Local News 4 £200 payments now available to East Riding residents in need through Household Support Fund Payments of £200 are now available to residents on low incomes in the East Riding through the latest round of the Household Support Fund, a national scheme. As part of its Help For Households campaign, East Riding of Yorkshire Council is encouraging people to apply for the money, which is designed to help those most in need, who are struggling with energy, water, food and grocery bills. Those eligible include families with children of all ages, pensioners, unpaid carers, care leavers and disabled people, larger families, single-person households, and those financially in crisis. The payments have been made possible as the council was awarded £2.061m in the latest, fifth stage of the Household Support Fund national grant scheme, to help local residents. The council has so far paid out around £10m through the first four rounds of the Household Support Fund since it was launched in October 2021. Gill Barley, the council’s director of revenues and procurement, said: “This money is available right now to help our community and I would urge people to please check to see if they are eligible and apply online. “We hope this money will make a difference as there are many people on low incomes in the East Riding who are having an extremely tough time. “Please tell your friends and family about this fund because it may just help.” Through the latest award, the council will also be supporting a number of local schemes and organisations helping people in need, including: l Investing £1m towards the cost of providing free school meal vouchers during school holidays until October to those eligible in the East Riding, l Giving Food banks in the area a share of £50,000. How to apply for the £200 l To apply for the £200 payment visit www.eryc.link/fund Automatic payments l Those low income working households and unpaid carers who previously applied between April 2023 and March 2024 and received a Household Support Fund payment don’t need to apply again. They will automatically receive a payment. l Payments will automatically be paid to those who meet eligibility criteria and currently receiving council tax support. l Eligible households will receive the £200 payment by the end of July 2024. Making a claim l The application form will be open until the end of August. One application per household. l People who are successfully entitled will receive their payment within 20 days of making the application. l Those who don’t have access to the internet and wish to make a claim can call the council on (01482) 393939. These days most homeown- ers suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where York- shire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the oppor- tunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Warren Ingleson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served trades- men so our customers are assured of the best job. Integ- rity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our busi- ness relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply would- n’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Warren on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft! YOUR POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER JONATHAN EVISON I am delighted to have been re- elected as your Police and Crime Commissioner. Over the past 3 years, we have been working hard to increase feelings of safety and improve public confidence in policing, but the work can not stop there. My priorities going into the next 4 years will be to ensure there is more visible policing and more initiatives to tackle drugs and anti- social behaviour. We are continuing to develop fair policing to help tackle rural, coastal and urban crime. We will be introducing more new technology to help make our roads safer and reduce causalities. We will continue to maintain strong support for victims of crime and increase the work to end violence against women and girls. My Community Alert is a free messaging system where I regularly share work that we are doing. It is also where you can find out more about local policing activity in your area, the latest initiatives and how you can get involved. The National Crime Survey results were recently published and for ‘Confidence in local police’, Humberside Police is in the top 3 forces as of December 2023, which is 28 places better than where the force ranked a few years ago and better than the England and Wales average. In the next few months, I will be sharing the next Police and Crime Plan survey with you. This is your chance to help shape policing and community safety in your area for the next 4 years. Please keep an eye out on our social media channels for you chance to participate. HumbersidePCC HumbersidePCC opcchumberside www.humberside-pcc.gov.uk POLICE AND CRIME PLAN NATIONAL CRIME SURVEY 6

HumbersidePCC HumbersidePCC opcchumberside My office has received £65,000 from the Department for Transport (DfT) for a pioneering road safety project called Operation Journey. We have purchased 350 dash cams for use by regular road network users who are willing to help us make the roads safer through uploading and identifying bad driver behaviour. Anyone with a dash cam can upload footage by visiting Humberside Police’s website and clicking on Dash Cam Reporting. If you would like to have the opportunity to apply for a dash cam, please sign up to My Community Alert where we will be announcing future rounds. I am also trailing new technology in the East Riding to look at how we can enable local villages to improve roads safety conditions. I will update you on the progress of this in future editions. Operation Shield, has recently relaunched to continue the focus on clamping down on crime in hotspot locations, identifying and targeting the most harmful criminals who prey on our communities. The most recent operation saw arrest numbers reach 1250 with 500 criminals charged or jailed. This operation, as well as many others, relies on intelligence our communities regularly submit, so it is important to always report crimes, incidents and information. This can be done via the Humberside Police online portal, by calling the non-emergency number 101, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. ROAD SAFETY COMMUNITY SAFETY FUND OPERATION SHIELD In my last term of office, though my Community Safety Fund, £1.5m was committed to 86 local community organisations, with £860,000 of match funding. This investment saw nearly 4500 participants supported in a range of different projects, allowed 104 CCTV cameras to be installed and over 800m of security fencing to be constructed. As we go into the next 4 years, I will be announcing further rounds so I can continue to help make our communities safer. 7

8 Literature The Gentleman From Peru By André Aciman A new novel about a group of college friends marooned at a luxurious hotel on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. While their boat is being repaired, they can’t help but observe the daily routine of a fellow hotel guest – a mysterious, white-bearded stranger who sits on the veranda each night and smokes one cigarette, sometimes two. When the group decides to invite the elegant traveller to lunch with them, they cannot begin to imagine the miraculous abilities, strange wisdom and life-changing story he is about to impart to one of the friends in particular… Caledonian Road By Andrew O’Hagan It’s May 2021, London. Campbell Flynn – an art historian and celebrity intellectual – is entering middle age. Fuelled by an appetite for admiration, controversy and novelty, he doesn’t take people half as seriously as they take themselves. Then there’s Milo Mangasha, his provocative student. Milo inhabits a more precarious world, and has experiences and ideas that excite his teacher. Over the course of an incendiary year, a web of crimes, secrets and scandals is revealed, and Flynn may not be able to protect himself from the shattering exposure of all his privilege really involves. Bad Habit By Alana S. Portero A Spanish hit that’s been translated into English, Bad Habit takes us deep into the lives of the residents of a Madrid neighbourhood named after a holy saint. An unnamed young trans woman grows up in a working-class suburb that has no place for her. She discovers community and kinship in downtown Madrid, amid a dazzling party scene animated by charming junkies, glamorous pop divas and fallen angels. With each step she takes forward in the city, she finds herself confronted by an antagonism she does not yet New books: know how to counter. In this thrilling and often frightening place, each decision can have the highest of stakes, yet she knows that only she can forge a path forward to the life she wants to live. This story of self-realisation illuminates the ties between gender and class, the search for identity, and the power of chosen family. Clear By Carys Davies On the remote Scottish island of Ivar in 1843, the sole occupant leads a life of quiet isolation until the day he finds a man unconscious on the beach below the cliffs. The newcomer is John Ferguson, an impoverished church minister sent to evict Ivar and turn the island into grazing land for sheep. Unaware of the stranger’s intentions, Ivar takes him into his home, and despite the two men having no common language, a fragile bond begins to form between them. Meanwhile on the mainland, John’s wife Mary anxiously awaits news of his mission. Against the rugged backdrop of this faraway island, Carys Davies’s intimate drama unfolds with tension and tenderness. Enlightenment By Sarah Perry Thomas Hart and Grace Macauley are worshippers at the Bethesda Baptist chapel in the small Essex town of Aldleigh. Though separated in age by three decades, the pair are kindred spirits – torn between their commitment to religion and their desire for more. But their friendship is threatened by the arrival of love. Thomas falls for James Bower, who runs the local museum. Meanwhile, Grace meets Nathan, a fellow sixth former who represents a different, wilder kind of life. They are drawn passionately together, but quickly pulled apart, casting Grace into the wider world and far away from Thomas. In time, the mysteries of Aldleigh are revealed, bringing Thomas and Grace back to each other, and to a richer understanding of love and life. 10 Recipe To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk Carrot Cake Cupcakes (Makes 12) Rebekah Robins our food column writer, says her cupcakes are beautifully moist and flavourful thanks to the grated carrots and an abundance of spices. Meanwhile, chopped walnuts lend some added crunch and the cream-cheese frosting tastes like a cloud of fluffy, sweet goodness. A fun alternative to making a single carrot cake, these are the perfect addition to any at- home afternoon tea. Ingredients: FOR THE CUPCAKES: 160g of gluten-free flour blend 160g of light brown soft sugar 1 tsp of baking powder ½ tsp of bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp of xanthan gum 1 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground ginger ¼ tsp ground mixed spice ¼ tsp salt 130g of sunflower or other neutral-tasting oil 60g of full-fat plain or Greek yoghurt, at room temp 2 eggs, at room temperature 200g of carrots, coarsely grated 60g of walnuts, chopped, plus extra to decorate FOR THE FROSTING: 300g of double cream, chilled 150g of icing sugar, sifted 300g of full-fat cream cheese, chilled 1 tsp of vanilla bean paste ¼ tsp of salt Method: Step 1 Adjust the oven shelf to the middle position, preheat the oven to 160°C and line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake liners. Step 2 Sift together the gluten-free flour blend, sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, xanthan gum, spices and salt. Step 3 In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, yoghurt and eggs. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and whisk until you get a smooth, thick batter with no flour clumps. Step 4 Fold in the grated carrots and chopped walnuts until evenly distributed. Step 5 Divide the batter equally between the 12 cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full. Step 6 Bake for about 25 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs attached. Step 7 Remove the cupcakes from the tin and transfer to a wire rack to cool. Step 8 Now, make the frosting. Using a stand mixer with the whisk attachment or a hand mixer fitted with the double beaters, whip the double cream and icing sugar until the mixture holds stiff peaks. Step 9 In a separate bowl, whip the cream cheese until smooth. Add it to the whipped cream and whip for about 1 minute until the mixture holds stiff peaks. Add the vanilla paste and salt, and mix until incorporated. Step 10 Transfer the frosting to a piping bag (use your choice of piping nozzle) and pipe on top of each cupcake, then sprinkle with the chopped walnuts to finish. Step 11 They last 3-4 days in a closed container stored in a cool, dry place.

Gardening 12 To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk Not every garden can enjoy full sun and some get less light and suffer from damp, but don’t despair! We reveal the plants that are happy in damp conditions. In these climate-changing times, we have to cope with extremes of wetter winters, heavier rainfall and storms, as well as warmer, drier temperatures. Mediterranean plants definitely don’t appreciate their roots sitting in soggy soil, so if your garden tends towards the damp and maybe boggy, too, it’s wise to choose plants that will be happy in these conditions. Damp growing spaces can come in a few different varieties. There are outand-out boggy, riverside or pondside areas that might also be prone to flooding during wetter weather. Or you might have heavy clay soil that gets sticky and boggy in wet winters but can dry out in the summer. Perhaps you have a tricky spot that tends to stay damp and shady, where the soil holds onto moisture and remains cool, similar to the edge of a woodland. As always, nature provides the solution to all these problems in plants that are perfectly adapted to these conditions. There are shrubs and perennials that span a wide range of interest to give you seasonal colour, texture and structure right through the year and many of them are magnets for pollinators, too. From the first appearance of primulas and marsh marigolds in spring and irises in early summer, the damp garden is full of colour. You can carry this right through Damp & Shadey Plants into autumn with successional planting. There are so many damp-friendly perennials to choose from, right across the colour spectrum. Astilbes come in hundreds of shades from white through pink to deep red, while persicarias will bring more ruby and white tones, rudbeckias and ligularias will add some sunny golden zing with their daisy-like flowers. Adding foliage plants Foliage plants also come into their own in damp areas, with giant Gunnera manicata making the biggest statement of all. But if you don’t have room for this monster, the diminutive G. magellanica makes great ground cover. Japanese petasites, which is also edible, puts on a wonderful, lush foliage display, but needs room to spread. For smaller spaces, hostas and ferns will transform shady areas into cool green havens. Some of the best shrubs to combine with perennials in moisture-retentive soil in a layered planting scheme are salixes and cornus. These look great both in waterside locations, and in mixed borders, where the coloured stems are great for winter effects and the summer foliage makes a good companion for the more brilliant flowering perennials. Plants for damp soil Astilbe ‘Fanal’ (x arendsii) AGM The long-flowering red feathery plumes of Astilbe ‘Fanal’ make a real statement and the foliage contrasts with bolder leaves. They will tolerate a shadier damp spot, but for the best results full sun is preferable. HxS: 24x16in (60x40cm). Lythrum salicaria ‘Robert’ With its upright spikes of bright pink flowers (pictured above), loose strife will naturalise on the edges of ponds and waterways. Great for pollinators, the autumn colouring of the foliage is an added bonus. HxS: 35x20in (90x50cm). Rodgersia pinnata superba AGM With giant horse-chestnut- shaped leaves this is a great plant for its foliage, but the flowers and seeds are also attractive. Best for a shady, slightly boggy spot. HxS: 36x30in (90x75cm). Ligularia ‘The Rocket’ AGM The tall spires of golden-yellow starry flowers on dark stems in summer rise out of a cluster of attractive leaves with serrated edges. HxS: 5ftx3ft 3in (150x100cm). (Pictured right). Zantedeschia aethiopica ‘Green Goddess’ AGM This elegant arum lily looks wonderful in the garden and is great for cutting. It thrives in damp, semi-shade where it will form a generous clump. HxS: 39x24in (100x60cm). Lobelia cardinalis A dazzling plant, with its dark-red foliage contrasting with brilliant red flowers, this needs moist soil and will look fantastic teamed with ligularia and rodgersia . HxS: 3x1ft (90x30cm).

The best way to improve soggy soils and heavy clay is to dig in plenty of organic matter. This will improve the soil structure and drainage, reducing compaction and allowing nutrients to reach the roots. It will also help to hold onto moisture through dry summers. Adding a thick mulch in spring around plants will help to stop clay soil drying out, too. 14 Fiona’s Word Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. It only takes a second to be polite! If there’s one thing that drives me mad, it’s people who can’t be bothered to say thank you. You know what I mean! Doesn’t it make you cross when you’re driving and you give way to another car coming in the opposite direction – and they don’t acknowledge it? Or how about when you’re walking down the road and a couple of people are walking up – and they expect you to move aside rather than them walk in single file for the briefest of moments? Or when you hold a door for someone and they just walk through it without even a smile or a nod? It takes no time at all to be polite – and good manners make the world of difference! Summer holidays are beckoning At the time of writing, we’ve had some lovely weather and the summer holidays are most definitely beckoning. It got me thinking, though, what essential items do you always pack? We’re going abroad this year, the first time since pre- Covid and I can’t wait! But I’m not talking about what clothes you’re taking, although that can be a dilemma. (I always take too much so I am determined to pack very lightly!) I’m also not talking about your passport (which I check a hundred times between the house and the airport). What little things do you always take just in case? I always take a good book, a puzzle book and a pack of cards (always handy when there are delays). What extras can you not do without? What are you watching? I’ve run out of things to watch! Please help me with recommendations! I’ve recently rewatched A Discovery of Witches, Downton Abbey, Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes and the first two series of The Crown. I’ve already watched Succession and Kin. I don’t know about you but I spend too much time scrolling through the multitude of channels/streaming services on offer looking for something to watch. I don’t like horror things but murder mysteries, historical dramas and family sagas are right up my street! Thank you in advance! Have a great June everyone! I’ll look forward to your suggestions.
