Technology News For more insights follow @helloucreative @hellougill_artist | @reelcreative_uk www.helloucreative.co.uk | www.reelcreative.org Helen’s World of Creativity By Helen Gill - HelloU Creative ARTS & CULTURE TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION COMMUNITY Curiosity, Creativity and Enterprise - The £5 Blossom Challenge In Hull, young people are exploring how creativity, teamwork, and practical skills can turn their ideas into a business and generate profit for a purpose. The £5 Blossom Challenge gives schools and pupils the opportunity to receive investment from local business partners and see what they can achieve. Could you start a business with £150? Where would you start? What would you create? More people than ever are exploring the idea of starting something of their own, whether that’s a side project, a creative idea, or something that grows into something bigger over time. Often, it starts with curiosity: what if I tried this? To turn ideas into action, we need a range of skills: confidence, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, leadership, and resilience. In the UK, these are often referred to as the Big 13 Enterprise Skills, used by Young Enterprise UK and Making Changes For Careers. They help people of all ages take ideas forward, work with others, and adapt when things don’t go to plan. The more opportunities we have to try things for ourselves, the more these skills come to life. The £5 Blossom Challenge - The Guildhall, Hull Last November, I had the pleasure of supporting Longhill Primary School as part of the £5 Blossom - a programme run by the Youth Enterprise Bank team, Hull City Council. The programme brought together 10 primary schools and 10 local businesses, pairing them to support pupils as they developed their ideas. Each team took a small investment of £150 from their business partners and turned it into real business projects, making and selling products, running activities, and organising events all with a shared purpose, not only generating profit but also supporting Joy for Joel, a local charity helping a young person living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. At the March celebration event at The Guildhall, students showcased their business projects to an audience of children, teachers, business owners, and councillors. It was inspiring to watch them confidently share their ideas and celebrate their achievements. You could see the Big 13 Enterprise Skills in action - creativity, teamwork, and digital skills all coming together as they brought their ideas to life and turned their small investment into a profit. I was very proud to see Bella, Brinley, Melody and Naomi from Longhill Primary share that their business had made an amazing £325.46 profit from making and selling bracelets, biscuit decorating, and other creative activities. I really enjoyed being part of their journey from seeing them in action at their Christmas fayre, to visiting the school to share more about my business, and helping as their graphic designer on a Zoom call to create posters for their Valentine’s event, building their digital communication skills. It was also brilliant to see the support they received from their teacher Louisa White who really does go above and beyond for the children. Across all 10 schools who took part they generated over £4,000 in total for their schools and Joy for Joel - showing just what children can achieve when curiosity and creativity are combined with purpose. To finish the day, the children enjoyed a private tour of Hull Guildhall, visiting the Lord Mayor’s Chambers. We even got to sit on the sofa where Queen Elizabeth II once sat, and walked the historic halls - a memorable celebration of their achievements that further inspired the children. A question to leave you with... It all comes back to that simple question: could you start a business with £150? Sometimes all it takes is a small investment, curiosity, and the willingness to try. Whether it’s a school project, a creative idea at home, or something bigger in your life, thinking about what you could do with that £150 can open up possibilities. It’s a reminder that building skills, experimenting, and being brave enough to try can lead to real, meaningful results both for you and for others. April 2026 Get Your Business Noticed

surfaces and add depth. A note on layering light – use warm-coloured bulbs. Cool white can make a space feel clinical while warm tones add more of an inviting, bespoke quality.” – David House & Home Small Tweaks Can Make A Big Difference “Many people assume you need a full renovation to refresh your kitchen but a few clever, budget- friendly tweaks can make a huge difference. One of my favourite approaches is to mix and match. If your carcasses are in good condition, keep them and simply upgrade what’s around them. Add new doors, change up your handles and finish off with a new worktop. It’s an easy way to achieve a high- end, bespoke look without the expensive price tag.” – Aaron Green, Green Cherry Services Ltd. New Door Fronts Can Change Up A Space “If you’re working with a smaller budget, the one update I’d recommend, especially for a space that feels a bit dated, is replacing the door fronts and drawer panels. Even if the layout and carcasses remain the same, swapping out the fronts instantly changes the personality of a space. It’s a way to go from tired to tailored without the cost and disruption of a full renovation, and it gives you a canvas to introduce colour, texture or style that better reflects your taste. For materials, finishes and colours for door fronts, solid wood or wood-effect finishes are the easiest way to add some warmth and perceived value. Painted MDF in sage, dove grey, or navy (softer hues) adds depth, while textured laminates or gloss finishes can make the kitchen feel contemporary and high-end. Subtle Continued on Page 8 Elevate Your Kitchen Without Spending A Fortune A stylish kitchen doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With a few clever updates – be it affordable hard- ware swaps or chic cabinet upgrades – you can transform your space into something that feels polished, modern and luxe. We spoke to three lo- cal experts to find out how to give your kitchen a refresh without blowing the budget… details like shaker-style panels or beaded edges can also lift the look without much expense. You just want to make sure you’re choosing a finish that complements the rest of your home and feels intentional.” – David Moore, D Moore Building Services. “Sterile white kitchens are a thing of the past, so if you’re replacing door fronts, look for something that will add interest. A classic shaker style door in a matte, warm neutral, paired with brass hardware, will elevate the look and create a timeless and elegant design. If you have a kitchen island, consider complementing the neutral palette with darker doors such as dark earthy green.” – Neil Crawford, Crawford Joinery Lighting Is Transformative “Lighting can dramatically transform a kitchen and is one of the most effective ways to elevate a dated design. Layering is key – combining ambient, task, and accent lighting ensures the space is both functional and inviting. Affordable wall lights provide focused task lighting, while casting a soft, warm glow, and pendant lights over a kitchen island create a stylish focal point. We recommend designing kitchen lighting on two or three circuits with dimmable ceiling spotlights so you can adjust the setting from bright in the daytime to a softer, more relaxed glow for evening entertaining.” – Neil “Lighting is going to be of the most important things you can change to create more of a high- end atmosphere, and the most inexpensive way to do this would be getting some under-cabinet LED strips which can highlight work April 2026 Get Your Business Noticed

House & Home the full cost. For a luxurious feel, consider thicker or waterfall edges, minimal seams or a two- tone scheme with a darker island and lighter perimeter surfaces. Thoughtful lighting can also make budget-conscious surfaces feel bespoke and sophisticated.” – Neil “Worktops are another area where small choices make a big difference. You can pick up some laminate to mimic stone or timber – simply select textured finishes or panels with edge details that look more substantial. Butcher- block surfaces are also relatively inexpensive and instantly warm the kitchen. Even just extending a laminate worktop slightly beyond the cabinet base or adding a co- ordinating splashback can elevate the perceived quality of the room.” – David If In Doubt, Paint “A lick of paint can also breathe new life into tired units. Just make sure to clean, sand and prime properly beforehand. For extra durability, I often recommend a scratch-resistant paint like Scuff X as it stands up brilliantly in busy kitchens.” – Aaron “You don’t need everything to be bespoke to feel luxurious. The trick is to keep the palette consistent and repeat key materials or colours throughout so that the kitchen feels curated rather than piecemeal.” – David The Right Worktops Matter “Solid wood worktops or butcher blocks add warmth and character, while engineered stone, quartz composite or porcelain slabs offer the look of natural stone without Accessories Make A Huge Impact “Open shelving can make a huge impact. It creates an airy, designer look and lets you display your best pieces. Style yours with stacked crockery, a few well-worn cookbooks, a potted herb or two and some vintage glassware. Even if you have closed cupboards, consider removing one door to create a section of open shelving and make the space feel lighter and more lived-in.” – Aaron Flooring Can Be Updated “Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) can mimic wood or stone beautifully and is much more affordable, perfect if you want to tie the space together. I recommend Karndean for its durability, design choice and realistic finish.” – Aaron Finally, Don’t Ignore The Hardware “Hardware has the power to completely shift the perception of a kitchen, regardless of budget. Even the most straightforward and budget-friendly cabinetry can feel more bespoke when fitted with well-made handles in solid materials like brass. The key is to avoid lightweight or plated options, as these tend to feel hollow and wear poorly over time. Instead, choose hardware with a tangible weight and depth of finish as it instantly lends credibility to the design. Finishes such as burnished brass, dark brushed brass or antique bronze all introduce warmth and richness, while matt black or nickel can create a more architectural edge. Paying attention to scale and proportion also makes a big difference: larger pulls or knobs with a refined profile can bring balance to simpler doors and make the whole kitchen feel more intentional.” – David CRAWFORD JOINERY TIME-SERVED JOINER ⚪25+ YEARS EXPERIENCE FREE QUOTES ⚪COTTINGHAM BASED Phone: 07764 946676 Email: crawford1919@icloud.com ALL ASPECTS OF JOINERY including: ⚪KITCHENS ⚪STAIRS ⚪FLOORS & DOORS ⚪BEDROOMS Now taking bookings for 2026 April 2026 Get Your Business Noticed

House & Home After years of dithering I’m about to buy a new kitchen, and, as per the rules of various curses I believe have been placed upon me, I am overwhelmed, overthinking and all at sea. For a while, the kitchens offered for inspiration – the ones you’d see on telly in the houses of the rich and famous – were very white and very shiny. Their surfaces were never bothered by spilt tomato sauce or crumbs. We were buying into a certain dystopian fantasy where humans and their stupid hungers had been replaced by laminated cupboards that could not be slammed, and fridges that ordered their own milk. These kitchens were a reaction to those advertised to my parents’ generation. Back then, even those living on the eighth floor overlook- ing an A-road coveted a kitchen that appeared to have been ripped from a rural cottage. The desire was for a kitchen carved from one’s own orchard, ideally around an Aga and ancestral wealth. Flipping through the Ikea catalogue from 1990, you see a scene of sunlit domesticity – breakfast for three waits upon a tablecloth, surrounded by pine cupboards and tulip-patterned cur- tains. There’s a sense of moral purity to these kitchens, one available at a very competitive price. While I developed a hankering for the sunken treat counter as seen on The Traitors, where they binge on chocolate buttons while deciding who to murder, I’m leaning towards the 1980s bachelor pad. Perhaps it’s a response to the tumult of life with small children: the constant boiling of peas, half-eaten crumpets on tables, homework cobbled together at the counter. Who would deny me the fantasy of un-finger- printed steel? When I realised we needed a new kitchen, I started looking at magazines and social media for inspiration, but quickly decided my imagination was too limited to picture my family becoming perfect enough to breakfast within their walls. So, as the fantasy kitchens of Instagram began to feel somehow threatening, out of reach and yet right there in my hand, I found my- self looking for more realistic ideas on Rightmove. Every picture of a kitchen suggests a life lived well. Like in the maga- zine ads, you must insert yourself into a stranger’s world but, as long as your search remains humble, the stakes are lower. Swiping carefully, you find houses for sale after dec- ades in use, with kitchens that have seen a thousand dinners, whose fridges are an inch thick with phone bills and educational ephemera. This, you’ll see zooming in, is where the kettle should be for ease of tea, and here is where you’ll end up pil- ing your mail. A kitchen can be built out of scraps of knowledge. It can also be built out of literal scraps. This weekend I’m driving to a farm near Lincoln to pick up a kitchen a farmer’s selling on Face- book Marketplace. I wasn’t expect- ing to find inspiration among baby clothes and bicycles, but last night, there it was, rusty with potential. The perfect kitchen is one that works around you. One that accom- modates a collection of sentimental mugs and your family’s evening rows, but invites a sigh of relief as you enter, hungover, on a Sunday. Once beaten into shape, from cupboards made of old Spitfires, I can picture a balance of chrome and history that suits our 0realistic ambition, while offering a modest flake of fantasy. Dr. Russell Davies - Dental Surgeon GDC 62838 Sharron Daniels - Dental Nurse GDC 136968 MOB: 07930 550274 A new sex survey identified a list of 237 distinct reasons why people have sex - Sex Therapist Ann Leslie gives her take on the results... Below, I’ve gone deeper into why sex and pleasure bring all these longevity rewards. But to start, I want to say that they only do so when sex is wanted and feels safe, and that you don’t have to be partnered to reap the wellbeing benefits. As with all things about sex, at the core is determining what ‘good sex’ and pleasure done right looks like for you. 1 It builds you-you connection Pleasure is a legitimate part of looking after your health. You could say regularly making time for it is the ultimate act of self-care. This is about more than what you feel in the moment or whether you orgasm. It’s about connecting with your body in a way that feels good, and mindfulness, because you won’t be thinking about all the other 1,000 things going on in your life. In a world of notifications, attention-grabbing demands and urgency, if it feels as though your sex life is taking a back seat, prioritising it can be the pushback your wellbeing needs. 2 It’s a natural stress antidote Sexual activity, and specifically orgasms, downregulate the nervous system, prompting the release of a feelgood cocktail of hormones and neurotransmitters (hello, calming oxytocin and happy dopamine), which can shift the body into a more parasympathetic, relaxed and calm state. These magical molecules have a buffering effect on stress hormones, such as cortisol, and are responsible for that post-pleasure feeling of calm and relaxation, as well as having sleep-promoting properties. And as research shows, better sleep and less stress is associated with a longer health span. 3 Connection and closeness For many couples, good sex fosters a sense of connection and closeness. When we feel desired by our partner, it plays a role in relationship satisfaction, trust and positive self-esteem. Sex marks the difference between the couple Five Ways That Sex Supports Healthy Ageing... part of our relationship and the cohabitation, coparenting and coworking parts. So often, the couple part can become lost under all the other stuff, leaving us feeling dampened and desexualised. If that sounds familiar, the solution isn’t about what you choose to do sexually, but the intention and attention you pay to whatever sex you decide to have together. 4 ‘I wanna get physical’ While it does depend on the type of sex that you are having, sex is physical exertion and exercise. (One of the study reasons for having sex was ‘I wanted to burn calories!’.) Regular sexual activity (with the emphasis on the word activity) improves cardiovascular health, the immune system and sleep, plus the endorphins that you release are a natural painkiller. All of the above contribute to all-round health improvements. As a side note on cardiovascular health, if you have a male partner and they experience any sudden changes in their erections (particularly morning erections), this is something to get checked out; it can be an early indicator of health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, low testosterone or cardiovascular disease. 5 The more you do it… the more you’ll do it A consistent sex life, whatever that looks like for you, can play a role in maintaining that sex life over time, in terms of desire and physical functioning. If you’re struggling with a long gap in your sex life, often the worry about the length of the gap can loom larger in your thoughts than the lack of sex. Regularity of sex – remember, there is no right or wrong when it comes to what regular means for you – helps to keep you feeling confident about sex. You may find that getting connected to pleasure and your sexual body also feels reassuring – an acknowledgement that your desire is still there – and so the more you have it, the more you want it. This is shown in the research: not only does more desire make people want to have more sex, but having more sex boosts desire, too. You will no doubt be able to think of more reasons to keep having sex – there are at least 237, after all - you’ll have your own combination. Good sex isn’t a requirement for a long life, but it does roll pleasure, exercise and stress release into one enjoyable habit. Health & Wellbeing News April 2026 Get Your Business Noticed

and gently tackles a range of concerns. That said, you don’t have to invest: a good facial massage goes a long way. Hands over gadgets, always. Icing is another underrated step – great for de- puffing, boosting circulation and refining pores. A Treatment I’d Recommend… I rate lymphatic facials for sculpting – ideal before an event. If you’re open to something more advanced, polynucleotide injections are my go-to for boosting glow and improving texture. A Throwback Beauty Product I Still Love… Embryolisse cream. It’s stood the test of time for a reason – it just makes skin look good. No fuss, no trend cycle, just reliable prep. You Don’t Need To Always Spend A Lot To Get Good Results… I always come back to simple, no-frills cleansers, French pharmacy staples and straight forward hydrating serums. Bioderma Micellar Water and La Roche- Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 are constants – the latter is a true all-rounder that hydrates and supports the skin barrier. Food & Drink Rebekah’s Beauty Box My Skincare Secrets I am probably best known for my make-up advice, however I am also a self-confessed skincare obsessive, I know great skin is the foundation of every good beauty look. Here, I share the routines, rules and products that I always come back to.... The Skincare Step I’d Never Skip… Cleansing, always. There are certain circumstances where it’s totally appropriate to skip serum, eye cream or even moisturiser but cleansing the skin thoroughly before applying make-up is the key to achieving a smooth, even base. A Skincare Ingredient I Rate… Everyone chases actives but glycerin is what really keeps skin looking plump, calm and luminous. It’s reliable, non-irritating and quietly does the heavy lifting. Dr. Jart+’s Ceramidin Lotion is a go-to, combining glycerin with ceramides to support the skin barrier and leave it feeling cocooned and comfortable – especially when it’s a little compromised or overworked. The At-Home Tool That Will Actually Make A Difference… Consistency is everything. I use the LYMA Pro LED to target ageing, pigmentation and scarring – it helps support collagen A Lifestyle Factor I Swear By For Better Skin… Sleep. Proper sleep. It’s not glamorous but it visibly changes everything – tone, brightness, puffiness. You can fake glow with make-up but you can’t fake being well-rested. A Golden Rule For Prepping The Skin Ahead Of Make-Up Application… Allow your skincare to settle. Rushing in leads to pilling, slipping and that ‘make-up sitting on top’ finish. Give it a minute – let everything absorb before you start applying your base. You Can Find Some Really Brilliant Skincare-Make-Up Hybrids… Skin tints are a great example – sheer coverage with added benefits. I really do love the Clarins Double Serum Foundation for a bit more coverage with skincare built in and the wonderful ILIA Beauty Super Serum Skin Tint for something sheer, breathable and softly dewy. Some Current Favourite Buys Include… SPF: La Roche-Posay make an SPF that is specifically designed for people who suffer from pigmentation. This is my current go-to as I’ve struggled with melasma since my first pregnancy six years ago. Serum: For clients, I reach for something hydrating and barrier-supporting like MERIT Beauty’s Great Skin Serum. Personally, I swear by the Obagi Vitamin C 15% – brightening, protective and refining. Cleanser: Gentle but effective – Tatcha’s The Rice Wash. Moisturiser: Texture- dependent but always nourishing. Clé de Peau Beauté’s La Crème for something luxe or Lancôme’s Absolue Crème Riche for rich, comforting hydration. Health & Beauty April 2026 Get Your Business Noticed

Erkan Sahindal - business owner at the Olive Tree on Lincoln Way, Beverley - and accomplished chef shares his recipe for Black bean Shakshuka where Texas meets Mexico for a Middle Eastern-style brunch. SERVES 4 PREP 10 mins COOK 40 mins EASY V INGREDIENTS 1 large onion 2 peppers 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 2 garlic cloves 2 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp dried oregano 1-2 tsp chipotle paste, to taste 400g can chopped tomatoes 400g can black beans, drained and rinsed 4 eggs fresh coriander leaves METHOD 1 Finely slice the onion and deseed and slice the peppers, then heat Food & Drink a wide, deep frying pan over a medium heat and pour in a good glug of olive oil. Scatter in the onion and peppers along with a pinch of salt and the cumin seeds. Cook gently for 8-10 mins, stirring every now and then, until soft and starting to colour. Grate the garlic and add that, then sprinkle over the paprika, oregano and stir in the chipotle paste. Stir for a minute or two until fragrant and the paste is toasted. 2 Tip in the tomatoes and black beans, season with a little more salt and pepper, then bring to a gentle simmer. Leave to bubble gently, uncovered, for 15-20 mins, stirring occasionally, until thick. Use the back of a spoon to make four little hollows in the sauce. Crack an egg into each one, season the eggs lightly, then cover the pan with a lid and cook gently for 5-6 mins or until the whites are just set but the yolks are still soft. Take the pan to the table and finish with coriander scattered over the top. Serve with warm tortillas, sliced avocado or guacamole, soured cream or thick yogurt, lime wedges for squeezing over and hot sauce on the side so everyone can build their own plate. Erkans tips • Get ahead You can make the pepper, tomato and bean base up to two days ahead. Leave to cool, then cover and chill. Reheat gently in the Black bean shakshuka pan, adding a splash of water if it’s thickened too much, then crack in the eggs, cook and serve. • Pepper plant points Did you know that different coloured peppers count as different plant points? So, whenever you’re cooking with more than one pepper, mix it up. • Make it Vegan Without the eggs you have a really quick vegan chilli that you can use to fill burritos or tacos. Gnocchi tray bake with lemony ricotta Achieve over half your daily fibre intake in just one meal. SERVES 2 • PREP 10 mins COOK 40 mins • EASY V INGREDIENTS 1 courgette 100g baby plum tomatoes 2 garlic cloves 500g gnocchi 100g artichokes in oil, plus 2 tbsp of the oil 1/2 tsp chilli flakes 1 lemon 85g ricotta 10g basil METHOD 1 Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/ gas 8. Halve then thickly slice the courgette, and halve the tomatoes. Lightly crush the garlic cloves. Tip the gnocchi, courgette and tomatoes into a large roasting tray. Add the artichokes and oil, the garlic and chilli flakes, and season. Mix well, then bake for 30-35 mins, or until the gnocchi is crisp at the edges and the veg is soft. 2 Meanwhile, zest the lemon, then cut into wedges. Mix the ricotta and lemon zest together in a small bowl, then season. Dot this over the gnocchi. Roughly chop the basil, then sprinkle over the gnocchi. 3 Divide the gnocchi between two bowls, mixing well so the ricotta breaks down into a creamy sauce. Serve with the lemon wedges for squeezing over. PER SERVING 799 kcals • fat 21g • saturates 5g • carbs 130g • sugars 7g • fibre 16g • protein 14g •salt 1.2g April 2026 Get Your Business Noticed

Food & Drink Add these pantry staples and freezer ingredients to your regular meals to easily boost your daily intake 1 Lentils Lentils are a nutritional power- house, and an excellent choice for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Contributing about 3-8g fibre per 100g (cooked, depending on variety), lentils are rich in plant- based protein, iron and folate. They’re incredibly versatile and make a great addition to soups, stews, curries, salads and veggie burgers, as well as an excellent way to make meat go further or add substance to a dish. They also absorb flavour well, so are a great partner to bold spices and aromatics. 2 Chia seeds Chia seeds pack an impressive 34g fibre per 100g, and though you’re unlikely to eat that much in one go, even a single tablespoon contains 5g fibre. They’re also a useful plant- based source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, calcium, magnesium and protective plant compounds. They work well in overnight oats, smoothies and chia puddings, but can also be simply stirred into porridge, sprinkled over yogurt or blended into baked goods. 3 Black beans Black beans contain about 8.7g fibre per 100g (cooked) and are an excellent source of protein, iron and folate. These beans are a staple in the Americas, often featuring in chillis, burritos, salads and soups. Their earthy flavour makes them a popular choice in slowly simmered dishes like stews, as well as plant- based burgers. Beyond the classic pairing with rice, black beans can be blended into dips for a nutritious, fibre-rich snack. 4 Green peas Green peas contain 5.6g fibre per 100g (boiled) and are a versatile addition to many dishes, including risottos, soups, salads and pasta. You can also mash them to spread on toast, whizz into a dip or serve as a side. Their natural sweetness and vibrant colour make them popular with children and adults alike, and they’re a budget-friendly freezer staple. 5 Oats In their unprepared form, oats provide about 7.8g fibre per 100g, while an average-sized bowl of porridge provides about 1.8g. Oats are particularly high in a type of soluble fibre called beta-glucan, which has been proven to lower cholesterol levels. Although most commonly enjoyed as a breakfast staple, they can also be added to smoothies, flapjacks and even savoury dishes, like oatcakes and veggie burgers. 6 Wholemeal bread White flour is stripped of much of its fibre, so choose bread made with wholemeal flour instead, which offers about 7g fibre per two thick slices (or about 100g). Wholemeal bread is made using flour that retains all parts of the grain, making it a nutritious and filling option. Use it for sandwiches and toast, or try transforming slices into crunchy croutons for sprinkling over soups and salads. Ten High-Fibre Foods to add to your weekly shopping list 7 Almonds Containing about 12.5g fibre per 100g (or about 3.8g fibre per small handful), almonds are a great snack choice, as they’re also high in vitamin E, magnesium and heart- friendly monounsaturated fats, and are a useful source of protein. Outside of snacking, almonds can be chopped and sprinkled over porridge or salads, ground and used in place of breadcrumbs or blended into a nut butter. They work well in both sweet and savoury dishes, from granola and flapjacks to roasted vegetable salads. Try sprinkling over vegetable sides, using to garnish a soup or adding to your favourite bakes. 8 Broccoli Boiled or steamed, broccoli provides about 2.8g fibre per 100g, and is a rich source of vitamins C and K. Although often boiled and served as a side, this cruciferous vegetable can be steamed, roasted or stir- fried. It also works well whizzed into creamy soups or tossed into pasta or risotto – its mild, slightly bitter flavour pairs well with cheese, lemon, garlic and nuts, making it easy to include in a host of dishes. 9 Raspberries The fibre content of raspberries comes largely from their tiny seeds, offering an impressive 3.3g fibre per 100g. The berries are rich in vitamin C and a range of protective plant compounds, too, and their tart-sweet flavour makes them a delicious addition to breakfast bowls, smoothies, yogurt and desserts. Sprinkle over porridge, blend into sauces or bake into muffins, cakes and crumbles. 10 Carrots Carrots provide 2.8g fibre per 100g (cooked), and are rich in beta-carotene, the plant source of vitamin A. Add to salads, soups, stews and roasted vegetable bakes, or eat raw as a snack, grate into wraps or coleslaw, or blend into smoothies (they provide subtle natural sweetness). Roasting carrots in olive oil makes a delicious side – plus, cooking actually boosts their nutritional value, by making nutrients like beta-carotene easier for the body to absorb. Key Health Benefits of High Fibre Intake • Improved Digestive Health: fibre increases stool bulk and softens it, aiding in regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. It also reduces the risk of hemorrhoids and diverticular disease. • Heart Health Improvement: Soluble fibre helps lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels and can reduce blood pressure, lowering the overall risk of cardiovascular disease. • Weight Management: High- fibre foods take longer to chew and digest, leading to a feeling of fullness (satiety) for longer periods, which can help manage calorie intake. • Blood Sugar Control: Fibre, particularly soluble fibre, slows down the absorption of sugar, which prevents sharp spikes in blood glucose levels, aiding in type 2 diabetes prevention and management. • Gut Microbiome Support: Fibre acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial bacteria in the gut (such as lactobacillus and bifidobacteria), which supports immune function and reduces inflammation. • Reduced Disease Risk: Strong evidence suggests high fibre intake is linked to a lower risk of colorectal cancer. Key Recommendations: Adults should aim for 30g of fibre per day. Always check with your doctor before changing your diet. April 2026 Get Your Business Noticed

Canada in a Nutshell.. If anyone asks about my favourite places in the world Canada always pops up, Western Canada is probably the only place I would consider living. The country has everything to offer for example: vibrant cities, scenery, adventure, sport and wildlife. Beautiful summers and cold winters for fabulous skiing opportunities. More and more travellers now enjoy bite sized escapes, city breaks to New York and Boston are always popular, as an alternative Eastern Canada’s Toronto or Montreal is no greater in distance and there are plenty of options for a long weekend break. Both located on rivers, summer is a great time to visit to enjoy the outdoors. Toronto has many cultural attractions to offer along with great shopping and you can also take in one of the natural wonders of the world “Niagara Falls” a short drive from the City. Montreal is interesting, this French Canadian city is home of pilgrims of Notre Dam, I recommend a visit to the Montreal Story. A visit to the Olympic park is also excellent to see how they have utilised these facilities to include both sport and leisure. Most citizens are French speaking so a phrase book might be handy! Do you enjoy rail travel? If so this is a great little itinerary allowing you to experience changing scenery from Vancouver on the west coast, through the awesome Rockies continuing across the great plains on a journey finish- ing in Toronto. The journey includes 4 nights sleeping on your train. For this tour I would recommend tagging on a few days before if your time permits to enjoy my favourite city in the world Vancouver. Don’t miss historical Gas Town see the statue of Gassy Jack’ who hailed from our home city, Hull. Stanley Park is one of my favourite spots great for cycling, bikes can be hired very easily. For an easy overview of the city take a trolley tour but just be warned don’t get off in Stanley Park as you may not get back on! Stanley Park is one of my favourite spots great for cycling, bikes can be hired very easily. For an easy overview of the city take a trolley tour but just be warned don’t get off in Stanley Park as you may not get back on! I am full of many tips to help you get the most out of your holiday when you make your booking. You will need to add a night in Toronto before flying home but I would recommend at least two. Ideally you should allow a minimum of 9 nights 10 days to includes your overnight flight home for this rail holiday. As for the maximum time, in my eyes there is no maximum, I have enjoyed so many visits to this country. The Calgary Stampede which takes place every July is an event I can guarantee will have your adrenalin flowing and at times sitting on the edge of your seat. This ideally requires 3 nights and would very easily add into an itinerary or make a short break on its own. Known as the greatest show on earth, I agree whole heartedly. Grab your Stetson join the cowboys, and enjoy the atmosphere! The scenery and wildlife of the Rockies is simply amazing and no one ever returns not having had an amazing time. The ultimate luxury experience includes the iconic Rocky Mountaineer soaking up the scenery from a panoramic dome carriage affording you the very best views followed by an Alaskan Cruise This tour utilises your time on your holiday to include all the must see sights with knowledgeable guides taking care of you throughout, travel from your door to the airport make for a carefree memorable holiday. May to September is your window to enjoy this area, you may see a variety of wildlife even including Moose, Bear, Bald Eagles and much more paired with stunning scenery and perhaps the odd glacier carving right in front of your very eyes! If you have been lucky enough to have visited Canada many times you may be looking for a different experience as Canadian Specialists I am sure we can pull something new out of the bag. For an Autumn break why not take up the opportunity to pay a visit to Churchill and enjoy viewing the Polar Bears before they go out on the ice? The way of life up here is also very different, the locals are friendly and I found it truly memorable. If you are looking to visit Canada, get in touch and let’s get the ball rolling to create your perfect adventure in this huge country just waiting to be explored. We are currently seeing some of the most significant changes to policing and justice in a generation, and it is important to ask if these national shifts are truly the right fit for our local area. The decision to phase out my office by 2028 is a major part of this. While it is often presented as a way to streamline the system, we are concerned that it actually moves us away from a model where the public has a direct say. Instead of an elected representative who is accountable to you at the ballot box, the new ‘policing leads’ will be appointed by boards and committees. To us, an appointed official can never represent a community’s interests as strongly as someone the public has chosen themselves. This shift toward centralisation is also visible in the proposal to merge our 43 police forces into much larger regional units. Our own local survey showed that over 80% of you are against these larger boundaries, and we share that hesitation. When policing becomes regional, there is a natural tendency for resources to gravitate toward large cities. We worry that our coastal and rural areas, from Hornsea and Market Weighton, to villages like Ulceby or Bugthorpe, might struggle to get their fair share of officers and investment if the leadership is based in a distant regional headquarters. Financially, the ‘savings’ of removing my office are also debatable. While it cuts election costs, it risks losing the dedicated team that brings in millions of pounds in extra grants for our local services - funding that far outweighs the office’s running costs. Policing in this country has always relied on the consent and lead of the public. As we move through these next two years, our focus remains on ensuring that our local voice isn’t lost in a larger, more distant system. We will do everything we can to make sure that ‘local’ stays at the heart of policing, no matter what the new structure looks like. SAFER STREETS WINTER OF ACTION Following on from the previous Home Office summer initiative, our office has worked with Humberside Police and the Community Safety Partnerships on coordination of the Winter of Action campaign. The campaign focused on 13 defined areas across the region between 1 December - 31 January 2026 experiencing the highest levels of harm and demand. Enforcement, partnership and prevention activity was aligned to the national focus on retail crime, ASB and street crime, safety in the nighttime economy and violence against women and girls. These areas included Hull City Centre, Beverley Road/Spring Bank/Princes Avenue, Kingswood Leisure Park, Beverley, and Goole. ACTIVITY INCLUDED: • Intelligence-led hotspot patrols • Targeted enforcement and use of available powers • Licensing and safeguarding activity within the nighttime economy • Youth engagement and diversionary interventions • Substance misuse and health-based partnership responses • Community reassurance and environmental improvements POL-ED My Office has purchased Pol-Ed educational resources. The resources are now available completely free of charge to all schools and organisations working with children and young people across the Humber region. Created by West Yorkshire Police and subject matter experts, Pol-Ed is an educational programme that teaches young people about risks, citizenship and the law. Jonathan Evison, Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside said “Pol-Ed gives teachers and youth workers the tools to help young people make positive, informed choices by deepening their understanding of the law and building resilience”. VOLUNTEERING Our volunteers are essential to our commitment to transparency, ensuring local policing remains fair, effective, and accountable. By reviewing real cases and data across panels such as Use of Police Powers, Hate Crime, Domestic Abuse/VAWG, and Independent Custody Scrutiny, these ‘critical friends’ help shape future policies and improve local services. Our award-winning Independent Custody Visitor (ICV) scheme involves unannounced visits to check on the welfare and rights of detainees. In 2023, it received Platinum accreditation - the highest national recognition for oversight standards. Additionally, our Animal Welfare Scheme volunteers conduct quarterly visits to police dog kennels; last year, six volunteers performed five visits to check on 17 dogs. What’s On & Competitions “Six in 26 a micro anniversary tour - Nik Kershaw and his Band embark on a limited run of shows to mark his 50 years as a responsible adult. Also known as “the no real reason we can think of, tour” and “the why the Hell not, tour”. Expect hits and more. In fact, expect whatever you like!” Born Nicholas David Kershaw on 1st March 1958 in Bristol, he grew up in Ipswich where he discovered his love for music. His father was an architect and flautist in the town’s orchestra and his mother trained as an opera singer. He describes himself as a late developer, first picking up a guitar when he was 15, as a result of watching a TV documentary on David Bowie. Other early influences included such diverse artists as T-Rex, Deep Purple, Simon & Garfunkel and Genesis. Several local bands later and after three years working as a civil servant, he grabbed the opportunity to turn professional. He signed with MCA Records in 1983 and, in the September of the same year, “I Won’t Let The Sun Go Down” was released for the first time, reaching a respectable No.47 in the UK charts ( achieving a rather more respectable No. 2 when re- released the following summer). This was followed in January 1984 by “Wouldn’t It Be good” which languished gracefully at No.4 in the UK charts for five weeks and was to break Kershaw worldwide. The seminal “Human Racing” album was released in March and achieved platinum sales in many territories. He managed to squeeze in two European tours, four more hit singles and another platinum album (“The Riddle”) before the end of the year. 1985 saw three hit singles, tours of Europe, Canada, Australia, the States and Japan and an appearance at “Live Aid”. The Hull City Column - by Chris Warkup one thing we can hope for is that Acun doesn`t go wild with his new found tv riches and waste every penny on transfers and big wages but recoups some of his investment to reduce the clubs debts, spends a reasonable figure on players who would remain in either division and actually invest in the training ground and other facilities for the long-term benefit of the football club. Burnley have managed to yo-yo for around twenty years by not wasting all of their revenue on players and being realistic that squads need to be good enough to bounce between the two divisions and money should also be invested into their infrastructure. Ipswich bought nearly all of the best players from the Championship in a plan to bounce back until they can slowly develop a foothold in the top division over the coming years. There is roughly one month to go and we have to hope that all of this season’s hard work is not frittered away. Next season could be so much harder if the likes of West Ham or Spurs are relegated whilst so many of this current squad may have moved on by next season to clear debts or are tempted by better offers. Things have come together so well this season through the transfer restrictions which lead to quality loans or free transfers, Acun allowing the recruitment experts to find quality rather expensive foreign signings, and the arrival of Sergej Jakirovc and his coaching team. Sergej is probably our greatest assset and let’s hope he can lead us to as least a Wembley showdown. Let’s just hope his hard work is rewarded and he remains here next season as no doubt his qualities have been recognised elsewhere. We dare to dream? Starting off with a trip to Oxford on Good Friday Hull City have just seven games remaining to reach the elusive Play-Offs and then potentially defeat two rivals from within the top six of the Championship to win a place in the Premier League at Wembley. The Tigers are currently in fifth position but only three points ahead of Southampton and Wrexham in sixth and seventh position. The average points total to reach the top six is around 75 so Hull City would require at least three more victories before May 2nd and hope that either Wrexham or Southampton falter. Southampton should be seen as our biggest threat after something like ten consecutive victories have brought them from relegation positions to the promotion race. Wrexham appear to have a harder fixtures than us but most of media would welcome them in the Premier League. City have a fairly daunting set of fixtures with a number of teams fighting to survive and prospective champions Coventry City on Easter Monday, though saying that this is the type of game we tend to win. The last seven games are Oxford away, Coventry at home, Seven games to go. Will City reach the Play-Offs? Sheffield United away, Birmingham at home, Leicester away, Charlton away and Norwich at home on May 2nd. If City play to their maximum and everyone remains fit we are more than capable of picking up the required points but we know from past experience that this club always finds a way to make things harder for themselves. Even last season safety was almost assumed by the corresponding International break but as we struggled to pick up any further points. Derby and Luton, both seemingly dead and buried picked up a dozen points and but for Luton finally running out of steam at West Brom would have sent us down. Nothing is ever certain with Hull City though it must also be mentioned that we have never lost in 90 minutes at Wembley. Two positives on the horizon are the imminent return of Ryan Giles (pictured below) and third comeback for Mohamed Belloumi (Pictured above). If Giles can return to his early season form we could lay on further goals for Ollie McBurnie whilst the Algerian winger looks quality in the few games we have seen him pre and post his year-long ACL injury. There is no doubt City have the firepower for the remaining fixtures with McBurnie, Geldhardt, Joseph and Koumas but it’s the defence which is our achilles heel with sloppy mistakes in several games and an air of panic if opponents crowd the penalty box for corners or other dead-balls. All we can continue to do is outscore the opposition though the odd draw wouldn’t go amiss over the coming weeks. There has been much discussion on whether We’d actually like to return to the big league. Everyone has their eyes wide open this time. This was all a bit of a dream back in 2008 when we first reached the promised land, but now we know what things are likely to be. Clubs like Southampton and Sheffield United have struggled to reach around fifteen points or actually win any game for weeks. In our early years we reached around thirty points but over the past decade things have become so much harder for promoted clubs. Even established mid-table teams have spent hundreds of millions on players and have massive squads whilst we would struggle to put together a reasonable first eleven let-alone back-ups for all positions. I am delighted to see the planting of trees on the new road development of the A164 around Jock’s Lodge. It is proposed that a total of 127,000 trees will be planted along the roadside with a separate project planting areas with another 38,000 native trees. Much of the blackthorn has disappeared during these roadworks, but surely as a hedgerow stalwart much of the new planting will include this species. Once blackthorn comes in flower it never ceases to impress and lift our spirits. When trees burn After Philip Larkin The blackthorn blazes white in blooming before its spirit fades to leaf. Spring’s beacon shines, disowning grief disarming winter’s last gasp gloom. It seems to sing out start afresh all things must change. An assurance of brighter days, the heady dance of bees, the modest fruit’s dark flesh. Ian Humphreys Moving on to something completely different, I am sure that many of you have enjoyed a Pesto made with pine nuts. You can eat nuts from any variety of pine tree; most of them are too small to bother with, but one exception is those of the Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) or Umbrella Pine which grows at its best in the Mediterranean region and the Levant. It has a distinctive umbrella shape, hence its name. The nuts are expensive as their removal from the cones is by hand. Cones do not produce vast quantities of nuts and a single nut can take 18 months to 3 years to fully develop. The trees themselves take from 7 to 10 years before they begin to produce cones, and one cone may only produce 35 to 50 nuts. So treasure your Pesto: the lemons, the garlic, the pepper, the basil, olive oil and parmesan cheese will take far less time to produce than the pine nuts. No wonder pine nuts are so pricey. IN THE GARDEN After the rain we have endured this winter there must be plenty of moist mulch around such as rotted autumn leaves and compost which can be used now to protect our plants throughout the summer. A good, thick layer of damp mulch is like a duvet to a plant, providing moisture and retaining warmth. There are other things in our garden that like a duvet of mulch, and that is the nesting birds. However carefully you apply it, the birds will peck their way through it, enjoying a tasty meal on the way to collecting building material for their nests. I find that they scatter their rejected bits all over the place, undoing my hard labour. Where possible I use chicken wire for protection by laying it over as much of the mulch as possible and securing it firmly. One disadvantage of our easily available decaying leaves at home is that they blow in from the adjacent sycamore trees and therefore thousands of sycamore seeds enjoy the ready- made germinating conditions. I am forever picking up the seedlings. If you use old grass cuttings for this task they too will come with a little added extra in the form of weed seeds such as buttercups, groundsel and dandelions. Towards the end of the month tall plants such as delphiniums will begin to shoot up and, as with any tall perennials, supporting and staking at this early stage will protect them from collapsing in rain and wind. A quick hoe round the roots removing burgeoning weeds, then a thick covering of mulch with a handful of fertilizer, will set them fair for the coming summer and reward you with fine blooms. Prepare to do battle with the slugs and snails, arming yourself with your preferred weapon. I am sticking to wool pellets which serve two purposes, creating a very uncomfortable surface for the pests to march across whilst retaining moisture for the plants which they are guarding. Hostas will be showing some life now, so act quickly. Leave the foliage on faded tulips and daffodils, but remove the dying flowers. I wonder whether you have been keeping and eye out for unusual daffodils as I mentioned last month. One of the rarest which the RHS wish to track down and propagate is Narcissus ‘Mrs R O Backhouse’, a daffodil with white petal-like tepals and a pink trumpet. Sarah Backhouse (1857- 1921), a Quaker plantswoman, created this daffodil. In 1900 one of her bulbs, Sunrise, cost 2 shillings a bulb, the equivalent of £10.75 today. Furthermore, someone offered £171 (£18,383 in today’ money) for 3 of her seedlings of the pink daffodil. In recognition of her work, in 1912 the RHS presented her with the Peter Barr Memorial Cup which is still awarded annually to daffodil breeders. It is time to get ready for summer hanging baskets. Last year I lined one with fern leaves which proved very successful. Perhaps an improvement would be to add a liner which will be disguised and keep the natural effect of the fern leaves while giving greater moisture attention. There is so much to enjoy in the garden in April. The magnolias and camellias are at their best. The bright blues and yellows seem to dominate with the likes of grape hyacinths and daffodils and contrast so well with the acid greens of the euphorbias. The spectrum of colour will expand as the month goes on. ON THE PLOT Rhubarb is one of the easiest crops to grow, and once established and well cared for will provide you with tasty stems for many years. The care requires not much more than a good dump of compost over the roots in winter, and you can stand back and see it flourish from now onwards. Should you wish to pull some earlier in the year, covering it up to remove the light will force it to develop fine, pink stems. An upturned dustbin serves well to eliminate the light, but there are some attractive terracotta rhubarb forcers – but they are expensive! The delicate pink stems are highly prized by chefs who do far more with forced rhubarb than make rhubarb crumble. This does not seem to be an altogether new idea: back in 1817 Dr William Kitchener in his book The Cook’s Oracle included a recipe for rhubarb sauce paired with mackerel! Many varieties of rhubarb exist, and an excellent place to find out more is to go to the Rhubarb Triangle in the Wakefield area. Probably the best rhubarb in the world is grown here underground. It is so prized that the name Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb is legally protected in the UK and Europe alongside the likes of Stilton, Champagne and Parma Ham. For delicate, pink juicy stems Timperley variety is an old favourite, but Poulton’s Pride can be forced, and once uncovered will keep cropping until November! You may have had enough of it by then, and old stems are quite acidy so they can come in handy for cleaning burnt saucepans. I make use of the discarded leaves by laying them on to the paths on the plot as they help to keep the weeds down for a while. Shallots and onion sets need to be planted now in a warm, sunny spot in a rich, composted soil. Keep them well away from nutrient-greedy vegetables such as peas, beans and brassicas. Many things can be sown now, and it is interesting to explore new varieties. The beetroot variety Rainbow Mix will give you many surprises including yellow, orange or red beets, and even a red and white striped beet so you can choose your favourite. My favourite beet is Crapaudine, a rough-skinned variety, cylindrical in shape looking more like a carrot. The list of things ready to sow now is extensive so we need to get down to the hard work. Carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, leeks, peas, spring onions, chard and perpetual spinach are waiting for our attention! Diseases can trouble vegetable and fruit growers, and the worst and most widespread is the honey fungus. This can dramatically damage woody plants causing failure to flower, cracked and bleeding bark, and finally death. Blueberries are becoming more commonly grown as our warmer weather suits them, but they come with their enemy, the blueberry rust. Of the garden pests, slugs, snails, vine weevil, ants, woolly aphid and red spider mite are high up the list, but nowadays the box tree caterpillar tops them all. It arrived in private UK gardens in 2007, but is now widespread. Together with the fungal box tree blight the devastation of the once familiar box hedge edged paths and topiary are under extreme threat. It is best to choose and alternative shrub. Happy Gardening, Sarah x
The Last Word FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife and Mum to two teenagers! Ready for Easter! Is it just me or have the last few months gone by in a flash? Honestly, it’s been like a whirlwind. I’ve been helping clients get media coverage, teaching business owners how to get themselves into the press, conducting interviews, writing case studies and squeezing in a couple of presentation and media‑training sessions too. Add to that, I run a couple of Slimming World groups - which I absolutely love - supporting my members as they lose weight, feel great and increase their health and fitness at the same time… and, well, it’s been full‑on! What I’m not very good at is taking time out for myself. I’m forever encouraging other people to slow down, breathe, rest and recharge, yet I’m the first one to ignore my own advice! So the Easter bank holidays are looking very appealing right now. A few days to chill out, potter about, maybe eat a bit of chocolate (!) and just enjoy some time off with my family. Bliss. Getting the garden sorted In fact, while I’m pottering about, we really need to tackle the garden. Yes, the weather has improved a bit recently, but after all that rain earlier in the year, we’ve done absolutely nothing out there - and it shows. Let’s just say it’s not looking its best. A proper tidy‑up is definitely on the cards. I’m also determined to grow some vegetables this year. I’ve already got my little herb patch, although judging by the sorry state of it when I peered out the window this morning, I’m not convinced much has survived. learly, more planting is required! Basically, I love being in a beautiful garden, I’m just not a natural gardener. But I am very much looking forward to the moment it’s all looking lovely again and we can fire up the pizza oven. Now that’s the kind of gardening motivation I understand! Spring has properly arrived Talking about motivation, now that the clocks have gone forward, the days are so much brighter, aren’t they? It’s amazing how that little bit of extra daylight gives you such a lift. I love it! I get more energy and a more “right, let’s get things done” kind of attitude. Even the simplest of jobs feels easier when you’re not doing them in the gloom and dark. A bit of sunshine and those longer evenings – all of a sudden, everything just seems that little bit more possible. Don’t you think? Have a wonderful April everyone.
