The initiative, supported by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, provides designated private areas within businesses, pharmacies, banks, and community organisations where individuals can contact helplines, support services, or loved ones without fear. The scheme is part of the UK SAYS NO MORE campaign, which aims to provide accessible and confidential support for those experiencing domestic abuse. In addition to physical locations, online safe spaces, hosted on organisations’ websites, provide discreet digital support for individuals experiencing domestic abuse. These platforms offer guidance on seeking help without leaving a digital footprint, links to support services for immediate assistance, and information on safety planning and legal rights. The online safe space tool is a discreet and hidden portal, accessible via a button on participating websites, offering essential support without tracking user activity. This initiative is running alongside the existing Ask for Angela initiative, which enables individuals who feel unsafe, threatened, or vulnerable to discreetly seek assistance by asking bar or venue staff for “Angela.” Trained personnel can then intervene by helping the individual leave discreetly, calling a taxi, or alerting authorities if necessary. Additionally, East Riding of Yorkshire Council is a white ribbon-accredited organisation, actively working to raise awareness and challenge harmful attitudes that contribute to gender-based violence. The council’s white ribbon web pages provide resources, training materials, and the latest news to support individuals and organisations in tackling violence against women and girls. Councillor Lyn Healing, Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Protection, stated: “We all have a role to play in supporting victims of domestic abuse and preventing violence against women and girls. It’s fantastic to see local businesses participate in this vital initiative, and we encourage more organisations to

Where You Go, I Will Go by Christina Fonthes Caution, don’t start this book if you want to get an early night. Christina Fonthes’ exhilarating debut follows two British- Congolese women, Mira and Bijoux, whose lives powerfully intersect as they search for meaning, belonging, and redemption within the confines of societal and religious expectations. Fonthes has been mentored by the likes of Bernardine Evaristo and Irenosen Okojie, and it shows. Where You Go, I Will Go is an exquisitely paced story that will linger in your mind long after you finish it. Girl on Girl: How Pop Culture Turned a Generation of Women Against Themselves by Sophie Gilbert If you’re old enough to remember when politicians in the UK took turns wearing t-shirts that read, ‘This is what a feminist looks like’, you’ll no doubt be familiar with how fast the tide can change on women’s rights. In Girl on Girl, the Atlantic journalist Sophie Gilbert explores how popular culture has influenced the backlash against feminism in the past three decades, from the unapologetically punk ‘Riot Grrl’ movement being replaced by the far more palatable ‘Girl Power’ in the ‘90s to the mainstreaming of extreme porn in TV, film, and beauty standards in the present-day. Prepare to be enraged. No One Wants to See Your D*ck by Jess Davies Jess Davies, the woman you are. The presenter, content creator and women’s rights campaigner is a storm with skin – and her first book, No One Wants to See Your D*ck, is a testament to her fearless advocacy for all survivors of male violence. As well as supporting Stop Image-Based New Books for June Abuse campaigns, Davies has been shedding light on the grim underworld of nudify apps, cyberflashing, and deepfake abuse for years. In her first book, Davies draws on her own experience as a survivor of image-based abuse to call for a world where women have full agency over their image. The New Age of Sexism: How the AI Revolution is Reinventing Misogyny by Laura Bates We are lucky to have Laura Bates. In her ninth book, The New Age of Sexism, she explores how artificial intelligence is streamlining – and indeed reinventing – misogyny for the chronically online generation. As ever, Bates gets up close and personal with her subject matter, uploading photos of herself into nudify apps, witnessing a sexual assault first-hand in the metaverse, and even visiting a ‘sex robot brothel’. “Writing this book made me angry,” Bates notes in the final chapter. “I hope that reading it will make you feel angry too.” She’s right, without anger, we can’t hope to make the digital world safer for women. Be sure to lend this book to all the men in your lives when you’ve finished reading it. Bitter Honey by Lolā Ākínmādē Ākínmādē’s much-hyped 3rd novel is finally here. We follow two women, a mother and daughter: Nancy and Tina, the latter as she navigates fame as Sweden’s pop princess entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, across four decades, three continents, and a lifetime of torrid relationships. If you’ve ever wondered what on earth is going through your mum’s head, Bitter Honey is an urgent call for empathy, grace and understanding. 6 Literature To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk

8 Food & Drink To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk TURKISH SPICED CHICKEN 3 cloves garlic, crushed ¼ medium brown onion, finely grated on a microplane 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt ½ teaspoon each of: smoked paprika, ground cumin, ground turmeric and ground coriander ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon 4 skinless, boneless chicken thighs (about 700 grams) WARM TOMATO DRESSING 3 medium, ripe tomatoes (about 325 grams) 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 teaspoons white sugar 1½ teaspoons rose harissa paste 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil ½ teaspoon each chilli flakes and smoked paprika TO COOK AND ASSEMBLE oil for cooking ½ medium red onion, thinly sliced juice of ½ lemon (about 2 tablespoons juice) ½ teaspoon flaky sea salt ½ cup Greek natural yoghurt TO GARNISH 2 tablespoons toasted pine nuts ½ cup fresh mint leaves ¼ cup fresh dill fronds METHOD: In a medium bowl, stir together the garlic, onion, sugar, salt and spices. Add the chicken and toss together until the chicken is evenly coated. Set aside to marinate until ready to cook. WARM TOMATO DRESSING: Grate the tomatoes on the coarse side of a box grater into a bowl, discarding the skin that gets left behind. Add the garlic, sugar, harissa and salt and set aside. Add the olive oil to a small pot and place over a medium heat. Heat the oil until it is very hot but not smoking, then remove from heat and stir through the spices. Pour the hot spiced oil over the tomato mixture and mix to combine. Season to taste with salt. Set aside. TO COOK: Heat a generous drizzle of oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the chicken to the pan in a single layer and cook for about 6–7 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Set aside to rest on a plate for 5–10 minutes, before slicing thickly. TO ASSEMBLE: Add the onion, lemon juice and salt to a small bowl, toss together and set aside to pickle for 10 minutes. Add the yoghurt to a small bowl and season lightly with salt. Pour the tomato dressing onto a large serving plate (use a plate or platter with high sides, so the dressing doesn’t spill). Arrange the sliced chicken on top of the tomato dressing, then dollop over the yoghurt. TO GARNISH: Top with the red onion, pine nuts and herbs. SERVES 4 CHEF’S NOTE: If you like, you can gently reheat the tomato dressing in a small saucepan over a low heat, just before serving. Turkish-spiced Chicken with Warm Tomato Dressing

Gardening 12 To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk Not every garden can enjoy full sun and some get less light and suffer from damp, but don’t despair! We reveal the plants that are happy in damp conditions. In these climate-changing times, we have to cope with extremes of wetter winters, heavier rainfall and storms, as well as warmer, drier temperatures. Mediterranean plants definitely don’t appreciate their roots sitting in soggy soil, so if your garden tends towards the damp and maybe boggy, too, it’s wise to choose plants that will be happy in these conditions. Damp growing spaces can come in a few different varieties. There are outand-out boggy, riverside or pondside areas that might also be prone to flooding during wetter weather. Or you might have heavy clay soil that gets sticky and boggy in wet winters but can dry out in the summer. Perhaps you have a tricky spot that tends to stay damp and shady, where the soil holds onto moisture and remains cool, similar to the edge of a woodland. As always, nature provides the solution to all these problems in plants that are perfectly adapted to these conditions. There are shrubs and perennials that span a wide range of interest to give you seasonal colour, texture and structure right through the year and many of them are magnets for pollinators, too. From the first appearance of primulas and marsh marigolds in spring and irises in early summer, the damp garden is full of colour. You can carry this right through Damp & Shadey Plants into autumn with successional planting. There are so many damp-friendly perennials to choose from, right across the colour spectrum. Astilbes come in hundreds of shades from white through pink to deep red, while persicarias will bring more ruby and white tones, rudbeckias and ligularias will add some sunny golden zing with their daisy-like flowers. Adding foliage plants Foliage plants also come into their own in damp areas, with giant Gunnera manicata making the biggest statement of all. But if you don’t have room for this monster, the diminutive G. magellanica makes great ground cover. Japanese petasites, which is also edible, puts on a wonderful, lush foliage display, but needs room to spread. For smaller spaces, hostas and ferns will transform shady areas into cool green havens. Some of the best shrubs to combine with perennials in moisture-retentive soil in a layered planting scheme are salixes and cornus. These look great both in waterside locations, and in mixed borders, where the coloured stems are great for winter effects and the summer foliage makes a good companion for the more brilliant flowering perennials. Plants for damp soil Astilbe ‘Fanal’ (x arendsii) AGM The long-flowering red feathery plumes of Astilbe ‘Fanal’ make a real statement and the foliage contrasts with bolder leaves. They will tolerate a shadier damp spot, but for the best results full sun is preferable. HxS: 24x16in (60x40cm). Lythrum salicaria ‘Robert’ With its upright spikes of bright pink flowers (pictured above), loose strife will naturalise on the edges of ponds and waterways. Great for pollinators, the autumn colouring of the foliage is an added bonus. HxS: 35x20in (90x50cm). Rodgersia pinnata superba AGM With giant horse-chestnut- shaped leaves this is a great plant for its foliage, but the flowers and seeds are also attractive. Best for a shady, slightly boggy spot. HxS: 36x30in (90x75cm). Ligularia ‘The Rocket’ AGM The tall spires of golden-yellow starry flowers on dark stems in summer rise out of a cluster of attractive leaves with serrated edges. HxS: 5ftx3ft 3in (150x100cm). (Pictured above). Zantedeschia aethiopica ‘Green Goddess’ AGM This elegant arum lily looks wonderful in the garden and is great for cutting. It thrives in damp, semi-shade where it will form a generous clump. HxS: 39x24in (100x60cm). Lobelia cardinalis A dazzling plant, with its dark-red foliage contrasting with brilliant red flowers, this needs moist soil and will look fantastic teamed with ligularia and rodgersia . HxS: 3x1ft (90x30cm).

14 The Last Word To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. Exam season is finally ending This year we’ve had ‘A’ Levels and university exams – and it’s really made me remember my own exam-season madness. The stress of revision, the long nights, the tension and butterflies waiting outside the exam hall! It’s a lot. I never really thought about whether my parents were stressed too! So, whether you’ve been navigating SATs, GCSEs, ‘A’ Levels or BTECs or your own kind of stress in business or life, just take a moment. You’ve done more than you think. And by the time you read this, you might have already finished - and have a lovely long summer ahead of you! Enjoy! And for us parents, we can breathe a sigh of relief it’s all over (at least for now!!!) Summer Starts Now So, as exam season finishes, what’s next? There’s something about June I always love although I’m sad to see May (my favourite month) come to an end! Maybe it’s the longer evenings and warmer dog walks – but I seem to have more motivation to say yes to things I’ve been putting off. I often use this time to ask myself: “How do I want to feel by the end of summer?” Not what do I want to achieve, but how do I want to feel in my mind, body and spirit? Because, let’s face it, if you have that sorted, the work-life balance bit seems so much more manageable. And Summer is the time to do it! As you know, I’ve just launched my very own Slimming World group in North Ferriby and it fits in perfectly with this! It’s such a positive shift, not just in terms of living a healthier lifestyle, but also in the sense of community and support it brings. I’m meeting so many more wonderful people. It’s not about perfection. It’s about feeling better, inside and out - and helping others do the same. What thing are you going to say ‘Yes’ to, to make you feel amazing? The Ripple Effect I was in a shop recently and I heard an elderly lady say to the woman on the till, “You’re the first person I’ve spoken to all day. It’s been lovely. Thank you.” It might not seem much, but that warm smile and a bit of conversation made all the difference. And if we all followed this example - a small act of kindness, a compliment, an extra minute of patience, sending a message to someone who’s been quiet online or hasn’t been out recently – what a difference it would make to their day, their life! And doesn’t it just make the whole world a better place to be? Have a great June everyone! These days most homeown- ers suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where York- shire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the oppor- tunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Warren Ingleson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served trades- men so our customers are assured of the best job. Integ- rity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our busi- ness relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply would- n’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Warren on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
