980s America. Astrophysics professor Joan Goodwin begins training to be an astronaut at Houston’s Johnson Space Centre, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates. As the new astronauts prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined, and begins to question everything she believes about her place in the observable universe. Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, everything changes in an instant. .. Albion by Anna Hope When family members fight over the legacy of their inherited country estate, all hell breaks loose in this Succession-meets-Saltburn novel from British writer Anna Hope. The Brookes gather in their ancestral home to bury Philip, the head of the family. Frannie, who will inherit the land, dreams of rewilding it to combat climate change, while Milo envisions a luxury retreat for the wealthy under the influence of psychedelics. Both believe their father gave them his blessing to carry out their ambition plans, setting them on a collision course. Isa has long suspected that her father thought only of himself, and only hopes to seek out her childhood love, who still lives on the estate, to discover what her marriage is lacking. Then there’s Claram who arrives in their midst from America, shrouded in secrets, Food Person by Adam Roberts Food writer Adam Roberts’ debut novel follows the journey of aspiring cookbook author Isabella Pasternack. When she’s fired from her job at a digital food magazine, she accepts a thankless job for the paycheck: ghostwrite the cookbook for a once-beloved, 30-something actress, Molly Babcock. Molly, trying to repair her reputation after a serious downward spiral, meets Isabella’s earnest attempts to connect with inconsistency and cruelty. But, for the first time in her life, Isabella is determined to dig her heels in and figure out if Molly knows how to cook (or even likes to eat). The unlikely duo gets to work, before the lingering heat between them quite literally reaches a boiling point. Hunger by Choi Jin-Young Korean fiction is having a moment in the UK, and the latest translation to hit the shelves is this gritty love story by Choi Jin-young. Perfect for readers who loved Butter by Asako Yuzuki, the story begins in medias res, when a woman finds her partner murdered on the street. She cradles his corpse to her chest and carries it home, where she disinfects every inch of skin before seating herself to begin. What follows reverberates from this realm into the next, where the man is witnessing his own funeral. It’s a twisted yet poetic exploration of love, death and grief. The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley The Mid- night Feast unfolds at the grand opening of The Manor, a luxurious wellness retreat on the Dorset and bearing a truth that will shatter all their hopes and dreams. Picture Imperfect by Jacqueline Wilson A year after releasing her first adult novel, Jacqueline Wilson once again revisits old characters from one of her beloved children’s books. Picture Imperfect is the sequel to The Illustrated Mum. Dolphin Westward spent her childhood as the supporting character in the story of her beautiful, wild, volatile mother Marigold. Now 33, she’s painfully aware that not much has changed. She lives in a tiny bedsit, works in a tattoo shop by day, and collects her mum from police stations by night. Stuck in a rut, Dol must choose between the promise of a wholesome life with gentle gardener Lee, the thrill of a fling with charming actor Joel, or a fresh start in Scotland with her sister’s family. Tantrum by Rachel Eve Moulton In this electric horror, Thea suspects something is deeply wrong with her newborn daughter – and she’s right. Born with a full set of teeth and an insatiable appetite, baby Lucia is no ordinary child. When she points to her brother and says, “I eat,” Thea isn’t sure whether to be horrified or proud. As Lucia grows rapidly and her hunger intensifies, Thea begins to experience disturbing flashbacks from her own childhood. With a devilish glint in her eye, Lucia seems set on devouring the world – and Thea, worn down and mesmerised, might just be willing to let her do it. I Know Where You Buried Your Husband by Marie O’Hare This sharp debut is centred on a group of women who have been friends since school: Sophia, Safa, Ella, Ajola and Caoimhe. When one of them is nearly framed for murder, they bury the evidence, make a pact and go their separate ways. Years later, an anonymous blackmailer threatens to reveal their secret. Forced to reunite, they must get their stories straight and uncover who is tormenting them. But as tensions rise, they wonder: is it already too late to save themselves? Maggie: Or, A Man and a Woman Walk into a Bar by Katie Yee A woman walks into a restaurant expecting samosas and ends the night discovering her husband’s affair – with someone named Maggie. Soon after, she’s diagnosed with breast cancer and names the tumour… Maggie. Told in sharp, lyrical fragments, this debut charts her journey through heartbreak and healing. She writes a guidebook for her husband’s mistress, speaks to her tumour, and weaves Chinese folktales into bedtime stories – reclaiming her identity, culture and sense of self along the way. Men In Love by Irvine Welsh Over 30 years since his seminal book Trainspotting was released (and turned into a cult film by Danny Boyle), Irvine Welsh returns to its dysfunctional characters. Heroin is in the past, Thatcher’s reign is ending, and Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie are chasing new highs – raves, romance and redemption. Reuniting after a botched drug deal, they follow the beat of the dancefloor and the pull of a new era. Sick Boy falls hard for Amanda – wealthy, well connected, and everything he isn’t. When wedding plans begin, he sees a shot at reinvention. But as the 90s approach, can love really save them – or is it just another delusion in a chaotic search for meaning? Health & Beauty Rebekah’s Beauty Box The SPF Make-Up That I Always Travel With For years, I came back from holiday with dark spots on the apples of my cheeks, despite having been assiduous with my broad-spectrum SPF50. It took me a while to realise that I got the discolouration exactly where I rub on my liquid blush – whose formula clearly dissolved some of my sunscreen. The solution? Allowing sunscreen to settle on skin for a good ten minutes before applying make- up has helped, as has dabbing on colour cosmetics instead of rubbing them in. But there is an easier way: make-up infused with sunscreen. Until quite recently, these products – mostly tinted moisturisers and foundations – were not to be relied upon when in need of serious sun protection: the SPF factors were too low, there were no UVA filters and no sweat- resistance. But with serious suncare brands wading into the make-up space over the past few years, not just your base, but your lip balm and even your blusher and eyeshadow have become summer vacay-proof. It means you can slap on your make-up and trot off to the beach, safe in the knowledge that your skin is protected and you look pretty good. Of course, you’ll still have to re-apply every two hours or get out of the sun. And it’s important to reiterate that not all make-up boasting an SPF is good enough poolside or on your yacht (or dinghy): you want to concentrate on suncare-first brands to get the level of protection required. Here are some of my top picks… SKIN Face Fluid Anti-Pigmentation Tinted SPF50+ £32 | ULTRASUN Ultrasun formulas are meticulously formulated with next-gen chemical and mineral UV filters to deliver protection that lasts significantly longer than most other sunscreens, all without irritating skin or causing any pilling. Their golden ‘honey’ tint works on dark skin tones and really lifts and unifies my light one – this non- greasy fluid is one of my favourite tinted moisturisers. All that and it helps fade brown spots too. Daily Shield Lotion Tinted SPF50 £56.98 | EPIONCE Not by a sunscreen brand, but its very high level of zinc oxide plus titanium dioxide gives solid broad- spectrum protection that’s hugely hardy (it’s water-resistant for 80 minutes): you definitely need to double-cleanse to get it off. The texture is thick but fluffy and cloud-like, and it blurs pores and lines, while the milky, semi-sheer hot choc-shade is very flattering on lighter skin tones. On dark skin, it probably has too much of a white undertone to really work. Daydream Screen SPF50 Tinted Veil £38 | ULTRA VIOLETTE This feels like a rich tinted serum but is oil-free and, because it has no mineral filters (which are powder suspensions), you can build the colour and top up your protection without the risk of pilling. Comes in 15 shades across the spectrum. The Invisible One Primer SPF50 £20 (WAS £25) | HELLO SUNDAY If you just want to wear your own foundation, make it beach-proof by anchoring it to this water and sweat-resistant broad-spectrum primer. A clear gel, it velvetises and mattifies skin so well that it’s hard to believe it’s silicone-free. UV Base Daily Care SPF50 £49 | BY TERRY If you don’t like the super-slick feel of traditional primers, this is a light, hydrating cream-gel alternative that has just enough tack to keep your foundation in place. Apart from a broad- spectrum SPF50, it has niacinamide and vitamin E, so it triples as an antioxidant moisturiser. Complexion Rescue Brightening Under Eye Concealer SPF25 £25 | BAREMINERALS Based on mineral UV filter titanium dioxide, this offers good UVB protection but is only a limited UVA shield, so get extra help from your sunglasses or your regular sunscreen. Saturdays for 7 nights Free Afternoon Tea & Door to Door £25 We know the island well, call for details Panama Canal transit… This is a must for your bucket it list. The whole journey from start to finish San Francisco to Miami exceeded expectations. This journey was carefully chosen one to not clash with our ski season and secondly I wanted a full daylight transit. Everything else that came with it was a bonus! This cruise was booked on the first day it was on for sale. We had been waiting 30 months for this holiday to depart. Before reaching the Panama whilst sailing we were enriched with lectures about the attempts and the eventual building of the Panama. Can you believe, when the first transit happened in 2014 it only made page 22 in the New York times. This was due to the outbreak of WW1 which took presidence. We where the last cruise ship though the canal until October, we did have some rough seas following a close shave with three cyclones but our captain was on the last leg of his world cruise and no way was he going to miss a port. A great bonus sailing at this time of the year down the coast of California was to see hundreds of Whales migrating north just as David Attenborough had said in one of his documentaries. They were everywhere tails popping out of the water and their blow holes spouting. I was like a kid in a candy shop! I woke at 5am ready for our transit through the Canal just as the sun was rising. We took on our pilot, Panama City was visible in the distance along with the Bridge of Americas. We only had a short wait in the bay with the other ships and we were off! Our passage had been paid in advance at a mega cost of $350,000 hence why it is not a common route for cruise ships. On average there are 35 ships transiting a day pre covid it was around 45. As we got closer to the bridge we headed to breakfast on deck to get a good view from the rear of the ship. The entrance is well protected with breakwaters built with the excavated rock from the canal as shown in the top photograph. Today we had the perfect weather and managed to stay ahead of schedule. Our Panama expert was on the bridge for the full day until our transit was complete just before 5pm. Many of us were also viewing our ship from a different angle including on the webcam (Panama Canal Webcams) we tried to see ourselves waving from the top deck of the ship. Our transited took us through the original old locks that for me was a bonus following in footpaths of many before us. New bigger locks were opened alongside in 2016 to take bigger ships. On our entry into the lock we were hooked up to the mules, sea- faring friends had said don’t forget to take some carrots! These mules are actually trains attached to the ship a man in a rowing boat brought out the lines to the ship — two were attached at the front and one at the back on each side. These are not to pull the ship through but to keep it straight in the middle of the lock. We had 3 locks to ascend each lift being 27ft to enter the Culebra Cut. This passage was very difficult to build as the banks kept collapsing. They still constantly dredge this section and ships have to be courteous to pass the narrowest points. This of course can delay your passage when busy. The dammed River Chagres also flows into this section from Lake Alajueia. From here, we flowed into the huge man made Lake Gatun the largest in the world when it was constructed. We sailed across the lake for 27 miles dotted with islands before reaching the Gatun locks for our descent into Limon Bay passing the city and port of Colon. From here we flow out into the Caribbean Sea. At this point I felt a little deflated our journey was coming to an end but visiting Cartegana, Grand Cayman and Miami soon lifted my spirits. My next canal journey will be the Caledonian from Oban to Inverness next April. This is not a first for me, we did this sailing back in 2007 it has just taken a while to charter the ship “Lord of the Glens” again. It will also be a great experience I have lots of tales & memories from the last one! Until September, happy travels—remember, travel truly is a tonic for the soul. We are here to make your dreams reality where ever in the world you choose to travel. Don’t hesitate to get in touch. Best wishes Northern Lights 1st Feb 2026 5 day full board package, packed with activities fly from Humberside £1279 Panama City Bridge of Americas Webcam shot of our ship Approaching the first lock Culebra Cut Chagres River Islands in Gatun Lake

Food & Drink A Sommelier Shares His Favourite Summer Wines WHITE Manousakis ‘FUMM’ Athiri-Thrapsathiri, £18.50 I recently introduced this wine by the glass at Oma’s sister restaurant Agora, and it’s a pure vibe. It’s a delightful blend of two indigenous Cretan varieties and offers a crisp, dry profile that’s both refreshing and intriguing. Expect lively citrus notes, a touch of salinity and a lemon sherbet acidity. It’s perfect for those who appreciate a lively and dynamic sip, and goes well with summery salads and Mediterranean starters. Monfarina Domaine Giachino Jacquère 2022, £24 This wine bursts with alpine energy, with aromas of white flowers, citrus zest and wet stone, followed by a palate packed with chalk and herbs. On hot days, this wine can transport you to the cool, crisp air of the Alps. One for those who love precision, texture and freshness. Plus, it works amazingly with goat’s cheese or grilled fish. Bodegas Gaintza, Txakoli, 2023, £21.20 Is it even summer without a good txakoli? This Spanish wine speaks of the coast with its vibrant, zesty citrus notes, reminiscent of green apple and lime, and a lively fizz. A crisp minerality, tinged with hints of sea breeze and salt, adds Ardi is the man behind one of Hull’s most exciting wine lists. As head of wine at Da Gianni, he’s helped the authentic Italian restaurant bag some top reviews. Here, he’s sharing his go-to bottles for summer. All coming in at under £25, these are the crisp whites, juicy rosés and characterful sparklers you’ll be drinking all season long. to its fresh and uplifting character. It’s incredibly refreshing, so pairs well with sashimi-style dishes, or simply with some nuts and olives. ROSÉ Entre Vinyes Oniric Rosat, £18 A perfect balance of vibrant fruit and subtle complexity, this wine is my go-to alternative to Provençal rosé. It opens with enticing aromas of ripe strawberries and redcurrants, with a note of Mediterranean rosemary. On the palate, it’s crisp and refreshing, with lively acidity that enhances the fruit and brings out a mineral touch. Its only flaw is that it’s too easy to drink. This is another wine perfect for aperitivo time – I love it with hummus and crackers, olives and crudités. Rosé de Xinomavro, Thymiopoulos 2023, £13.95 This isn’t just my favourite – it’s also a hit with the team and our guests at Oma, and is sure to go down well with your friends at your next summer BBQ. It stands out with its unique aromatic complexity. It’s driven by fresh notes of wild raspberries, rose petals and a distinct tomato leaf aroma that adds an intriguing gastronomic profile. On the palate, it’s soft yet structured, with juicy red fruit balanced by savoury undertones. It’s a wine that captures both freshness and depth, with a complexity that lingers. This is your summer BBQ wine to surprise your friends with. Bottiglia 03, Rosato Della Serva, £14.90 This rosato is pure sun-soaked charm – the ultimate picnic wine. It opens with aromas of wild strawberries, blood orange and a hint of rose petals. On the palate, it’s juicy yet balanced. There is a rustic elegance here, like summer in the Italian countryside captured in a bottle. Enjoy it with pasta salad with prosciutto and melon. SPARKLING Filipa Pato, 3B Blanc de Blancs, NV, £19.50 This sparkling wine is the perfect choice for summer, offering a refreshing feel with every pour. It greets you with vibrant aromas of orchard fruits and a touch of white flowers. The zesty acidity and clean finish make it an ideal option when you want something light, but with enough personality to keep you going back for more. I love it with a simple white fish and a well-seasoned salad. Camillo Donati, Lambrusco Rosso, £22 Lambrusco is a fantastic year-round option, but it truly shines as the perfect summer wine for those craving red on a warm day. With aromas of dark cherries, blackberries and a hint of earthy and savoury spice, it’s both refreshing and full of character. The bubbles and natural acidity provide a crisp sensation on the palate, so it’s perfect when you want a red that’s light and easy drinking, but with enough depth. Pair it with cheese and charcuterie meats. Foam Vulkan, £19.79 This sparkling wine has a fresh, energising quality that’s perfect for summer. It opens with vibrant aromas of green fruits, citrus peel and a touch of wildflowers, and the bubbles give it a lively, zingy feeling on the palate that I love. The bright acidity and slight salinity make it refreshing and crisp. It’s just the kind of wine I reach for when I want something light and exciting. So good with oysters. Parenting you could watch You Tube shorts on a Nintendo Switch, she’d already been exposed to the content for some time. Lesson number one: learn about the tech they’re using. Tweens and teens are naturally drawn to social media and screens, says Maria. ‘Their dopamine system has a heightened response to novelty, meaning the instant gratification from likes, comments and new content is addictive. Because the prefrontal cortex is still developing, they struggle to regulate screen time.’ Importantly (this is where I come unstuck), it’s about modelling healthy behaviour. I’m on my phone a lot and justify it by saying that it’s work. If you want your teen to spend less time on a screen, then you need to think about your own screen time, too; Maria says. Setting boundaries is also important. Mealtimes, bedtimes and homework are a good start. Homework stress When I was young, the tactic was to scare kids into doing homework. I had a teacher who told me I’d probably end up in prison if I didn’t pass my GCSEs. But when young brains are stressed, it’s exaggerated because the amygdala is highly sensitive - small setbacks can seem catastrophic. Suddenly, the fact that they ‘can’t find my favourite Sharpie pen means the world is ending. Maria suggests parents break tasks down into realistic study plans and promote a growth mindset. ‘Help them understand that mistakes aren’t a reflection of their worth. Remind them that every successful person has faced setbacks. General rudeness Many parents of teens say that their teen has suddenly become massively disrespectful. The eye rolling. The slammed doors. The mean put-downs. My daughter says I look terrible whenever I get my hair cut. At times, I look so ‘terrible’ she won’t walk with me. Let me start this piece by saying I love my tween daughter. Billie is 12 years old and makes me laugh so much that my sides physically ache. She introduces me to new fashion trends and music (and is then mortified when I rap along to Doechii). She stops me getting stuck in my ways. She’s also a card-carrying member of Gen Alpha (the demographic group born roughly between 2010 and 2025). These kids love food. Not chicken nuggets or my 1980’s favourite, Findus Crispy Pancakes, but Korean BBQ and bubble tea. They also love rubbing pricey skincare brands into their faces. They’re savvy, sassy and seem more sophisticated than we did at their age, listening to our Sony Sports Walkman and eating Monster Munch. But are they really? The brain doesn’t finish developing until your mid-to- late 20’s, and one of the last parts is the prefrontal cortex. This area is responsible for planning and making good decisions. Beneath the glossy surface, the tween brain is still all over the place. It takes a village to navigate these choppy developmental waters. So, as parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and godparents brace for school holidays and days full of family time, I reached out to parent and teen coach Maria Creswell for advice on raising Gen Alpha. Remember, it’s about that pesky prefrontal cortex not being fully developed. As a result, they find it hard to regulate emotions and so may appear rude or dismissive. Independence wars Building resilience during the tween and early teen years is crucial. This involves some letting go. While apps and trackers mean you can follow them digitally at all times, I know I need to build trust. ‘We only learn through certain experiences, so we have to be mindful of giving them some of the freedom we had growing up, Maria says. If you’re haunted by mistakes you made as a teen, take heart. You survived and learned a massive amount. You can do this. Raising Gen Alpha builds our own resilience, too, right? 5 Golden Rules of raising Gen Alpha l Start conversations about difficult things. Online, today’s kids are exposed to far more troublesome content than we were. Make sure yours knows they can talk to you if they see content that disturbs or concerns them. Porn is a classic example - let them know you’re open to talking about it if they need to. Sometimes it’s easier to do this with a trusted adult who’s not their parent. l Model the values and behaviour you want from them. If you’re stuck on your phone or laptop and constantly in a panic, you can’t really preach about screen time and being mindful and calm. Be the person you want them to be. l Encourage positive self-talk. Some of us were criticised and cajoled into good behaviour as children. Instead, try to reassure your children that you know they’re doing their best. Mistakes are normal and help you learn and grow. l Find screen alternatives. Encourage some activities that get them outside, or a hobby that drags them away from their phones and the TV. Grandparents can be particularly good at this, passing down skills and hobbies. l Share stories. I often talk about how difficult I found my teen years and how I found a way through. Sure, I sometimes get a bored expression, but it helps to remind my daughter that, while the world looked different, tween problems are age-old and it almost always works out in the end. YOUR POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER JONATHAN EVISON I’m pleased to bring you the latest update from my office on the work we are doing to improve community safety in the East Riding. As we progress through the summer months, we welcome the new Mayor of the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority, Luke Campbell. I am delighted to sit on the board with them and believe together, we can help make our region an outstanding place to live, work and visit. In April, we welcomed the arrival of the new Chief Constable of Humberside Police, Chris Todd. The performance of Humberside Police continues to improve and remains the highest performing force in the country with three outstanding gradings from the independent inspectorate. Our communities deserve the best service, and I will be challenging Mr Todd to continue this trajectory for the force so that the public continue to see sustainable improvements in service. Chief Constable Todd said “I am delighted and hugely honoured to have joined Humberside Police as Chief Constable. I intend to bring consistent, stable and ethical leadership and build on the excellent work that is already being delivered every day across the Humber region. “Through my leadership I will be striving to make Humberside Police an outstanding, globally acclaimed Police Service which is, victim focused, community focused and workforce focused. I would like the communities we serve to have confidence in and be proud of the service they receive from the force.” Please follow us on social media and subscribe to My Community Alert to be notified of the work we are doing in your area. In April, the Home Office announced an additional £200m investment for Neighbourhood Policing available to Police Forces in 2025/26, with Humberside receiving just over £3.2m. This will enable the force to recruit 38 new Neighbourhood Policing Officers. Neighbourhood Policing is vital to the British Policing Model, and I want to make sure it is more accessible to all our communities. Humberside Police proactively shares details of your local neighbourhood team’s priorities and surgery sessions online for those that want to keep up to date on work in their community. As highlighted in the latest independent inspection, Humberside Police already have an effective Neighbourhood Policing model, however we will always welcome initiatives to help us to continue to improve the service provided to our communities. Commissioned by the Humber Violence Prevention Partnership (Humber VPP), Youth Connect is a website for 11-to-18-year-olds who are looking to explore new interests, develop skills and contribute to their community. The platform is part of a strengths-based campaign to encourage young people to take part in positive activities as an alternative to being drawn into crime or violence. The comprehensive directory of activities – including sports clubs, art classes and silent discos – covers Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire. Youth Connect also lists relevant support services so young people have access to any help they may need. 29 As your Police and Crime Commissioner, I am elected to be your local representative on policing and community safety. It’s my job to work on your behalf to ensure Humberside Police provide an effective and efficient police force and both support and hold the Chief Constable to account for their performance. I am conducting a survey to give you the opportunity to have your say on community safety and help shape policing in your area. The survey should take no more then 10 minutes to complete and is anonymous. Please scan the QR code, or visit www.humberside-pcc.gov.uk/ get-involved/consultations GIVE YOUR SAY ON POLICING Following a successful pilot in 2024/25, I am delighted to announce the extension of the Speed Indicator Devices (SID) Grant Scheme to enable projects to be delivered by the end of March 2026. Grant funding is available to Town and Parish Councils, as well as other voluntary and community sector organisations, to enable the installation of additional Speed Indicator Devices to reduce instances of speeding and improve road safety across North Lincolnshire. SIDs offer a traffic management solution to help reduce vehicle speeds and create safer and cleaner roads. These electric signs display a speed or message when triggered by vehicles travelling at excessive speeds. The scheme can provide up to 50% funding towards the cost of the purchase and installation of a SID. Applications are open on a rolling basis for any scheme that has secured approval from the relevant Local Authority. Together, we can help make our roads safer. The Motoring Column BUILDING on the Land Rover Defender’s recent suite of subtle updates, the British brand has revealed a new version of the 4x4 that celebrates the ‘epic adventures’ possible from behind the wheel. Formally called the Land Rover Defender Trophy Edition, this high-spec model will offer a range of bespoke styling elements, plus a choice of accessories that promise to be as useful on an expedition to the Sahara desert as on a trip to your local garden centre. The Trophy Edition’s changes start with the option of two unique colours: Keswick Green and Deep Sandglow Yellow. These are complemented by gloss black highlights across the bonnet and lower bodywork, plus a unique styling treatment on the front and rear skid plates, wheelarch extensions and 20-inch wheels. Those wheels are fitted with standard all-terrain tyres. The big alloys are part of a series of range-wide upgrades, to clear the larger brakes on high-powered models – allowing buyers to combine the rugged, utilitarian look of steel wheels with a highspecification powertrain. On that note, the Trophy will be offered as a P400e plug-in hybrid or D350 diesel. Land Rover has also revealed an optional curated accessories package will be available, which includes a rugged roof-mounted carrier, fold-down ladder, externally mounted ‘gear carriers’, mud flaps and a snorkel. This is capped off on all models by bespoke graphics and decals in a matching shade. Inside, the exterior paint colour is also applied to the steel back-plate mounted on the dash. This is the first time Land Rover has offered a coloured option for this beyond the standard white, grey and black. However the rest of the cabin is more restrained, featuring highspec black Windsor leather trim alongside the 2026 model’s upgraded infotainment system. The Trophy Edition is available to order now with prices starting from £82,900 for the P400e, plus £4,995 for the optional accessories pack, with the diesel-engined model carrying a £1,915 premium. Land Rover has not said the Trophy will be sold in restricted numbers, but it will only be available for a limited time. Adventure theme for Defender special... KIA has announced pricing for its most expensive model yet, with the new high-performance EV9 GT priced from £82,185. Deliveries will start this autumn and two versions will be offered, with the only difference being their seating layouts. For an extra £1,000 over the standard seven seater, the £83,185 six-seat variant includes more indulgent captain’s chairs in the second row, with full electric adjustment and a pass- through to the third row. Underpinning the EV9 GT’s upgrades is a big power boost to 501bhp, generated by two electric motors. There is a 214bhp front unit and a 362bhp rear motor, with total peak power providing that combined figure. This is a 122bhp increase over the existing dual- motor GT-Line car, and provides a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds. The GT’s battery pack is the same 99.8kWh, 800V unit as in the standard long-range EV9 model. This allows ultra-highspeed charging at more than 200kW, which will top up the EV9 GT’s battery from 10-80 per cent in 24 minutes. 1,250bhp Chevrolet ZR1X CHEVROLET has confirmed details of the powertrain in its new ZR1X, the most powerful Corvette ever. Its hypercar-baiting 1,250bhp comes from a hybridised set-up that combines a twin-turbocharged V8 engine and an electrified front axle. The engine features cutting- edge motorsport technology, while the front axle incorporates a 186bhp electric motor and a compact 1.9kWh battery pack to drive the front wheels completely independently of the rear. Chevrolet has not finalised performance figures, but suggests that 0-60mph will be possible in under two seconds. Just about the only number that doesn’t match up to a hypercar is the price, which is $178,195, or £132,243 at current exchange rates.

I am writing this in mid June with a light breeze and glorious sunshine making the garden dazzle with colour. Last Saturday I added to my collection of dazzlers when I helped on a garden stall at a Wood Lane residents’ fund-raiser for prostate cancer. There was plenty to buy – delicious cakes, hundreds of books and loads of plants. Thanks to the generosity of donors the plant stall had something for everyone from beginners to dedicated gardeners. Grow a sunflower competition was popular, but Hostas, Agapanthus and Rodgersia won the day. I fell for the largest Hosta which we could have sold over and over again, and I also bought some small alpine Hostas which are a new venture for me. Agapanthus has gained popularity recently and there are many varieties from which to choose. I can report that I have buds developing on those in my garden which over the winter I protected with masses of fern leaves. A demo on how to grow your own pea shoots caught some interest. Just take a bag of marrow fat peas, fill a pot almost to the top with compost, put a handful of peas on top, cover them with vermiculite or a little more compost, water, and leave on a window ledge. Pea shoots will appear in a few weeks which you can cut off to mix in your salads, and then a new crop will grow shortly. You should get several crops from one sowing. My fellow stall-holder said that you usually do not make much money on a plant stall, but that proved wrong as we raised over £300. There are some keen gardeners in Beverley eager to part with their money when they see an interesting plant. IN THE GARDEN A word of warning for the coming months: the Anglos-Saxon scholar Bede is recorded as saying that “Vueod-Monath [the month of August] is the month of weeds, as this is the time when they grow most abundantly.” So, you have been warned. Our awareness of the importance of insects for pollination in our gardens is increasing. One garden centre I recently visited has arranged many of its plants under a section named ‘Plants for Pollinators’. Not only are insects essential for pollination, but also for controlling pests. We are surrounded by fields of monoculture crops which are sitting targets for an ‘all-you-can-eat breakfast’ for some pests. So there is a need for verges and gardens to help boost the pest- controlling insects. Having spotted a ladybird larva, which I mentioned in the last edition, I have got my eye in now and am spotting more and more of them. It is of course, the season for them, but to increase my knowledge I have uploaded a free app called ‘Obsidentify’ which is helping me to look more carefully. Research in Italy has reported that plants may play a more active role in the process of pollination than was previously thought. Plants can perceive their surroundings in a variety of ways. Growing evidence shows that insects and plants can sense or transmit vibroacoustic signals. Researchers played recordings of buzzing sounds of snail-shell bees which are efficient pollinators of snapdragons and compared results with sounds produced by a non-pollinating wasp. They found that snapdragons increased the amount of nectar and sugar content in response to the snail shell bee recordings. These finding could have wider implications for farming because buzzing noises could be used as an environmentally friendly way of enhancing pollination of crops. Late flowering plants and shrubs are important in providing food for the insects. These include Buddleia, Sedum, Aster, Japanese anemone, Echinacea, Salvia, Verbena bonariensis and single flowered dahlias. Ivy flowers in late summer well after many supplies of pollen and nectar have dried up. Tree ivy in full flower can be abuzz with hundreds of bees having a great banquet. However, it does take five to ten years for ivy to mature and flower. A fine group of late summer perennials are the Penstenons (pictured left). They can be very showy with graceful spikes of tubular flowers, some with delicious- sounding names (Strawberries and Cream, Sweet Cherry, Ice Cream) reflected in their colours. Their trumpet-like tube is one colour with a contrasting throat. They prefer a well drained sunny site, but do not like to be crowded. Mentioning aptly named plants reminds me of the deep purple coloured ‘ cherry pie’ plant – Heliotropium arborescens; one sniff and you can almost smell the custard on the cherry pie. Another group of striking summer perennials are the Salvias, and these have an added value as they can help to prevent rose black spot if used as companion plants. The Salvia Gregii microphylla varieties, for instance ‘Hot Lips’, release scent as the sun warms up, and contains sulphur which has fungicidal properties. Their scent will waft in the wind and inhibit the fungal growth. Many sulphurous fungicides are available to buy, such as dusts, powders, sprays, etc., but if a beautiful plant will do the job it is worth a try and saves you some money. Many plants will now have ripened seeds which you can grow. Alchemilla and Hellebore are worth a try. The former – Lady’s Mantle – is a must as a filler in borders with its masses of loosely arranged delicate lime-green flowers. ON THE PLOT Our battle with the horsetail continues, but we have been thorough in our efforts and managed to remove a great quantity. We put it in the brown bin at home as it will not compost – far from it! A nice warm, dark, damp compost heap will certainly encourage fragments to root again. It is a remarkable plant belonging to a very old group of plants pre-dating the dinosaurs. It is related to ferns, thus producing spores and rhizomes. It is sometimes referred to as mare’s tail, confusing it with Hippuris – also called mare’s tail, which despite its similar appearance is a flowering plant and has seeds. Our broad beans are producing well and frequent picking encourages new pods to develop. One patch of our potatoes are in flower, so it is almost time to dig them up. That is one of the most satisfying jobs of the vegetable gardener. An added bonus appeared when earthing up the All About Plants, Gardens & Vegetable Patches Gardening - with Sarah King July/Aug 2025 Get Your Business Noticed

I have transplanted them, protecting them from the pigeons. Everyone is complaining about these birds this year as they seem to be going for crops which they never usually touch. It is time to earth up celery, but the most important job is watering. There seems to be no end to this dry, hot spell, so once again I am being cautious about what and how much I plant. One solution I have is to scatter Phacelia seed on every spare patch which, if it grows. will feed the bees, smother weeds, and I can turn it in later in the year. Winter radishes (Mooli) seem a good thing to try and can be sown now in July, but do not grow them in nutrient-rich soil or give excess water. If you do, they will put on too much soft growth and be vulnerable to winter weather. They are best protected from pests with a covering on Environmesh which lets the plants breathe. Horticultural fleece keeps plants warm and encourages soft growth. By harvesting the radishes from September to November you can have wonderful colourful additions to salads. Try the mild- flavoured tri-coloured varieties whose colours look like water melons, each slice having a fresh, bright green outer layer and a red centre. The Last Word FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife and Mum to two teenagers! COME ON SUMMER! Yay! The summer is finally here – and we’re having incredible sunshine at the moment. I never like to complain that it’s too hot but, oh my goodness, it was still 21 degrees at 12.30 last night. A cool shower this morning was in order! Longer days and warmer weather always make me so much more motivated. I’m looking forward to early dog walks on the beach and pizza oven nights in the garden and having some time off! Do stay safe in the sun, though. Remember your sun cream (factor 50+ for me!) and keep hydrated. And if you’re going off in the car anywhere, remember not to leave your dogs inside or if you do, leave the windows open!! TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF When was the last time you stopped to ask yourself if you’re spending your time in a way that actually makes you happy? It’s so easy to fill the days with work, chores and endless to-do lists, but burnout is real – and real growth often comes when we say no to the things that drain us and yes to the things that light us up. That might mean switching off your phone for an hour, making time for a hobby you’ve put off or finally booking that weekend away. The small decisions you make today shape the life you’ll thank yourself for later. It’s not selfish to put yourself first. If you don’t take time for yourself, you’ll be no good to anyone. It’s not about overhauling everything overnight, it’s about taking simple, intentional steps that make each day feel more like your own. And if something’s not working for you anymore, give yourself permission to change it. Enjoy! LAST TRIP TO DOWNTON I’m so excited. At the time of writing I’ve just seen the trailer for the new Downton Abbey film. I have absolutely loved all of the series and films and can’t wait for this next (and final) instalment. Dame Maggie Smith was my favourite so I’ll miss her brilliance, but I’m sure it will be fantastic. We have to wait until September to see it though! Something to look forward to after the holidays!
