Technology News October 2025 Get Your Business Noticed When you think of construction, what comes to mind? For most of us, its bricks, cranes, and steel frames. But in East Hull, something far more exciting is taking shape - a future where digital tools, creativity, and opportunity come together to inspire the next generation. That’s exactly what Sewell Group’s brand-new Digital Construction Academy is all about. A Fresh Gateway into Construction The Digital Construction Academy, at the Sewell Group HQ on Geneva Way in Hull, is a bright, modern space designed to get young people excited about careers in construction. At the Academy, it’s all about combining tools of the trade with tools of the future, where hands-on skills meet digital creativity. There are workshops, taster sessions, and design masterclasses. Students get the chance to learn practical skills, and also to step into the world of digital design, 3D modelling, and even augmented reality (AR). It’s a perfect mix of old and new; the traditional skills that keep our buildings standing, paired with the creative technology that will shape the future. By combining real-life experiences with interactive tech, the Academy shows that construction is a place for problem-solvers, designers, and dreamers - people who want to make their mark on the world around them. The Augmented Reality Careers Wall: Bringing Construction Careers to Life! Working in partnership with Sewell, HelloU Creative created a unique interactive Augmented Reality careers wall that highlights roles within the construction industry. Covering the full construction journey of Plan, Design, Build, real-world real professionals shared their stories, giving young people a powerful way to explore careers. The Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) audience were the first to view the AR wall - and they were excited by the possibilities this technology brings. By blending AI and human touch, and combining traditional and digital communications, the wall shows how we can inspire young people to connect with careers in a whole new way. Instead of picking up a leaflet, students point their phone at a poster and see characters come to life on the page - a project manager explains how to run a school build, a digital modeller demonstrates how structures are tested virtually, and an architect shows how sketches on paper transform into the spaces we live and work in. Careers were suddenly brought to life, with young people able to see how roles connect across the Plan, Design, Build pathway. Because the stories came directly from real people, students found it easier to understand the roles. And since the experience felt interactive, fun, and familiar - much like the apps and games they already use - engagement was natural and memorable. For many, this was the first time career guidance and advice felt like an experience rather than something to just read about, making choices clearer, more meaningful, and truly inspiring. Creativity at the Core For me, the connection with creativity is what makes this Digital Academy so exciting. Just like starting a painting with a blank canvas, construction professionals now begin with digital models that can be shaped, tested, and brought to life. AR gives students the chance to play, experiment with layouts, and even test out sustainable choices in real time. It doesn’t take away from traditional skills - it builds on them. Bricks, wiring, and site management are still important, but they’re now part of a much bigger creative process. Construction has become a space where art, design, and technology meet. Why It Matters The Digital Construction Academy isn’t just a training space. It’s a promise to young people - that their ideas, their skills, and their creativity are valued, and that there are exciting futures waiting for them here in our region. For Beverley, Hull, and the East Riding, it means keeping local talent local, while giving young people the confidence to aim high. It shows young people that innovation isn’t happening somewhere else - it’s happening right here, on our doorstep. Looking to the Future The construction industry of tomorrow will look very different to the one we grew up with. With digital design, AR, drones, and sustainability all part of the mix, it’s becoming one of the most creative industries out there. Through Sewell’s Digital Construction Academy, young people can experience this future today. They can imagine, experiment, and step into roles that will shape our towns, cities and communities for years to come. Because in the end, construction isn’t just about buildings it’s about building futures. And when you mix creativity with technology, those futures look brighter than ever. Helen’s World of Creativity By Helen Gill - HelloU Creative Building Futures: When Creativity Meets Construction “ Our Digital Construction Academy is all about showcasing the different roles construction can offer young people and inspiring them to consider their career path. With the shortage of people coming into the industry, we wanted to create something digital to engage students, so it was great to work with Helen to bring the roles to life.” Mark Boothby, Joint MD at Sewell Construction HelloU CREATIVE For more insights connect with Helen Gill: info @helloucreative.co.uk www.helloucreative.co.uk Scan to learn more about Sewell Group’s Digital Construction Academy. House & Home The kitchen is the engine room of the home and like many of you I’m sure, we spend most of our time as a family in the kitchen. In fact, that is one of the main reasons we wanted to switch the rooms around last year – it didn’t make sense us all cramming into our tiny kitchen and rarely using the large spacious living room we had. It’s not just a place to cook, but where we gather at the end of our day, invite friends over, complete homework and of course sit round and eat together. So while the kitchen has got to meet many practical needs, ultimately the decor is what makes it feel like a great place to be. I absolutely love our open plan kitchen. It feels spacious and light and easy to move around. I’ve made sure that it is super practical with oodles of storage and a well planned out layout with great appliances but it’s also jam packed with my personality, and this is what delivers the magic. Embracing my love of pattern and colour on the cabinets, on the walls and in all the little styling Continued on Page 8 low ceilings like I do. The main piece of advise I have for you here is not to arrange them in a grid! Position the spot lights to actually illuminate the area required. So for example position over the sink, hob, worktop or walkway. However, spotlight or not, there are other ways you can bring character into your kitchen with decorative lighting. You won’t always want a big bright light, so consider where HOW TO ADD PERSONALITY TO YOUR KITCHEN Interior Designer Frances Round dives into the humble kitchen... For all your plumbing requirements No job too big City & Guilds qualified Call out 24/7 Call: 01757 290350 / 07540 784996 www.bsplumbing-electrical.co.uk details means it feels integrated withe the rest of the house and brings me joy in spades! Kitchens are not merely functional spaces but should be warm and welcoming places too. There are easy ways to make them feel more comfortable, cosy and full of personality – and it doesn’t need to involve changing up the whole kitchen if you’re not in a position to do so. Here are some of the ways I love to give a kitchen personality: WALLPAPER Wallpaper can be a little divisive in the kitchen, but if your room is well ventilated there is no reason why it shouldn’t work. In a room that can be all hard shiny surfaces, it provides some pattern that helps soften the room, acting as a lovely contrast to all the hard lines from the cupboards and worktops. There are so many great designs available now too, many of which are easier to hang and some that can even be removed without damaging the walls – which is great for renters. I’d choose a pattern that sums up your personal style. and suits your house too. Anything from a country floral to an Art Deco inspired geometric depending on your preference. A few tips though. Avoid hanging wallpaper in areas where it is likely to mark, stain or get damaged- the area behind the hob and sink are obvious, but also behind the bin or dog bowls for example. If you are worried about your walls getting marked a couple of coats of decorators varnish will help a matt paper become wipeable and more robust. A heavily patterned paper will hide a multitude of sins, as will a paper with a dark background. I’ve wallpapered my last two kitchens and the paper has held up brilliantly. LIGHTING Loved by builders, hated by designers; the controversial spot light is always a bone of contention. I know it’s not fashionable to say, but I do feel they serve a purpose especially if you live in a house with CRAWFORD JOINERY TIME-SERVED JOINER ⚪25+ YEARS EXPERIENCE FREE QUOTES ⚪COTTINGHAM BASED Phone: 07764 946676 Email: crawford1919@icloud.com ALL ASPECTS OF JOINERY including: ⚪KITCHENS ⚪STAIRS ⚪FLOORS & DOORS ⚪BEDROOMS October 2025 Get Your Business Noticed

House & Home Continued on Page 10 wall to wall units. Even if you need cupboards to provide enough storage for the things you don’t want to display, please find a small area for open shelves. Having a kitchen full of wall cupboards can make the room feel small and imposing whereas open shelving provides ample opportunity for styling and faffing, but more importantly will help bring some personality into the room as you can display your favourite pieces. Whether that be a photo frame, vase of fresh flowers, some beautiful plates or pottery, a houseplant or three… it really will open up the space and give it interest and character. ARTWORK Another positive of removing some wall cupboards is it will give you space for artwork. There is no easier way to express your personality and style preferences than with stunning art, and I do love to see it in the kitchen, as its so unexpected. Art work can provide some of that colour, pattern and a style that brings interest to your walls with real impact. A natural wood or aged brass frame will also provide some texture – small details which all together help to make the room feel more considered. I’d really encourage you to invest in something you love as you will be looking at it every day. I love how the moulded frame with you might want softer light in the evenings – this is particularly important if your kitchen is open plan. I personally love a lamp on the work top or add a beautiful wall light if you don’t want to lose worktop space. You can either go for a fabric lampshade to provide some colour and pattern (if its positioned away from the cooking area) , or opt for a rattan or natural weave shade which adds some lovely texture amongst all the hard surfaces. WINDOW TREATMENTS As you know I absolutely love a window treatment and the curtains in our kitchen/diner are some of my favourite yet. They make a striking statement and provide a lovely frame to the view of for the garden outside. You may not have space or indeed the right style window for curtains and instead need something for a smaller window, in which case a roman blind or cafe curtains are great at introducing pattern and softness. For an extra bit of detail you can ask a seamstress to customise with a scalloped edge, a trim or contrast lining,. Or even a co ordinating bow as I have done. Lean into your decor style and apply the details to suit the look. OPEN SHELVING So much styling fun to be had with open shelves! Don’t assume that a fitted kitchen has to include the small bit of gold, really ties into the other materials used in this colour scheme. And the colour! Red kitchens are going to be big in 2026 and we love this one designed by Blanc Marine Interieurs. A shelf is the perfect place to display art work, stylishly propped up against other objects. Sweet corner in a small kitchen makeover by Jenni Yolo @ispydiy which is packed with personality from the artwork to sink curtains, tiles and vintage lamp. VINTAGE Like with bathrooms, kitchens are often dictated by what is necessary like appliances, storage, a sink etc all of which need to be ‘new’ or ‘newish’. I think adding something vintage or second-hand always helps a room October 2025 Get Your Business Noticed

furniture like an old farmhouse table, dresser or sideboard. But on a smaller scale, a vintage plate or aged terracotta plant pot will also do the trick. RUGS Another controversial item in the kitchen, but if you want to warm up your floor, both literally and aesthetically, it may be worth considering a rug or runner. There are a lot of washable designs available now at varying price points from Ruggable, to Dunelm or Benuta. I got this vintage kilim rug from That Rebel House who are amazing at sourcing beautiful colourful vintage rugs that tie in with your colour scheme. I absolutely love it as it breaks up all the practical but beige limestone tiles, and pulls the colour of the walls down onto the floor, making House & Home to feel more grounded, relaxed and authentic. Too much ‘newness’ can make it feel like a show room, and lacks warmth and personality. Materials which help to soften the look include aged wood, vintage the room look really coherent. It’s not washable but nothing that my Shark can’t handle to keep it looking pristine. HAVE FUN! And lastly it’s always important to have fun and flex your creativity. Kitchen’s don’t have to be boring and adding something ‘unexpected’ always provides an interesting talking point. Whether it be in the form of artwork or playful lighting, lining drawers or cupboards with wallpaper, changing up your hardware or light switches, creating a stylish display on a shelf or painting the inside of a cupboard or pantry with a colour that really pops, there are so many ways you can add personality to the kitchen. Literature he stumbles across a clue that may lead to the great lost poem, revelations of entangled love and a brutal crime emerge, destroying his assumptions about a story he thought he knew intimately. A quest, a literary thriller and a love story, What We Can Know imagines a future world where all is not quite lost. Katabasis by R. F. Kuang R.F. Kuang made waves with her last novel, Yellowface, a literary thriller exploring ambition, greed and white privilege. Now she’s written Katabasis, which leans more into the fantasy genre she was known for before. This is the story of a hero’s descent to the underworld. Grad student Alice Law has only ever had one goal: to become the brightest mind in the field of ‘analytic magick’. But the only person who can make her dream come true is dead and – inconveniently – in Hell. And Alice, along with her biggest rival Peter Murdoch, is going after him. But Hell is not as the philosophers claim – its rules are upside-down, and if she’s going to get out of there alive, she and Peter will have to work together. That’s if they can agree on anything. Will they triumph, or kill each other trying? Girl Dinner by Olivie Blake From the Sunday Times bestseller Olivie Blake, comes this powerful and darkly fun novel about ambition, lust and eating your fill – as wealthy ‘moms’ and sorority girls practice a sinister new wellness trend. The House is the most exclusive sorority on campus, and all its alumni are beautiful, high achieving and respected. After a freshman year she would rather forget, Nina Kaur knows being accepted into The House is the first step to the brightest possible future. Meanwhile, professor Dr Sloane Hartley is struggling. After 18 months at home with her newborn daughter, Sloane’s clothes don’t fit right, her husband isn’t as present as he thinks he is and even the few hours a day she’s apart from her child fill her psyche with The Land of Sweet Forever by Harper Lee This new book sees the late Pulitzer Prize-winning author Harper Lee’s publisher bring together a posthumous collection of newly discovered writing. Lee remains a landmark figure in the American canon, thanks to Scout, Jem, Atticus and the other indelible characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, as well as for the darker, late-50s version of small-town Alabama that emerged in Go Set a Watchman, her only other novel, published in 2015 after its rediscovery. The Land of Sweet Forever combines Lee’s never-before- seen short stories and published non-fiction in a volume that offers an unprecedented look at the development of her voice. Covering territory from the Alabama schoolyards of Lee’s youth to the luncheonettes and movie houses of mid-century Manhattan, The Land of Sweet Forever invites still- vital conversations about politics, equality, travel, love, fiction, art, the American South, and what it means to lead an engaged and creative life. This collection comes with an introduction by Casey Cep, Lee’s appointed biographer, which provides illuminating background for our reading of these stories. What We Can Know by Ian McEwan One of the UK’s best authors is back with an immersive new novel. It’s 2014 and a great poem is read aloud and never heard again. For generations, people speculate about its message but no copy has been found. Now in 2119, the lowlands of the UK have been submerged by rising seas. Those who survive are haunted by the richness of the world that has been lost. Tom Metcalfe, a scholar at the University of the South Downs, part of Britain’s remaining archipelagos, pores over the archives of the early 21st century, captivated by the freedoms and possibilities of human life at its zenith. When paralyzing ennui. When invited to be The House’s academic liaison, Sloane enviously drinks in a level of collective perfection that Sloane desperately craves. But as Nina and Sloane each get drawn deeper into the arcane rituals of the sisterhood, they learn that living well comes with bloody costs. Buckeye by Patrick Ryan Buckeye is a brilliant, expansive novel that straddles two world wars and the decades-long fallout of three families caught up in the aftershocks of foreign warfare. As news of the Allied victory in Europe reaches the small town of Bonhomie, Ohio, Margaret Salt walks into a hardware store and asks the man behind the counter, Cal Jenkins, for a radio. What happens next will change both of their lives forever. While the country reconstructs in the post-war boom, a secret grows in Bonhomie – and nothing can remain hidden in a small town. The consequences of that encounter intertwines the fates of two families, rippling through the next generation and compelling them to re-examine who they thought they were and what the future holds. One of Us by Elizabeth Day This new novel from Elizabeth Day is one of her best. In this compulsive story of betrayal, old bonds and buried scandals, one British establishment family comes face to face with the consequences of privilege and the true cost of power. Martin and Ben were friends for decades before the terrible events at Ben’s 40th birthday party tore them apart. So, when Martin receives a surprise invitation back into the inner sanctum of the dazzling Fitzmaurice family after seven years of silence, he can’t resist the chance to get his revenge. Ben has risen through the ranks of power and is now touted as the next PM. But Martin can’t help but notice certain flies in the ointment, not least the sudden death of Fliss, Ben’s sister and the Fitzmaurice black sheep, whose funeral sparks more suspicion than closure. Through their intertwined stories, we see a family unravelling under the weight of its secrets. And with everyone watching, the stage is set for a reckoning.. Fly, Wild Swans: My Mother, Myself & China by Jung Chang Jung Chang’s Wild Swans was a book that defined a generation. An epic personal history of Jung, her mother and grandmother – ‘three daughters of China’ – the book opens in 1909 with her grandmother’s birth when China was under the last emperor and finishes in 1978 when Deng Xiaoping officially ended the Mao era and started the ‘reforms’. Fly, Wild Swans brings the story of Jung’s family – along with that of China – up to date. China is now at another watershed moment with the era of Chairman Xi Jinping greatly affecting the lives of Jung and her mother. This is a book filled with drama, love, curiosity and incredible history – both personal and global. Will There Ever Be Another You by Patricia Lockwood This is the new novel from the author of No One Is Talking About This, winner of the Dylan Thomas prize and the only book shortlisted for both the 2021 Booker Prize and Women’s Prize for Fiction. The world might be in disarray but for one young woman, the very weave of herself seems to have loosened. Time and memories pass straight through her body, she’s afraid of her own floorboards, and the lyrics of ‘What Is Love’ play over and over in her ears. Tearing through the slippery terrains of fiction and reality, the possibility for human connection seems to beckon from the other side – and with it, the chance for a blinding re- emergence into the world. Will There Ever Be Another You is a wild and profound investigation into what keeps us alive in unprecedented times. Health & Beauty Rebekah’s Beauty Box Foundation Hacks You Should Know How to apply foundation remains one of the most common beauty-related questions on Google – which suggests many of us are still looking for ways to make our base look better. To help you achieve flawless results every time, I’m going to share my hacks. Whether it’s mixing your foundation with fake tan or perfecting the buffing technique, these are the expert tips worth knowing… Mix It With Fake Tan Achieving glowy skin is easier than you think. Simply add two to three gradual tanning drops to your foundation or base so you can apply everything in one go. Use a brush and blend it all over, right up into your hairline; over the next few hours the colour will build, delivering greater luminosity and a healthy-looking glow. The Isle of Paradise Tanning Drops are particularly good for this – plus, they’re vegan. Apply Skincare On Top A daily exfoliation with a gentle product like Medik8’s PHA Daily Exfoliating Tonic will get rid of surface dirt and dullness, giving you a smoother, more luminous complexion. Then, after you’ve let your foundation set, press in some of the Herbivore facial oil on top. You only need a small amount, but it’s a great way to get the glow. Match Your Face To Your Neck You don’t want your face to be darker than your neck – so test out different shades around your jawline, or dust your bronzer over your neck to even everything out for a more seamless blend. Find A Shade That’s Lighter Before you even apply foundation, make sure you choose the right tone and colour. No one should go darker than their natural skin tone – leave the warming up to bronzers rather than your foundation. Go half a shade lighter to brighten up your complexion, and then go in with some depth. That way, your face never looks flat or dull. Nail The Consistency It’s an age-old tip but sheering out your foundation with a moisturiser is one of the easiest tricks in the book. Do this on the back of your hand to get the right consistency before you apply it. As a general rule of thumb, go for two parts foundation to one part moisturiser so you still get good coverage. You can also mix your base with an illuminating primer or an SPF – like Beauty Pie’s Lightweight SPF50 Primer. This will thin everything out and give you extra glow. Prevent Pilling If you find your foundation doesn’t apply that well, or it’s pilling (rolling off in little balls), it’s important to check its compatibility with the other products you’re using. Remember, oil and water repel each other, so if you’re using a highlighting oil with a water-based foundation, it’s going to break up and bubble. Start In The Centre Of Your Face Foundation should be applied from the centre of the face outwards for the most natural coverage, thinning it out towards the jawline so it blends seamlessly into the neck and hairline. Doing it this way means the areas where you need more coverage (like the nose and under eyes) get a flawless and even blend. Try to avoid caking it over your nose, too – especially if you have freckles. Don’t Forget To Prep “Preparation is key to good foundation. When I work with a new face, I’ll always do a complete skincare routine first to see where we need make-up. By going through the process of balancing out (dry or oily) skin, exfoliating and hydrating the lips, then prepping the eye area, you can make sure foundation sits well and stays put. It’s simple advice I wish I was told when I was younger. Look after your skin and applying foundation will be easier. Layer Base Make-Up With Highlighter Coming into autumn, a lack of sun and the cooler weather makes our skin duller. To counteract this, mix one part of liquid highlighter to two parts of liquid foundation. This will illuminate your skin and keep it looking fresh. Buff, Never Paint Technique is paramount when it comes to flawless foundation. You want your base to melt into the skin, rather than just sweeping it on top – the latter will just result in it sitting on the surface. Opt for brushes with a flat base and fluffy hairs to really buff the foundation in. Use a dabbing motion to push the product down, rather than wiping it on and off in the same movement. Above all, if you see creases starting to form, keep working the formula in and be sure to buff around the jaw and hairline to avoid tidemarks. Warm Skin Tints Up If you like using tinted moisturisers, warm them up with your fingertips first, then apply the product directly to your skin. It makes them much easier to work with and gives your complexion incredible luminosity – especially if you’re using a liquid, like bareMinerals’ Complexion Rescue Tint. Identify Your Undertones Finding out whether your skin has warm, cool or neutral undertones is the key to finding the right foundation for you. There are easy ways to do so. First, you can do the vein test by looking at the ones on your wrist. If you have blue/purple veins, your undertone is cool; if you have green veins and yellow, golden skin, your undertones are warm. If you find your veins are neither or in between the two, then you’re considered a neutral undertone. Most foundation brands have warm (W), cool (C) and neutral (N) shades to choose from. Swatch Against Your Face “Your face is still the best place to test out any foundation. Try sweeping it onto the cheek, rather than the jawline, as most discolouration tends to be through the centre of the face, so you will achieve a more accurate result. Also, the cheek is equidistant from the forehead and jaw, so swatching it here allows you to make sure your foundation works with the top and bottom of the face. If you’re still unsure, swatch a cool, warm and neutral foundation on your forearm or chest to see which one works best with your skin tone – two will look ‘off’ while the correct one will look believable. Try To Double Up If you’re lucky enough to find a foundation that matches your skin perfectly all over, then great! However, you should have a couple of shades to work with the different tones all over your face. Ideally, you would have a slightly lighter shade for under your eyes and a darker tone for any patches and uneven tone. Don’t be afraid to mix and match – your natural skin tone isn’t one shade, so blending colours together will always give you a more natural finish. If budget is an issue, tinted moisturisers are a great place to start, followed by a concealer that can provide more coverage where needed. Stick To Similar Textures The ‘lightweight’ look isn’t just about your foundation. Yes, it’s the starting point, but to maintain that healthy, dewy glow, you need to be using similar textures in your other products. That includes bronzer, blusher and highlighter, so apply these (if you can) in cream or liquid format. This way, everything will work in synergy and you’re less likely to get pilling, too. Finally, always shake your foundation first – lightweight textures often separate in the bottle, and you want the liquid to combine for even, flawless coverage. October 2025 Get Your Business Noticed

It makes our job fun too seeing the excitement building from the day of booking to the departure plus hearing all about the adventure on their return. That’s what travelling is all about. New experiences full of fun laughter and making special memories. The USA and Canada are proving interesting at the moment but not just the eun of the mill city breaks or Florida sunshine. There is great interest in multiple cities, fly drives off the beaten track as well as escorted tours many including an iconic train journey or even cruising the Great Lakes! Many cities in the world warrant more than one short break. San Francisco is definitely one and teams very well as a stop off on route to Hawaii or as a multi centre with Las Vegas & Los Angeles. If you are intending to drive between places make sure you start or finish in San Fransico as parking in this city is not easy or cheap and travelling around by tram or driverless Waymo Taxi is kind on the pocket. It was weird to see driverless cars, this summer they had 700 licensed Waymo’s and 1200 in waiting. I personally did not have a ride but my son did two and thought it was great fun! As we were not first time visitors we headed out of the city crossing the Golden Gate bridge to the Muir Woods & Sausalito travelling back via ferry past the island of Alcatraz. The latter is a must for first time visitors along with winding Lombard Street & Fisherman’s Wharf with its colony of sea lions - we did make a return visit to the pier in fact two as our hotel was very close. We always try to take in a ball game, San Francisco’s Oracle is a magnificent stadium and the 49’s kept us on the edge of our seats. If you are looking for a longer stay in this area take in the nature at Yosemite National Park or the coast line of Monterey and Carmel, neither of these spots will disappoint and give you a totally different perspective without travelling huge distances. Los Angeles is a metropolis with many different sights to see, I had never been down town to where it all began until this year and what a shame I had not ventured here before. Originally staying in Greater Los Angeles with relatives it was never a place we ever visited. Hollywood always has a buzz and the Walk of Fame is a must, along with Farmers Market & Venice Beach. Las Vegas has to be visited at least once in a life time and don’t miss the Grand Canyon too whilst on the doorstep. Itinerary choice is endless. I am desperate to revisit Canada, one of my favourite places. My number one choice of itinerary starts in mid July for the Calgary Stamped, grab your Stetson & boots it is great fun. From here head through the awesome Rockies over to Vancouver, take the iconic Rocky mountaineer, or by car soaking up the scenery at a leisurely pace or even hop around by scheduled bus up to Jasper and Via Rail down to Vancouver. There are so many choices often your itinerary is decided by your window of opportunity - the longer the better. I have taken you to the West Coast in both instances. The East Coast advantage is a much shorter flight and in Canada you will find rural quaint and welcoming towns on the Eastern seaboard, best explored by car or an organised coach tour. Vibrant cities of Montreal & Quebec are options for city breaks. Whilst up in Quebec during the summer why not tag on Whale watching in the St Lawrence River? Emma has this on her bucket list! As Canadian specialists we know all of the provinces but still have a few to visit ourselves. Asia is gaining momentum whilst China slowly gaining popularity, Japan is a real hot spot. If you have never visited Asia this is a great place to start. A wonderful culture awaits, the Japanese love to practice three religions so they can join in with all of the festivals! The country is very safe, this is the only place I have ever travelled where I have not had to worry about my handbag. I would always advise an escorted tour to Japan, travel- ling around on your own is not easy. You will benefit greatly having a local guide ensuring that you see the country at its best with full explanation. New itineraries off the beaten track are now been offered, great for first timers and those looking to go back to see more of this very interesting country. The best times to visit this are April & October but at the moment the worlds weather does seem very unpredictable! For families looking for a mixture of nature & beach time, Thailand offers great value for money not only the price of the holiday to get there, your spending money also goes much further than many European destinations. A treat to experience is Elephant Hills a luxury tented camp. Elephants and monkeys in a natural jungle habitat where you also have the opportunity to cool off Kayaking on the river too. Emma visited with her son & daughter this year and has not stopped talking about it. Nearer to home and on the cruising front, Norway is attracting not only first time cruisers who are tasting what the Fjords offer but those going back to experience a different area of season of the year. Often I hear that it is too cold in Norway, but just to put the record straight in the summer you can easily burn so don’t forget to pack your suntan lotion. I have enjoyed many a late May visit wearing my shorts and this time of the year you will still see snow capped mountains and waterfalls in full force. The beauty is that you do not need to fly you can easily join at a port in the UK, unpack relax and enjoy travelling without any effort. Norway I always say “see lots and do nothing just sit back relax and enjoy the moving scenery”. Well until next month enjoy your travels where ever they take you.Whether close to home or across the world — the joy is in the experience. I’ll exploring Devon’s National Trust properties a conference in Guernsey rounding off with a week aboard a luxury Yacht in the Mediterranean. If you’re thinking about going away but still sitting on the fence, now is the time to make those dreams a reality. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like further information or to make a booking, Best wishes

Level 18 Tower 42, 25 Old Broad St, London, EC2N 1HQ Wondering whether your produce prepping methods are draining their health benefits? Dietitian Lauren Wrigglesworth is here to boil it down… Sure, they’re not the sexiest topic in nutrition (unless you’re partial to an eggplant or peach emoji), but fruit and vegetables offer some attractive benefits. Evidence shows that, when consumed daily, they help reduce the risk of diseases, including heart disease and some cancers. There’s also research to suggest they may protect against type 2 diabetes. Currently, the global recommendation for fruit and vegetable intake (set in 2003 by the World Health Organization) is a minimum of 400g a day. Meanwhile, national guidelines suggest aiming for five serves of vegies/legumes daily and two of fruit. With the average daily intake in the United Kingdom coming in at only 2.4 serves of vegetables/legumes and 1.4 of fruit, there’s some room for improvement. Portions aside, the way you prepare vegies also affects the benefits. While most fruits are ready to eat, vegetables typically undergo some sort of cooking before they hit your plate, which affects nutrient levels and how those nutrients are absorbed by the body. So what’s the most nutritious way to prep produce? Well, in short, it depends on the vegetable and the nutrients in question. One Chinese study investigated the effects of five cooking methods (five minutes each of steaming, microwaving, boiling, stir-frying, or boiling and stir-frying) on the nutrient levels in broccoli. The researchers found that, except for steaming, all cooking methods led to significant losses of vitamin C and glucosinolates – compounds associated with protective effects against cancer. Steaming: one, boiling: nil. Other studies have investigated the impact of cooking on a broader range of vegetables. A Spanish study tested the effects of boiling, microwaving, pressure-cooking, frying, griddling and baking on the antioxidant activity of 20 types of vegetables, including Brussels sprouts, green beans and zucchinis. While there were variations according to the type of vegie, overall, results showed that microwaving and griddling produced the lowest nutrient losses, while pressure-cooking and boiling led to the greatest. This mix of results might be confusing in isolation, but when taken together, the evidence suggests that submerging your vegetables in water isn’t your best bet to preserve precious nutrients. Steam to avoid this (a colander over a pan of simmering water works a treat as a DIY steamer), or if you’re boiling (or stir-frying), keep it brief and, if possible, throw the nutrient-filled cooking water into a soup. As ever, there are exceptions. Carotenoids and lycopene (yellow, orange and red pigments with antioxidant effects, found in foods like pumpkin and tomatoes) tend to be more bioavailable when boiled or stewed for a longer period, as cooking softens the cell walls, facilitating their absorption. One study found that cooking tomatoes for 30 minutes increased lycopene levels by 35 per cent – evidence, if you needed it, that pomodoro sauce is a legit health food. Getting nutritional bang for your buck isn’t just about prep; how you store vegies counts too. A 2024 study found the frozen kind retained more nutrients than fresh ones that were kept in the fridge for five days. So, if you’re not eating them within a couple of days, adding frozen produce to your shopping list could serve you well. PREP SCHOOL PEAS A source of vitamin C, folate and fibre. Microwave or steam for 2 to 3 mins to retain their C content. TOMATOES Eaten raw, they’re another good go- to for vitamin C. Roasted or cooked into a sauce, they’re high in the antioxidant lycopene – add a drizzle of olive oil to cooked tomatoes to increase absorption. BROCCOLI High in folate, vitamin C and fibre. Steam lightly and serve crunchy in salads or dip in hummus. How should you really cook your vegetables? October 2025 Get Your Business Noticed

I'm also a registered member of both the Association of Reflexologists and the Professional Reflexology Association, so you're in safe, trusted hands. I had never experienced reflexology before, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Gina recommended facial reflexology, highlighting its unique combination of the therapeutic benefits of traditional reflexology with the revitalising effects of a facial. It truly delivered on both fronts — I left the session feeling refreshed, balanced, and radiant. During our initial consultation, I mentioned ongoing neck and shoulder tension. Gina thoughtfully adapted the facial reflexology treatment to address these areas, demonstrating her attentiveness and expertise. The session itself was deeply relaxing, and by the end, not only was my skin glowing, but the tension had noticeably eased. I also enjoyed the most restful night’s sleep I’ve had in months. I'm looking forward to trying foot reflexology next, as Gina advised it could further support my neck and shoulder concerns. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gina and her holistic therapies to anyone seeking both inner balance and outer rejuvenation. Jane I went to Gina feeling a little bit stressed with work and feeling I needed to do something to help me relax and feel better about the way I look. Gina was absolutely lovely, she really helped me to relax and I even fell asleep during my facial. My skin felt great afterwards and I would highly recommend her. Lorna Gina has really helped boost my confidence. She is helping me reduce the anxiety I am suffering so I come to her for different treatments on a regular basis. She has also helped me understand the benefits of better skin care and through a zone facial reflexology course, I have seen such a difference in myself. It is really important for me to understand the issues that are affecting our communities so we can use our resources effectively to ensure everyone feels safe, both residents and visitors. We will be publishing the results of the survey in the coming weeks on our website. From our joint work around the Home Office Safer Streets Summer initiative, to organisations taking advantage of my Community Safety Fund, we’ve been creating lots of opportunities for some great partnership work over the past few months in and around the region. I’m looking forward to seeing this continue as we move into the winter months, where there will be a number of further initiatives. Please follow us on social media and subscribe to My Community Alert to be notified of the work we are doing in your area and get involved in making a difference. In June this year, the Home Office announced a new initiative to prevent crime and antisocial behaviour in town centres and ensure visible, meaningful consequences for those responsible. The focus of the Safer Streets summer town centre initiative is visibility, prevention and enforcement with partnership working encouraged. I have fully supported and promoted this locally, which brings together a range of initiatives that are already in place in and around the East Riding – the impact of working together is bringing in the results already. The first two months (August and September) have seen the following: Of course, there have been many other successes, that I will report on further as the initiative continues in the future. My Community Safety Fund can provide funding of between £500 and £35,000 towards projects that meet the scheme criteria and are led by voluntary and community sector organisations, or social enterprises. To date, over £1.86m of funding has been committed through the Community Safety Fund to support projects that impact on crime and community safety at the local level, with further funding being made available to support the delivery of the Police and Crime Plan (2024-29) between 2025/26 and 2028/29. This will see an overall investment of £3.35m by the end of the plan period. The deadline for applications is 03 November 2025 at 12:00 noon. 27 One of my key aims as Police and Crime Commissioner is to ensure visible neighbourhood policing accessible to all communities. As part of this, I am proposing to relocate Beverley Police Station from its current site on New Walk to County Hall in the centre of Beverley. I want to create somewhere that is more visible and accessible for local people to visit. I want to hear about what’s important to you, whether that be creating an easily accessible building, how you can get there by public transport, whether you want space to speak in private to the police, or if 24/7 access is your priority for example. I have put together a short survey so you can let me know your thoughts about what is important from your perspective. It won’t take more than five minutes to complete, and it will really help me to understand your needs and what you would like to see from a relocated police station. Please scan the QR code or visit www.humberside-pcc.gov.uk/get-involved/ consultations to take the survey. HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF BEVERLEY POLICE STATION We have recently refreshed our ongoing campaign aimed at preventing domestic abuse by partnering with local football clubs. In partnership with Hull City, Scunthorpe United and Grimsby Town, we are now displaying messages in the stadium, targeted at those who commit domestic abuse and encouraging them to face up to their actions, whilst also providing routes to support for those affected by abusive behaviour. In addition to this, our messaging also includes encouragement for the public to be active bystanders and call out any inappropriate behaviours. We are delighted to be working in collaboration with our local football clubs to raise awareness of domestic abuse and encourage more open conversations about harm within the home. Support services are ready to help those who need to change their harmful behaviours to get help to stop causing harm. Local support is also available for anyone experiencing hurt at home – please always remember that you are not alone, and help is available. If you need help to stop hurting someone, please visit www.helptostop.online If you are experiencing hurt at home, services are ready to listen. Here To Help in debt? Take time to talk to them. You don’t need to ask them directly about the debt, but let them know you are there for support. And don’t be judgemental, as it could add to their anxiety. Respecting each other around your finances is important for a strong relationship Couples’ counsel l If you’re in a relationship, be open about your spending - you shouldn’t have to hide receipts or price tags from someone you love and trust. l Have an understanding about what’s important to each of you and how you choose to spend earnings. l Book in a ‘money date’ each month, where you can sit down together and talk about bills, spending and your goals (individually and as a couple). Conversations around money can be awkward, whether asking a friend for what they owe you, telling a loved one you’re in debt or attempting to help family members manage their finances - it certainly isn’t easy. Around 12.6 million people admit to falling out with friends who have more money, and it’s also the biggest cause of arguments between couples. If you’re worried about money ruining relationships or are unable to talk to family about your finances, here are my tips on how to open up the conversation. WHEN FRIENDS OWE YOU MONEY Around one in five people lend money to friends and one in three end up waiting over a year for it to be paid back. We’ve all been there - we may lend money out of kindness, but there comes a time when you need it back, though asking for it can be difficult. You may find it easier to remind them How good are you at talking about money? by text, with your bank details to make it simple for them. Some banks, like Starling, have a feature that lets you send a direct payment link to people, to allow them to pay you fuss free. Ask your friend if it’s okay to remind them, say in a month. Then you shouldn’t feel guilty when you follow it up. If you are worried a friend or family member is unable to pay you back, come up with a repayment plan to allow them to return the money in small amounts, rather than a lump sum. THE AWKWARD DINNER BILL I get asked about this a lot - how do you make a fair split when eating out with friends and family? I have some basic rules around this. l If you plan to go out and are on a set budget, make this clear from the very start, not when the bill arrives. That way, there should be no fuss if you only want to pay for what you ordered. Or, you could go out with limited cash and tell them you have just enough to cover your own bill. l If your companions have chosen a restaurant that you can’t afford, then suggest an alternative. You may find that this suits everyone better, but no one has wanted to speak up. If you go somewhere within your budget, then splitting the bill equally shouldn’t be too much of an issue. WHAT ABOUT BEING IN DEBT? If you’re in debt, you may understandably feel embarrassed to talk about it. But the most important thing you can do is talk about it. I truly believe that no debt problem is as bad as it may seem and there is always a solution. You don’t have to talk to your family or friends about it, if you do not feel comfortable; there are some excellent debt charities, such as Step Change (stepchange. org) or National Debtline (nationaldebtline.org), to seek help from. If you feel comfortable about it, then letting loved ones know can help, as they are more likely to understand before adding pressure on you to buy things or go out. The Motoring Column It’s the news no enthusiast wanted to hear: the Ford Focus ST is no more. The final example of the fast Ford rolled off the Saarlouis assembly line in Germany on 26 September, marking the end of a hot hatch lineage spanning more than two decades. The writing has been on the wall for the Blue Oval’s performance models across Europe. The Focus ST order books were closed months ago, and its demise follows the decision in 2023 to discontinue the beloved Fiesta ST, as Ford phases out its ‘traditional’ hatchback models. CEO Jim Farley recently defended the cuts, stating that the company was not making “any real money” on these cars, despite the fervent customer base. The impact on Ford’s European presence is stark, with its market share now sitting at a low of 3.3 per cent, behind rivals like Hyundai and Kia. With regular Focus production ending completely in November, the long-term future of the Saarlouis plant remains under review, though it is currently slated to stay open until 2032. Ford Focus ST generations The Focus ST’s retirement closes the chapter on one of the most compelling stories in modern hot hatch history. The ST badge first appeared in 2002 with the Mk1 Focus ST170. As a medium take on the hardcore RS, its 167bhp 2.0-litre Duratec engine wasn’t the liveliest, but combined with the already brilliant Mk1 Focus chassis, it delivered an incredibly sweet and compelling package. Things went in a different direction with the 2005 Mk2 Focus ST. This generation was bigger, heavier, and arguably less delicate, adopting a more thuggish charm backed by a charismatic 222bhp, 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged engine. Sharing its architecture with the RS that followed, it was a proper GT hot hatch that had buyers questioning if they truly needed the flagship fast Ford. The Mk3 ST of 2012 proved to be a rare stumble for Ford. Its 247bhp 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine lacked the character of its five-pot predecessor, and the chassis struggled to deploy the power effectively, resulting in a frustratingly compromised drive. Thankfully, the Mk4 corrected the ST’s course. Launched with 276bhp and 420Nm of torque, it successfully re-injected control and precision and, while it perhaps couldn’t match the all-out pace of a Honda Civic Type R, it was a cohesive whole, demonstrating a welcome return to form for the fast Focus. The shrinking hot hatch scene The Focus ST is the latest casualty in the rapidly shrinking European hot hatch segment, joining the recently axed Honda Civic Type R (due to stricter emissions), Hyundai i20 N and i30 N, and the long-gone Peugeot 308 GTi. While some options remain, including the Volkswagen Golf GTI/R, Cupra Leon, and Audi S3/RS3 Sportback, the future looks increasingly bleak. With tightening emissions regulations and 2030 marking the end of new combustion car sales in the UK, petrol-powered hot hatches are a dying breed. Ford has pushed the ST badge onto the Puma ST, but while the compact crossover is dynamically sound, the mild-hybrid powertrain (with dual-clutch auto ‘box) that has replaced the 1.5-litre, three- cylinder engine (with six-speed manual transmission) means it’s a shadow of its former Fiesta-based self. As automakers focus on electric alternatives, like the Abarth 500e, Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, Alpine A290 and VW ID.3 GTX, it’s clear the glory days of the mass-market petrol hot hatch are officially over. The Focus ST will be sorely missed. Ford Focus ST: production of iconic hot hatch ends... It’s the end of an era for the Ford Focus ST, with iconic performance model following the Fiesta ST into history. The number of people who were killed or injured on roads across Great Britain has continued its long-term decline in 2024, according to new data released by the Department for Transport (DfT). Figures show that modest year- over-year improvements in several key road safety metrics have also remained relatively constant – something that has been a common trend since data was measured in 1979. Although progress has slowed in recent years, the DfT have claimed that road safety campaigns have continued to yield results – even as traffic volumes have returned to pre-pandemic levels. In 2024, a total of 1,602 people were killed in reported road collisions – a 1% decrease from the previous 12 months. The total number of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) also declined by around 1% to 29,467. Casualties of all severities hit 128,272 – a more substantial drop of 4%. DfT data showed that there were 4.7 road deaths per billion road miles travelled in 2024. This is a 3% reduction compared to the previous year. When comparing to statistics from other nations around the world, Great Britian remains one of the lowest casualty nations when it comes to road-based statistics. Based on data of 36 nations, Great Britian ranked fourth lowest for road deaths. RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis said: “While the latest data shows road casualties came down very slightly last year, this masks a harsh truth that can’t be ignored - that, on average four people are killed, and a further 76 seriously injured, every single day in Great Britain. And behind these figures is a reality that too many families have to face: coming to terms with lives ruined or cut short. “Britain might still have an enviable safety record compared to some other countries, but the simple fact is that casualties aren’t falling at a fast enough rate anymore. “Casualty reduction targets would be one way of giving the whole topic of road safety national focus, as would fresh interventions that could help remove the riskiest drivers from our roads - for instance, introducing alcohol interlocks to stop drink-drivers from reoffending, and steps taken to reduce instances of excessive speeding. “The Government has long trailed its forthcoming road safety strategy, so we look forward to seeing how this can bring casualty numbers down further.” Road casualties fall... As I am writing this while on holiday in Greece it seems appropriate to give a nod to Theophrastus (BC371-287) – father of botany. He studied at Plato’s school with Aristotle. In his book Enquiry in Plants (Historia Plantarum) he observed all features of the plant world, trying to characterise their structure, processes, etc. He must have wondered why the process of senescence in some plants could produce sure wonderful splashes of intense colour. Today we understand more fully the physiology about which little was known in BC265. Sudden bursts f autumn colours must have seemed an extraordinary way to wind down and grow old. The glorious final fling! Others writing about autumn include Albert Camus (1913-60), novelist and philosopher, who said: “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), philosopher, wrote: “Notice that autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature.” The author Stanley Horowitz (1925- 2022) said: “Winter is an etching, Spring a watercolour, Summer an oil painting and a mosaic of them all.” These days boundaries between summer and autumn run seamlessly from one to the other as herbaceous plants that perform later in the year become increasingly popular. This year we have been hurtled into autumn earlier than usual as a result of the long, dry hot spell. My small magnolia tree decided that autumn had arrived in mid August and is preparing for spring right now. Autumn can provide a rich tableau of colour, texture and scent from the flowers, and the fruits and seeds provide sustenance for the birds, insects and small mammals. The daisy family contributes the largest amount of colour to the autumn garden, but members of the mint family also features large, tempting pollinating hoverflies, etc., to their trumpet-shaped flowers. Salvias (sages) have great diversity in shape, texture and smell, and are long-flowering and not prone to pests. Their colour ranges encompass the whole spectrum with some intense blues contrasting well with the predominantly yellows and oranges of the daisy family. Many of the red berries in our hedgerows and gardens have long associations with ancient folklore and mythology. Rowan (Mountain Ash) is one in particular, steeped in history with old Gaelic names ‘Luis’ and ‘Caorunn’. In Norse legends it is said to have saved the life of the god Thor by bending over a fast-flowing river in the underworld in which he was being swept away. Thor grabbed the branch of the Rowan and climbed back on shore. It has a popular history as a tree to protect from witchcraft and enchantment. The tree was said to give protection to a dwelling by which it grew. I wonder if that could be why we see so may planted in housing areas in our towns! Their berries have a five-pointed star (pentagram) opposite the stalk which is an ancient protective symbol. The autumn red berry feast provided for the birds is extensive and includes Rowan, Yew, Holly, Whitebeam, roses, Bryony, Lords and Ladies, Spindle, Woody Nightshade, Wayfaring Tree and more. Many of these are poisonous to humans. IN THE GARDEN & ON THE PLOT Some perennials may have spread more than you would like, so it is a good time to divide them and replant. This will no doubt disrupt other nearby plants, but all will settle down over winter. Garden centres begin to be flooded with winter flowering plants suitable for tubs and containers. Bearing in mind that they have been nurtured in perfect conditions at the growers, they may not take kindly to being planted out in the open in your garden, so sometimes they can be a little despondent and reluctant to take off. A suggestion, if it is possible, is to give them protection and little by little acclimatise them, gradually moving them gradually to acclimatise them to their final winter position. This way winter pansies should give you pleasure and flower all winter if you dead-head them. Leaf mould can be used to mulch around fruit bushes and trees. Autumn raspberries may be cut down once they have stopped fruiting, but you can leave this until the spring. The asparagus bed will be ready for a tidy up by cutting down the ferny stems and giving the bed plenty of mulch of the winter. Enjoy your garden, veg plot and nature around you. Kate H Humble wrote that when Tim Peake went with six other astronauts to the International Space Station for six months they would gather in one section every Friday to eat together. Every week the same thing happened: All eyes would gradually become fixated on a poster on the wall featuring a large tree in a field. It was a revelation to Tim who now feels this human need for green living things should be factored in when considering exploration of, for example, Mars. Happy Gardening Sarah x Tips for October Clear leaves The simplest method of clearing leaves off the lawn is to run over them with a lawn mower. The cutting action of the mower blades will help to shred the leaves and make them quicker to rot down. Collect leaves this way once a week - any longer and the grass will start to grow long and get harder to cut. For clearing patios, paths and other surfaces, a leaf blower is a better bet. Either blow the leaves onto the lawn for the mower to pick up or blast them on to a tarpaulin and drag them to the compost heap. Plant up spring pots If you haven’t already planted some containers with Spring colour, there’s still time to plant now using bedding plants such as violas and wallflowers, plus Spring- flowering bulbs. Keep your pots in a sheltered spot, such as under a porch, to encourage blooms through the winter and to avoid plants rotting off in the Winter wet. 33 To Advertise Please Telephone 01964 552 470 Gardening to rotting in damp conditions. You won’t get masses of blooms during colder weather, but any milder spells should see a good show Store squash Winter squash and pumpkins should be harvested now and will need to be stored in a frost-free place. In the warmth of a kitchen they may not last long, so keep them in a cool shed or porch and you’lll be eating them until spring. Rosy outlook Pruning roses now helps them to weather winter well. Roughly chop bush roses back by about a third and take out those stems that cross the centre, and anything dead or diseased and you cut down on their wind resistance and make them less likely to get rocked about and incur winter damage. More thoughtful pruning can take place in spring. Pond life Pond pumps need to be removed from your pond, drained and stored for winter. Fish can be deprived of oxygen if pond surfaces freeze over later in the year, so float a ball on the surface now, to keep water moving. Turn to ash If you have a bonfire to get rid of all of your accumulated allotment prunings and debris, make use of the potash-rich ash. Any ash that is pure wood – no coal or smokeless fuel – is useful on the plot. When it is cool scatter it around the roots of fruit trees and bushes for great flowering and fruiting next year. Hedge your bets A native hedge is not only brilliantly useful for wildlife, it is beautiful too, an ever-changing patchwork of greens, flowers and berries. This is the perfect time to plant a mix of hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, elderberry, dog rose and more. The birds and the bees will thank you. Acid test Pine needles and conifer hedge trimmings take much longer to break down than other leaves, and it’s not a bad idea to make them a separate bin, so that you don’t get spiked when reaching into your compost’s depths. After two or three years they will break down to an acidic leaf mould perfect for use around ericaceous plants such as blueberries, azaleas and rhododendrons. A new season begins. The Last Word FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife and Mum to two teenagers! Taking on a Challenge I did it! The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge! 24 miles up, down and across Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough would have been enough – but the weather! Oh my goodness, it was shocking! Relentless rain, horizontal at times, sooooo windy - and hail about 4-5 times. The guide said it was ‘punishing’, the likes of which he hadn’t seen since his military days!!!! Typical! We did it (there was a group of 8 of us) in just over 14 hours. It just shows what you can do when you put your mind to it!! The last mile was definitely the hardest – but I am so chuffed to have done it, especially for such a wonderful charity. Thank you to everyone who donated! Run With It supports young people who struggle in traditional classroom environments by delivering education in exciting, real-world places - like football stadiums, shopping centres and airports. I support them with their PR and have seen the impact of their work up close. The demand for what they do is growing rapidly - because it works. Sometimes, challenges remind us how much stronger we are than we think. And when that strength also lifts others up? Well, that’s a win-win situation right there! Empty Nest… or New Adventure? We are officially empty nesters! Our youngest has just gone off to university, so with two of them away now, the house is empty and quiet. Are we crying about it? I don’t think so (except perhaps when I think about how much student accommodation costs!!!) It’s a funny mix of emotions really. We’re so excited for them. It’s the natural course of things for children to leave home so they can learn to stand on their own two feet, shop for themselves, do their own washing (and the washing up!) I loved it when I went and want them to enjoy it as much as I did. But parenting never really ends, does it? It just shifts into late-night texts and video calls! The thing is, my husband and I have also realised we’ll have more time to do things we want without having to wonder if anyone needs a lift or needs picking up from somewhere! So really, it’s not only their next stage in life, it’s ours too – and I’m looking forward to a new adventure! Autumn Leaves and Christmas Lists October always feels like the tipping point, doesn’t it? One moment we’re crunching leaves underfoot - and the next, the shops are twinkling with fairy lights and Christmas displays. I’m torn. Part of me wants to savour the cosy evenings, my one-pot soups (leek and potato please!) and casseroles – I do like to hibernate when it gets colder. The other part of me, though, is already making lists (and checking them twice!). Who else has spotted the festive aisles and thought - should I start my shopping now or wait until December? There’s something exciting about the run- up to Christmas, even when it feels a little early. So whether you’re all prepped by Bonfire Night or a last-minute Christmas Eve shopper, I think October is the month the countdown really starts! Have a fantastic month everyone!
