Dear Readers, Welcome to the September edition of your DNfourteen Magazine. At the time of writing the weather is a real mixed bag of hot, mild or raining - so a typical English summer - what did you expect? In our Gardening Feature, Ian Ashbridge tells us about his greenhouses and imparts other interesting green fingered advice to help us all get the most from our gardens. We have all the ‘usual suspects’ advertising in this feature to help both novice and keen amateurs get the best blooming gardens in the street! DNfourteen: Local News 4 To contact please Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • Telephone: 01964 552 470 Goole 36 Local MP Andrew Percy visited the Goole 36 development site off Rawcliffe Road, Goole, recently for an update meeting on plans to bring thousands of jobs to the site. Andrew also had the opportunity to see the construction of the link road which has been made possible thanks to millions of pounds of funding from the Government. Andrew met with the Homes and Community Agency, the Government agency responsible for the site, and DTZ Ltd who are responsible for marketing the site. Progress on the construction of the road is going well with completion due at the end of the year. Andrew reports, “I have been involved in this project since my election in 2010, helping to unblock many of the hurdles that we have come along the way. For years Goole people were promised this development and jobs but little happened. Now we have real progress. I was keen to meet with the HCA and DTZ Ltd to discuss what progress is being made to attract companies to the site. I am especially keen that future development here has a broad range of jobs, including higher skilled jobs. I’ve offered my full support to the team pushing this site, especially ensuring that the Humber LEP prioritize it for renewable jobs. Interest in the site is strong but obviously, until an investor signs on the dotted line nothing can be announced. This development has the real opportunity to change the face of the area, bringing thousands of jobs and giving a real boost to the local economy. The HCA have done a great job pushing the development forward. 6 Please Like: DNfourteen-Magazine on Home Trends Celebrating the Pre-loved Home By Paula Duggan (Vintage home enthusiast & dealer) I grew up with an older generation that regarded buying anything other than new shameful. Thankfully attitudes have changed since then and with its green credentials, the taboo associated with second-hand, pre-loved, vintage, call it whatever you like, has all but vanished. Looking to the past to furnish your home is not only a fun way to shop but also can make economical sense. Antiques, considered the most glamorous form of recycling there is, have already stood the test of time and are likely to survive for many more centuries to come, making them a sound investment and something to pass down the generations. In many cases it is still possible to pick up a unique piece for the same price as modern flat-pack furniture. Most antique and vintage furnishings tend to be brown but that doesn’t mean that they have to stay brown! Chalk paints are widely available in a rainbow of colours and are easy to use, with most pieces just needing the one coat to bring them into the 21st century. Similarly, handles can be changed and upholstery replaced to blend with contemporary themes. If you are looking for something that bit more rustic or glamorous then consider the increasingly popular industrial style where pieces are salvaged from long closed factories, schools and fair grounds. These places turn up show stoppers, often with titanic proportions, which blend surprisingly easily into modern environments. Lighting, mirrors, desks, seating and dining tables with highly polished metal surfaces combined with worn wooden surfaces provide a stylish alternative to the more traditional home furnishings. Recycled Pertamina Oil Drums from Indonesia If you just want to add a splash of character then try using post war British ceramics, glass and textiles by well known designers from this time. Textiles in particular are highly versatile and can be bought on a budget and transformed into wall art or cushions; small changes that can give an instant make over to any room. Have you installed solar panels on your home, or perhaps a wood burning stove or a heat pump? If you have had anything fitted to your home to lower bills and make it more eco-friendly, then it could possibly become a Green Open Home. The Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRCC), working with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, are looking for green residents to take part in a series of events this autumn. Called Green Open Home, the events work in a similar way to open gardens, where householders who have installed low-carbon measures, open their doors on a given day to interested members of the public and share their experience. Similar events have been very successful in other parts of the country and have inspired many of the people that have visited the properties to go on and install measures as well. “People that have made green improvements to their home are in the best position to tell others about the benefits of doing the work but can also warn of any issues they found with the process,” said Peter Hirschfeld, energy advice officer from Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council. “We plan to hold around 10 events in total and we are hoping to get a good mix of different types of technologies to see.” Councillor Symon Fraser, cabinet portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment, said: “The council is pleased to be working in partnership with HWRCC on this project and would encourage any resident who has had green technology installed and would like to talk about their experience to volunteer as a Green Open Home. “Low-carbon, eco-friendly and cost-effective green technology is becoming a key part of meeting energy needs and of course it also saves people money on their energy bills. Accessing local advice will help residents make an informed decision on what would be suitable for their home.” Training and support will be provided to all households volunteering to hold an event. get to decide what that story means. This morning, as I was about to hop into the shower, I just so happened to glance in the mirror. I’m not sure why or what drew my attention, but my eyes were drawn to my breasts, and I suddenly noticed something I hadn’t seen before–stretch marks! Stretch marks aren’t new to me by any means. I have them on my legs, butt, and hips. I’ve had some since I was a teenager and others occurred during my pregnancy 9 years ago. But these little guys…they caught me by surprise. It’s possible they’ve been around for ages and I had simply never noticed them, but either way, this was the first I’d seen of them. So in an effort to demystify this situation, I figured I should question the person who probably looks at my body even more than I do: my husband. I walked into John’s office, stark naked, shower cap on my head (I mean, let’s be honest, I don’t often wash my hair) and asked, “Have you seen these before?” John replied (quite nonchalantly, I might add) that he hadn’t. I said, rather perplexed, that neither had I. And then do you know what I did? I got in the shower and moved on with my life.

It’s All About You Please Like: DNfourteen-Magazine on 13 Because here’s the deal: I have stretch marks. I have cellulite. I have “imperfections.” I also have a strong, capable body that can do pull-ups in the double digits and deadlift 2x my bodyweight on command. I honour my body. I never take movement for granted. I am a powerful woman whose body is made from (among other things) skin, muscle, and fat–things that can and will sometimes change with the natural flow of life. I’ve weighed 115 pounds (while in the British Army on basic training), 175 pounds (the day I had my son), 130 pounds (today!) and everywhere in between. My body has experienced changes. My body has been through 27 hours of childbirth, 2 hours of pushing, and 12 months of breast feeding. I have brought a human into this world. He is compassionate, empathic, loyal, funny, curious and kind. He makes me laugh and gives me a reason to embody strength. He is proud to have a strong mum, and is actually the one to whom the credit for the “Inner Strength” motto goes to.

Will it be a sad story, the kind where I feel sorry for myself, nit picking at every little detail and feeling less than worthy because of a few flaws? Or is it a powerful story, a story of nurturing, growth, discovery and the multitude of things this body has accomplished over the years? The only person who gets to tell that story is me. In the past, I’ve hated my body into hiding. I’ve allowed self-loathing and feelings of unworthiness to dictate my path, and I’ve let shame back me into a dark corner. I’ve striven for perfection and even I’ve been mean to my beautiful body and treated it like it just wasn’t good enough. That didn’t serve me well at all. That’s not the story I want to tell. The story I want to tell is far more meaningful than that. My story is filled with love, learning, laughter, and tears. My story is powerful and uniquely mine. It’s the story of a mother, a wife, a friend, a ex-soldier, a colleague, and a woman imbued with radiant strength and positivity. My story is about freedom. Freedom from shaming my form, freedom from hating my body into leanness, freedom from societal constructs of what a woman “should” be. I have the Freedom to be 100% unapologetic, freedom to be me. East Riding of Yorkshire Council, working with a range of other local organisations, such as NHS East Riding of Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group and East Riding Age UK, has developed a new draft affordable warmth strategy. The new strategy will build on the success of the 2012 strategy and provide a strategic framework for all action in the East Riding on the issue. It recognises the importance of helping residents to insulate their homes, access the cheapest energy available to them and reduce their energy bills. The draft strategy also includes actions to raise awareness of the issue of fuel poverty, particularly in rural communities off mains gas. Living in a cold and damp home can have serious impacts on health and wellbeing. This is especially true for people with an existing health issue, over 65s or children under five-years-old. Respiratory conditions, such as asthma and bronchitis are exacerbated by cold conditions. Other issues include increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Motorists alerted over new ban on smoking in cars to prevent surge in fines Department of Health steps up publicity campaign seven weeks before smoking cigarettes in vehicles carrying under-18s is outlawed Motorists and passengers in England and Wales are being warned they will soon be breaking the law if they smoke in a vehicle carrying a person under 18. From 1 October, they face fixed penalty fines of £50 – with drivers at risk of being fined twice if they have failed to stop a passenger smoking and are smoking themselves. The Department of Health is stepping up publicity to increase awareness of the new rules seven weeks before they are introduced to prevent a surge in fines. The chief medical officer, Dame Sally Davies, said: “Chil- dren breathe faster than adults so they are much more exposed to the dangers of second-hand smoke. Their airways, lungs and immune systems are still developing so are much more at risk from harm. “We want children to grow up free from harm and we need parents to understand why smoking in vehicles is so dangerous. 80% of smoke is invisible so even if you think you are being careful you cannot see where the smoke is going.” Jane Ellison, a health minister, said: “Research has shown that around a third of children who are exposed to smoke in vehicles don’t feel able to ask the person to stop because they feel frightened or embarrassed. PARENTS CAN NOW APPLY FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT QUICKER AND EASIER ONLINE All the information students and parents need about local school transport can now be found in one place – thanks to the launch of a new webpage. The page on East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s website www. eastriding.gov.uk/ schoolstransport has been redesigned and updated for the summer holidays to make it quicker and easier to access school transport information for people whose children are starting school or changing school in September. Parents are now being encouraged to visit the webpage to make sure they apply for school travel passes in plenty of time for the start of the new term. The site also has useful information for people with children already travelling to school, such as bus routes and times. Using the new website, people can: • Find out if their child is entitled to a free travel pass. • Apply for a school or college travel pass for their child by completing an online form. • Buy a travel pass by applying online. • Apply for a replacement bus pass if theirs is lost, damaged or if their child has changed schools or moved address. • View all bus routes for schools in the county, useful for parents to see which route would be the best one for their child. • Report any problems on school transport, such as damage and bullying, to the council’s Buswise scheme that deals with misconduct on school transport. • Or just to send an online enquiry to the council’s school transport team. Councillor Andy Burton, the council’s portfolio holder for plan- ning, highways and transportation, said: “The summer holidays can be a busy time for any mums and dads preparing to send their children to a new school, and school transport is one of the important jobs they need to arrange early. “So we hope parents find the webpage useful in answering any questions they have, and allowing them to make applications quickly and easily.”

House & Garden 5 30 Please mention when responding to advertisers. Thank you. In the Greenhouse Greenhouses are the engine rooms of gardens. I have two: both six-by-eights, or in modern parlance 1.8m x 2.4m. Aluminium, pretty bog standard, and I love them both. Neither cost me much: I just kept an eye on the small ads in the local paper (Freecycle is another happy hunting ground). The first cost me £30 as long as I came along with a willing husband to dismantle it; the second came free with the house, though it was in a bit of a state so I’ve had to move it, dig up the crappy gravel-and-plastic- bags floor and replace most of the glass. It’s still not enough: under Percy Thrower’s Law, which states that whatever size greenhouse you have it will always be too small, I am now hatching plans to acquire one of those temporary pop-up greenhouses so I can evict my seedling trays when it’s time to put the tomatoes in the ground, as this year things have really gone wrong on the tomato front following a traffic jam on the seedling benches in greenhouse no. 1. But failing a third greenhouse – and if I get one it’ll be a polytunnel – I have to manage with what I’ve got. Here she is: the ‘main’ greenhouse, by which I mean the one that’s successful. Cucumbers groaning under the strain of all the fruit on the right; also in here are aubergines, peppers and tomatilloes at the back. But this month has been all about drying onions. It’s been a good onion year: sun plus a spot or two of rain and mine are about as enormous as they’ve ever been. I have perennial onion bulbils, a rather pathetic

My prize specimens have been my ‘Stuttgarter Giant’ - a sort of beginner’s show onion. Not quite as large as, say, ‘Bedfordshire Champion’ or ‘Ailsa Craig’ but satisfyingly eyecatching nonetheless: around 15cm across each, with a handsomely flattened, golden-skinned bulb. Top left: perennial onion bulbils. Top right and bottom left: ‘Stuttgarter’ onions. Bottom right: ‘Golden Gourmet’ shallots (a bit feeble and certainly not as good as the ‘Picasso’) Actually though I’m inordinately proud of them, large onions aren’t terribly practical in the kitchen. If you’re cooking a recipe which calls for two onions, you’re fine: just use one of your big ‘uns. But normally you just want one, medium-sized onion, and large ones like these have little to do with moderation. You end up with fridge salad compartment syndrome: when you get half an onion mouldering away in your salad compartment and by the time you find it again it’s much too late. So I might just go for a smaller variety next year. On my must-try-again list are the ‘Picasso’ shallots I grew for the first time this year: wonderful big, fat things, almost as good as the ‘Hative de Niort’ ones I grew a few years ago (and that is high praise indeed coming from a Francophile like me). The only real disappointment has been the ‘Electric‘ autumn-sown onions. We have eaten them all now: but they were a disappointing pale pink instead of the deep red I had hoped for. I shall not be planting them again: instead I’m including one of the good red maincrops in next year’s planting, something like ‘Red Baron’, maybe. Howden 01430 430624 These are the ‘Picasso’ shallots: the size of small onions and beautifully plump To grow the really sweet red onions, like the Italian ‘Rossa Savonese’ or ‘Red Brunswick’, you’ll have to sow from seed: more patience than I’ve got, but I might yet be converted (we really like red onions). I bring them in around now, once the stems have collapsed into a brownish heap on the ground. They won’t be doing any more growing so you may as well dig them up: ideally, loosen the roots a couple of days in advance, just so they stop sucking up moisture and start to go into a state of suspended animation. If it’s reliably sunny for two weeks after lifting them you can dry them on the surface of the soil: this is a bit of a pipe dream in the UK, so best just to get on with stacking them one layer thick in trays to dry. Mushroom trays are fine; you can also lay them on pallets as long as the gaps aren’t too wide. Bring them into the greenhouse for two weeks of irritation as you tiptoe over them where they’re blocking your pathways, not forgetting to turn them every day or two so they’re evenly dried. Once your fortnight is up, you can take them inside and string them into long plaits to hang in your spare room or corridor (kitchens are a little damp, though our onions get used so quickly you can just about get away with it). SUNDAY DINNERS - A THING OF THE PAST? Well I hope not! I don’t know if any of you have ever watched the American crime drama Blue Bloods. I must say it’s one of my favourites. It stars Tom Selleck as New York’s chief of police and patriarch of the Reagan clan, a multi generational family of cops. Anyway, as well as some great storylines, during every episode the family sits down for Sunday dinner. What I like so much about this is that Sunday dinner is something that many people don’t take time for anymore. For many Sunday is simply another day of the week, just an extra day to go shopping. I know that a lot of people work weekends, but the concept of sitting down together as a family any day of the week is being lost – and it’s a crying shame. It’s a time when you can catch up with each other, check that everyone’s OK and enjoy time together. I know it’s an important time in our house and even if we can’t have it at lunchtime we make time to have a later dinner. So if you and your family haven’t sat down to dinner together for a while, make the effort! And if you do the cooking, make someone else wash up! I knew there was something I was doing wrong!!!!
