These days most homeown- ers suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where York- shire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the oppor- tunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Warren Ingleson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served trades- men so our customers are assured of the best job. Integ- rity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our busi- ness relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply would- n’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Warren on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft! 6 Health & Wellbeing To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk Chances are, you know somebody who has been directly affected by breast cancer and, if you do, you’ll know that early detection is key. More than 90% of women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest stage survive the disease – so here we’re sharing five warning signs that might not seem ‘obvious’ to you but still need to be given attention. If you do recognise any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor to get things checked out. 1. Nipple retraction While most of us know to look out for any new lumps or bumps, nipple retraction – where the nipple appears to turn inwards – is a key sign many women aren’t aware of. 2. A lump in the armpit It’s worth knowing that swelling in or around your armpit or collarbone can also be a sign of breast cancer, as it’s not just the breasts themselves where lumps are found. This can be a sign the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in those areas, and sometimes it can even be spotted before you feel a lump in the breast. Lumps in the armpit can be caused by other things too, such as infections or allergies, but it’s worth seeking medical help as soon as you notice a lump to rule out anything untoward. 3. A rash It’s easy to brush away niggling symptoms like rashes, but for some women it’s not always an allergy, or a change in washing powder that’s causing it. A rash across one or both breasts can be a sign of inflammatory breast cancer, so if you’re even the slightest bit concerned, it’s always worth getting it checked out to put your mind at rest. 4. Eczema It’s not common, but Paget’s disease of the breast (different to Paget’s disease of the bone, where bones become weak and deformed) is a rare skin condition that is sometimes a sign of underlying breast cancer. It looks very similar to eczema – a red, scaly rash covering the breast – and is often itchy, too. It always starts in the nipple, and sometimes extends to the areola. 5. Thickening of the nipple The key to detecting breast cancer early is getting to know your breasts – and what’s normal for them. While every woman is different, checking your breasts regularly means you’ll spot any changes quickly, and feel more confident visiting a doctor when something’s amiss. Remember their appearance and feel can change at different times of your cycle, and again once you’ve gone through the menopause, but if your nipple feels thicker than normal, or the texture has changed in some way, then it’s worth investigating. Any changes in the skin at all in that area from puckering and dimpling to thickening and itching should never be ignored. Breast cancer symptoms you must not ignore!

Nesting by Roisin O’Donnell On a bright spring afternoon in Dublin, Ciara Fay makes a split-second decision that will change everything. Grabbing an armful of clothes from the washing line, Ciara straps her two young daughters into her car and drives away. Head spinning, all she knows for certain is that home is no longer safe. This was meant to be an escape. But with dwindling savings, no job, and her family across the sea, Ciara finds herself adrift, facing a broken housing system and the voice of her own demons. As summer passes and winter closes in, she must navigate raising her children in a hotel room, searching for a new home and dealing with her husband Ryan’s relentless campaign to get her to come back. Because leaving is one thing, but staying away is another. What will it take for Ciara to reinvent her life? Can she ever truly break away from Ryan’s control – and what will be the cost? Tense, beautiful, and underpinned by an unassailable love, hope and resilience, this is the story of one woman’s bid to start over. So Thrilled For You by Holly Bourne Nicki, Lauren, Charlotte and Steffi have been friends since university. Now in their thirties, life is pulling them in different directions - but when Charlotte organises the baby shower of hell for pregnant Nicki, the girls are reunited. Under a sweltering hot summer day, tensions rise - and by the end of the evening, nothing will ever be the same. Someone started a fire at the house - and everyone’s a suspect... Is it Steffi, happily child-free but feeling judged by her friends? Is it Charlotte, desperate to conceive and jealous of those who have? Is it Lauren, who is finding motherhood far, far worse than she imagined? 8 Literature February Reads Or is it Nicki herself, who never wanted a baby shower anyway? In the aftermath, the police put together the facts - but the truth will shock everyone. Even you. Confessions by Catherine Airey It is late September in 2001 and the walls of New York are papered over with photos of the missing. Cora Brady’s father is there, the poster she made taped to columns and bridges. Her mother died long ago and now, orphaned on the cusp of adulthood, Cora is adrift and alone. Soon, a letter will arrive with the offer of a new life: far out on the ragged edge of Ireland, in the town where her parents were young, an estranged aunt can provide a home and fulfil a long-forgotten promise. There the story of Cora’s family is hidden, and in her presence will begin to unspool… The Quick and the Dead by Emma Hinds It is 1597 and Kit Skevy and Mariner Elgin have just robbed the wrong grave. The two are unusual criminals in the pocket of a gang Lord named Will Twentyman, the Grave Earl of Southwark. Mariner is the best cutpurse around, a strange Calvinist girl who dresses like a boy and is partner in crime to Kit Skevy, Southwark’s best brawler who carries a secret: he cannot feel pain. When caught out in their unfortunate larceny, Kit is kidnapped by the threatening alchemist Lord Isherwood (a man who will stop at nothing to achieve his hopes for the Red Lion elixir) and his studious son, Lazarus Isherwood, with whom Kit develops a complicated intrigue. When Mariner enlists the help of a competing French alchemist, Lady Elody Blackwater, Mariner and Kit are thrust into the shadowed, political world of Tudor alchemy. Parsnips are a source of fibre plus nutrients like vitamins C and K and folate, which is vital for the formation of cells and DNA. Spinach is an important source of vitamin K, which is thought to be important for maintaining healthy bones. Broccoli contains high levels of vitamin C, which protects against a range of chronic diseases. Asparagus contains antioxidants, including vitamins A, C and E, plus flavonoids and polyphenols. Tomatoes should be picked when fully ripe for the highest levels of lycopene, an antioxidant that protects against cell damage. Potatoes should be eaten right after harvest for a boost of vitamin C. Levels rapidly decrease after harvest. Pumpkins boast plenty of anthocyanins and carotenoids, antioxidants that aid gut health. Carrots contain beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A in the body and is essential for the eyes, lungs and the digestive system. Berries such as blueberries and blackberries are high in antioxidants and vitamin C.

Growing your own food holds the answer. We all know fruit and vegetables are good for us, but it might come as a surprise to learn just how much healthier some crops are for us eaten fresh from the plot, rather than bought from the shop. Why? Often, supermarket produce has been specially bred to have a long shelf life and to be robust enough to be transported far and wide – not because they’re the most flavourful or rich in nutrients. Chances are, they’ll also have been picked prematurely, shipped around the world, or up and down the country – or both – and artificially ripened. This long journey from field to fork, and the conditions on the way, can deplete fruit and vegetables of goodness and flavour. Numerous studies show that vitamin C in particular degrades rapidly after harvest, so freshness can make a huge difference. Researchers found spinach and broccoli lost more than 80 per cent and 60 per cent, respectively, of their vitamin C, after seven days in chilled storage. One study revealed all the vitamin C in spinach was lost after four days stored at room temperature. “Good sources of vitamin C, like potatoes, leafy greens, broccoli, and tomatoes, are definitely better if eaten soon after harvest,” says Dr Ken Thompson, plant ecologist and former senior lecturer at the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at Sheffield University. Growing your own also means you can enjoy crops that are perfectly ripe, which means they’re as delicious as they can be, and as nutritious, too. “If you leave fruit on a plant to mature and ripen fully, it’ll have more nutritional value than fruit picked when half ripe,” says Graham Seymour, Professor of Plant Biotechnology at Nottingham University. He continues: “During the ripening process you get a build-up of useful phytochemicals – or active plant compounds. Tomatoes, for instance, will become redder and have more lycopene, an antioxidant that protects against cell damage when fully ripe.” In fact, some supermarket tomatoes are selected to never fully ripen and always remain firm. Anthocyanins and carotenoids are other beneficial nutrients that are generally more abundant in home-grown fruits and vegetables than shop-bought. According to Professor Cathie Martin from bio- science institute, the John Innes Centre, these compounds have antioxidant properties and promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria. These compounds are part of a plant’s natural defence system to protect against stresses caused by such factors as light damage. Anthocyanins give crops such as berries, aubergines and red cabbage their purple hue, while carotenoids are found in orange produce – squash, carrots, sweet potato, pumpkin and tomatoes. What’s more, when produce isn’t allowed to ripen naturally, there’s no time for these compounds to accumulate.
14 The Last Word To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk Here we share ten fun facts about love that will wow and surprise you... 1. Monogamy is not just for humans You may think that monoga- mous relationships are just for humans. However, one of the fun facts about love is that various species in the animal kingdom commit to life-long relationships and live with only one partner throughout their lives. 2. Being in love is like being high on drugs Love can make you do things that feel irrational, things that you never thought you would do. Research suggests that falling in love can feel like a dose of cocaine. When we fall in love, we experience intense emotional and physical responses due to the release of various chemicals in the brain such as dopamine, norepi- nephrine, and serotonin which creates a feeling of happiness, excitement, energy and focus. 3. You can fall in love in as less as four minutes It is proven that you can fall in love in as few as four minutes. It only takes four minutes to make the first impressions, and that is why it is said that you must pay attention to your body language and presence. 4. Opposites attract is not a myth Having different interests and hobbies can actually help couples be more spontane- ous and have a loving, lasting relationship. 5. Adventure can make you feel more in love There is a reason experts ask people to bring in some adventure and spontaneity in their relationship. Going on an adventure with someone where some risky situations may be involved is likely to make you both fall in love deeper and quicker than when you are in a mundane life together. 6. Cuddling with the person you love can relieve physical pain Cuddling with someone you love releases a hormone named oxytocin in your body. Oxytocin is also known as the love hormone. Love, therefore, is not just about emotions. 7. Intense eye contact can make you fall in love Looking into each other’s eyes can make you feel very close to someone. Even if you do this with a stranger, you will likely feel emotions like love and intimacy. 8. Face or body attraction means something Whether you feel attracted to someone based on their face or body says something about what kind of a relationship you want with them. If you feel attracted to their body, you are likely to be looking for a fling, while if you feel attracted to their face, you want a long- term relationship with them. 9. Attraction can be obsessive When we feel attracted to someone, our body releases hormones that give us a high. Such attraction could be an obsessive trait since the body craves this high, and we like to be around the person we feel attracted to. 10. Butterflies in your stomach are a real feeling The saying about feeling but- terflies in your stomach when you see the person you love is a real thing. The sensation is caused by a rush of adrenaline in your body, the hormone triggered when you are put in ‘fight or flight’ situations. Valentines Day: The Facts About Love...
