Local News 4 East Riding of Yorkshire Council wins gold award for supporting the Armed Forces East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been granted the Gold Award for the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. The scheme encourages and celebrates employers who support the Armed Forces community and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant. Councillor Anne Handley, Leader of the Council said “We are incredibly proud to receive the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award. This honour reflects our unwavering commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community and recognising the positive impact they have on our workforce and local area.” The council has won the highest level of award - gold - due to its work as an employer and as an advocate. As an employer, the Council has many policies to support active and former members of the Armed Forces. This includes 10 days paid leave, with additional unpaid leave, for Reservist & Cadet Force Volunteers to fulfil training obligations. Council job vacancies are advertised on the Ministry of Defences’ career transition partnership website. There is training for council staff to promote an enhanced understanding and appreciation of the Armed Forces Community, and information about the Covenant is incorporated into induction for new employees. The council has also supported the Armed Forces community through nominated staff who act as Armed Forces Champions and has a supportive Armed Forces staff network. Alan Menzies, Chief Executive said “Achieving the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award is a significant milestone for us. Supporting members of the East Riding Armed Forces community, whether serving, veterans, or reservists and their families, and recognising the valuable skills and experiences they bring to the area, is incredibly important.” The council also obtained the award due to its work with other partner organisations to improve the support available in the East Riding. This includes encouraging other local employers to sign the Covenant and recognise the skills and experience that veterans and reservists can bring to an organisation. The Council has helped advocate and raise awareness of support for the local Armed Forces community. This has been done through regular communication campaigns and the development of webpages to signpost those in need of help and guidance. It also works in partnership with a wide range of local organisations to support delivery of the East Riding Community Covenant Delivery Group Action Plan. East Riding council has also set up a grants programme which provides funding for local projects by partner organisations, to support the Armed Forces community. Councillor Liam Dealtry, Armed Forces Member Champion said “I am delighted that the Council has achieved this fantastic award. It’s a reflection of how much work continues to be undertaken to support local veterans, reservists, those still serving and their families, both by Council staff and our partner organisations. The award demonstrates our continued commitment to working together with our partners to prevent disadvantage and provide quality services for our local Armed Forces community.” To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk

These days most homeown- ers suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where York- shire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the oppor- tunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Warren Ingleson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served trades- men so our customers are assured of the best job. Integ- rity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our busi- ness relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply would- n’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Warren on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft! YOUR POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER JONATHAN EVISON I am delighted to have been re-elected as your Police and Crime Commissioner. Over the past 3 years, we have been working hard to increase feelings of safety and improve public confidence in policing, but the work can not stop there. My priorities going into the next 4 years will be to ensure there is more visible policing and more initiatives to tackle drugs and anti-social behaviour. We are continuing to develop fair policing to help tackle rural, coastal and urban crime. We will be introducing more new technology to help make our roads safer and reduce causalities. We will continue to maintain strong support for victims of crime and increase the work to end violence against women and girls. My office has received £65,000 from the Department for Transport (DfT) for a pioneering road safety project called Operation Journey. We have purchased 350 dash cams for use by regular road network users who are willing to help us make the roads safer through uploading and identifying bad driver behaviour. Anyone with a dash cam can upload footage by visiting Humberside Police’s website and clicking on Dash Cam Reporting. If you would like to have the opportunity to apply for a dash cam, please sign up to My Community Alert where we will be announcing future rounds. 8 Literature Bad Summer People By Emma Rosenblum Emma Rosenblum’s debut novel stormed onto the scene last year, and was seen on sun loungers everywhere. Rightfully so, as this smart tale scratches the veneer of an exclusive summer haven and its elite holidaymakers to reveal the lies, cheating and murderous intent lying just under the surface. Outsiders aren’t welcome in this paradise – well, except a handsome tennis coach – so when a body is discovered under the boardwalk, the community can only look inwards for the perpetrator. Long Island By Colm Tóibín Long Island is the sequel to Colm Tóibín’s Brooklyn. Set in the 1950s, and spanning both sides of the Atlantic, Brooklyn told the story of Eilis Fiorello, an Irish immigrant who leaves her family behind in search of a better life. She falls in love with an Italian who promises her the world, but her world is shaken with news from home. Long Island follows on from this, with Eilis now 20 years into her marriage, with two children. A man with an Irish accent shows up to disrupt her white-picket dream, making her question the foundations of her new life in the States and turn her thoughts back to Ireland. Did she make a mistake? And can we ever really go home again? Bellies By Nicola Dinan Hong Kong-born, London- based transgender author Nicola Dinan is a connoisseur of the liminal. Her debut novel, Bellies, is a sparkling tale of an evolving queer relationship. When Tom and Ming meet September Reads on a night out, they hook up and fall hard. Soon, they are planning to build a life together. Narrated from both perspectives, Bellies documents their metamorphosis as a couple and individuals, exploring how much you have to sacrifice to become who you want to be. It is a tender tale, dealing with the complexities of transitioning while in a relationship and, indeed, of growing up, with compassion and insight. Butter By Asako Yuzuki This Japanese novel has become a cult phenomenon. Compelling, freaky and unsettling, it tells the story of a famed female chef convicted as a serial killer of lonely white-collar businessmen. She is said to have lured them to their deaths with her extraordinary cooking, despite being unconventionally attractive. A tenacious journalist wishes to learn her secrets to a good beef stew, so the two begin a correspondence. Butter offers searing insight into misogyny, obsession and human connection, addressing societal fatphobia by tackling the question, ‘Can a femme fatale really be fat?’ You’ll devour this one whole. Wild Love By Elsie Silver Hot young billionaire Ford Grant is the world’s most eligible bachelor when he finds himself face-to- face with a young girl claiming he’s her biological father. Suddenly, between parenting a sullen 12-year- old and desperately trying to keep his hands off his best friend’s sister Rosie, Ford is stretched thin. And when the verbal sparring becomes flirty, something has to break. A classic tale of star- crossed love and irresistible lust, this book feels like a daydream. All the books in this feature are on sale now or are available to order at W H Smith. To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk

Gardening 12 To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk Think bulbs! The distinctive varieties often sell out very quickly, so get ahead with reserving your selection! Indulge yourself with some sumptuous peony flowered types in flamboyant colours. Delay planting tulips until November for the best results. l Keep your Camellias and Rhododendrons well watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop well. l Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid fertiliser every fortnight. l Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. l Dead-head bedding plants and perennial plants to stop them self- seeding and to encourage further flowering into the autumn. l Dead-head lilies for a better flower display next year. l Trim your lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact. l Cut back faded perennials to keep borders tidy. l As your Penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a leaf to encourage more flowers. l Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves you can harvest before the frost. l Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished blooming. l Prune your Wisteria after flowering by removing all the whippy side-shoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base (about five leaves from the main stem). l Prune climbing roses and rambling roses once they’ve finished flowering (unless they are repeat-flowerers in which case leave them). l Collect ripened seed and store for next year. Leaving some seed heads in place can be attractive and allows the plant to self-seed in the surrounding soil. l Mow wildflower meadows now to help scatter the seeds. l Take cuttings of your favourite tender perennials such as pelargoniums and fuchsia to propagate them for next year. l Finish dividing clumps of Bearded Iris now so they have time to form roots and flowers buds for next year before the cold weather arrives. l Now is a good time to spray ground elder (and other perennial weeds) with a glyphosate-based weedkiller as the plant has lots of leaf surface area with which to absorb it. l Look out for symptoms of Clematis Wilt such as wilting leaves and black discolouration on the leaves and stems of your Clematis. Cut out any infected plant material and dispose of it in your household waste. Looking after your lawn l Don’t worry if your lawn is looking brown, the autumn rains will soon make it green again. l Don’t feed your lawn with a high- nitrogen fertiliser now as this will encourage lots of lush new growth which is easily damaged by autumn weather. Gardening in September Use your own garden as an excuse to spend time with your family and make sure you take time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

14 Fiona’s Word Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. WHAT’S HAPPENING TO OUR SEASONS? Summer comes and goes in the blink of an eye and this year I’m convinced more than ever that the seasons are getting mixed up. It felt like Autumn mid-August, but even earlier in the summer, as soon as the sun went in, the temperature dropped right down. We did have some absolutely gorgeous days, but they were few and far between. I was talking to a lady at my church this morning (at the time of writing) and she said she’s been counting this year and out of 60 summer days, we’ve only had 21 sunny ones. I’m hoping it doesn’ t mean we get a long, hard winter. It’s the rain that makes me miserable, though – and, let’s face it, we had a lot of rain this year. I also don’t want to put the heating on too early, especially with the energy cap rising 10% next month. But that’s another subject – how to keep warm over winter. I’ll look at that next month. LOVING MY CROCHET! Since I started to learn crochet last year, with the help of my fab friend Helen, I have made three granny square blankets (big enough to cover double beds), which I’ve given to family as presents. I’ve also made two bucket hats (for wearing at Leeds festival) and yesterday I made my first ever crocheted coaster! I am so chuffed with myself. It’s a brilliant hobby and I’m loving it. My next project is Christmas, so I’m looking for Christmas crochet ideas. I’m thinking tree decorations, garlands, stockings and maybe even a wreath! I also fancy trying to make a cardigan, but I’m not sure how to do that yet. Do you crochet? If you’ve got any ideas, let me know! If you don’t, I really recommend learning. Did you know, it’s also great for your mental health. It reduces stress and anxiety, improves our well- being and improves focus and concentration. I call that a win-win! LET’S GO FLY A KITE….. Is everyone else getting Mary Poppins vibes?!! Just because the summer holidays are over, it doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to do!! I’m looking forward to the Filey Kite Festival on the 21st and 22nd September. It attracts some the UK’s best kite flyers and we always get to see some absolutely amazing kites, like clownfish, huge pandas, snakes, a giant octopus, a giant teddy and so many more, all flying in the skies above the Yorkshire coast. I can’t wait to see what this year brings! The festival is also partnering with the Filey Food and Drink Festival so the very best of Yorkshire food and drink will be available too! Yum! Whatever your plans are for September, have a fantastic month! If you’re going back to school, college or university, good luck with your first few weeks. You’ll be back in the swing of things before you know it.
