Local News East Riding of Yorkshire Council is encouraging businesses to support their employee’s health and wellbeing. The council’s Working Well initiative is available to all businesses across the East Riding to support with information, training, resources and an activity plan tailored to individual businesses to help create a happy, healthy workforce. Simple positive changes can help increase resilience, improve engagement, reduce sickness and absence and encourage higher performance and productivity. Councillor David Tucker, cabinet member for adults, health and care said: “We would like businesses in the East Riding that haven’t yet created a wellbeing plan, to take the opportunity of the new year to create a plan for their organisation. “Our Working Well team will support businesses of all sizes, to help their employees mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing. Employers have a pivotal role to play in providing healthy and inclusive workplaces and businesses in turn will benefit from more engaged and motivated staff.” A key element of the Working Well scheme is for organisations to work together as part of a local network and share good practice. East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull City Council have today launched an eight-week consultation on the proposal to create a Hull and East Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA), led by a directly elected mayor. The leaders of both councils are urging all residents, businesses and other organisations to read the proposal and give their feedback. Councillor Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “It’s really important that people take part in this consultation and have their say. “This devolution deal will bring in hundreds of millions of pounds to this region - much more than just £400m. “Most importantly, it means we will no longer be left behind. Other regions all around us are reaping the benefits of devolution and we are missing out. “This deal gets us out there on the national and international stage. “But we need you, our residents, to get involved and come on this journey with us. “So, today I am asking everyone across the region to take part in this consultation, back the deal, and help shape the future of Hull and East Yorkshire.” Councillor Mike Ross, leader of Hull City Council, said: “This is an exciting milestone in our devolution journey and we urge everyone in the region to get involved and have their say. “Securing £400 million of game- changing investment will help to transform our region and move forward our city, whilst also giving us more local power to drive that ourselves. “Both councils are backing these proposals, but we are clear the residents in the area need to support them too. “Now is the time for the public to let us know what they think.” From now until 27 February, people can read the devolution proposal and give their feedback on each part of the deal at heydevolution.com. Residents can also visit any East Riding library, or any Hull library or customer service centre, where they can get help completing the survey using a computer or completing the questionnaire on paper. There will also be a series of drop-in events across the region, where people will be able find out more about the devolution proposal. Dates, locations and times for these will be announced at: l https://www.eastriding.gov.uk/ council/devolution/ l https://www.heydevolution.com/ l https://news.hull.gov.uk/tag/ devolution/ l and both councils’ social media accounts The Hull and East Yorkshire MCA would have powers to invest in areas such as transport, skills and housing, as well as an additional £400m of devolved funding over the next 30 years to invest in local priorities. A combined authority for East Yorkshire does not mean the two councils would merge, only that they would collaborate on certain issues that affect everyone in the region. The councils and the delivery of day- to-day responsibilities would remain separate, and local services would not be affected. House & Home Five types of mortgage loan you should know about as the base rate of interest is held at 5.25% again. Interest rates hold again: a guide to mortgage types for first-time buyers, movers and over 55s Five types of mortgage loan you should know about as the base rate of interest is held at 5.25% again The UK base rate of interest is still holding at 5.25 per cent, the Bank of England has announced, giving mortgage holders not on a fixed rate another reprieve. The Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee has voted to hold the rate again at it’s first meeting of 2024. It has now been held at 5.25 per cent for four months, following 14 consecutive rate hikes since 2021 in response to high inflation. Rates are still at the highest level since February 2008. Inflation rose to four per cent in December 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics, up from 3.9 per cent in November. Surges in mortgage rates over the past few months have been partly due to the economic turmoil sparked by the ‘mini-Budget’ policies announced in September 2022 by then-Prime Minister Liz Truss and former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng. Mortgage lenders have begun to price their offerings more competitively in 2024, with some offering interest on certain mortgage loans as low as four per cent — although brokers have advised buyers to fix as soon as possible rather than wait for rates to fall further. The recent interest rates hold will mean mortgage repayments for households could remain stable, news that will be particularly welcome to homeowners with variable and tracker rate mortgages. These mortgage rates move in line with the Bank of England’s interest rate and are thought to number around 150,000 in London. Mortgage holders with fixed rates of interest will remain Interest rates hold again: a guide to mortgage types for first-time buyers, movers and over 55’s protected for now, although the sting will eventually be felt when homeowners come off their lender’s fixed rate of interest, try to remortgage or move home. Amid the ongoing economic turbulence, it can be hard to know what type of mortgage will suit your needs. Here are five ways you can borrow to buy a home. Repayment mortgages Most homeowners have repayment mortgages, and repay some of the capital amount borrowed, as well as some of the interest on the loan each month. Eventually they own their home outright when the loan is paid off. There are two types of repayment mortgage: fixed-term and variable. With a fixed-rate mortgage, the interest rate is fixed for a set amount of time and won’t be affected by Bank of England base rate rises or fluctuations in the market. Typically, the fixed rate period (also known as the initial rate period) is the first two, three or five years of the term. As the name suggests, variable rate mortgages have interest rates that can go up and down, meaning monthly payments can change. There are three main types: standard variable rate (SVR), tracker and discount-rate. First-time buyer mortgages For many first-time buyers, meeting deposit requirements is the biggest hurdle to realising the dream of home ownership. This is where a 95 per cent mortgage can help, as with a home loan at 95 per cent loan-to- value (LTV), buyers need to raise a deposit of only five per cent. The LTV is a ratio of a home loan relative to a property’s value. For example, a mortgage worth £190,000 on a £200,000 home has a 95 per cent LTV. Buyers then make up the five per cent difference with a deposit — in this case, £10,000. During the uncertainty of the pandemic, banks became much more risk averse and many pulled their 95 per cent mortgage deals. But the product came back on the market after a government initiative was launched in 2021, providing a guarantee to mortgage lenders to encourage them to offer high loan-to-value (LTV) mortgages. Major lenders including Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Santander and Virgin Money offer 95 per cent mortgages under the Mortgage Guarantee Scheme. The closing date for the scheme has been extended to December 31 2023. Zero-deposit mortgages Renters who lack savings or financial support from their family can potentially make the jump on to the housing ladder with a new zero-deposit mortgage. Skipton Building Society’s new “track record” mortgage could give a helping hand to people with a strong history of paying their rent but who have been only able to save a little or nothing for a deposit to buy their first home. The deal is available for first-time buyers across Britain. Tenants aged 21 and over may be able to take out mortgages at between 95 per cent to 100 per cent of the value of the property they want to buy. Skipton says it will not allow borrowers to pay more for their mortgage than they were handing over in rent. Applicants will also need to demonstrate at least a 12-month track record of paying their rent on time. That should take care of concerns about affordability but does not eliminate the risk of negative equity. Interest-only mortgages Unlike the above repayment mortgages, interest-only mortgages require solely the interest to be paid for the term of the loan. They offer cheaper payments, but borrowers have to make sure they have a way of paying the full loan back at the end of the mortgage term. They are not as common as they were before the credit crunch and have been the subject of mis- selling scandals in the past. Since 2014, it has been more difficult to borrow on an interest- only basis. Not all lenders offer interest-only and those that do will have strict criteria such as a decent deposit and having an approved repayment vehicle in place. According to UK Finance, new interest-only lending, while still permitted, accounts for only a small minority of activity. Just 32,000 interest-only loans were advanced in 2021 — less than three per cent of total lending. ‘Part and part’ mortgages There is also a half way option between interest only and a traditional repayment mortgage. Called ‘part and part’ mortgages, these allow you to pay off some of your mortgage over time, but not all of it. When the mortgage term ends, there will still be some money left to pay off. Experts stress that specific financial advice should be sought to ensure that there is a full understanding of the part and part arrangement, and any later financial considerations have been taken into account. Lifetime or mortgages Available to homeowners aged 55 and over, a lifetime mortgage, sometimes called a ‘reverse mortgage’, is a loan secured against your home that allows you to release tax-free cash without needing to move out. It’s a type of equity release, freeing up wealth tied up in an asset but allowing you to carry on living in the property. Unlike conventional mortgages, where interest is charged on an amount that decreases with time, interest on lifetime mortgages is charged on an increasing sum, so your debt can grow quickly. This is because you don’t usually make any repayments, so the interest on the loan is therefore added to your debt on a continual basis. You can take the money as a lump sum or as a series of lump sums. No repayments are required until you die or move out of your home into long-term care. February 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

House & Home Continued on page 10 One of the things that Julie likes the most is the hand-painted harlequin flooring. Her husband, who’s a handyman, has made much of the furniture, including the dining table, several coffee tables, as well as shelving units and doors. He builds the item and then Julie paints and adds patination to make it look old. Everything is white and “distressed”, just the way she likes it. She finds inspiration in magazines and on Instagram. Her best piece of advice is to not be afraid of experimenting with new ideas, designs or techniques. For many years, people told Julie not to paint their tile flooring because she would regret that! But in the end, she decided to follow her intuition and paint the floor. Now, many years later, she still loves that floor. Another good piece of advice is to use artificial flowers in the interior design. Julie loves artificial flowers and she prefers to use bundles of one and the same flower, adding elegance to the room. Oh, and don’t even mention paint! Julie loves to use paint for all kinds of things. She paints everything from books, flowers and vases to furniture and walls. Even her kitchen cupboards have been painted her favourite colour which is white. If she’s got to choose her favourite piece of furniture, it’s got to be the shutters which her husband made out of recycled pallets. They hide the television!! A love of WHITE VINTAGE Seventeen years ago, Julie and her husband bought a house in Beverley but Julie has only been interested in vintage and shades of white for the past few years. She fell in love with the view of the Minster. She knew that everything inside the house had to be renovated to make this into a personal home. February 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

House & Home Julie’s interest in interior design started during her childhood in York where Julie lived in a Victorian home along with her parents. Her mother also had an interior design business where Julie helped out by making flower arrangements and ceramics. Julie’s love for flowers is definitely from that part of her life. Julie is a full-time mother of three children and she also spends a lot of time visiting vintage fairs and car-boot sales looking for old and unloved bits of furniture and bric-a- brac to upcycle. She’s developed a passion for showing others that you don’t have to buy expensive things to create a cosy and beautiful home. She furnishes her own home with nothing but recycled furniture which she paints and renovates. Continued on Page 12 February 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

Literature mistakes in her past, unleashing truths that will shake her family to its core. Inspired by her passion for the Orkney islands and its people, The Island Swimmer is a delightful debut novel about the importance of honesty and community from much-loved broadcaster Lorraine Kelly. The Memory Library by Kate Storey A gorgeous novel that pairs my (and many people’s) perennial love for books about books with themes of family – and just how complex they can be. Sally Harrison gifts her daughter a book each birthday, a tradition that has been going on for over forty years. The issue is, for the past 22 years the books have gathered dust on a shelf, as Sally’s daughter Ella fled to Australia after a diffi cult family split. Sally doubts the books or the notes inside the front covers – dedicated to her much loved and missed daughter – will ever be read. Then Ella is forced to return to the UK. Is this a chance to discover that when one chapter ends, another follows? Anna O by Matthew Blake This thriller doesn’t look at whodunnit or even why they did it, so much as are they responsible for doing it? The question posed is, if you kill someone while sleepwalking, are you guilty? This is a legal quagmire and much depends upon the circumstances around the crime. But Anna O’s case is made yet more complex as she suffers from a mystery (although real) illness called “resignation syndrome”, where patients fall into a deep sleep and never wake up, often after a traumatic event, possibly one they perpetrated. This thriller has been sold in over 30 territories and with this fresh and compelling plot, combined with fascinating, well-drawn characters, it is set to be a hit. Leaving by Roxana Robinson Sarah and Warren were one another’s first loves. They had plans for a wonderful future, but youthful insecurity leads to An Ideal Husband by Erica James Erica James is known for her uplifting, wryly humorous family dramas. After 30 years of marriage, and a wonderful family Christmas, Louisa is stunned when husband Kip asks for a divorce on Boxing Day. She can’t comprehend it; he’d never seemed unhappy and they’ve raised three children together. She thought they were bobbing along like people tend to at their age. However, it transpires that Kip has been secretly seeing a younger woman. Insult to injury, it’s the woman who broke their youngest son’s heart. Now Kip wants to embark on a new life with Zoe, Louisa is left to pick up the pieces. Yet, despite the betrayal and anger, when Louisa finds a unique and welcoming new home, she experiences a glimmer of hope that life might eventually meander on to a happier path. It’s with great satisfaction that the reader watches Louisa make exciting new plans for her future while Kip finds himself facing unexpected challenges of his own. He begins to learn that living with a younger woman, after dismantling his family, might not be the dream people assume. We all know someone who will benefit from reading this sparkling tale of new starts and second chances. The Island Swimmer by Lorraine Kelly When Evie’s father falls desperately ill, she must return to the family home on Orkney. She left when she was a teenager, swearing she’d never return to the remote, wild landscape. Her estranged sister Liv isn’t pleased to see her, as their relationship broke after a childhood trauma. Lonely Evie joins a group of cold-water swimmers. Plunging into the cold sea, she finds calmness and spirit. With the groups support Evie faces up to the misunderstanding; they part ways and marry other people. When they meet again at 60, the attraction is both instant and profound. They quickly realise they were always meant for one another and have wasted years. However, their lives are deeply entrenched on diff erent paths now. Sarah is divorced and lives outside New York; Warren is still married and lives in Boston. They both have adult children. Can their separate histories be dismantled for the chance of a future together? Examining responsibility and love, this is a beautifully written, honest account of the reality of experiencing deep passion late in life. Maude Horton’s Glorious Revenge by Lizzie Pook This novel drops the reader right in the epicentre of Victorian London. A time of contrasts, exploration and exploitation, advancement and peril rub shoulders. Constance Horton has disappeared. Maude, her devoted older sister, knows that Constance abandoned the apothecary they call home and, disguised as a boy, boarded a ship bound for the Arctic. She never returned. Maude doesn’t believe it was “a tragic accident”, as the Admiralty claim. Why would she do such a dangerous, disruptive thing in the fi rst place? Constance’s journal makes it clear that there are sinister forces at work. To find justice, Maude must step into London’s dark underbelly, and into the path of dangerous, powerful men who want to thwart her. Thrilling and atmospheric. Sugar, Baby by Celine Saintclare Celine Saintclare’s debut novel, Sugar, Baby, depicts the glittering world of the young women who make a living by showing up at clubs and restaurants to burnish such establishments with their youth and beauty. Are these women being taken advantage of—or on the ride of their lives? To its credit, this personable novel, which charts the somewhat inadvertent trajectory of a girl embedded among a more knowing group, doesn’t come down on either side. Instead, it shows the grit alongside the glamour, and crafts a very believable story that feels like a document of the moment, when image is a valuable and fleeting currency. Come and Get It by Kiley Reid Another study of class and money arrives in Kiley Reid’s Come and Get It. Set on a college campus, it depicts a motley cohort of students, professors, and administrators, showing that campuses are not just centers of academic inquiry and nighttime misadventures, but intersections for people of vastly different resources. Here, as in her first novel, Such a Fun Age, which probes a sticky relationship between a nanny and a mother, Reid masterfully captures the quiet misalignments that stem from a varying sense of what’s at stake. Ilium by Lea Carpenter Carpenter’s novel Ilium about a clandestine operation to take out a Russian asset on the French peninsula of Cap Ferret, has the surface tension of an espionage thriller, but it’s really a psychological study of a young British woman who is swept into a world of intelligence and finds herself undone by it. Reminiscent of the spare, strobe-lit storytelling of late Joan Didion, Carpenter’s novel shows how wealth and sophistication paper over moral rot, and how human attachment is a vulnerability when only posing and posturing keep you alive. Health & Beauty Rebekah’s Beauty Box How To Winterproof Your Hair Low temperatures, high winds and persistent drizzle can all spell disaster for our hair. Here’s the kit you need to survive winter and see your strands through to spring… Wash Carefully If your hair is suffering, it pays to be prescriptive with your wash routine. Instead of reaching for whatever is to hand in the shower, think about what your hair really needs and act accordingly. If the recent cold snap has made your hair dry and your scalp itchy or sensitised, look for something that’s as calming as it is cossetting. Straand is a new brand with an inclusive attitude to haircare, meaning it’s suitable for all hair types. To relieve some of the irritation, opt for the Crown Cleanse, a prebiotic shampoo designed to tackle dandruff and cleanse the scalp properly without stripping it of those all-important oils. Its Crown Boost Conditioning Treatment is hardworking without being heavy, leaving hair shiny and your scalp feeling balanced and comfortable. If the cold, drying weather has wreaked havoc with your ends, but your scalp remains prone to oiliness, L’Oréal Elvive’s latest launch might be just what you need. With targeted ingredients to address greasy roots as well as frizzy, thirsty ends, the Hydra Pure Shampoo and Conditioner duo contains both salicylic acid and hyaluronic acid to create a beautifully balanced head of hair. Fight The Frizz Although we tend to think of frizz as more of a problem in hot, humid climates, freezing temperatures can mess with the delicate moisture balance in the hair cuticle. To negate any kind of frizz, whatever the forecast, it’s essential to keep hair sufficiently moisturised with a hydrating regime that starts in the shower and ends with a good styling routine. One of the best stylers is Color Wow’s Dream Coat Supernatural Spray Anti-Frizz Treatment, which acts like a raincoat for your strands by creating a water-repelling seal over the top. Although it’s activated by heat, it’s worth the effort as it keeps frizz at bay for up to four washes. If you want a longer-term solution, Olaplex’s No.6 Bond Smoother works on strengthening the hair’s molecular structure so that hair is less susceptible to begin with. Dial Down Dullness If your hair is looking as dull and lifeless as the grey winter skies, a glossing treatment will help revive its lustre. Although diet, UV damage, heated tools and colour are all contributory factors, our hair often looks more lacklustre during the winter months as there’s less light to bounce off its surface. Thankfully, at-home hair glosses are becoming more accessible and an excellent one is the newly launched Hair Gloss from Ouai, which utilises the properties of hyaluronic acid and rice water to add instant and long-term shine to hair. Additionally, it boosts colour vibrancy, protects against fading and adds heat protection. Beat The Breakage During the winter, the lack of vitamin D from the sun can manifest as dry, brittle hair that’s prone to breakage. If that’s you, fortify your hair with something that works from the inside out. John Frieda’s latest technology is a breakthrough for brittle strands and helps build resilience so that split ends are reduced by up to 99% and hair is less likely to snap. The Strengthening Super Fluid is the latest addition to the PROfiller+ range and is packed with skincare- inspired ingredients like biotin and hyaluronic acid. To address the vitamin D issue, it’s important to supplement your intake during the period when the sun is lacking, i.e. between October and April. Bare Biology’s Vitamin D3+Vitamin K2 spray is easy to take and convenient, and offers the added benefits of bone-strengthening K2. In fact, it is the sixth most common cancer and accounts for four per cent of all new cancer cases in women in the UK. Experts are predicting that we could see a significant increase to 9,400 new cases by 2040. The symptoms of this cancer can sometimes be vague in the early stages and are often mistaken for the much more common condition of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which means that the diagnosis is often made at a later stage. Like all cancers, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the outlook, and as next month (March) is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, We thought this would be a good opportunity to discuss the symptoms to look out for. And if, after reading this, you have some of those unexplained symptoms or think you are at high risk, please do speak to your GP. Early diagnosis is vital. ‘More than 90 per cent of women diagnosed early will survive ovarian cancer, compared to just 1 in 3 diagnosed in the advanced stages’ Symptoms of Ovarian cancer? There are six main symptoms to look out for: l Persistent abdominal bloating. The word “persistent” is important here. All of us will have experienced transient bloating at some point, perhaps after a period of over indulgence, but bloating that doesn’t improve should always be looked at. l Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain. l Unexplained change in bowel habits. l Feeling full very easily. l Feeling nauseous. l Needing to wee more often. This can be caused by enlarged ovaries putting pressure on the bladder. l Other symptoms may include back pain, unexplained weight loss, fatigue and pain during intercourse. In my experience, a new lump will usually get people to the doctor fairly promptly, but these more vague symptoms may well be tolerated for longer. Continued on page 20 We all want to know how to live not only longer but better. This month we highlight one of the most common cancers for women, and what symptoms you should look out for. If this is you, ask your GP to refer you for genetic testing. Around one in five cases of ovarian cancer are linked to an inherited gene mutation. l AGE While ovarian cancer can occur in any woman with ovaries, more than 80 per cent of cases occur in women over the age of 50. l OVULATION AND FERTILITY Every time an egg is released from an ovary during ovulation, there is some damage to the surface of the ovary, and it is thought that there is an increased chance of changes to the cells during the repair process. So, anything that reduces the number of times you ovulate, such as being on the combined contraceptive pill, having multiple pregnancies or breast feeding, reduces your risk of developing ovarian cancer. l BEING OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE Fat tissue produces excess amounts of oestrogen, which can be associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer. l ASBESTOS AND RADIATION EXPOSURE. These can both contribute to ovarian cancer risk. l SMOKING There are several different types of ovarian cancer. Smoking, however, seems to be associated with an increased risk of mucinous ovarian cancer, which accounts for 2-3 per cent of all ovarian cancers. l DIABETES Ovarian cancer affects around two per cent (two in 100) of the general population, but it affects 2.4 per cent of those living with diabetes. l HRT Using this is a low risk. To put it into perspective, if we followed 1,000 women taking HRT for five years, there would be just one additional cases of ovarian cancer compared to 1,000 women not using HRT. Food & Drink Chirria Kilbride, senior cardiac nurse at the John Radcliffe Hospital, shares ways to lower or maintain your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing your risk of heart problems. 1 SAY “NO” TO A SECOND GLASS OF WINE Experts recommend you drink less than 14 units per week. Indulging in too much alcohol can increase blood pressure and weight, increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke. Try cutting back by drinking half pints or single shot drinks rather than pints or double shots. Switch to alcohol-free versions or swap pub nights with friends for different activities. 2 EAT FOR HEALTH Having a healthy, balanced diet is important for heart health at every age but during peri- and menopause, cholesterol and blood pressure may increase and weight gain is also common. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, nuts, seeds and pulses, while cutting back on foods high in saturated fat, sugar and refined salt will lower your risk of coronary heart disease. 3 KEEP MOVING Increasing your activity levels improves heart health by improving circulatory blood flow and lowering blood pressure, plus it helps you maintain a healthy weight and reduces feelings of anxiety and stress, which may harm your heart. Exercising can seem overwhelming if you have a heart condition or limited mobility, so start small and build up – find some examples at bhf.org.uk. Always check with your doctor if you’re new to exercise and have a heart condition. 4 DON’T SMOKE Chemicals in cigarettes make the walls of your arteries sticky. This causes fattymaterial to stick to the walls and clog your arteries, reducing space for blood to flow properly, which can lead to a heart attack. Try nicotine replacements, such as patches, gums or lozenges. Distract yourself from cravings by doing things you enjoy. Call the Smokefree Helpline on 0300 123 1044 for free support. 5 MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT Carrying excess weight around your middle makes it harder for your body to use the hormone insulin, which controls blood glucose (sugar) levels and can lead to type 2 diabetes. High levels of glucose in your bloodstream damages your arteries and increases your risk of heart and circulatory diseases. Help maintain a healthy weight by: l Walking or cycling short journeys instead of driving. l Taking the stairs instead of an escalator or lift. l Getting off the bus a stop earlier. l Including higher fibre foods and protein in your meals, such as lentils, fish, beans and chicken. l Swapping crisps, biscuits and sweets for whole fruits, vegetables, unsalted nuts and seeds. News stories have reported that olive oil can reduce the risk of fatal heart disease and other diseases. We look behind the headlines and give you our verdict. New research suggests that olive oil could reduce your risk of death, including from heart disease, stroke, cancer and dementia. Although the link between olive oil and reduced risk of heart disease is well known, the researchers wanted to find out if it is linked to a reduced risk of death overall. The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, analysed the diet of around 90,000 men and women over a 28-year period. None of them had heart or circulatory disease or cancer at the outset. Every four years they were asked how often they ate specific foods. Researchers found those who consumed the most olive oil (more than half a tablespoon a day) were less likely to die from any cause, including heart disease or stroke, cancer, lung disease and neurodegenerative disease (such as Alzheimer’s disease or vascular dementia). After adjusting for other factors, the people who ate the most olive oil had a 19 per cent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular causes such as heart disease or stroke, compared with the people who ate the least olive oil. The biggest effect was seen in neurodegenerative disease deaths (29 per cent lower risk in people who ate most olive oil). For respiratory disease the risk was 18 per cent lower and for cancer it was 17 per cent lower. The study also found substituting 10 grams a day (just over a tablespoon) of fats such as margarine, butter, mayonnaise and dairy fat with the equivalent amount of olive oil was also associated with a lower risk of death. Although this kind of study can’t prove cause and effect, the researchers said there are potential reasons why olive oil might reduce death risk from such a range of diseases. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fat and specific plant compounds, which may have a positive effect on blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as having anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties, and encouraging healthy gut bacteria. The study’s lead author said: “Our findings support current dietary recommendations to increase the intake of olive oil and other unsaturated vegetable oils.” How good was the research? A major advantage of the study was the large number of people taking part over a long period of time. They were all nurses and other health professionals in the United States, so their lifestyles might not be representative of the population as a whole. How good was the news coverage? The Times carried two articles about the research, a news story and a feature which included an interview with the study author. Both were relatively accurate, but didn’t explain that the researchers had adjusted the findings to take other factors into account that could influence the results. This means the differences seen are more likely to be related to olive oil (and not, for example, that the olive oil eaters also ate more salads) although with observational studies like this, we can never be certain. The Verdict We know from previous studies olive oil may have a range of health benefits, and this study supports existing recommendations for heart and circulatory health. Replacing saturated fats in your diet (like butter, lard, and ghee) with unsaturated fats like olive, sunflower or vegetable oil can help to lower cholesterol levels. Olive oil is also a well-known part of the Mediterranean diet, which is a dietary pattern associated with better heart and circulatory health. This study is helpful to broaden our understanding of how olive oil may reduce the risk of death from other conditions, not just heart disease. However more evidence is required to say there is a direct link between the consumption of olive oil and lowered risk of dying. The study doesn’t tell us whether olive oil is healthier than other plant oils like sunflower or rapeseed. As part of a healthy, balanced diet, switching from butter, ghee or lard to unsaturated fats like olive oil is an easy change whether you use it in salad dressings, to drizzle it on bread instead of using butter, or for frying and roasting. 5 ways to help your heart Does eating olive oil mean you’ll live longer? Food & Drink Ingredients: Yeast dough: 2.1 cups milk 1.8 oz (50g) fresh yeast 0.4 cup (100ml) sugar 1 tbsp vanilla sugar 1 tbsp cardamon 2 eggs 6 cups (1400ml) wheat flour 5.2 oz (150g) soft butter Cinnamon filling: 5.2 oz (150g) soft butter 4 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp cinnamon Almond filling: 7 oz (200g) almonds 0.8 cup (200ml) confectioner’s sugar 2 egg whites 2 tbsp water Cream filling: 2.6 cups (600ml) heavy cream 2 tbsp confectioner’s sugar 1 tbsp vanilla sugar Garnish: confectioner’s sugar Method: The yeast dough: Heat up the milk until it’s lukewarm. Dissolve the fresh yeast in the milk and add sugar, vanilla sugar and cardamon. Add whisked eggs and half of the flour. Mix everything in a food processor for a couple of minutes, then add the rest. Add soft butter little by little. The dough has to be smooth. Mix it in the food processor for 10 minutes, then allow it to rise for 1 hour. Roll out the dough to make a big rectangle (approx. 11.8 x 15.7 inches/30 x 40 cm). Prepare the cinnamon filling by mixing soft butter, sugar and cinnamon, and spread the cream onto the dough. Roll up the dough from the long side, cut the roll into slices and make the buns. Let the buns rise again for 30 minutes. Bake them in the oven at 437°F (225°C) for approx. 10 minutes until they turn golden. Almond filling: Grind the almonds and mix them with confectioner’s sugar, egg whites and water to create a thick, tough paste. Cream filling: Beat the heavy cream along with confectioner’s sugar and vanilla sugar to create a thick cream. Before serving, cut the cinnamon buns in half. Spread almond filling onto the bottom half. Using an icing bag creates the nicest result. Distribute a thick layer of the cream filling on top of the almond filling – preferably using an icing bag – and arrange your buns on a serving dish. Sprinkle confectioner’s sugar onto the buns using a sieve. Cinnamon Buns Chef Erkan Sahindal, owner of Olive Tree, Beverley says these Cinnamon buns disappear very quickly whenever I make them at home. The Zucchini is a family recipe that I was taught as a boy. Prep Time: Start to finish 25 minutes Makes: 4 servings Ingredients: 500g dried wholemeal linguine 2 medium zucchini and/or yellow squash, cut lengthwise into thin ribbons* 2 to 3 Tbsp olive oil 1 lemon 3 cups rocket 1/4 cup sliced Premium Greek Golden Peppers 11/2 tsp chopped fresh oregano, tarragon, or flat-leaf parsley 1 to 2 cloves garlic, minced Salt and black pepper (optional) Chopped toasted almonds or dry-roasted pistachio nuts Method: STEP 1 Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. In a large bowl combine hot pasta, zucchini, and oil; toss to coat. Cool 10 minutes. STEP 2 Meanwhile, remove 1 tsp zest and squeeze 1 to 2 Tbsp juice from lemon. Add lemon zest and juice, rocket, golden peppers, oregano, and garlic to pasta mixture; toss to combine. If desired, season to taste with salt and black pepper. Top with almonds. Cook’s Tip Use a vegetable peeler to cut zucchini into long, thin ribbons. Start peeling from one end of the zucchini to the other, keeping fingers out of the way. Or cut zucchini into noodles with a vegetable spiraliser, julienne cutter, or mandoline. Zucchini Ribbons, Pasta, and Rocket Salad February 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

Kenya was one of the first areas of Africa to offer affordable travel when charter flights started to fly in during the 90’s offering an exciting combination of safari adventures and relaxing beach stays. Safaris in South Africa are now very affordable with the expansion and lower costs of scheduled flights, game reserves in national parks are attracting nature lovers with great value packages. A week-long South African safari, inclusive of meals, drinks, and game drives in a National Park lodge, can be enjoyed for under £3000 per person, challenging preconceived notions of safari costs. Reflecting on the changing landscape of travel, I remember when flights to Australia in the 80’s were cheap at £1600 return. The world has since become a smaller and more accessible place. Travel has become cheaper, travel options continue to expand, the allure of exploring new horizons remains a timeless passion for adventurers worldwide. Local People, Local Lives. Specialist Music Shows Every Thursday on BeverleyFM 7pm Rock ‘n’ Roll with David Harper 8pm Songwriters with Martin Pierson 9pm Reggae & Ska with DJ Big Boy 10pm Themeology with Cliff Baillie “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain” - Bob Marley Just ask Alexa to tune in Just over a year ago, I made the difficult decision to take my daughter out of school and pursue home education. She had just started secondary school and was deeply unhappy. My once happy and outgoing child had become withdrawn and depressed, with her hood up and eyes on the floor. It was so painful to see, and I knew things needed to change. Change is always challenging, especially when making such a significant decision. Suddenly, everyone around me became an expert on what was best for my child, offering their opinions and advice. But I knew in my heart that home education was the best route for her. After doing some research, I found a group of home educators in my local area who offered invaluable advice on legalities, deregistering from the school system, educational events and activities, kindness and support. A year on from that decision, my daughter is thriving. She is happy, growing in confidence, and gaining knowledge every day. She has an active social life and is no longer withdrawn and sad. It’s fantastic to see the transformation in her. I never realised just how many people educate their children at home. In the UK, it is estimated that between 125,000 to 180,000 children are “unschooled,” and this figure is rising. It’s a growing movement, and I’m proud to be a part of it. The decision to choose home education is a personal one. It’s important to consider each child as an individual. While school wasn’t right for my child, it might be perfect for others. However, I’m always happy to offer advice to those considering the home education route. I often get asked how I teach my child, and my answer is simple - there are many ways to teach your child at home! My daughter and I love exploring the internet, and we’ve found some fantastic resources like Seterra, Education Classes, BBC Teach, ED Place, and Twinkl. Twinkl is particularly great because you can download curriculums with clickable links to relevant lessons. The lessons are often structured as PowerPoint presentations with supporting print outs. It’s been a tremendous help to us. We’re also fortunate enough to be able to go on many educational trips. Some of our favourites from this past year include the Van Gogh Immersive Experience in York, Bempton Cliffs, the Museums in York, and the Buddhist Centre in Pocklington. There’s a large community of home educators in our area who offer advice, plan daily activities and trips, so despite being home schooled, my child still has plenty of opportunities to socialise. Making the decision to home educate is a big deal, so if it is something you are considering, take some time, do some research, ask questions, talk to your child and follow your heart! Motoring - In association with Lairgate Motors Toyota to top and tail expanding EV line-up Japanese firm’s EV range is set to gain a luxury fastback flagship and an urban SUV... Toyota will launch five new electric cars in Europe within the next two years, including a small urban SUV and a range-topping luxury fastback. The new models will join a mid-size SUV-coupé based on last year’s Compact Crossover concept and will arrive as the firm accelerates the expansion of its electric car line-up in the run-up to 2026, when it will begin launching an all-new family of EVs. These new-era EVs will sit atop the modular architecture it revealed in October and feature nextgeneration batteries that dramatically boost range and efficiency. Beyond the Compact Crossover revealed last year and these two new cars, details remain undisclosed of the two other EVs Toyota will launch by 2026. However, the suggestion is that they will be SUVs in the vein of the RAV4 and sevenseat Highlander respectively. Urban EV (left) will arrive in 2024 and fastback EV in 2025 Notably, alongside the reveal of the Sport Crossover luxury fastback earlier this year in China, Toyota also showed the Flexspace concept, a family-focused SUV that aims to provide a “cosy home” environment, together with a “reliable” cruising range and a raft of advanced safety functions. It is possible that a production version of this car could follow its sleeker sibling into Europe by 2026. URBAN SUV Toyota product development boss Andrea Carlucci said this boldly styled B-segment SUV concept “gives a strong indication of what will be a strong contributor” to Toyota’s European EV sales over the coming years. The brand will reveal full specifications in the first half of 2024, when it takes the wraps off the production version, which remains unnamed. The model bears a striking resemblance to the recently revealed eVX concept from Suzuki, with which Toyota has a strategic partnership and collaborates on certain models. However, brand bosses would not be drawn on the extent of the relationship between the two cars. Notably, Suzuki sells its own versions of the RAV4 and Corolla already as part of a partnership in which the two firms collaborate on electrified vehicle development. The new Toyota is understood to be based on a dedicated architecture related to the e-TNGA platform, which underpins the bZ4X electric SUV. Measuring 4300mm bumper to bumper, it will be positioned as an electric alternative to the Yaris Cross hybrid – and in this role it will be the smallest EV in the Toyota line-up, “at least for a while”. By 2026, Toyota will have 15 EVs on sale in Europe and expects them to account for more than 20% of its total sales in the region. The new urban EV will not be priced to match the Yaris Cross, though. Carlucci indicated that “there is a premium” attached to electric cars, which makes a circa-£25,000 starting price unfeasible in the medium term because there needs to be a “substantial shift” in the cost of battery materials to bring the showroom price down. However, he acknowledged that the Volvo EX30, for example, would be a natural rival and that “Toyota is not detached from the market reality”, suggesting a starting price of around £32,000. In pursuit of a balance between affordability and usability, it will be offered with a choice of two battery options, the largest of which is expected to provide a range of around 250 miles, in line with the car’s city-slicker billing. It will also be available with front and all-wheel-drive powertrains, the latter of which, said Carlucci, will be a rare proposition “at the lower end of the market”, although no specification details of its specification have been given. Carlucci highlighted that the urban SUV segment is now the most popular in Europe. “We have been super-successful with Yaris Cross,” he added, “and we don’t intend to leave any space to the competition.” LUXURY FASTBACK The sleek, low-slung Sport Crossover concept was revealed at the Shanghai motor show last year but has now been confirmed to evolve into a production car for the European market in 2025. It does not directly replace any current Toyota model. Instead, it February 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

Carlucci described it as the “perfect style hero” of the firm’s EV line-up, highlighting that it is longer, wider and lower than the bZ4X but makes minimal concession in terms of practicality and comfort. He revealed that the concept is 4.9m long, but that the precise dimensions will change for the production version. “I would say it looks at a different customer,” he said. “We believe that the market is not just SUVs. Of course, it is the latest trend and one that will stay a while, but we want to offer solutions for any kind of customer. This could be the solution for the customer that is specifically looking for something which is stylish. “We want to deliver something which is closer to the new cues of Toyota – being a bit obsessed with sportiness, especially at the back with the coupé, or fastback, design.” The Sport Crossover has been developed in tandem with Toyota’s Chinese-market joint-venture partner, BYD, which is also likely to supply its batteries, as it does for the bZ3 saloon, but Toyota would not confirm that European cars will come from China. Further technical details are likely to be revealed in around a year’s time, when Toyota reveals the final showroom bound car and gives it a name. Toyota-bz compact suv concept Toyota BZ4X dashboard

Christmas is well and truly over now and I hope that you had a good one, and were able to enjoy the cheerfulness of indoor plants such as azaleas, paper-white narcissi, hyacinths, cyclamen, amaryllis and poinsettias (not my favourite!). So, what did you do with your Christmas tree? Plant it back in the garden, put it in the dustbin or recycled it somehow? For years I have put my tree in a dark corner of the garden and forgotten about it until the needles are shed, then I would cut off the branches which are useful on the plot for supporting peas, and the thick stem can act as a support for something larger. In some places the discarded trees are put to good use for animals to enjoy: there was a picture in the newspaper of an elephant in Berlin zoo holding a Christmas tree with its trunk. The trees are collected and fed to the elephants and other animals to chomp on and play with! IN THE GARDEN So now we can get going on some gardening, although the weather will dictate what we do. After the cold snap in December and then so much rain, our gardens and allotments have had a tough time. In the garden I look every day for signs of snowdrops pushing through the cold earth with their buds the shape of spears, in their papery protected sheath about to break open with their beautiful dangling flowers. Snowdrops have been around for a long time and were described by Theophrastus in the 4th century BCE, and later a drawing of Galanthus nivalis was included in John Gerrard’s Herbal (1597). Johann Strauss II named one of his waltzes ‘The Snowdrop’. Hans Christian Anderson wrote a short story ‘The Snowdrop’. The name Galanthus is derived from the Greek gala (milk) and anthos (flower). It is sometimes called the Candlemas Bell or Fair Maids of February or White Ladies. Snowdrops are not native to the UK, but grow wild in woods in Europe and west Asia. The wild species including G.elwesii, G.nivalis, G.plicatus are the commonest ancestors of almost all snowdrops. It is a flower that has captured the imagination for many years and interest in the tiny variations of petal size and shape along with the green markings reallytook hold in the late 19th century. Galanthophiles would meet and show off the new varieties which they had raised at snowdrop parties. A bulb called Golden Fleece fetched an astonishing £1,390 at auction in 2015! The differences between the cultivars have inspired some curious names including ‘Curse of the Were Rabbit’, ‘Crême Anglais’, ‘Green Zebra’ and ‘Shrek’. Another early spring delight is the aconite which appears with a bent stem pushing up towards the light, and then it uncurls to display a glorious burst of yellow. An excellent display of aconites and snowdrops can be seen in the garden at the front of the Sessions House in North Bar Without, Beverley. My grandparents had two huge clumps of Iris unguicularis (stylosa) and I would love to hunt through the dense strappy leaves to find the buds which, when opened, are a work of art. I hope to have a picture of one in my garden for my next article. Iris reticulata will be coming out soon and many varieties are available in pots, ready to come into flower and easy to pop into a container. Their colour range is wide from the very pale blue Katherine Hodgkin to bright blue Harmony to deep purple J.S.Diijt. Closely related is the stunning yellow Iris danfordii. I have been looking at the hellebores which are beginning to flower. Actually, H.nigra (Christmas rose) has been out since December and in early January I saw a large bee feasting on the nectar. On such a cold day I thought that it had better make a hasty retreat to its bed after its succulent meal. The larger hellebores, H.corsica and H.foetidus have wonderfully sculpted leaves and lime green flowers which are striking in the drab winter palate. Breeders have developed an amazing range of H.orientalis, some with double flowers, marbled leaves, solid colours, bicolours and spotted. The structure of the flower is such that the outer sepals look like petals and the petals have developed into tube like structures containing nectar. Violets and primroses will not be far behind the snowdrops and crocuses, and certain trees in the garden and the wild are harbingers of spring and warmer weather. Garrya elliptica ‘James Roof’ is a dull shrub most of the year but comes into its own now. There are separate male and female plants, both of which have catkins/tassels, but the male one is spectacular with its long, grey tassels dangling down like a waterfall. Trained against a wall gives the best effect. Catkins on other trees, e.g. hazel, birth and alder, are coming out now. Hazel is particularly striking in the hedgerows giving colourful interest with its heavily pollen-laden catkins wafting clouds of yellow dust into the air hoping to land on an inconspicuous female flower. Many of us have camellias in the garden about to burst into flower. All mine are in pots as they need ericacious soil. I have two which are 53 years old and were given to me as very small plants by my grandmother the year I was married. Camellias give magnificent displays but must be placed so they do not get early morning sun. If you fail to water them in the summer when the buds were forming you could lose the blooms to bud- drop. My winter-flowering cherry flowers before its leaves develop and is a touch of magic with its delicate pink flowers. Plants such as Buddleia and elder which have probably given good displays last summer need to be cut right back to encourage new growth. After flowering you can prune Mahonia but be careful to maintain a good shape to the shrub. Heathers and winter jasmine can also be tidied up while Pansies and cyclamen need frequent dead-heading to encourage continual flowering. If you leave the hellebore flowers they will continue to give interest as they mature and shed their leaves. ON THE PLOT I tried to dig the beds on my plot earlier, but so much rain has made it a real struggle so I will leave it a while until things dry out a little. Some people have covered their plots with fabric or cardboard to retain some warmth and suppress the weeds. If you didn’t manage to sow broad beans in the autumn you may like to try the red-flowered variety, the Italian Grano Violetta for a change. Planning your plot is always important and on a dull, cold day I like to get the planner out and choose my varieties and decide where to put them; but then in April I’ll go to the market and find ready grown plants I cannot resist that I had not planned, throw them in, and the plan goes to pot. However, I do stick rigidly to rotating potatoes, beans and brassicas. Sweet peas can be sown now and kept indoors. Pinch out the top when the plant gets about three inches tall to encourage its side shoots so as to develop a strong plant. They will very happily harden off in a cold frame and when the weather warms up can be planted out in their final position with plenty of mulch and manure and good support. As I dig up the last of my parsnips I find that I am about to sow the next crop. Spring onion and radish seeds are good mixed in with the parsnip seeds as they germinate earlier and show you where you put the parsnips. I do find that the slugs home in on the early radishes! It is always tempting and a good idea to start sowing seeds indoors or in the greenhouse to go out later, but they are susceptible to damping off. This is caused by fungi and bacteria attacking the tender seedlings at soil level so they rot. Good ventilation, scrupulously clean pots and fresh potting compost are essential. Why not take a good bracing walk sometime soon to see snowdrops in all their glory. Burton Agnes (YO25 4NB) Snowdrop Walk is open from 4th to 26th February. Devonshire Mill, Canal Lane, Pocklington (YO42 1NN) will be open on 26th February, but you will have to book. The walled garden at Beningborough Hall near York (YO30 1DD) has a magnificent display of snowdrops closely followed by daffodils. Perhaps a snowdrop walk will turn you into Galanthophiles! It can also be because of the increased number of people with SUVs – their lights shine right at your face if your car sits lower on the road. It’s good for the soul – and I think we all need that at the moment! Fiona x Twitter: @fionadwyer • Facebook: Fiona Dwyer PR February 2024 Get Your Business Noticed
