I am really looking forward to seeing lots of you at Howden Vintage Day on the 2nd May. We have a pair of Keifer Sutherland tickets up for grabs on page 4 for his upcoming gig at the O2 Arena in Leeds. We have a fantastic little recipe for Black Bean Shakshuka for you to try on page 8 - I had never heard of this before and tried it last weekend with taco’s for my hubby and grandchildren whilst they watched Leeds United v Wolves on the telly - and they all said they’ll have it again for the FA Cup semi-final match! We have got the Motoring column back this month - where Elliot looks at the new Skoda Hot Hatch. For all you people that love Gardening please check out the regular feature on page 12 that has great advice on what you need to be doing this month in your garden. Finally we finish, as always, with Fiona Dwyer and her wise observations on life. These days most homeown- ers suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where York- shire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the oppor- tunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Warren Ingleson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served trades- men so our customers are assured of the best job. Integ- rity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our busi- ness relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply would- n’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Warren on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft! 6 Literature A Far-Flung Life by M. L. Stedman Bestselling author M. L. Stedman (The Light Between Oceans) delivers A Far Flung Life, a sweeping, evocative novel that spans continents and generations. With her gift for atmospheric storytelling and richly drawn characters, Stedman examines love, loss and the enduring hope that carries us through life’s greatest distances. Broken Country by Claire Leslie Hall Claire Leslie Hall explores the landscapes of trauma, healing and belonging. Hall’s evocative prose and emotional depth bring to life a story of personal and cultural fracture, as characters attempt to rebuild themselves amid societal pressures and internal conflict. Hooked by Asako Yuzuki From acclaimed Japanese author Asako Yuzuki (Butter), Hooked promises a gripping, page turning story that blends cultural insight with psychological tension. Yuzuki’s work often focuses on compelling female protagonists and the societal pressures they navigate, making Hooked a must read for fans of smart, twisty fiction. A Hymn To Life by Gisèle Pelicot You would be hard-pressed to meet someone who hasn’t heard of Gisèle Pelicot. At the centre of a landmark sexual assault case that dominated headlines, she showed May Books remarkable strength by stepping forward and waiving her anonymity. In A Hymn To Life, Pelicot offers a lyrical and uplifting exploration of resilience, purpose and the celebration of everyday beauty. Blending personal reflection with philosophical insight, her book invites readers to discover meaning and joy even in the face of life’s challenges. Enough by Dawn French Beloved comedian and writer Dawn French brings her trademark humour and heartfelt wisdom to Enough, a memoir essays hybrid that examines life, ageing, identity and acceptance. French’s candid voice is both laugh out loud funny and deeply moving, offering reflections on what it means to feel ‘enough’ in a world that constantly demands more. The Midnight Train by Matt Haig Renowned for The Midnight Library, Matt Haig returns with another inventive and philosophical novel. The Midnight Train reimagines life’s possibilities through whimsical storytelling that explores choice, regret and the unseen paths not taken. Haig’s work often blends humour with deep emotional truths, making complex questions about existence approach-able and poignant. Departure(s) by Julian Barnes Julian Barnes, one of contemporary literature’s most refined voices, returns with Departure(s), a novel that meditates on life’s transitions. Through elegant, layered prose, Barnes explores ageing, loss and how our choices ripple outward. His work often interrogates memory and identity with philosophical nuance and quiet humour. 8 Recipe SERVES 4 PREP 10 mins COOK 40 mins • EASY V INGREDIENTS 1 large onion 2 peppers 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 2 garlic cloves 2 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp dried oregano 1-2 tsp chipotle paste, to taste 400g can chopped tomatoes 400g can black beans, drained and rinsed 4 eggs fresh coriander leaves METHOD 1 Finely slice the onion and deseed and slice the peppers, then heat a wide, deep frying pan over a medium heat and pour in a good glug of olive oil. Scatter in the onion and peppers along with a pinch of salt and the cumin seeds. Cook gently for 8-10 mins, stirring every now and then, until soft and starting to colour. Grate the garlic and add that, then sprinkle over the paprika, oregano and stir in the chipotle paste. Stir for a minute or two until fragrant and the paste is toasted. 2 Tip in the tomatoes and black beans, season with a little more salt and pepper, then bring to a gentle simmer. Leave to bubble gently, uncovered, for 15-20 mins, stirring occasionally, until thick. Use the back of a spoon to make four little hollows in the sauce. Crack an egg into each Black bean shakshuka one, season the eggs lightly, then cover the pan with a lid and cook gently for 5-6 mins or until the whites are just set but the yolks are still soft. Take the pan to the table and finish with coriander scattered over the top. Serve with warm tortillas, sliced avocado or guacamole, soured cream or thick yogurt, lime wedges for squeezing over and hot sauce on the side so everyone can build their own plate. • Get ahead You can make the pepper, tomato and bean base up to two days ahead. Leave to cool, then cover and chill. Reheat gently in the pan, adding a splash of water if it’s thickened too much, then crack in the eggs, cook and serve. • Make it Vegan Without the eggs you have a really quick vegan chilli that you can use to fill burritos or tacos. 10 A lot of small changes bring out the ‘Hot Hatch’ in Skoda’s supermini Yipee! I find myself on some roads that are much more interesting than many in this part of Spain, with some challenging bends and very little traffic. As long as I am wary of the hard-to-spot surface imperfections, and the alarmingly narrow bridges, I should be in for a good time in the Skoda Fabia 130. It’s a new car, but one very firmly in an old tradition. You need to get the turbocharged 1.5 TSI Evo2 four-cylinder beyond 3000rpm to appreciate the extra urge over the regular motor. Software changes have lifted peak power from 148bhp to a more serious 175bhp (and it’s been beefed up accordingly), and there are tweaks to the standard seven speed dual-clutch gearbox to make it keener and quicker to shift. Sadly, the twin tailpipes don’t provide a rousing hot-hatch soundtrack. In fact, the engine sounds rather pained in the upper reaches of the rev range. A 0-62mph time of 7.4 seconds would be nothing to write home about in a family EV these days, but it’s good for a warm hatch – that often overlooked sub-category, one notch below full-on hot hatches, but often better suited to daily use. The Fabia 130 (named to mark Skoda’s 130th anniversary) is a warmed-up version of the sporty Monte Carlo trim, rather than a hot vRS in disguise. It gets the Monte Carlo’s 15mm lower sports suspension and racier bucket seats, 18-inch wheels, black detailing, some 130 badges, plus a bigger front splitter and rear spoiler that work together to actually reduce lift. Those small changes add appreciably more verve to the Fabia experience. Retuned electric power-assisted steering seems to have gained a little more road feel, and now has a well-judged responsiveness that makes the Fabia feel agile, not nervous. Stickier Continental rubber is fitted. In fact, it’s time to flick the stability control into Sport mode (not an option on any other Fabia) and poke it with a stick. Tonk into a corner at speed and lift off the gas, and you can feel the chassis rotate a few degrees under you to help tuck the nose in. (And the handbrake is very effective on gravel, rally- style.) Pleasingly, the sports suspension still has enough compliance to round off imperfections, be they in town or on rural roads, and it has a grown-up, solid feel on the motorway. It’s a lot less spine- jarring than, say, a current Mini JCW. Being a Skoda, it remains exceptionally practical. Space in the back is impressive for a supermini, the boot is big, and you even get physical controls for the heating. So, what’s the rub? At a fiver short of £30,000, it’s a lot of money for a warmed up supermini, and more costly than the quicker Mini Cooper S five-door. But with the Fiesta dead and so many rivals failing to offer hotted-up hatches of any sort, the Fabia 130 should be celebrated. Now, imagine what the same team could do with a vRS.

Women of Achievement Awards - it’s launch time! It’s the official launch of the Women of Achievement Awards this month — and I’m genuinely thrilled to be compering the event again this year. I’ve been lucky enough to do it since 2010, and it never loses its magic. It’s one of the most uplifting dates in the business calendar: the stories, the strength, the humour, the grit… every single time, I come away feeling proud of our region and the women who make it shine. So now’s the time to start thinking about who you might like to nominate. If you know a woman who deserves recognition, we’d love to hear about her. And if that woman is you, don’t be shy -put yourself forward! We’ll be sharing more details at the launch event, including this year’s incredible celebrity guest speaker and our chosen charity. Keep an eye on the Women in Business Hull social media pages for all the updates. I can’t wait to see you there. Less clutter, more calm! I’m on a mission at the moment to clear some space at home. Honestly, where does all the “stuff” come from? It’s never ending. I mean I’ve always been someone who keeps things because they’re “still good quality” or “might come in handy”, but lately I’ve been much better at letting things go – partly due to Marie Kondo. I’ve spoken about her before in my column and her way of decluttering. It’s so simple. When you’re going through everything ask yourself: “Does it spark joy?” It works with anything. If it doesn’t, out it goes. But more ‘stuff’ keeps appearing!! I guess that’s life, but it can be a bit stressful! So, I’m taking it one drawer, one cupboard, one shelf at a time - because doing it all at once is a bit overwhelming! But every time a bag leaves the house, I feel brilliant. Much lighter, much calmer, less stressed. Clearing space really does clear your head too. It’s becoming my new priority. My favourite month of the year I love May. I know I’ve said it before, but it really is my favourite month. It’s my birthday, our wedding anniversary (pictured above) and ..... we get two bank holidays! Honestly, it’s got everything going for it. We’ve got longer days, lighter evenings, the blossoms are out, summer’s on its way…. it just makes me happy. This year, we’re celebrating our 23rd wedding anniversary. I can remember it like yesterday! It’s funny how some moments stay so clear in your mind- the people, the laughter, the little details you thought you’d forget. May always brings those memories back to me, in the nicest way (and I always get our wedding album out and look through it!) It’s a month that feels full of good things. Whatever you’re doing this May, I hope you have a wonderful time. Take care – and enjoy! Fiona x Twitter: @fionadwyer • Facebook: Fiona Dwyer PR
