Local News 4 Blood pressure monitors now on loan from East Riding Libraries Members of East Riding Libraries can now borrow blood pressure monitors as well as books as part of a new scheme. All libraries and mobile libraries in the East Riding have blood pressure monitors available for members to borrow for free for up to two weeks. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council scheme now allows residents to monitor their blood pressure from the comfort of their own homes, as well as easing some burdens on GP surgeries in the area. After borrowing a blood pressure monitor from the library, users will also be given a diary sheet for recording their blood pressure twice a day, as well as a chart to be able to see blood pressure readings that are in normal, elevated and high ranges. All kits will also come with user instructions, and any people who are concerned or worried about their blood pressure readings will be advised to make an appointment with their local GP or pharmacy. This will be on a self- referral basis. Blood pressure checks can also be performed in branch at some libraries as part of the council’s Healthier, Happier, Connected scheme. These are bookable through participating library branches including Beverley, Bridlington Central, North Bridlington, Goole and Withernsea libraries. Councillor Nick Coultish, the council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “This is a fantastic new scheme which will be a real benefit to the health of our library members in the East Riding. “These machines can be borrowed free from any library or mobile library so residents can keep a check on their blood pressure without the need to visit their GP surgery.” Monitoring blood pressure is extremely important and can help people to spot abnormalities before they become life threatening. Andy Kingdom, director of public health at the council, said: “About a quarter of the population has high blood pressure, and blood pressure tends to get higher as people get older. “The good news is that there is a simple blood pressure check that people can do, and if someone’s blood pressure is higher than it should be there are ways to reduce it. “Lifestyle changes such as healthier eating, physical activity and in some cases prescribed drugs can all decrease blood pressure, and in turn reduce chances of long-term conditions like diabetes, heart disease and stroke. “Normal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60 mmHg and 120/80 mmHg. For over-80s, because it’s normal for arteries to get stiffer as we get older, the ideal blood pressure is under 150/90 mmHg (or 145/85 mmHg at home). “For those where blood pressure is higher than it should be, there is support on hand to make lifestyle changes through East Riding’s free Healthier Futures programme.” Healthier Futures: www.healthier-futures.co.uk or call 0330 236 9102. This blood pressure machine loan service is available to any East Riding Libraries member and is completely free. These days most homeown- ers suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where York- shire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the oppor- tunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Warren Ingleson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served trades- men so our customers are assured of the best job. Integ- rity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our busi- ness relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply would- n’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Warren on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft! 6 Holidays and Days Out To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk The Lake District is one of the UK’s most enduring and popular destinations – It’s only 140 miles (2.5hrs)away from Goole/Howden by car - The area holds plenty of appeal for families, couples and solo travellers alike. Windermere Windermere is a quaint town named after its ten-mile-long lake – the largest in the area. Thanks to its shoreside location, there are plenty of water-based activities to take part in, from boat cruises, to paddle boarding. Climbers can hike Scafell Pike, the tallest mountain in England, while those with kids in tow can take the short trip to Bowness-on-Windermere to visit The World of Beatrix Potter. Keswick The market town of Keswick is where to head for the best organic produce and handmade gifts, all of which are sold at the farmer’s market every Thursday and Saturday. Surrounded by famous natural sites such as the Cat Bells mountain, Friar’s Crag and Borrowdale Valley, Keswick’s Derwentwater lake is the ideal spot to take in the breath-taking scenery. Embark on an eight-mile walk around the water or take a cruise on the town’s open deck boat, Keswick Launch. Water sports fans can also head to the marina, while those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land should visit Castlerigg Stone Circle, with its panoramic views and stunning mountain backdrop. Ambleside This town is bursting with National Trust properties, from Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top farmhouse to the 17th-century Bridge House and colourful Stagshaw Gardens. An Ambleside highlight is Stock Ghyll Force, a stunning 70-foot waterfall that, come springtime, is surrounded by flowers and grassland. Head to Waterhead Pier to catch a steamer ferry to one of the other lakeside villages, or hire a row boat to travel at your own pace. Ullswater Ullswater is home to the second largest lake in the area, surrounded by mountains on one side and rolling hills on the other. Along with activities such as steamboat cruises, kayak tours, guided walks and pony trekking, the biggest attraction here is Aira Force, one of the most famous waterfalls in the Lake District, which is said to have inspired Wordsworth’s poetry. There’s a mile-long walking route around the waterfall, where you can expect to spot a variety of flora and fauna, including ‘wishing trees’ which, as legend has it, bring you luck. Ullswater is also home to Helvellyn, the third highest peak in England, which makes for a fantastic, albeit challenging, hike. Grasmere Grasmere is a pretty village popular with tourists thanks to its rows of 19th- and 20th-century stone houses, as well as traditional tea rooms and gift shops. A trip to Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage is a must – the picturesque property has been turned into a museum honouring the poet and houses some of his original manuscripts. For an afternoon treat, head to Faeryland, a lakeside garden complete with row boats and a charming tea room, or Sarah Nelson’s Gingerbread Shop, which has become a local landmark. 8 Literature The Coast Road By Alan Murrin Alan Murrin is one of the sharpest new minds on the literary scene. His debut novel, released earlier this month, is set in 1990s County Donegal, Ireland. It tells the story of Colette, who returns to her small community after leaving her happy family life for a married man in Dublin. Facing the scrutiny of her town, Colette returns and tries to reclaim her life, but the man she left is refusing to let her see her children. With the legalisation of divorce right around the corner, our protagonist finds herself stuck between her old life and the freedom she risked everything for. She strikes up a friendship with a housewife and mother of two, and the women embark on a journey of self-discovery and tragedy. A Perfect Day To Be Alone By Nanae Aoyama If you’re a fan of Japanese literature, A Perfect Day To Be Alone is one to reach for. A love letter to Tokyo, it follows the relationship between a young woman, Chizu, who moves in with 71-year-old Ginko, a kooky distant relative. The two rub along precariously, amid youthful antagonism, unfulfilling part-time jobs and other unsatisfying relationships. Spanning spring to spring, this tale is a moving analysis of loneliness and the human condition, full of wry humour and detail. Funny Story By Emily Henry Funny Story has all the components of your favourite rom-com movie: awkward and unfortunate circumstances, a small hometown setting, and an unlikely pair with love prevailing. When Daphne’s fiancé realises he’s in love with Top Summer Reads his childhood best friend and dumps her, she has no option but to move in with a roommate to save some money. Of course, the roommate is the chalk to her organised cheese, and he’s also her ex-fiancé’s new partner’s ex. The two wronged exes hatch a plan to put their exes through hell – and hilarity and romance ensue. All Fours By Miranda July Sentimental and quirky, Miranda July’s The First Bad Man was an instant New York Times bestseller. Featuring the same witty prose and wry observations about womanhood and sexuality, her new one is likely to be the same. All Fours begins with our 45-year-old protagonist – a semi-famous artist – on the precipice of great change. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she finds herself exiting the freeway, booking into a motel, and undergoing a temporary metamorphosis. Thrilling and relatable, this is one of those novels that makes you feel alive. My Favourite Mistake By Marian Keyes When it comes to beach reads, Marian Keyes is a failsafe. Her latest centres around Anna Walsh, a high-flying beauty PR who loses her taste for the Big Apple. One midlife crisis and major life U-turn later, she finds herself in a sleepy coastal town in Ireland. Her old friends, who are trying to set up a luxury coastal retreat, find themselves in trouble with the locals who oppose the idea. Soon enough, Anna is in hot water of her own when her old flame, Joey Armstrong, resurfaces.. To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk

Step 2 Grab a handful of mint and clap between your hands to release the essential oils and flavour. Add to the jug. Step 3 Add the rum and watermelon juice. Step 4 Shake. Step 5 In a chilled glass, add crushed ice and pour over the watermelon mix. Garnish with mint and lime wedge. Watermelon & Strawberry Granita SERVES: 6 TIME: 4 Hours Ingredients 1 unwaxed lime 100g of golden caster sugar 200ml of water, at room temperature ½ watermelon, peeled, deseeded and cut into chunks 250g of strawberries, hulled and halved, plus extra to decorate, if desired Method Step 1 Thinly pare the rind from the lime and put it in a small saucepan with the sugar and water. Step 2 Squeeze the lime juice into the pan. Step 3 Bring to the boil and simmer for 6-8 minutes until the volume is reduced roughly by half to make a syrup. Step 4 Remove from the heat and set aside to cool to room temperature before removing the lime rind. Step 5 Put the cooled syrup, watermelon chunks and strawberries in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until smooth. Step 6 Pour into a shallow baking dish (ceramic or metal – a metal one will freeze fastest) and spread the bright red pulp evenly. Step 7 Transfer to the freezer and freeze the mixture until the edges begin to set, for about 30- 35 minutes. Step 8 Remove from the freezer and use a fork to scrape and break up the frozen portions. Step 9 Freeze again, scraping and breaking up the granita every 20-30 minutes until it resembles fluffy shaved ice – the total time will be 2-4 hours. Watermelon: Summer Drinks

Gardening 12 To contact Telephone: 01964 552 470 • Email: ask@daltonspire.co.uk • www.daltonspire.co.uk In today’s world, incredible advances in technology allow us to connect with our loved ones, wherever they are, but that can also come at a cost of feeling overwhelmed by being permanently connected and constantly bombarded with information. But, fortunately, there is no doubt that time spent interacting with nature can be a welcome tonic for the mind and body. Mental health charity Mind explains that spending time in green spaces, or growing food and flowers, can have positive effects on mood, reducing feelings of stress, and helping us to feel more relaxed. If you’re keen to take up gardening, and want to develop a relaxing green space of your own, it can be tricky to know where to start. In order to create an environment that helps you switch off and become more mindful, it’s useful to think about the five senses when planning your space. By considering sound, sight, taste, touch, and smell, you can begin to develop a sensory garden that helps you tune-in to your surroundings, and provides a necessary break from the stressors of daily life. 1. SOUND Natural noises, such as rainfall and birdsong, are recognised as being peaceful and calming. Rather than listening to them via an app, you can easily tune- in to the real thing. Hanging bird feeders in sheltered spots, or placing a bird bath, will encourage and support wildlife numbers. Installing a bubbling water feature will mean gentle background noise in your garden, too. You should also consider that certain plants and trees, such as long grasses and willow, will create peaceful sounds in the wind, and that more dense foliage can help to block out unwanted noise from nearby roads. 2. TASTE Growing plants you can eat is a magical process. It’s hugely satisfying, and allows us to nurture and observe the development from small seeds to kitchen ingredients. Having an ongoing supply of spinach, beans, or salad leaves means you’ll spend less money at the supermarket, and avoid considerable amounts of plastic packaging. You’re also likely to waste less food, having appreciated the delicate growing process. If you’re a tea drinker, then it’s wonderful to grow herbs, such as mint, that can be infused in hot water for a relaxing brew. You can also research other botanicals that are great for cocktails and decorating cakes. 3. TOUCH Getting your hands dirty in the process of planting and tending to a garden is a mindful practice in itself, but you can also enhance the experience by introducing a patchwork of textures into your space. Try choosing different plants with soft, shiny, waxy, or hairy foliage. A mixture of cobbles and smooth tiles can be used to create pathways and patios in order to provide a range of textures. If you’ve got space, think about incorporating a springy lawn to walk over barefoot, or run your fingers through for an instant connection to nature. 4. SMELL Scent is often the first thing we associate with a garden, given the wonderful fragrance produced by many beautiful flowers. Depending on your preference, you can grow lavender and jasmine for the ultimate relaxing scents. Try roses, sweet peas, or honeysuckle for sensuous summer smells, or citrus fruits and tomato plants for wafts that are zesty and uplifting. Of course, stimulating smells aren’t limited to flowering plants. Autumnal leaves, rich compost, and freshly cut grass are all nostalgic scents that can help ground us, and identify changing seasons. 5. SIGHT When working on a computer, there’s something inspiring and refreshing about a view of trees or other greenery through the window. Create this for yourself How to create a mindful garden It’s time to sow the seeds of a more sensory natural space

Of course, colours have a big impact on our mood, so consider this when selecting flowering plants and decor for your garden. Typically, white and purples induce thoughtfulness and reflection, while hot colours, like orange and yellow, are linked with joy and excitement. You can get brilliant glazed terracotta pots, patterned cushions, and even outdoor rugs to add a splash of colour and something special to look at. For truly unique features, try upcycling furniture for your outdoor space. Old wooden drawers or crates can work well for miniature herb gardens, or add an old mirror to elongate your space – whatever will bring a smile to your face. Using the five senses can be a helpful starting point when creating a special spot for unwinding. However, if you’re still stuck for inspiration, try wandering round other gardens or natural areas, such as woodland. Here you’ll experience plants, materials, sounds, and smells that you can often replicate in your own garden. Just remember, you don’t have to have a large outdoor space in order to feel closer to nature. A conservatory, balcony, or even window box, can be ideal for growing plants, developing your green fingers, and boosting wellbeing.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council, in partnership with Humberside Police, will be providing a range of fun activities for young people aged 11 and over on benefit- related free school meals. Outreach workers will lead activities from DJ workshops, multisport with Hull FC to street art workshops, dance workshops and wrestling in sumo suits. The youth bus was developed as part of the Barnardo’s collaboration project with East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Voices Mean Choices. Young people, parents/carers and partners from a range of organisations were involved in the designing of the concept “Our Place” to offer a safe place for young people to come to. Councillor Victoria Aitken, Cabinet Member for children, families and education said: “These sessions offer a fun, free way for young people to come together, in safe spaces. “Young people have been involved in developing the youth bus concept and the designing of the bus, as well as the activities that will be running. Thanks to everyone who helped with this Our Place project and I know young people will enjoy all it has to offer this summer!” Inspector Matt Wilson said: “We are really pleased to be joining forces with the council to help deliver these fun and exciting activities over the summer holidays. “This is a great opportunity for young people to come together with friends and exercise, express themselves creatively and enjoy something to eat as well. It’s going to be a really fun summer and I hope to see lots of young people coming along and making the most of the brilliant sessions that are planned.” Parents can book funded places for young people who are in receipt of benefits-related free school meals, and go to an East Riding school. There are also places on all programmes for pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), regardless of their free school meal status.
