We take a look at ABBA-mania - and our close neighbours at Beverley Minster are hosting their annual Abba concert this November - I have been at the concert for the last four years and it is amazing (I can highly recommend it - and it raises much needed funds for the restoration of the magnificent Minster). We have all the usual Gardening tips on page 12 and so much more. As usual we finish with Fiona Dwyer’s column. Please use the advertisers in the magazine they are all local and offer great services and products and it does make a difference to our local economy. Local News 4 Free compost giveaways return in May Free compost giveaways for East Riding residents are to return in May. East Riding of Yorkshire Council will be handing out 5,000 bags of compost – 60 tonnes – to local residents over nine events between May 13 and 28. As normal, residents are invited to drive along to their nearest giveaway event, where two bags of compost will be placed into their car boots by council staff. The giveaways will start in Pocklington before moving on to Brough/Elloughton, Withernsea, Beverley, Preston, Goole, Hornsea, Carnaby and finish in Driffield. The compost being given away will be entirely made up from the recycled garden and food waste which East Riding residents place in their brown bins. Councillor Paul West, the council’s portfolio holder for environment and transport said: “We’ve been running our compost giveaways for a number of years now and they’ve been as popular as ever. “They are the council’s way of thanking residents across the area for their fantastic, continuing support of our recycling schemes.” All brown bin contents collected in the East Riding get recycled into compost by the Biowise plant in Willerby – where the giveaway compost comes from. Brown bins can be used to recycle grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds, all cooked and uncooked food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, bread, meat, eggshells and small amounts of soups, sauces and gravies. Free compost will be given away at the following events: l Monday 13 May from 5pm - Pocklington, Wolds Gliding Club, Hodsow Lane, YO42 1NP. l Wednesday 22 May from 4pm - Goole, West Park, DN14 6UU. Residents are asked not to queue at the venues beforehand or they may be turned away for safety reasons. The compost is best used as a soil improver. These days most homeown- ers suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where York- shire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the oppor- tunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Warren Ingleson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served trades- men so our customers are assured of the best job. Integ- rity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our busi- ness relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply would- n’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Warren on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft! 6 Music & What’s On To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk Brighton 1974 was the launchpad for the greatest pop group since the Beatles. It also kickstarted a global phenomenon that, half a century on - courtesy of the hit jukebox musical Mamma Mia!, two multi-million dollar blockbuster films and the Abba Voyage “Abbatar” attraction in London – is arguably bigger than it ever was. 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the band’s game changing win and the UK’s deep-seated love-affair with Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Anni-Frid. As Benny’s son Ludvig – one of the architects of Abba Voyage – puts it: “In a strange way, Abba belonged to Britain more than their home country, Sweden.” “We were lucky not winning in 1973,” Andersson said, “because the next year we had Waterloo, and the competition was held in England. That was a big difference to winning something in Azerbaijan or Luxembourg. When you’re in England, it makes ripples.” Certainly before Brighton, they were unknown here in the UK – and we were all rooting for our entry - Olivia Newton-John and Long Live Love. But the UK soon became transfixed by Abba. Within a year, their Eurovision- bounce had propelled the Swedes all the way to another British beach town, Torbay, with Tony Blackburn introducing Abba’s performance of SOS on BBC1’s summer variety show Seaside Special. In January 1976, with Mamma Mia, they knocked Queen’s all-conquering Bohemian Rhapsody off the UK Number One slot. A year after that, on 10 February 1977, Abba played their first concert in the UK, with all 2,397 seats at the Birmingham Odeon sold out in an instant. For the four members of the band, that success was hard- earned. All had individually been making music professionally since the 1960s. By the early 70s they were a foursome comprising two couples (Agnetha and Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid), playing cabaret under the name Festfolk, “which is a pun that can mean either ‘party people’ or ‘engaged people’. They all hated performing “silly cabaret stuff…but this was in 1971 and they had to put food on the table. They thought: ‘We can’t go on like this. Let’s try to write some pop music in English and see what happens.’ ” The result was People Need Love, which became a 1972 hit in Scandinavia, Germany and Holland. They thought, ‘Yeah, we’re on the way to something.’ Abba’s Eurovision success lit the blue touchpaper for 50 years of Abbamania in the UK. Everyone can sing along to their hits: Waterloo, Mamma Mia, SOS, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Money Money Money, Take a Chance on Me, Chiquitita, Gimme Gimme Gimme, The Winner Takes It All. As Ludvig Andersson says, when reflecting on choosing London as the location for the ‘ABBA Voyage’ concert experience, the UK isn’t just where Abbamania began. The UK “is the place that keeps it alive”. Abba fans in East Yorkshire can relive ABBA’s Eurovision success this November when the Abba Reunion Tribute Show returns to Beverley for 2 nights in Beverley Minster. The annual event is a fund raiser for the Minster and sells out every year! ABBA-mania is still going strong 50 Years on

Annie Bot is an exquisitely written, empathetic novel, which asks the question of what it really means to be human. Mrs Quinn’s Rise To Fame by Olivia Ford Do not read this delicious debut novel while hungry as its mouth- watering descriptions of cakes and bakes will send you into a tummy-rumbling decline. At 77, Julia Quinn is good at two things; baking and being married to her husband Bernard. Diva by Daisy Goodwin A glorious, deep dive into the love affair between iconic opera star, Maria Callas, the ultimate diva, and Greek shipping tycoon and richest man in the New books: world, Aristotle Onassis. The In Crowd by Charlotte Vassell A second outing for Detective Caius Beauchamp (my newest book boyfriend) in a quirky and twisty thriller about two seemingly unconnected cold cases. 10 Recipe Frangipane, a classic component of French baking, is a velvety, sweet, filling made of butter, eggs, sugar, almond flour, a bit of all-purpose flour, and a hint of almond extract that gets stirred together into a golden spreadable paste. This smooth nutty cream adds delicious richness and texture when swirled into the almond-scented cake batter, giving an exquisite nutty flavour and tenderness to the crumb. Studded with blueberries and scattered with sliced almonds, this summery loaf is simple yet stunning. Makes: 1 (8½” x 4½”) cake Ingredients Frangipane: ¼ cup (57 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature ½ cup (48 grams) superfine blanched almond flour ¼ cup (50 grams) granulated sugar 2 tablespoons (16 grams) all- purpose flour 1 large egg white (30 grams), room temperature ¼ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon (4 grams) almond extract Batter: ½ cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar 2 large eggs (100 grams), room temperature 1 teaspoon (4 grams) vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon (1 gram) almond extract 1¾ cups (219 grams) plus 1 tablespoon (8 grams) all- purpose flour 1 tablespoon (15 grams) baking powder ½ teaspoon (1.5 grams) salt ½ cup (120 grams) full-fat plain Greek yogurt 1¼ cups (175 grams) fresh blueberries 2 tablespoons (15 grams) sliced almonds Method 1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray an 8½ x 4½ inch loaf pan with baking spray or with flour. Line bottom and all sides of pan with greaseproof paper, letting excess over sides of pan. 2. For frangipane: In a medium bowl, stir butter until creamy. Add almond flour, sugar, all- purpose flour, egg white, salt, and almond extract; stir until well combined. Cover until ready to use. 3. For batter: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter and sugar at medium speed until fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes, stopping to scrape sides of bowl. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until well combined after each addition and stopping to scrape sides of bowl. Beat in extracts just until combined. 4. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1¾ cups (219 grams) all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. With mixer on low speed, gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with yogurt, beginning and ending with flour mixture, beating just until combined after each addition, stopping to scrape sides of bowl. 5. In a small bowl, toss together blueberries and remaining 1 tablespoon (8 grams) all- purpose flour. Fold 1 cup (140 grams) blueberries and frangipane into batter. Spread batter to prepared pan. Tap pan on a kitchen towel-lined counter several times to settle batter. Top with remaining ¼ cup (35 grams) blueberries and sliced almonds. 6. Bake for 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 325°F (170°C), and bake until golden brown, top feels dry and set, and an instant-read thermometer inserted in centre registers 202°F (94°C) to 210°F (99°C), 55 minutes to 1 hour and 5 minutes more, loosely covering with foil to prevent excess browning, if necessary. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes. Remove from pan, and let cool completely on a wire rack. 14 Fiona’s Word Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. Reclaiming space at home Why is there always ‘stuff’ in your house that needs clearing out? It’s a never-ending cycle! I’m currently having such a good clear out of ‘stuff.’ I’m usually one of those people who thinks things in good condition will come in handy one day, but over the last couple of years I’ve become much better at the Marie Kondo way of getting rid of things. She’s all about decluttering being a joyful task rather than a chore, saying: “We should be choosing what we keep – not what we get rid of.” So these days, I look at something and ask myself if it sparks joy in me. If it doesn’t, out it goes (well, usually, I’m not perfect all the time!) What I do know, is that I feel so much happier and more positive when bags and boxes of ‘stuff’ leave the house. As William Morris once said: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Wise words. Yay! It’s May! I love it when May comes around. It is my favourite month, not least because it’s my birthday and my wedding anniversary! The blossom tress are in full bloom and we normally see forget-me-nots too (my favourite flower) although, at the time of writing, I haven’t seen any yet! The days are longer, it’s definitely getting warmer and it’s almost Summer. When the sun shines, I feel happier and more motivated. I bet you do too. Everything seems more possible. And remember, we get two bank holidays this month! What’s not to love? So, I wish you all a very Happy May and hope you enjoy it as much as I plan to! Even Emily Brontë agrees with me! I found this fantastic quote from Emily Brontë which perfectly sums up May! “May is the month of expectation, the month of wishes, the month of hope.” Yes, I love that so much! Scottish poet James Thomson put it like this: “Among the changing months, May stands confest the sweetest, and in fairest colours dressed.” Have a great May everyone!
