6 GARDENING & OUTDOOR LIVING DNfourteen MAY2012 May can be one of the most challenging months of the year in the garden - has winter gone? Is summer on the way? The weather can be so unpredictable and gardeners everywhere can be frustrated. The days maybe warming up as the sun gets higher in the sky but clear nights can give sud- den sharp frosts that can destroy a potential fruit tree crop. Small trees may be protected with fleece and tender plants should be moved or given protection whenever frost is forecast. This year with low rainfall plants may well need watering and a good water butt and watering cans will be necessary - we may get a hosepipe ban in this area so be prepared! Keep plants healthy and they will be less susceptible to pests and diseases. Prepare the ground well for new plants and mulch new plants after watering; keep your garden tidy, remove weeds, and hoe bare ground regularly. Shrubs that died the previous winter may be replaced now and good container grown stock is readily available in good garden centres. “Weed and Feed “the lawn, scarify if neces- sary but don’t cut the grass too short. If moss is a problem make sure your “Feed & Weed” includes “Moss Control”. Prune early flowering shrubs, tie in climbing plants, and give peren- nial plants support where needed. Deadhead spring bulbs, clear out winter bedding and prepare for summer bedding and vegetable plants.Growing your own vegetables is not only fun but they are much better and fresher than any in the supermarket. If you forgot to sow any seed, good garden centres will have plenty of vegetable plants; and not just the bear necessities! Remember, gardening should be a pleasure. The first is for £5000 from LEADER Coast, Wolds, Wetlands & Waterways and the second for £13,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project consists of two parts, the first being the production of a booklet titled “The Marshland Trail” describing a journey through the villages of Swinefleet, Reedness, Whitgift, Ousefleet and Adlingfleet. The second part is the siting of three Interpretation boards along the route, one at Swinefleet, one at Reedness and one at Adlingfleet. On your wedding day you should be yourself, but better. Whether you’re hiring a make-up artist or doing your own make-up, you should be comfortable and happy. I would never force a bride who doesn’t usually wear much make-up to pile it on, and if I’m working with a bride who wears TOWIE-style make-up I wouldn’t persuade her to go natural. It’s important for wedding make-up to last so I would recommend a primer. If you have an oily T-zone, or you’re getting married in humid weather, try an anti-shine primer. I’m seeing more brides in their 40s and over, and recommend a regular primer for them to smooth out fine lines. Eyebrows need definition, but they don’t need to be filled or over-plucked. See a professional to get them shaped; there are brow bars everywhere. Waterproof mascara is another must-have and just a flush of colour on the cheek is best for brides. Your lipstick depends on your photography. If you’re having black and white photos, a nude shade can make your lips disappear so you need to go a shade or two darker than usual. Flash photography can annihilate your blusher and make you look washed out, so take test shots before your wedding day to see what works best.
