East Riding of Yorkshire Council will be handing out 5,000 bags of compost – 60 tonnes – to local residents over nine events between May 13 and 28. As normal, residents are invited to drive along to their nearest giveaway event, where two bags of compost will be placed into their car boots by council staff. The giveaways will start in Pocklington before moving on to Brough/Elloughton, Withernsea, Beverley, Preston, Goole, Hornsea, Carnaby and finish in Driffield. The compost being given away will be entirely made up from the recycled garden and food waste which East Riding residents place in their brown bins. Councillor Paul West, the council’s portfolio holder for environment and transport said: “We’ve been running our compost giveaways for a number of years now and they’ve been as popular as ever. “They are the council’s way of thanking residents across the area for their fantastic, continuing support of our recycling schemes.” All brown bin contents collected in the East Riding get recycled into compost by the Biowise plant in Willerby – where the giveaway compost comes from. Brown bins can be used to recycle grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds, all cooked and uncooked food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, bread, meat, eggshells and small amounts of soups, sauces and gravies. Free compost will be given away at the following events. Please note the new venue for Hornsea: l Monday 13 May from 5pm - Pocklington, Wolds Gliding Club, Hodsow Lane, YO42 1NP. l Wednesday 15 May from 4pm - Brough/Elloughton, Brantingham Park, Elloughton, HU15 1HX. l Friday 17 May from 4pm - Withernsea, Pavilion Car Park, Station Road, HU19 2QA. l Saturday 18 May from 10am - Beverley, council depot, Annie Reed Road, HU17 0LF. l Monday 20 May from 4.30pm - Preston, Lelley Fields Crematorium, Sproatley Road, HU12 8FX. l Wednesday 22 May from 4pm - Goole, West Park, DN14 6UU. l Friday 24 May from 4.30pm - Hornsea, Freeport, Rolston Road, HU18 1UT. l Saturday 25 May from 10am - Carnaby, council depot, Carnaby Industrial Estate, Lancaster Road, YO15 3QY. l Tuesday 28 May from 4pm - Driffield, Driffield Showground, Kelleythorpe, YO25 9DN. Blu Luna Café and bar first opened its doors on 24th November 2023, nestled in the corner of Saturday Market in Beverley. The family owned business is run by Sinem Kavak and her partner Yasin Kelles. Keeping it in the family, Sinem’s father, Haci, a chef for more than 26 years, is responsible for some of the amazing dishes that the venue has to offer. Blu Luna offers so much more than you could imagine from a passing glance. The menu offering is extensive, from the variety of breakfast dishes and light bites, served with a freshly brewed coffee or something from the drinks menu, to a lunch date with a friend, enjoyed with a chilled bottle of wine or a cheeky cocktail. Finish off your meal with a gelato or ponder over the delightful range of tempting desserts they have on offer. The café is open from 9am until 5pm Monday to Sundays, but opens late on Friday and Saturdays until 11pm, where you can enjoy a variety of alcoholic drinks and share an amazing Antipasto board or pizza with friends and listen to music. Live music has recently been introduced and it is something that Sinem wants to do on a more regular basis. At the rear of the property there is a secluded beer garden where you can chill out with friends and family and even your four legged friend is welcome, as the venue is dog friendly. If you are celebrating a special event, then the venue is also available for private hire. Don’t leave it too long to check out what Blu Luna has to offer – we are sure you won’t be disappointed! House & Home Continued page 8 Advertise here for as little as £40p/mth Tel: 01964 552 470 to book your advert. Before work even begins on building an extension, there are lots of decisions and details that you will need to pin down. Starting a project off on the right foot will help pave the way for a successful build. You do, after all, want to transform your home within a budget you can afford, so it’s important to get it right. That all sounds reasonable, but if you’ve never taken on an extension before, where do you start? PLAN WHAT YOU WANT AND NEED Dreaming about building an extension is where it all starts. Plan a wish list to help you think about what it is you really want, and also need. Once you’ve highlighted the key functions you hope to get from your extension, you can start to create a first draft of your design brief. This will form the basis on which you can start up conversations with architects and/or builders about your vision, your current niggles and your requirements. As the design process develops, tweaks can be made to fall in line with your budget. But at least you’ll begin to understand the areas you’d be willing to compromise on and those where you definitely wouldn’t. BE BUDGET SAVVY How much an extension costs is dependent on many things. Obviously, the size of it and how many storeys it’ll be will certainly impact the bottom line. But how much glazing you choose, the materials you use to build the structure, the style of roof you pick and where you are in the country will all influence the budget, too. As a guide, you should set aside between £1,500 and £2,500sq m for an extension, excluding VAT. It’s a broad price range (and it can be a lot more) because the cost will be affected by a number of factors. For example, the quality of the construction materials, the style of glazing, and the overall shape and position of the build, will all affect the total. It’s also a sensible idea to ringfence a 15-20% contingency fund to help minimise financial pitfalls, too. ENGAGE WITH AN ARCHITECT Do you need an architect for an extension? House & Home Continued page 10 stunning addition to your home. There are different levels of service an architect can offer, too. They could come in and consult, provide ideas and draw up construction plans. Alternatively, you can hire an architect for a full design service, which means they will effectively project manage the design process for you. And the cost? ‘This always depends on how architects structure their fees,’ explains Garry Barker, architect and director of York Build. ‘Some use a percentage to cost up and some will use a capped time charge. Generally, works on existing buildings can be more involved, so budget 8-12% of your total construction cost.’ FIND A BUILDER Start conversations early. Seek recommendations from neighbours, friends and family, and strike up an engagement promptly. Garry’s top tip when finding a builder is to not write off the smaller companies. ‘We have shifted how we deliver small domestic projects now and will generally only use a small builder, who does one project at a time.’ Try to source quotes from at least three contractors and always ask to see examples of past projects or find out if you can talk to previous clients. Put together a series of documents for the tender process – this should include things like plans/drawings, an outline of the work needed at each stage, whether you’d want the main contractor to be the project manager, a list of known materials needed, and so on. This means that they will be basing their quotes to you on the same criteria, so, that way, you should get like-for-like back from each one. SUBMIT YOUR PLANNING APPLICATION While many extension schemes can be achieved under Permitted Development rights, anything that’s pushing the boundaries in terms of design is likely to require formal consent from your local authority; likewise, if you live in a designated zone, such as a conservation area or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Working with an architect or professional planning consultant can increase your chances of success at this stage. They’re aware of local-planning policy and will be best placed to create a design based on a thorough understanding of the guidelines. It can also help to find relevant examples of similar extensions on your street, as these can serve as a precedent for your project and give you an idea of what’s possible. “Plan a wish list to help you work out what it is you want - and need” May 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

House & Home PICK A PROJECT MANAGER If your budget is tight, you may decide to take on the role of project manager (PM) yourself. This will certainly save you money, but not time. Do not underestimate what it entails. You’d be responsible for the site (access, safety and so on), the deliveries, the running of the project, the orders and the trades. And you’d need to be on site daily. It’s no walk in the park. If you have time, patience and organisational skills on your side, then it can be great to be so involved. However, if you think it’ll be a monumental commitment, then pass it over to a professional PM, such as a main contractor or architect, well versed in this area. Alternatively, you could split the role. A main contractor could act as PM until your extension reaches watertight stage. Then, you could take on the work, organising and overseeing the sub trades, such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters and decorators. ORDER THE ITEMS ON YOUR SHOPPING LIST Once your build has been scheduled and you know the start date, you can begin the exciting task of looking at items you need to order in – but do it sooner rather than later. This includes anything from cabinets, worktops and white goods for a new kitchen extension to the sanitaryware, tiles and flooring for a new bathroom – create an itemised list. Confirm with your builder when individual pieces need to be delivered to make sure they’re on-site when needed. You can add these dates and what you need to the extension schedule to identify where the delivery slots need to fit in. HIDDEN COSTS YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF Make sure to include these potential elements in your contingency budget plan so you’re not caught out later l Insurance – you’re likely to need specialist extension insurance. l A ground survey and/or groundworks to clear the site, such as removal of trees, and drainage inspections. l Fees for planning, architecture or structural engineering. l Potential Party Wall Agreement. l Interior decoration. l Any ‘making good’ of the garden after works have finished. EXTENSION TOP TIPS: STARTING POINT Factoring in plenty of storage is key if you’re designing a kitchen extension. THINK ABOUT LIGHTING As you’re starting from scratch, take the opportunity to get the lighting you really want, such as statement pieces and practical spotlights. LET THE AIR IN Make your extension feel even bigger with floor-to-ceiling doors that can be opened up directly onto the garden. SEEK EXPERT ADVICE Employing an architect will help with planning and designing your space, especially for larger multilevel projects that require consent. CONNECT IT Floor tiles in the same size and colour mean this kitchen-diner flows seamlessly out to the dining area beyond. May 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

House & Home Whether you want to extend your home into the garden or create a designated entertaining space, there are options for every budget. Outdoor kitchens that are well designed have functional zones for cooking and food preparation as well as space for socialising. Just like an indoor version, you should factor in the positioning of units and appliances and elements like worktops, flooring and lighting. DIY options are the most affordable way to create an outdoor cooking zone, but if you’ve got the budget, there’s a host of features you can incorporate. THE PLANNING STAGE First of all, decide where you want to position your outdoor kitchen. Do you want it to feel like an extension of the house, sited in a more secluded area, or where there is a lovely view? Think of practicalities such as carrying all the food, drink and cookware from inside your home. Consider factors such as where the sun travels throughout the day and whether you want full sunlight or a shady spot. How do you plan to use the space - full year-round use or just as an occasional entertaining space for parties and get-togethers in the summer months? DECIDING THE LAYOUT The shape, size and your budget will all influence the layout of your design. A single straight run of units suits smaller gardens. A parallel run comprises two counters giving you more storage and worktop space, like having an island, as well as allowing you to engage with guests while prepping food or serving drinks. L-shaped formations include all the benefits of a regular kitchen. A U-shape is better suited to larger spaces, for more people in the cooking area and extra room for appliances. THE PRACTICALITIES Before you start digging up the garden, think about what utilities you need. Apart from the basics, such as connecting a power supply for appliances and lighting, if you’re planning a sink area, you’ll require a water supply and drainage. With this in mind, an outdoor kitchen that is next to the house will be easier and more cost-effective. All plumbing and electrics should be carried out by professionals. CREATING SHELTER With the unpredictability of UK weather, you may want to design your kitchen with a cover. Pergolas and gazebos are ideal, but consider a design with a louvred roof to open or close as needed. A fixed glass roof will allow light in, or an awning is a good option for an outdoor kitchen that’s adjacent to the house. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? £1,000 for a just a barbecue and two units, £4,000+ for a design with appliances, bespoke projects start from £15,000 to £25,000+. STYLES AND MATERIALS Invest in units specifically designed for outdoor use. The most popular options are stainless steel, marine- grade aluminium, masonry, PVC, and wood available in either bespoke or off-the-shelf units, If, you are going down the bespoke route, find an experienced designer who can incorporate materials that tie in with your garden,” says Aaron Green, of Green Cherry Services Ltd. Ensure your chosen units will stand the test of time by considering maintenance - weatherproofing from rain and fading from sun exposure - as well as materials with resistance to stains, scratches, heat and frost. CHOOSING APPLIANCES Your preferred cooking method will influence the overall design and budget, be it gas, charcoal, induction or even wood-fired, as well as options like pizza ovens or smokers,” says Aaron. “Once you’ve considered these main appliances, there are the add-ons, such as outdoor fridges, ice machines and dishwashers that can be tailored to your design.” But think carefully about how you plan to use your kitchen before you invest in any gadgets that you may never use. Health, Beauty & Wellbeing Alongside some of the smartest formulas and innovations available today are hero products that have been around (and regularly reformulated) for 40 years, making them as brilliant now as they were at launch. Great skin starts right here. Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm The cleansing balm that put cleansing balms on the map. It’s adored for good reason: the balm- to-oil texture dissolves makeup as soon as it meets it, and the experience of using this is second to none. Made up of kind-to-skin oils and plant extracts that give the balm a spa-like scent, it comes alive under a hot tap. These oils don’t only serve to create a relaxing experience, but they also leave skin feeling comfy and balanced post wash off. Murad Rapid Dark Spot Correcting Serum Yes, it’s a serum that works (and works well) to brighten dark spots, but even people who don’t have dark spots notice the porcelain-like effect this gives. Glycolic acid and antioxidants give a fresher, more even glow after just a few uses. If you’re looking for something that perks up tired skin - and does so fast - look here. Beauty Pie Youthbomb™ 360° Radiance Concentrate Serum My mum is on her third bottle of this! There’s so much goodness packed into one bottle: peptides and ceramides to make skin look bouncy and plump, hyaluronic acid for some hydration, and retinoids for smoother, more even skin. Put simply, it works hard and does so many good things at once. It’s Beauty Pie’s most expensive product, but also its bestselling. Take from that what you will. Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Cream is a masterclass in moisturiser. Too many beauty products rely on shimmer to create a dewy sheen, but there’s none of that here; glow is provided by hydration (and lots of it). It’s a rich texture that absorbs beautifully and crucially, it plays well under makeup. I find using this consistently improves the bounce and density of my skin; texture is more even, surface is plumper. In short? This feels more than a moisturiser, and everyone should try it at least once. The Inkey List Oat Cleansing Balm For a cleansing balm on a budget, it doesn’t get better than this cult buy from The Inkey List. Firstly, the tube is a whopping 150ml, and with only a pea- sized amount needed to melt a full face of makeup, this product lasts and lasts. Secondly, the texture. There’s no real scent here so the sensorial benefit comes from its balmy deliciousness. It gives a satisfying amount of ‘slip’, allowing you to move the product around the face to whip off every single speck of dirt and makeup. A real workhorse that belies its affordable price tag. Clarins Double Serum Clarins’ bestselling serum is a smart one. Firstly, the packaging: there’s a dual chamber inside the bottle that dispenses the perfect amount of both water and oil soluble ingredients combined, creating a dreamy oil-serum texture. Secondly, the formula. It’s made up of 21 plant extracts that supply an immediate and long-term radiance, as well as hydration and suppleness. A real staple that skin just drinks up, every time. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex Serum Cult for over 40 years for good reason: this serum works with the skin’s night-time repair processes and uses peptides and hyaluronic acid to give glow and smoothness. There’s magic here - which has been carefully updated and reformulated over the years - that makes the complexion look fresher and brighter come morning. Reliably brilliant. Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Ceramide Capsules Radiance Renewal Serum It’s true: all of Elizabeth Arden’s capsules are stellar (not least because you can go away anywhere with them, and not feel you’ve sacrificed on skincare for luggage space). The vitamin C - buffered with a gentle helping of ceramides, to keep skin feeling calm - targets dullness and pigmentation in a way that is so effective, you’ll soon miss it when it runs out. Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant Congestion? Oiliness? Enlarged pores? Look here. The 2% BHA (that’s salicylic acid) nibbles away at dead skin cells like a PacMan to rid all of the aforementioned offenders. Even deep blackheads stand no chance: the salicylic cleanses both the surface of the skin as well as right inside the pore, for a smoother, clearer complexion over time. Garnier Micellar Water Sensitive Skin One of the most quietly brilliant products in our line-up, this micellar stands head and shoulders above the rest. There are plenty of variations of this for different skin types, but the one for sensitive skin is the most fail safe. Splash some on a makeup remover pad, let it rest on the eyes for a second, and wipe gently: it breaks down make-up with no need to rub. The price is excellent, a bottle lasts for ages and skin feels balanced and hydrated after use. I’d be lost without it. Kate Somerville UncompliKated SPF50 Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray Here’s the thing: when spending time in direct sunlight, you should be re-applying your SPF regularly. Sarah Chapman Skinesis Overnight Facial Expectations were high for celebrity facialist Sarah Chapman’s brand, Skinesis. They were not only met, but exceeded, and Overnight Facial became one of her bestsellers. The overnight serum-cum-oil is packed full of omegas, essential oils, peptides and vitamins A and C that leave skin seriously glowy by morning. Not only does this impart radiance but over time, skin appears brighter, fresher, and more even. As with all of Sarah Chapman’s products, the scent means it’s a real sensory delight to use, too. La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ Sun Cream One of the most recognisable facial SPFs on the market, Anthelios’s excellent reputation precedes it. For a factor 50, the texture is unbelievably light, which makes applying the required amount for adequate sun protection a breeze. It sits on the skin like your best moisturiser, and on darker skin tones leaves no ashy tint. Crucially, you can apply the same amount hours later and there’s no pilling. Boots No7 Future Renew Damage Reversal Serum No7 always goes above and beyond to innovate in the skincare space. Their newest launch has some of the most impressive line-reduction science in a long while, thanks to a smart new peptide complex. After about a month, skin is smoother, fresher and generally brighter looking. Whind Marrakech Light Illuminating Face Oil The glow this face oil supplies is golden hour worthy, and the fragrance conjures up scenes of adventure in a warm climate. “If it was a stand alone fragrance, I’d definitely dowse myself in it,” says Jane Gough - my editor. As for its impact on skin, the texture hits that sweet spot between being lightweight enough to absorb, yet rich enough to really nourish. A really reliable option for restoring glow. Until next month take care and be your best self - you deserve it! Rebekah x Health, Beauty & Wellbeing SPF mist. With a micro-fine texture and velvety finish, it sits beautifully on top of foundation and, crucially, helps extend its wear just that bit longer. Just a smaller travel size required please, Kate... Vichy Minéral 89 Eyes with Hyaluronic Acid + Caffeine Vichy do hyaluronic acid well. The brand’s Minéral 89 serum for face is brilliant, as is the lesser known version for eyes. Dryness around the eye area is particularly unforgiving (exacerbating fine lines, giving away a lack of sleep) and this is one of the best antidotes we’ve found. Hyaluronic acid and a touch of shea butter lend immediate moisture relief in the form of a lightweight gel, which absorbs swiftly and sits beautifully under make-up. Shiseido Vital Perfection Night Concentrate You can count on Shiseido for innovation that impresses. The brand’s latest serum targets loss of elasticity with a new Japanese medicinal plant extract. When paired with at- home facial massage, the extract helps stimulate the activity of facial muscles, encouraging definition. Of course no serum can deliver miracles, but for an at-home option, the sculpting and tightening benefits this serum gives are impressive. Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum There’s plenty of viral brilliance in Drunk Elephant’s range (hello, Bronzing Drops and Babyfacial), and we’d like to throw the B-Hydra Serum into the ring. It’s a wonderfully hydrating formula: loaded with hyaluronic acid, ceramides and amino acids in a quenching lotion-gel texture, alleviating dry patches after one application with no stickiness. Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3 Consider Medik8 a vitamin A authority. Their genius Crystal Retinal is one we recommended regularly to friends, family and readers. Not only is retinal more gentle than its sister retinol, but it in Medik8’s instance, also acts 11x faster. It has a smart encapsulation system which means the delivery of the ingredient is one that is gentle, but effective. The ‘ladder’ system is clever too: most people start at level three, and then customise their routine with three more progressive strengths. Clinique Moisture Surge 100 Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator You might be tempted to treat thirsty skin with the richest cream you can find. Clinique’s Moisture Surge, though, makes a case for the opposite. The gel cream is full of hyaluronic acid, cica and fermented aloe to amp up hydration levels to an impressive degree. Don’t be fooled by its lightweight texture: while it absorbs more or less instantly, it keeps skin feeling comfy and hydrated all day long. An excellent choice in summer months too, when richer creams just feel too heavy. Invity Youth Activating Instant Filler You’d be forgiven for approaching anything promising ‘instant filler’ with a degree of scepticism, but I have been taken by this smart innovation (so much so, that I would give the product a beauty award if I could). One vial gives an immediate tightening effect (letting it dry before any next steps is crucial to avoid flakiness and allow makeup to sit well). The tightening effect is not unpleasant: it simply makes skin look firmer, smoother, more lifted. You can use it as often as you like, but I opt for them when skin looks tired in the morning, or before going out. DeloRx The Youth Matrix Activator Created by the brilliant dermatologist Dr. Stefanie Williams, this is a hydrating cream with a complex of four retinoids and niacinamide. It’s especially good for those who want hardworking, active ingredients but also suffer breakouts: its genius is in the non pore-clogging base. While so many products with retinoids and peptides have bases that cause spots, this is lightweight enough for blemish-prone skin to use without panic. Expensive, but smart skincare. Hero Mighty Pimple Patches Original 24 Just how unsettling is it to feel a blemish under the skin, threatening to rear? Less so when you’ve got these pimple patches to hand. One little hydrocolloid sticker brings blemishes to a head and absorbs their gunk by morning. They stick on the skin surprisingly well, so don’t worry about tossing and turning during the night: these are staying put. Beauty Pie Shinkai Electrolyte Drench 3-in-1 Deep Hydrating Gel Cream Bouncy, juicy skin in a single step; this cooling gel streamlines your skincare routine, slipping under sunscreen as a dewy daily moisturiser, doubling up as a serum and moonlighting as a night cream (apply a thicker layer to tap into the skin slugging trend). Hyaluronic acid helps skin to conserve water and a tripeptide complex firms skin over time, with an added antioxidant- rich kombucha extract to defend against environment damage. Good things come in threes. The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% Got rosacea? Small silver tube to the rescue. Azelaic acid is loved by dermatologists for its anti- inflammatory properties, plus it’s proven to reduce redness and smooth out bumpy skin texture. This affordable cream helps to calm flare-ups and plays well with makeup too; there’s no pilling. May 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

Literature Diva by Daisy Goodwin A glorious, deep dive into the love affair between iconic opera star, Maria Callas, the ultimate diva, and Greek shipping tycoon and richest man in the world, Aristotle Onassis. Set in opera houses, chic nightclubs and on super yachts, Diva is an epic rags to riches story about a woman who has the world at her feet but can’t win the heart of the man she loves. Brava! Dominoes by Phoebe McIntosh A powerful and thought-provoking debut novel from a writer destined for greatness. Layla thinks it’s romantic that she and Andy have the same surname but as their wedding draws closer, her best friend Sera is increasingly hostile about biracial Layla settling down with a white man. When Layla discovers that their shared surname has its roots in the slave trade and uncovers the truth of her Jamaican family’s turbulent history, she has a big decision to make about her future. The In Crowd by Charlotte Vassell A second outing for Detective Caius Beauchamp (my newest book boyfriend) in a quirky and twisty thriller about two seemingly unconnected cold cases. But this darkly funny read is also about the sinister influence of the very powerful and the very rich on our everyday lives. Charlotte Vassell deserves to be huge! My Favourite Mistake by Marian Keyes A new Marian Keyes novel is always a special treat, especially when we’re reunited with the Walsh The Hunter by Tana French The queen of the literary thriller returns with this stunning and atmospheric read featuring cynical Chicago detective, Cal Hooper, now retired and living in a close knit, Irish rural community. When local wrong’un Johnny Reddy reappears, after abandoning his family years before, with a get rich quick scheme, it will divide the small town and have tragic and devastating consequences. Annie Bot by Sierra Greer Annie is beautiful, kind and attuned to her boyfriend Doug’s every need and desire, because Annie is actually a top of the range robot powered by sophisticated AI software. As she grows more self-aware, Annie resents being controlled by Doug and yearns for something more from her life. Annie Bot is an exquisitely written, empathetic novel, which asks the question of what it really means to be human. Mrs Quinn’s Rise To Fame by Olivia Ford Do not read this delicious debut novel while hungry as its mouth- watering descriptions of cakes and bakes will send you into a tummy- rumbling decline. At seventy seven, Julia Quinn is good at two things; baking and being married to her devoted husband Bernard. When she wins a spot on the TV show Britain Bakes, Julia finds a new self-confidence but is also forced to confront the secret she’s kept from everyone, including Bernard. family, it’s like catching up with old friends. In My Favourite Mistake, youngest Walsh, Anna, returns from New York suffering a full-blown midlife crisis. When she relocates to rural but glamorous Maumtully for a job soon she’s (literally) putting out fires and reuniting with her old adversary, the very sexy Joey Armstrong. Sweetness In The Skin by Ishi Robinson A dazzling coming of age novel set in ‘90s Jamaica with an unforgettable heroine in Pumkin Patterson. Pumkin is desperate to leave her volatile mother and follow her aunt to France. To raise funds for her French entrance exam, Pumkin starts selling her delicious baked goods but when disaster strikes, she realises she’s not as alone as she thought. The Husbands by Holly Gramazio I guarantee you’ve never read a book quite like The Husbands. It’s laugh out loud funny, perceptive and utterly original. One night, Lauren’s attic starts generating husbands. Some she sends back up the ladder after a few minutes, like the one who doesn’t trim his nostril hair, and some she’d quite like to stick around. But after a year and over two hundred different spouses, Lauren is still no closer to knowing how to choose the right one. A Stranger In The Family by Jane Casey My favourite fictional detective, Maeve Kerrigan, returns in this pleasingly twisty and taut thriller. When a husband and wife are found dead in their bed, supposedly a murder suicide, it quickly transpires that their deaths are not what they seem and are linked to the disappearance of their nine-year- old daughter years before. If that wasn’t enough, tension (of the sexual kind) builds between Maeve and the grumpy but gorgeous DI Josh Derwent. Never have I shipped a fictional couple so hard! The Divorcées by Rowan Beaird In 1950s America, the only way to quickly divorce is in the state of Nevada, so rich women flock to Reno to spend the statutory six weeks on a ‘divorce ranch’. The unhappily married Lois Saunders arrives at the Golden Yarrow to wait it out, where she meets the glamorous Greer. What follows is an exhilarating adventure for prim Lois, who’s dazzled by her new friend, until the glitter wears off in this dark and compelling novel, which fans of Lessons In Chemistry will adore. Meet Me When My Heart Stops by Becky Hunter Prepare to have your heart strings tugged and your tear ducts emptied by this emotional read. Emery is born with a heart defect, which means that her heart can stop when she has a shock and she’s ‘dead’ until it can be restarted. Whenever it happens, Emery is reunited with Nick, whose job on the Other Side is to help people transition. But as she grows older, each time Emery meets Nick, their connection grows stronger and it gets harder and harder to leave him behind. But how can they ever have a future together? Food & Drink Erkan Sahindal - business owner at the Olive Tree on Lincoln Way, Beverley - and accomplished chef shares his recipe for a classic French cake. Frangipane, a classic component of French baking, is a velvety, sweet, filling made of butter, eggs, sugar, almond flour, a bit of all-purpose flour, and a hint of almond extract that gets stirred together into a golden spreadable paste. This smooth nutty cream adds delicious richness and texture when swirled into the almond-scented cake batter, giving an exquisite nutty flavour and tenderness to the crumb. Studded with blueberries and scattered with sliced almonds, this summery loaf is simple yet stunning. Makes: 1 (8½” x 4½”) cake Ingredients Frangipane: ¼ cup (57 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature ½ cup (48 grams) superfine blanched almond flour ¼ cup (50 grams) granulated sugar 2 tablespoons (16 grams) all- purpose flour 1 large egg white (30 grams), room temperature ¼ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon (4 grams) almond extract Batter: ½ cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar 2 large eggs (100 grams), room temperature 1 teaspoon (4 grams) vanilla extract ¼ teaspoon (1 gram) almond extract 1¾ cups (219 grams) plus 1 tablespoon (8 grams) all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon (15 grams) baking powder ½ teaspoon (1.5 grams) salt ½ cup (120 grams) full-fat plain Greek yogurt 1¼ cups (175 grams) fresh blueberries 2 tablespoons (15 grams) sliced almonds Method 1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray an 8½ x 4½ inch loaf pan with baking spray or with flour. Line bottom and all sides of pan with greaseproof paper, letting excess over sides of pan. 2. For frangipane: In a medium bowl, stir butter until creamy. Add almond flour, sugar, all-purpose flour, egg white, salt, and almond extract; stir until well combined. Cover until ready to use. 3. For batter: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter and sugar at medium speed until fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes, stopping to scrape sides Erkans’ Blueberry Frangipane Loaf Cake of bowl. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until well combined after each addition and stopping to scrape sides of bowl. Beat in extracts just until combined. 4. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1¾ cups (219 grams) all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. With mixer on low speed, gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with yogurt, beginning and ending with flour mixture, beating just until combined after each addition, stopping to scrape sides of bowl. 5. In a small bowl, toss together blueberries and remaining 1 tablespoon (8 grams) all-purpose flour. Fold 1 cup (140 grams) blueberries and frangipane into batter. Spread batter to prepared pan. Tap pan on a kitchen towel- lined counter several times to settle batter. Top with remaining ¼ cup (35 grams) blueberries and sliced almonds. 6. Bake for 20 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 325°F (170°C), and bake until golden brown, top feels dry and set, and an instant- read thermometer inserted in centre registers 202°F (94°C) to 210°F (99°C), 55 minutes to 1 hour and 5 minutes more, loosely covering with foil to prevent excess browning, if necessary. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes. Using excess greaseproof paper as handles, remove from pan, and let cool completely on a wire rack. Store in air-tight container for up to 3 days. Food & Drink Listen live on: www.beverleyfm.com No Radio! - Just Ask Alexa to tune in to BeverleyFM The large, open crumb that’s characteristic of ciabatta bread comes from a high hydration level in the dough as well as a poolish, which is a type of preferment (a fermentation starter or, sometimes, a “mother dough”) that gives bread a slightly nutty flavour and thin crust. Pile these rolls high with salami, provolone, and other Italian ingredients for perfect panini! Makes 8 rolls Ingredients Poolish: 1¼ cups plus 3 tablespoons (183 grams) bread flour ¾ cup plus 1 tablespoon (195 grams) water (70°F/21°C) 2 tablespoons (16 grams) all- purpose flour 1/16 teaspoon instant yeast Dough: 1 cup (240 grams) water (60°F/16°C) 2 tablespoons (28 grams) olive oil ½ teaspoon (1.5 grams) instant yeast 2½ cups (318 grams) bread flour ½ cup (63 grams) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 1 tablespoon (9 grams) salt Method 1. For poolish: In a medium bowl, stir together bread flour, ¾ cup plus 1 tablespoon (195 grams) water, all-purpose flour, and yeast until dry ingredients are completely moistened. Cover with plastic wrap, and let stand at room temperature for 14 to 16 hours. 2. For dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, place poolish. Add 1 cup (240 grams) water, oil, and yeast. Add flours and salt, and beat at low speed for 4 minutes. 3. Switch to the dough hook attachment. Beat at medium speed until dough gathers around dough hook and begins to pull away from sides of bowl, 8 to 10 minutes. 4. Oil a large bowl. Place dough in bowl, turning to grease top. Cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm, draft-free place (75°F/24°C) Ciabatta Rolls for 1½ hours, folding dough in bowl after 30 minutes and again after 1 hour. (To fold, use a floured hand to reach under one side of dough, and pull gently over centre; repeat so all 4 sides of dough are folded.) 5. Line a rimmed baking sheet with greaseproof paper. 6. Lightly flour surface with all- purpose flour; turn out dough onto prepared surface, and shape into a 12x6-inch rectangle. Using a bench scraper, cut dough into 8 portions (about 3-inch squares). Carefully transfer dough to prepared pan, lightly stretching dough as needed for even sides. Cover and let rise in a warm, draft- free place (75°F/24°C) until puffed and dough holds an indentation when pressed, 1 to 1½ hours. 7. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). 8. Bake until golden brown and an instant-read thermometer inserted in centre registers 205°F (96°C), 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool completely on wire racks. Store in an airtight container for up 5 days. Tightly wrap in plastic wrap, and freeze for up to 3 months. May 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

The Finance Column with James Cunningham As humans, we’re hard-wired to live in the present – it’s part of our survival instinct. But we all need to be clear about the future life and lifestyle we want if we’re going to get there. As we get older, our priorities and our goals often shift, and getting them clear in our head can be elusive. You don’t need to make a split decision, and you will want time to reflect. But you don’t want to go into retirement without thinking about how you want to spend the rest of your life. After all, if you’re not sure where you’re going, you may end up somewhere you don’t want to be. How do I set my personal goals? Some personal goals are linked to life milestones: stopping work before we’re 60 or starting a family. Others are based on our dreams and ambitions; learning to fly or starting a small business later in life. We might want to give our children the best education we can, go travelling with them, or leave them a good legacy. Some people have the good luck to see their goals quite clearly. But for most of us, goals change the more years we live. What we’ve learned through helping people achieve their life’s ambitions, and goals, is that the really important personal goals that you set should be rooted in your personal values. For example, many of us are passionate about protecting the planet, fighting poverty, or investing responsibly. Understanding what you believe in, makes it simpler and clearer to set goals. Those goals are the foundation of every personal financial plan. As financial advisers, we spend a great deal of time listening to our clients, helping them decide what’s important to them, before even starting to create the plan that will get them there. We all have different goals, which is why any financial plan should be individually tailored to you. Putting a plan into action Talking those personal goals over with us is just the first step. The next step is to look at your current financial landscape – what cash, savings, ISAs, or investments you have, and what different type of pensions you have. Whether you have a workplace pension or a Self- Invested Personal Pension or SIPP, for example. Achieving personal goals is all about putting the money and assets you already have to work, so you can grow your wealth. What if my goals change? We can anticipate the future, but we can’t predict it. A break-up, an unexpected change of job, or medical bill might put a spanner in the works. Our personal goals may change over time and it’s much easier to fine-tune a financial plan that already exists, rather than start from scratch. The longer your relationship with us, the better we can work through those changes together, and help you achieve financial wellbeing – and your goals. If you’d like to talk through your own personal goals, or review your existing ones, please get in touch on 07572 960 986 or by email: james.cunningham@sjpp.co.uk The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be linked directly to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. Setting personal goals and making them happen How do you imagine your future? Cruising the Norfolk Broads by narrowboat, or relocating to the Bahamas? Maybe you’ve decided that you’d like to start that micro business you always dreamed of, or move closer to family? So content on the water, looking at open spaces, with the calmness and quietness being good for my body and soul as I feel myself chilling out. Being a fabulous way to enjoy multiple towns, cities & often countries, with the added benefit of unpacking just the once, your floating hotel transports you along to your next exciting destination. There is a saying “there is a ship that suits everyone” and this also can be applied to those sailing the rivers of the world. The Rhine & Danube are the most popular rivers offer the greatest choice of ships and usually most first time river cruisers opt for these rivers. Ships vary in standard and size from 50 guests up to 440, although the latter normally sails with guests in the high 300’s and the size of the ship can determine the itinerary too. The larger 440 passenger ships only sail the Rhine, travelling between Cologne to Amsterdam and in reverse making it a great choice for younger groups and families , as they can offer cabins that will home 6 Adults which are popular with groups looking to enjoy Dusseldorf, Amsterdam & more destinations, along with the fabulous spa, extensive gym, up market buffet meals and all-inclusive drinks!!! I am not a lover of buffet food however, with the choice of fresh fruit & vegetables is amazing and the cooking stations for meat & fish, my son would absolutely love a few days on board. All river ships include full board, whilst many include wine, beer & soft drinks with lunch & dinner or the all-inclusive drinks package.. Generally breakfast is an open sitting for a couple of hours with an early & late risers offering too. Dinner is generally 7pm after a short briefing of the next day’s activity program and most ships give you a choice to sit where and with whom you choose. The new modern ships are so quiet, you often do not know that you are moving! The general rules regarding accommodation are that the lower deck cabins have a window which you need to stand up to view out of (except the new concept shown!) and upper decks offer panorama balconies with full floor to ceiling windows which drop down creating and open air space. Swimming pool, although not large, are offered on most ships, some are indoor, others offer open air pools on the sun deck with water jets, whilst sailing the Sun deck can be closed on stretches of the river where there are bridges are low ….. this is of course for your own safety. Many River Cruise lines include a selection of shore excursions, drinks, and some even include gratuities for the staff. Flights can be tailored to your requirements, along with pre and post stays and transfers to your ship. In general you would expect to pay a higher price for a river cruise than those sailing the high seas, but you need take into account the extra inclusions along with a more personal service. As an idea of cost this summer there are 7 night cruises, sailing aboard new ships starting from £1395.00, with very little spending money needed and super excursions included each day this is great value. For non flyers we can offer cruises via the Hull to Europort ferry service with a connection to your ship via coach or rail, or Eurostar from London. The options are endless. If you have never ventured on a river cruise, you feel very little movement, don’t lose sight of land and have very little swell, in fact I don’t recall anyone over the years saying they did not enjoy their experience. Why don’t you give this wonderful way to explore in style enjoying great sights, good food & service a try? Looking further afield there are wonderful river options on the Nile, in Vietnam & Cambodia, USA & India …. there is so much choice. Where ever in the world you are looking to travel, we look forward to help you make wonderful memories be it a UK break or a worldwide adventure. Travel is good for the mind & soul and the memories made will be treasured for a life time. We look forward to hearing from you best wishes

A Thursday warm up at popular independent cafe Poma kicks the festival off with fast-rising songstress (and previous performer at the festival in 2021) Rachel Croft, with support from another popular local ‘Anglo-Americana’ artist Jessica Lawson. Friday is typically the big concert and this year is no different; the internationally renowned British singer-songwriter and virtuoso guitarist John Smith takes to St Mary’s Church, with support from high-profile musician and published author (Harper Collins) Tara MacLean - all the way from the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Saturday is traditionally the biggest day and 2024 will be no different. With the famous ‘Charity Buskathon’ (this year raising funds for Hope in Action), extensive parade of folk-dance teams - and dance performances - throughout the town, ‘acoustic brunch’ events at Atom Bar and St Nicholas’ Church, there’s a lot happening before even noon! Saturday evening sees the famous Celidih (Armstrong Centre), and Celtic-folk supergroup CALAN perform at St Nicholas’ Church on Saturday evening, supported by upcoming folk trio (and from Beverley!) Hase Waits. In 2024 the celebrated ‘Late Night Club’ will take place at Atom Bar and will prove to be a great way to finish off an action-packed Saturday - in preparation for another busy day on Sunday culminating in the much-loved a cappella group from Zimbabwe: Black Umfolosi at East Riding Theatre. As always there are lots of free events on offer and lots of opportunities for musicians to get involved. The Monks Walk and The Sun Inn will be providing their own (free) offerings with popular acts such as Hillbilly Troupe, Paddy and the Portermen, and The Laggy Band - and will be the host of numerous open sessions where anyone can join in. Phil Simpson, organiser said “We’re delighted to welcome such a varied lineup this year - we’re particularly proud to have secured John Smith (pictured above) who is having his biggest year to date - but as always there is something on offer for everyone. ‘Folk’ to me is less about genre, more about ‘community’. We hope you’ll join in the fun!” Involving the town is at the heart of the event and 2024 will also see the usual extra events happening in parallel to the main programme; school workshops at Tickton and Molescroft primary schools, and a special performance to the residents at Beverley Parklands Care Home. What’s On Brighton 1974 was the launchpad for the greatest pop group since the Beatles. It also kickstarted a global phenomenon that, half a century on - courtesy of the hit jukebox musical Mamma Mia!, two multi- million dollar blockbuster films and the Abba Voyage “Abbatar” attraction in London – is arguably bigger than it ever was. 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the band’s game changing win and the UK’s deep-seated love-affair with Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Anni-Frid. As Benny’s son Ludvig – one of the architects of Abba Voyage –puts it: “In a strange way, Abba belonged to Britain more than their home country, Sweden.” “We were lucky not winning in 1973,” Andersson said, “because the next year we had Waterloo, and the competition was held in England. That was a big difference to winning something in Azerbaijan or Luxembourg. When you’re in England, it makes ripples.” Certainly before Brighton, they were unknown here in the UK – and we were all rooting for our entry - Olivia Newton-John and Long Live Love. But the UK soon became transfixed by Abba. Within a year, their Eurovision- bounce had propelled the Swedes all the way to another British beach town, Torbay, with Tony Blackburn introducing Abba’s performance of SOS on BBC1’s summer variety show Seaside Special. In January 1976, with Mamma Mia, they knocked Queen’s all- conquering Bohemian Rhapsody off the UK Number One slot. A year after that, on 10 February 1977, Abba played their first concert in the UK, with all 2,397 seats at the Birmingham Odeon sold out in an instant. For the four members of the band, that success was hard-earned. All had individually been making music professionally since the 1960s. By the early 70s they were a foursome comprising two couples (Agnetha and Bjorn, Benny and Anni-Frid), playing cabaret under the name Festfolk, “which is a pun that can mean either ‘party people’ or ‘engaged people’. They all hated performing “silly cabaret stuff…but this was in 1971 and they had to put food on the table. They thought: ‘We can’t go on like this. Let’s try to write some pop music in English and see what happens.’ ” The result was People Need Love, which became a 1972 hit in Scandinavia, Germany and Holland. They thought, ‘Yeah, we’re on the way to something.’ Abba’s Eurovision success lit the blue touchpaper for 50 years of Abbamania in the UK. Everyone can sing along to their hits: Waterloo, Mamma Mia, SOS, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Money Money Money, Take a Chance on Me, Chiquitita, Gimme Gimme Gimme, The Winner Takes It All. As Ludvig Andersson says, when reflecting on choosing London as the location for the ‘ABBA Voyage’ concert experience, the UK isn’t just where Abbamania began. The UK “is the place that keeps it alive”. Abba fans in East Yorkshire can relive ABBA’s Eurovision success this November when the Abba Reunion Tribute Show returns to Beverley for 2 nights in Beverley Minster. The annual event is a fund raiser for the Minster and sells out every year! Motoring - In association with Lairgate Motors This month Elliot Johnson takes a look at the cost savings for electric cars that you can impliment. If you’re thinking of changing your car, it may make sense to go for an electric or hybrid vehicle (which uses a combination of petrol and an electric motor). After all, they work out cheaper to run than a petrol or diesel car – as long as you do most of the charging at home – and it’s better for the environment. Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular, with sales up by 17.8% in 2023*. There are now almost a million electric cars on the road, plus over 500,000 hybrids. But, before you make the move, think about how you will go about charging your EV. SAFETY FIRST If you’re planning on charging your EV at home with a standard three- pin socket, then have a rethink. It will be slow and it’s also deemed as unsafe by the Energy Savings Trust. So, if you have the space to charge an EV at your property, make sure you look into installing an EV charger. CHOOSING A HOME CHARGER Some car dealerships may offer a free charger when you buy your EV, but not all chargers work with all electricity tariffs. And this means you could end up spending more in the long term. So, research the tariffs and charger requirements first and pick one that works best for you. An EV charger will cost from £500 to £1,000, plus installation. Find installers approved by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles at gov.uk/electric-vehicle- chargepoint-installers. SELECT AN EV TARIFF Electricity providers have special EV tariffs with discounted unit rates to help users charge their vehicles at home in the most affordable way. The most common is the day and night tariff rate, with night being cheaper. You won’t find EV tariffs on comparison sites, but Smart Home Charge (smarthomecharge. co.uk/cost-to-charge) sets out what charger and tariff might be best for your car. It’s worth noting that you’ll need a smart meter. If you have solar power, you can also use that energy, but make sure your charger is compatible. WHAT IF I’M A TENANT? If you rent your home, you need permission from your landlord to install a charger. There’s plenty of reasons for them to agree, including government grants. Landlords can claim 75% of the costs – up to £350 per socket – if they install an EV charge point at a residential property they own. See find-government-grants.service. gov.uk for details. NO DRIVEWAY OR GARAGE? If you live in a terraced house or a flat, you may be tempted to run a cable across the pavement. But do check the rules with your local council; you could face legal costs if a pedestrian trips and is hurt. Instead, take advantage of public charge points, often at supermarkets, which have competitive rates for you to charge while you shop. And hotels may offer guests free charging. Charging at home is the cheapest option; costs can mount up at public EV points Find a public charger l ZAPMAP This app helps you locate chargers across the country and includes access to a thriving EV community who share tips and tricks. l BP PULSE Subscribe to this charging point locator app and benefit from lower rates. l CHARGER MAP Visit maps.dft.gov.uk/ev- chargingmap to see how many charging points are in your area. “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out” is the proverb often quoted by us gardeners who are only too aware of the capriciousness of our English weather. The maxim was originally recorded by Dr Thomas Fuller in 1732, but it may have been coined earlier. The ‘clout’ means your coat or winter clothing, but ‘May’ can be interpreted as either referring to the end of the month and its fickle weather, or when the May (Hawthorn) bursts into flower. Its white blossoms herald the arrival of variety in the plant world: intense pinks of Red Campion and Ragged Robin in our hedgerows and purple and mauve shades of Wisteria and Lilacs in our gardens. Bluebells will be carpeting Burton Bushes and many other woodlands. Our English Bluebell has been victim of the successful Spanish Bluebell (introduced as long ago as the late seventeenth century). A National Trust guide to Bluebells states: “Almost half the world’s Bluebells are found in the UK. A colony takes a long time to establish. Bluebell bulbs contain muselage and inulin which was used for fixing feathers to arrows and for book-binding. The Elizabethans used the starch- like juice to stiffen their fancy ruff collars.” Our native Bluebell has narrow leaves, deep blue-coloured flowers on one side of their drooping stems with creamy- coloured pollen and a sweet scent. The Spanish one has broad leaves, pale blue bell-shaped flowers which spread open at the end and they hang all round the upright stem with blue/green pollen and no scent. There will be many hybrids by their interbreeding of these two species over the years. They can be vigorous and easily spread, so we are encouraged to support our native species wherever possible. IN THE GARDEN Easter is well behind us and some of us may have cracked on with sowing and planting out during the winter break – dodging the wind and rain. Time well tell if it proves to be an advantage, but do not worry - things do not romp away in April and if you feel that you are a little behind getting going now in May is not too late. I am thrilled that the pruning of my wisteria has proved profitable. Many racemes are appearing and I cannot wait for it to burst into flower. It is a plant which offers much to the garden, not only with its glorious blooms but with lovely foliage which gives texture and colour right through to the autumn. Many of the bulbs are over now and need to be dead-headed. Compacted clumps of daffodils need breaking up and moving, and with a bit of feed will reward you again next year. I am thinking about what to put in my tubs when the bulbs are finally finished and I start anew. A good principle to bear in mind is always to have something that is stunning and something that drips over the sides of the container, and something to fill the gap in between. I want to get more height in this year and I looking for something tall and sculptural to put in the centre such as Pennisetun glaucum ‘purple majesty’ with its dark glossy foliage or possibly a standard Fuschia. I tried Gaura last year which gave a lovely light, airy effect along with the height. It looked beautiful wafting in a breeze. The hanging baskets will need attention and as I have cut back the fronds of last year’s ferns I am going to use them to line the bottom the baskets and then put the liner on top. It should give a more natural effect to the basket as I prefer not to use Sphagnum moss these days. ON THE PLOT I have put my potatoes in the ground and feel ready to tackle all the other jobs on the allotment. My husband has been working hard to get rid of perennial weeds – docks, nettles, couch grass, bindweed and horsetail. They never go on the compost. I collect the dandelions to give to a friend who has hens. They love them, but so do the bees. Dandelions are good pollinators so getting rid of all weeds is a balance as every one will have its place in terms of food, protection and habitat for wild life. In an article by Frances Tophill from BBC’s ‘Gardeners’ World’ she says: “A growing number of people have begun celebrating plants which used to be called weeds. These plants have even started to pop up in show gardens in recent years. But when Chelsea Flower Show itself acknowledges the rebranding of ‘weeds’ as ‘wild flowers’, ‘resilient plants’ or ‘hero plants’, as it has this year (2023), featuring them alongside world class floral displays, you know things are serious.’ Of course this does not apply to invasive plants such as Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam and Giant Hogweed which must be reported and disposed of professionally. Many weeds have deep roots which help to store carbon and play an important part within a plant community, fixing nitrogen and providing mycchorizal associations. So perhaps we should allow a few here and there. The poet Norman Nicholson (1914- 87) was a weed lover: Some people are flower lovers. I’m a weed lover. Weeds don’t need planting in a well- drained soil: They don’t ask for fertilizer or bits of rag to scare away the birds. They come without invitation; And they don’t take the hint when you want them to go. Weeds are nobody’s guests; More like squatters… ...Flowers are for wrapping in cellophane to present as a bouquet; Flowers are for prize arrangements in vases and silver tea-pots; Flowers are for plaiting into funeral wreaths. You can keep your flowers. Give me weeds! (the opening and closing of Weeds) I thought that I might try to grow a sweet potato using one from a shop. You cannot simply put them in the ground like a true potato but you need to rest one, pointed end down, in a container of water with about one third exposed. It will grow shoots called ‘slips’ which you twist off and plant up. It will take four to five months to mature but beware: its vine can easily get out of control – it crawls everywhere. The leaves are edible. I’ll give it a try and report back! Happy gardening. Sarah x ALL ABOUT PLANTS, GARDENS and VEGETABLE PATCHES Gardening - with Sarah King May 2024 Get Your Business Noticed

The Last Word FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife and Mum to two teenagers! Reclaiming space at home Why is there always ‘stuff’ in your house that needs clearing out? It’s a never-ending cycle! I’m currently having such a good clear out of ‘stuff.’ I’m usually one of those people who thinks things in good condition will come in handy one day, but over the last couple of years I’ve become much better at the Marie Kondo way of getting rid of things. She’s all about decluttering being a joyful task rather than a chore, saying: “We should be choosing what we keep – not what we get rid of.” So these days, I look at something and ask myself if it sparks joy in me. If it doesn’t, out it goes (well, usually, I’m not perfect all the time!) What I do know, is that I feel so much happier and more positive when bags and boxes of ‘stuff’ leave the house. As William Morris once said: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” Wise words. Yay! It’s May! I love it when May comes around. It is my favourite month, not least because it’s my birthday and my wedding anniversary! The blossom tress are in full bloom and we normally see forget-me- nots too (my favourite flower) although, at the time of writing, I haven’t seen any yet! The days are longer, it’s definitely getting warmer and it’s almost Summer. When the sun shines, I feel happier and more motivated. I bet you do too. Everything seems more possible. And remember, we get two bank holidays this month! What’s not to love? So, I wish you all a very Happy May and hope you enjoy it as much as I plan to! Even Emily Brontë agrees with me! I found this fantastic quote from Emily Brontë which perfectly sums up May! “May is the month of expectation, the month of wishes, the month of hope.” Yes, I love that so much! Scottish poet James Thomson put it like this: “Among the changing months, May stands confest the sweetest, and in fairest colours dressed.” Have a great May everyone!
