House & Home July/August 2023 Get Your Business As we have just enjoyed a very hot and sunny June last January’s New Year’s resolutions seem like a very distant memory. What were your resolutions? Perhaps it was to use the gym membership you signed up for and have been paying out for since the previous January. You may have cut down on alcohol and started eating more fruit and veg. Or possibly you considered making some changes to benefit the planet and the environment. If the third resolution listed above resonates with you, you are not alone. Many around the world want to improve their habits and change their lifestyle to take less and give more to our beautiful planet earth home. You may be contemplating what you can do to reduce your use of plastic and actively make an effort to recycle more. You might start walking or taking the bus to work to reduce your carbon footprint. Or you might abandon fast fashion brands and invest in sustainable clothing. Furthermore, energy consumption is a topic on many people’s minds for both ecological and economic reasons. Interestingly, there is one solution that works to help in both regards, reducing your emissions and your bills. What is this solution? It’s down to the marvellous developments in the harnessing of solar energy. The Rise of Solar Energy As industry experts URBN Solar in Beverley confirm, there are both “economic and environmental benefits” to be found when consumers make changes to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by utilising the technology available in the field of solar energy. Solar power is one of the best clean sources of electricity that offers immeasurable potential with no pollution created as a result. By capturing sunlight through solar panels, which then convert the rays into electrical energy, the power for most household appliances can be generated swiftly and efficiently. An example that shows the power of solar energy is that one rooftop solar array could generate the energy needed to give power to a whole home. With so many benefits and so much potential, it’s clear why solar power is rising in popularity and why so many people are eagerly making changes to take advantage of it. Due to cost savings and environmental compatibility, renewable energy is becoming attractive, with solar power offering one of the most reliable Use the Sun to Save The Earth and efficient solutions. In many respects, solar power looks to grow to become an even more accessible energy source in the years to come. Solar Power in the UK Contrary to popular belief, sunshine is abundant in the UK and has the perfect geographical location to make the most of this surplus. Many parts of the UK including East Yorkshire experience high levels of sun exposure, which makes it ideal to take the lead in generating electricity from the sun’s rays. As technology makes this energy source even more straightforward and cheaper, solar power systems are becoming reasonable solutions for businesses and homes. The government in the UK is playing a part in encouraging people to jump on the solar power bandwagon. New tariffs and financial incentives are making the idea even more attractive and offsetting the initial expense involved in adopting solar power technology. Across the country, individuals and companies alike are steps away from traditional fossil fuels that are expensive and kill the earth and towards renewable sources that are cheaper and better for the planet. For many people, the transition is a no-brainer, offering more benefits than drawbacks. House & Home Continued page 8 There’s a lot to love when it comes to period properties, especially all the special details that give them a unique character. But, how do you respect these features whilst creating a home that still feels contemporary? Period living rooms, in particular, need to feel as functional and welcoming in the 21st century as they did over a hundred years ago. The good news, is that it’s totally achievable to maintain all the things that make your period home special, all whilst updating it to feel in the present day. So, whether your period home is Edwardian, Victorian, Georgian, or something else entirely, we’ve got inspirational, expert-led advice on how to decorate a period living room to help you make the most of your space. Respect the history of the home First thing’s first, stay true to the intended style of your home and its design quirks. The key is to work with your space, rather than against it. Save key period features – dado rails and ceiling roses, for example – and work them into your interior plans. ‘Respecting the period and architecture of your home is pivotal to a successful interior scheme,’ says interior designer, Nadine Aston-Clarke. ‘Avoid clashing styles and materials and think about how to draw elements from your home into your designs. Getting the basics such as the appropriate cornice and joinery profiles is a subtle but effective way to ensure that you stay true to your home. From there you can layer on your own tastes and possessions knowing you’ve got solid foundations.’ Focus on architectural details Chris Harndsworth, interior expert at Reclaim UK, advises: ‘To make the most of the period features in your living room while still maintaining a contemporary, on-trend look, you should begin by focusing on the architectural details of the space. ‘If your living room has beautiful period features like high ceilings, intricate mouldings, or wood panelling, you could paint the walls in a neutral shade to provide a modern backdrop and accentuate the beauty of the features. You can then add a few pieces of furniture that blend traditional and contemporary styles, such as a mid-century modern sofa with a classic wooden armchair. You can also incorporate some statement lighting to bring a modern touch to the space, such as an industrial- style pendant light or a vintage chandelier. ‘The advantage of this approach is that it allows you to create a balanced look that captures the charm of the period features while still feeling modern and on-trend,’ Chris continues. ‘It also gives you the flexibility to swap out the furniture and decor to keep the look up-to-date as trends come and go.’ How to decorate a period living room Get the balance between traditional and contemporary just right. House & Home Continued page 10 Choose a timeless sofa Your sofa is likely to be the most prominent piece of furniture, so getting it right is essential. In a period living room, opt for a sofa that is timeless in style as opposed to trend-led, and it will look as good in the future as it did in the past. Vicki Fewster, interior stylist at Style Haus, advises: ‘When choosing your sofa for your period living room, you’ll want something that screams classic and timeless. Fabrics such as velvet have always been in style but are currently enjoying a spike in popularity as part of retro-revival and luxe living trends. ‘Other styles such as Chesterfield sofas, whether in leather or fabric, also work to bring that traditionally elegant and classic look which can complement a period home wonderfully. If you’re concerned about crossing the fine line between classic and old-fashioned, you can put a modern spin on your sofa with accessories that bring in an on-trend look. Cushions with contrasting patterns and colours can work for a maximal style or you can opt for a blanket in a neutral colour to soften the impact of a bolder sofa.’ Choose ornate decor The final flourishes not only allow you to add your own personality but work in harmony with the decorative elements that make period homes so special. ‘Vintage vases, intricate lamps and coffee tables with regal finishes are all ways to pay homage to your homes period past without committing too much to the theme,’ explains Vicki. ‘If you’re unsure where to start looking for these items, looking in second- hand shops or vintage interior stores is one way to try and find these gems, and you’ll be able to select items that work with your existing theme. ‘The period style is all about exuding class and elegance but still having that modern edge, so think of smaller things that you can put in your rooms that radiate this, such as gold or silver candle holders, paintings or prints, flowers and even bigger elements like curtains or mirrors.’ Pick a pattern From delicate florals to awning stripes, patterns lend themselves well to period spaces and can add interest to a room. In a period living room you can contrast traditional prints and patterns with minimalist modern furniture, or vice versa. ‘If you’re keen to incorporate these into your space remember that sometimes less is more,’ warns Vicki. ‘You may want to opt for a chair that has biophilic elements to it, or curtains that have a subtle animal print. Allow these pieces to stand out within the room without needing to compete with other patterns.’ Embrace natural materials ‘Period styles hark back to a time when we lived differently, and because of that, natural materials were more present in the home,’ says Vicki. ‘If you’re lucky enough to have exposed brick in the home, think about how you can restore this and make it a focal point in your space. ‘When it comes to flooring, we often see wood or wood-style flooring in these spaces as they July/August 2023 Get Your Business

House & Home open the room up and bounce around the light. If you do decide to go for this you can always layer a rug over the top to add softness and warmth.’ Other natural materials such as wool, steel, brass and rattan can also work great in a period living room. Look to throws, rugs and hard furniture to bring in these natural elements. Get your colour palette right The great thing about period homes is that they offer a wealth of opportunity when it comes to colour – there’s no need to keep things neutral, and you can get just about as experimental as you want. ‘Your colour scheme will most likely be centred around your personal tastes, but it’s important to think this through as colour can determine the look and feel of the space,’ says Vicki. ‘If you’re looking to create a cosy, warming room you should look to deeper, warmer colours such as navy, deep greens or even purples as these will bring the classic look but make the room feel inviting. ‘However, if you’d like to open up the space and bring light, you only need to look at shows like Bridgerton to take inspiration from that pastel colour scheme; blues, pinks, yellows, oranges and greens in lighter shades will bring a bright, fresh look and feel that will complement the period style perfectly.’ Buoyant Atlantis corner group, with pouffe. TEL 01482 212525 Germany … Starting closer to home this country offers so many holiday options River cruising, Christmas Markets, wine & beer festivals, great cities including many Hanseatic ports. Stunning scenery from hills clad with Vines, lakes, mountains, it is a destination offering something to suit any traveller wishing to fly, take the train or travel by coach on one of the many tours/river cruises for sale. Firstly let’s look at the Rivers. The Rhine is well known throughout the world for its castles & legends. Many forget Germany has many numerous rivers on which you can sail. There are many different itineraries taking in the Moselle, Saar, Main plus over the continental divide along the Main Danube Canal down to Nuremburg. On the Eastern side of Germany the Oder & the Havler pass through the old Prussian states, wonderful for those looking for lots of historical sights. The same can be said heading South along the Elbe with visits including Meissen, Dresden and usually finishing in Prague. There are so many options and it is a fabulous way to visit multiple sights yet only unpacking the once. Looking for a city break, Cologne is a lovely city standing on the banks of the Rhine, with its UNESCO Cathedral, Gothic architecture, Art museums and no less than 7 Christmas Market. Berlin offers direct flights from Leeds Bradford and is a city steeped in history. With the city split into two for many years the East has retained many of its old buildings, with an abundance of museums of art museums, the 18th century Brandenburg Gate a must see, makes this is a super destination for a weekend break. Hamburg on the northern coast makes for a lovely city break, quite lively on a weekend. One must see attraction here is miniaturwunderland.com Do take a look at this amazing miniature scale of our World’s famous sites & make sure you make it part of your stay. Cruise ships also visit Hamburg along with other Hanseatic ports on the Northern coast for example Warnemunde & Rostock. Munich, is an exciting city with much to see and is very famous for its Oktober Fest, the annual beer festival. Lesser known are the wine festivals but if you can hit a town when this is happening I can guarantee you will enjoy a few good days of wine sampling. They are held throughout the summer from the time they bottle the wine from the previous years grapes. Wurzburg is one of my favourite haunts. Travelling further south and towards Switzerland & Austria you will find traditional towns, stunning lakes and mountains. For the independent traveller I find travelling by car in Germany easy as the road network is good and it allows you to go at your own pace. Rail is also an option, by hopping from place to place we can create you a super combination of cities. For those not looking to wander on their own there are many escorted tours available travelling overland by sea & coach, or flying to Germany. I know you will not see everything in one holiday and this country warrants more than one visit. Greece … renowned for many beautiful small islands, stunning beaches and turquoise seas along with family run tavernas serving typical Greek food. This popular destination during our summer has a good choice of flights to various islands. I could just do with a quick week out here myself right now! But, let’s not dismiss the mainland or its capital Athens, a great place to holiday year round steeped in history with amazing artifacts in the National Archaeological Museum, well worth a good days viewing. Solos welcome please ask for prices Culture seekers I can highly recommend a tour of the ancient sights. This can be done on an escorted coach holiday or for something a little different, I opted to travel aboard the Galileo sailing from Piraeus. This small ship cruise circles the Peloponnese peninsular allowing you to enjoy guided visits to the ancient sites each day plus includes a passage through the Corinth Canal. Our historians on board ensured we got the best out of our visits with lectures on board each evening and as I opted for an autumn departure when the heat was not so intense. Another area of Greece often overlooked found way up North is Greece’s 2nd largest city of Thessaloniki which can be twinned with relaxation on the beach in Halkidiki. I have to admit, one thing to do on my bucket list is to visit Meteora Monastery a UNESCO sight perched high on the edge of a sheer drop and the area of monasteries can be visited as a day outing from Athens. Georgia … a very popular area for 7 or 8 day escorted tours of the country or available as a longer tour combined with Armenia & Azerbaijan. Georgia stands on the intersection of Eastern Europe & Western Asia and is part of the old silk road that has been a trading route for centuries. This country has an air of mystery surrounding it, flanking the main crest of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, with a deep & rich history. A treasure trove of ancient cultures awaits. You along with vineyards, snow-capped mountains & welcoming people. Travelling to Georgia by air with Turkish airlines is the most popular route via Istanbul into Tbilisi the countries capital city, which has a combination of the past and present. From mid January to April the countries mountains offer excellent skiing terrain also popular with snow boarders. Grenada … known as the spice island is covered with flowers and nutmeg trees it feels like a giant garden and I have to say, I loved my visit to the botanical gardens. Grenada is frequently within a Caribbean cruise itinerary, the most popular way to visit along with combination of other Islands. But, should you just wish to fly out and holiday in Grenada that is not an issue and the island offers a warm welcome, blue skies, sea and waterfalls making it a super destination for winter sunshine. Guernsey … without leaving the UK, this little gem in the English Channel has a continental feel and can be twinned with Jersey as a two centre holiday. With reminders from WW2 when the Island was under German Occupation to Walking the Island coastal trail in 5 days, visits to the Islands of Sark & Herm are also just a short ferry away, there is much to do on this little gem. There are direct flight from Leeds Bradford to Guernsey in the summer or you can fly from Humberside to Jersey for a twin centre option. n.b Passports are not required for travel to the Channel Islands! With so many destinations available to travel to around our wonderful world, the time to see them is upon us and I would recommend a holiday as a great tonic, as the saying goes “A change is as good as a rest”. We look forward to fulfilling your holiday dreams and creating wonderful memories for you to treasure in 2023, 2024 and on sale now … wonderful bucket list adventures for 2025

Health & Environment Most of our journeys in are made on four wheels. In the UK, even trips under two miles are made by a car or van 60% of the time. And if that car is fuelled by petrol or diesel, that’s one mighty carbon footprint. Less than 2% of all journeys are by bike, according to the Department of Transport – which is odd, given the benefits to our health, our bank balances and the environment. Meanwhile, men make more than three times as many cycling journeys as women according to Cycling UK (cyclinguk.org). So what’s stopping women? ‘Not knowing what to wear, where to ride or how to get the right bike are all things that women worry about,’ says Kirsti Grayson of Go Velo. ‘But the one thing that’s most apparent is that women feel unsure riding in today’s traffic.’ Sound like you? Here’s how to feel safer in the saddle… GET CYCLING CONFIDENT Whether you’re a novice or have just lost confidence, British Cycling runs women-only Breeze cycling groups (letsride.co.uk/ breeze) in the UK. Rides are guided by trained female ride leaders and are aimed at novice women riders and held on mostly traffic-free, quiet roads. If you’re unsure about riding on the road, try an adult training course to learn basic bike-handling and riding in traffic. Courses are available at bikeability. org. Keep your bike well serviced and consider attending a cycle maintenance course so you know how to change a tyre or fix a dropped chain. Cycling UK runs courses throughout the country. CYCLING SAFELY ● Wear bright clothing so you’re clearly visible to other road users. ● Road position is key to a safe, successful road-cycling journey, as is staying observant. Ride about 1m away from the kerb. This enables drivers to see you and allows you to see ahead more clearly. Research shows that, when overtaking, drivers will typically give you the same amount of room again. ● When approaching junctions, look over your right shoulder, move confidently out into the centre of your lane, preventing vehicles from overtaking you and ensuring you are clearly visible at all times. Only signal if necessary. ● Use your ears as much as your eyes. Be vigilant and aware, but still confident. THE RIGHT BIKE HYBRID: Probably the best choice for beginners, as it’s designed for general purpose use and riding on multiple surfaces. MOUNTAIN: More gears than a hybrid and thick, knobbly tyres. Good for mostly off-road riding. ROAD BIKE OR RACER: Best suited to more experienced cyclists who only ride on the road. OR HIRE… You’ll find public bike-hire schemes in almost every major city these days that allow you to rent by the minute, from pedal powered bikes attached to fixed bays to dockless e-cycles that can be located via apps using GPS. CYCLE TO WORK In the UK, you can sign up to the Cycle to Work Scheme and save at least 48.25% of the cost of a new bike. It allows employers to pay for the cycle. Employees then repay the cost, tax-free. There was a £1,000 ceiling on the value of the bike, but this has been reversed so that e-cycles can be included. Check with your employer or visit: www.bike2workscheme.co.uk/ EQUIPMENT ESSENTIALS ● A helmet - not compulsory in the UK, but highly recommended. It should sit over the front of your head and the strap should feel snug. ● High visibility or bright clothing. ● A bell and lights to alert others. ● A hardened-steel lock. ● Tools and a spare inner tube in case of a puncture - or try Zéfal Sealant Spray, which fixes the puncture and inflates the tyre. Need a boost? Here’s the low-down on the latest electric bikes: ● You still have to pedal, so you’ll get the health benefits of cycling without the pain. ● You can now get a decent electric bike from about £500. The battery is the biggest cost, and pricier models have bigger batteries, so can go further. They won’t go faster, though, because electric bikes are limited by law to 15.5mph. ● As long as the bike is classed as an ‘electricallyassisted pedal cycle’ (EAPC), you don’t need a licence, insurance, registration or a crash helmet, although wearing a cycle helmet is recommended. Because EAPCs are classified as bicycles, you can ride them anywhere bikes are allowed. ● Almost all electric bikes work by sensing when the pedals are being turned and adding a suitable boost. All you have to do is set the amount of power you want, from gentle assistance to providing nearly all the power. The settings are entered on a handle bar mounted display, which also shows your speed and the amount of charge left in the battery. ● The more power you use, the shorter the distance before you run out of juice. To get going, you pump the pedals as usual. Some bikes also have a throttle to provide an injection of xtra power to get you off a standing start. There are more traffic-free cycle routes than you might think – old railway lines, canal paths and forest trails. To find a route on the 6,000 miles of National Cycle Network visit sustrans.org.uk The joy of two wheels! A bicycle’s carbon footprint is less than a tenth than that of a car. Food & Drink Erkan Sahindal - business owner at the Olive Tree on Lincoln Way, Beverley - and accomplished chef shares his recipe for a summery veggie tart using easy filo as opposed to shortcrust pastry. ➤ SERVES 6 ➤ PREPARATION TIME 20 MINS ➤ COOKING TIME 30 MINS You can use a mixture of green and yellow courgettes or small summer squash, if you can find them. INGREDIENTS 5 sheets filo pastry Olive oil 250g (5oz) ricotta 3 eggs, beaten 3tbsp basil leaves, shredded Pinch of grated nutmeg 75g (2½oz) Parmesan, freshly grated 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 courgettes, thinly sliced ¼tsp dried chilli flakes ½tsp ground or crushed sumac Large handful pine nuts METHOD Step 1 Heat oven to 200°C (gas mark 6). Grease a large tart or pie tin and line with the 5 sheets of filo pastry, brushing them with a little oil and slightly overlapping each sheet. Step 2 Transfer to the oven and cook for 7-10 mins, or until just golden. In a bowl, beat the ricotta with the eggs, basil, grated nutmeg, two thirds of the Parmesan and the garlic. Set aside. Step 3 Spread the pastry with the ricotta mix, then top with the courgette slices. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese, the chilli and the sumac. Season with salt. Bake for 30 mins, or until the filling is golden. Scatter over the pine nuts about 5 mins before removing from oven. Erkan’s Mango ice cream with cardamom-scented coconut sprinkles ➤ SERVES 8 - 10 ➤ PREPARATION TIME 15 MINS ➤ FREEZING TIME 5 HRS ➤ COOKING TIME 8 MINS ➤ EASY This mango ice cream is like sunshine in a slice. Top with crispy cardamom-scented coconut, or enjoy as is – it’s delicious either way. INGREDIENTS 400ml double cream 100ml condensed milk 200ml mango pulp 2 tbsp milk powder For the cardamom-scented coconut sprinkles 100g coconut flakes 3 tbsp maple syrup 10 cardamom pods, seeds crushed using a pestle and mortar, pods discarded pinch of sea salt flakes METHOD Step 1 Line a 900g loaf tin with baking parchment, leaving some over hanging to help you lift out the ice cream later. Whisk the cream and condensed milk together in a large bowl until well combined. Add the mango pulp and milk powder, then whisk until completely smooth and slightly thickened. Pour into the loaf tin and freeze for at least 5 hrs or overnight until solid. Will keep frozen for up to two months. Step 2 To make the sprinkles, heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 6 and spread the coconut flakes over a baking tray lined with baking parchment. Drizzle over the maple syrup, then season with the crushed cardamom seeds and a generous pinch of sea salt flakes. Mix well using a spatula, then bake for 8 mins until golden. Leave to cool completely on the tray. Will keep in an airtight container for a week. Step 3 Take the ice cream out of the freezer 15 mins before serving. Use the baking parchment to lift it out of the tin, then invert onto a serving plate and peel away the parchment. Sprinkle over the coconut, then cut into thick slices to serve. Food & Drink It might also be worth considering chilling your wine glasses, too. They can heat up very quickly in the hot sun and that alone means it will have an impact on what you are about to consume. BEVERLEY’S 2021 Masterchef winner Eddie Scott (pictured above) is cooking his signature biryani dish at three “feasts” he is hosting in July at Little Wold Vineyard at South Cave. The dates are July 24, 25 & 26 but tickets (£130) are fast selling out. You will be welcomed on arrival with a drink and canapés. Eddie will then present an insight into the history of the Mughlai cuisines of India. A three-course dinner will be served, accompanied by a flight of three wines, all crafted by the award-winning Little Wold Vineyard. The main event will be Eddie’s signature Hyderabadi lamb biryani, which you will be able to see being assembled and cooked in the large traditional deg (pot). The evening will end with a cup of masala chai or coffee and petit fours. More details and details of other wine-related events at the vineyard from www.littlewoldvineyard.co.uk Roy wines, so leaving a bottle of wine in it all day is a bad idea. Basically, it dumbs down the flavour. Depending on the style of wine, and the size of the bottle, an hour in the fridge should be about right. Light, crisp, dry whites can take a bit more chilling than more full-bodied ones such as Chardonnay – for a standard- size bottle, one and a half to two hours in the fridge, rather than an hour. Allow longer times in the fridge for sweet and sparkling wines and some fortified wines such as dry sherry (finos and manzanillas) and Vermouth. Even then, though, there’s a difference between lighter sparkling wines such as Prosecco and lighter aperitif styles of champagne (two to three hours in the fridge) and vintage champagne (an hour and a half to two), which again benefits from a slightly higher temperature to open up. So far as reds are concerned, you probably know (though many restaurants seemingly still don’t) that you can serve light reds such as Pinot Noir and Beaujolais lightly chilled – say, half to three-quarters of an hour – but even fuller-bodied reds benefit from not being served at ambient temperature, particularly on a hot day. I wouldn’t actually chill them, but keep them cool and out of the sun. pale with restrained aromas and flavours; crunchy red berry and citrus fruit notes. The wines are intended to be drunk cold – around 7-13C is best.” She continued: “When enjoying a glass at lunch or in the late afternoon, in the full glare of the sun, my advice is to add 1-2 ice cubes to keep your glass of rosé cold at the optimum temperature. Another tip is to pour smaller glasses – that way the ice and wine won’t sit there for too long.” The research comes as Aldi is fast becoming a destination for rosé wine: Last year, the supermarket saw a 134 per cent uplift in spring/ summer sales year on year. This year, it celebrated the start of pink season by launching the world’s first rosé dispensing billboard. The construction gave free rosé to passers-by when the temperature reached 19.2C in Manchester. Now then, I have to say I’m with the 45 per cent in that survey - adding ice cubes to wine seems like a very bad idea to me - better by far to ensure the wine, whatever the colour, is served at the correct temperature. And that includes red wine. The fridge is where the good - or bad - work is done to ensure we’re enjoying our wine on the hottest of summer days; the point I’m trying to make is simply storing that bottle of white or rose in the fridge for long periods is not great. The average domestic fridge is between 3C and 5C, which is colder than the recommended temperature for even sparkling BRITS have declared their love for rosé, with two thirds describing it as the nation’s “perfect summer drink”, according to new research – yet fans are split over whether or not to add ice to their glass. Supermarket Aldi polled over 1,000 rosé drinkers – and while 55 per cent think it’s acceptable to add a couple of ice cubes when the temperature starts creeping up, 45 per cent claim they would “never” dilute their drink. According to the survey, rosé lovers enjoy an average of 63 glasses throughout summer, spending £11.34 per bottle, with the ultimate moment being a glass of Provence first sipped at 5.18pm. And one in three claim to have tried the “spicy rosé” TikTok trend in which sliced jalapeños are added to a glass of pink. Sam Caporn, Aldi’s wine expert, said: “I regularly get asked if it’s okay to add ice to wine and my answer is usually no – except for when it comes to rosé in the summer. “While it’s true that adding ice to wine can dilute the flavour, when it comes to enjoying a glass of rosé in warm weather, it can be worth sacrificing a tiny bit of flavour for extra refreshment. “During the summer months, it is all about rosés with crisp, cooling acidity. Make the most out of this face makeup essential.. There are certain makeup brushes almost everyone owns, like a flat foundation brush and an eyeshadow shader, while there are others that you might not even understand what they do. Take the kabuki brush, for instance. Many people have simply never heard of this face makeup essential and others have but don’t quite understand how to use it. If you want to make applying makeup easier and take your beauty look to the next level the kabuki brush is one beauty tool to know about. So we’re sharing the lowdown on this must-have tool so that you can pull it out of your makeup bag and put it to use with confidence. What Is A Kabuki Brush? Named after the Japanese drama theaters where they were used to help create elaborate makeup, the traditional kabuki brush has a short handle and dense bristles with a rounded shape. The brushes are primarily used to apply powder products seamlessly as the bristles help dust on just enough product without making your face look cakey or overdone. While face powders, namely loose powders, are the name of the game when it comes to the kabuki brush, you can also use them to apply liquid foundation, just don’t switch back and forth during the same makeup session. Rebekah’s tip: The kabuki brush has evolved in form over time. While a traditional kabuki brush is perfectly rounded, new versions are available in different shapes, including angled, dome, and flat, which you can choose depending on your beauty needs. How To Use A Kabuki Brush Now that you’re better equipped to identify a kabuki brush, it’s time to learn how to put this beauty staple to work. Below, we’re giving you the rundown on how to use four different types of kabuki brushes in your makeup routine. 1. Round Kabuki Brush If you want your beauty look to last from day to night, you’ll need to lock your makeup in with a setting powder. This is where your classic round kabuki brush comes into play. When you’re ready to set your makeup, simply dip the brush into the powder, and dust all over your skin with light strokes. 2. Angled Kabuki Brush If skinimalism-inspired makeup just won’t cut it for every occasion and you still love a good contour here and there, then it would be wise to add an angled kabuki brush to your arsenal. Perfect for any powder contour products, this tool makes precise application easy so you can sculpt your face to your heart’s desire. Sweep your powders onto the skin in key spots, including your cheekbones, the sides of your nose, and your temples and buff them in. 3. Dome Kabuki Brush A domed kabuki brush can be thought of as a smaller take on your traditional kabuki. Since it still has a rounded head shape, this brush is ideal for applying highlighter, blush, and bronzer. Just like the other kabuki brushes, all you need to do is dip your tool into your compact and brush on your powder. Use soft sweeping motions with this shape brush. You can also use a domed kabuki to apply setting powder in hard to reach spots, like the under-eye area and sides of the nose. 4. Flat Top Kabuki Brush Known to pair well with everything from liquid foundations to face powders, the flat top kabuki brush is a multifunctional tool that takes makeup application to the next level. Use the brush to stipple and buff liquid foundation onto your skin for seamless coverage. If you’re using a powder simply dip your brush into the product and press onto your skin. Sweep away excess for a flawless finish. It’s just that easy! How To Care For Your Kabuki Brush Kabuki brushes might work miracles for your makeup, but they don’t have magical self-cleaning powers - you still need to wash them regularly like you do your other brushes. Dirty makeup brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria. So, to protect your skin and keep your makeup brushes bacteria-free, I would recommend washing your brushes at least every seven days. Motoring You simply can’t beat a classic car, can you? Today’s models might be jam-packed with some of the most exciting new tech around, but the charm of a classic motor will really set you apart. From retro design influences to vintage engines and interiors, a retro car simply oozes class. But which is the nation’s favourite? Is it the Aston Martin DB5, James Bond’s wheels of choice? Is it the Lamborghini Countach, which famously featured in The Wolf of Wall Street? The vehicle finance experts at Anglo Scottish Finance have used Google’s Keyword Planner to discover how many Brits are searching for classic car models, to find out which is the nation’s favourite classic car. And these are the results: Car Model Searches p/mth Porsche 911 60,500 BMW E30 27,100 Jaguar E-Type 22,200 Ford Escort 22,200 Lamborghini Countach 22,200 Reliant Robin 18,100 Aston Martin DB5 14,800 Volkswagen Beetle 14,800 Porsche 911 One of the greatest cars ever made, Porsche’s 911 is a feat of German engineering and design mastery. Despite constantly improving and enhancing the car’s performance, not much has changed from a design standpoint since the car was introduced to the market almost 60 years ago in 1964. The one millionth 911 was manufactured in 2017, and was voted fifth in a 1999 poll of the Car of the Century. A whopping 60,500 people in the UK search for “Porsche 911” every month, making it far and away the nation’s favourite classic car. However, the fact that the 911 is still in production – whilst a testament to the car’s brilliance – makes it hard to understand whether the vintage or modern models are driving such a high level of interest. BMW E30 The second-gen model of BMW’s 3 Series line, the E30 was manufactured between 1982 and 1994, and has become a ubiquitous symbol of car design elitism in the late 80s and early 90s. The E30 is generally seen as an improvement on its well-received predecessor, the E21. American rapper Tyler the Creator and singer Frank Ocean have helped bring the E30 back into the public eye in recent years, owning custom cream and orange models respectively. In the UK, there are 27,100 monthly searches for “BMW E30” – and another 5,400 monthly searches for “BMW E30 for sale,” so you could be in for a tough time if you’re looking to buy. Jaguar E-Type What comes to mind when you think of a classic car? The Jaguar E-Type has to be a contender. Manufactured between 1961 and 1974, the E-Type was based on the Jaguar D-Type, which triumphed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for three years in a row. Ranked number one in the Telegraph’s list of the 100 most beautiful cars of all time, and featuring in Austin Powers and Mad Men, the E-Type’s style is ubiquitous. And, with a whopping 22,200 people in the UK searching for one every month, it’s safe to say it’s our nation’s favourite classic car. Ford Escort Right up alongside the E-Type is the Ford Escort, the predecessor to the Ford Focus. Frequently named Britain’s best-selling car throughout the 80s and 90s, the Ford Escort has aged beautifully. Marketed as a family car, the Escort also boasted real motorsport pedigree – the rear-wheel drive Escort RS1800 was one of the most successful rally cars ever. According to data from Google’s Keyword Planner, 22,200 people are searching for “Ford Escort” every month – an 83% increase compared to last year! If you’ve got a vintage Ford Escort gathering dust in your garage, now could be the time to sell up! Lamborghini Countach One of the most iconic cars of all time, the Lamborghini Countach was the successor to the iconic Miura, and helped establish the Italian car manufacturer as King of the Avant-Garde. The Countach Owning a classic car. We’re all dreaming of owning a classic car - or so it seems. Roy Woodcock (who would love to own an E-Type Jaguar) reports . . . 31 To Advertise Please Telephone 01964 552 470 Motoring popularised sharp angles in supercar design, and became known as the pioneer of the “Italian Wedge” shape. 22,200 people are searching for “Lamborghini Countach” every month in the UK! You might recognise the Countach from Martin Scorcese’s 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, where Leo DiCaprio crashed one after a drug-fuelled bender. Car lovers, look away now: to be as realistic as possible, Scorcese insisted on crashing a real Countach – worth about $563,000! Reliant Robin It’s a little… ahem… different to most of the other cars on this list, but the quaint charm of a Reliant Robin means that it’s one of our nation’s favourite vintage cars! Perhaps it’s the nostalgia of Only Fools and Horses or the lasting impact of Top Gear sending one into space in 2007. Maybe it’s simply the novelty factor that three-wheeled cars ever existed. Either way, a massive 18,100 people are searching for “Reliant Robin” every month in the UK, so there’s clearly still significant interest in these cars! Aston Martin DB5 Best-known for its role in the James Bond franchise, it’s no surprise that the Aston Martin DB5 is so popular amongst UK motorists. First driven in 1964’s Goldfinger, the car was originally produced from 1963- 1965. 14,800 people in the UK are searching for “Aston Martin DB5” every month! As part of the Continuation programme, Aston Martin released 25 real life Bond-themed DB5s, complete with functional spy gadgets. Each one would sell for £2.75m – a bit on the pricey side! Volkswagen Beetle Unlike many of the other cars on this list, the VW Beetle remains famous for its look and design, rather than what’s under the bonnet. First manufactured as early as 1938, the Beetle remained in production until 2003, having featured as Herbie in the Disney series of movies. 14,800 people are searching for “Volkswagen Beetle” every month in the UK, making it the eighth- most popular vintage car in this list! * Whether your car is modern or a classic, Anglo Scottish can advise on all matters to do with vehicle finance: www.angloscottishfinance. co.uk/vehicle-finance SMART REPAIRS We now have the latest in Diamond Cut Wheel restoration technology Before After Unit 11 Station Road, Cottingham HU16 4LL Tel 01482 840465 email: john.allen@jjsmartrepair.karoo.co.uk Our SMART repair “You’d never have known it had happened!” Bumper Scuffs :: Standard and Diamond Cut Wheel Repairs :: Nano Ceramic 3 Stage Paint Protection Headlight Polishing Before After PEST CONTROL SERVICE H A V I N G P E S T C O N T R O L I N P L A C E A T Y O U R B U S I N E S S W I L L . . . . 01482 223130 www.eastridingpestmanagement.co.uk CALL OUR FRIENDLY TEAM TODAY ON: Prevent contamination Safeguard your investment Meet your legal requirements Protect your reputation 'The penalties for failure to comply can be severe' S U P E R S T O R E INDEPENDENCE SECURITY AFFORDABILITY Visit Right Care Mobility today! *If you can find the identical item at a competitor store within 14 days of placing your order, we will refund the difference in price plus offer an extra 10% off. Gardening - with Sarah King I am writing this in mid-June in glorious sunshine in time for the next issue of this magazine. However up until now the weather has been variable. We have been cold while they have been frying down south. It’s been windy, pushing transpiration rates up, not good for young plants trying to get established. We’ve had no rain, so watering is becoming a burden for us gardeners. We might be looking towards investing in more drought - resistant plants such as Sea Holly (Eryngium species), Penstemons, Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis), English Lavender, all good pollinators. A radio programme this week was encouraging us to water young trees planted in streets and on verges. They will need in excess of 50 litres of water per week to grow, so if there is one near you please think about helping out. I am sure it will reward you and begin to flourish and enhance the street scene. I have sorted my bulbs out to dry in preparation for re- planting in the autumn in some spot where it doesn’t matter if they flower again. While sorting I couldn’t resist admiring the seed pods of the Tulipa tarda and I am tempted to make some earrings the same shape in my silver work classes. Cutting the pod in half revealed a beautiful shape which could be a design for some stud earrings. I often use shapes from plants for inspiration. I always want to learn something new about plants and one Spring Watch programme brought my attention to Forget-me-nots. I had no idea that when the nectar and pollen is finished the yellow ring, where the petals join in the centre to make a tube, turns white, indicating to the insects that they must look elsewhere. It is extraordinary how the natural world is able to communicate! The ‘freebie’ plants in my garden are helping to soften some of the hard edges. Erigeron karviaskianus is so dainty and happy to grow anywhere, even on walls. Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) is in full flower and once it turns brown you can cut it back and be rewarded with a second flourish. Trailing Bellflower (Campanula sp) likes the walls but so does the very pretty Ivy leaved Toadflax (Cymbalaria muralis)!! It made its way to UK in the C17th apparently, in the packaging of something imported from Italy to Oxford. It took root but climbed over the college wall and escaped! You will see it everywhere, beside pavements, on walls, gutters, etc; charming it may be but it is a hooligan if you let it go in the garden, winding itself around everything. John Ruskin, the C19 art critic, writer, artist, loved it and in 1852 painted it in watercolour calling it ‘Oxford Ivy.’ Jobs in the garden Everything will be in bloom now, too much to name with Roses, Astrantia, Phlox, Delphiniums, Lupins, Geraniums and hanging baskets flourishing. Deadheading is crucial and with Petunias you must remove the developing seed head as well as the colourful trumpet. Hardy geraniums can be cut back and they will flower again. With Catmint (Nepeta) and Lady’s Mantle you can ‘shear without fear’! and be rewarded with new growth. Wisteria will need light summer pruning cutting off the thin, whippy, branches. Hebes and Lavender can be trimmed lightly after flowering as can rambler roses. Keep Camellias well-watered to ensure good flower bud formation - they herald the new spring in such a colourful display after a long winter. Bearded Irises can be divided every 3-4 years by lifting the rhizomes, splitting the clumps, trimming the leaves down to about 6 inches and replanted in a well-drained sunny spot with some mulch and fertiliser. On the Plot There will be much for us to harvest over the summer, I hope. Because it has been so dry, and now hot and windy, I have resisted sowing seeds as I know new seedlings will need constant attention - so I may be growing less but have purchased good sturdy seedlings of carrots, beans, courgettes, peas, kale, sweet corn, beetroot, leeks, which are well established and enduring the weather so far with regular watering. Strawberries are sending off runners in all directions now and if you want more plants pot up the runners and plant out later, otherwise cut off and dispose of them. Vacant spots can be sown with green manure such as clover and Phacelia. Both attract the bees. I am a little behind with my potatoes and I’m sure many of you have already enjoyed yours. There is nothing better than freshly dug potatoes with plenty of butter and parsley. I am trying to grow sweet peas up my sweet corn and maybe I will plant out some lettuce seedlings between them also. That depends very much on the weather! My artichokes are coming on well and even if they don’t produce many chokes the plants themselves are spectacularly architectural. My sage plant is magnificent: can’t possibly use it all but the bees are loving it! The elderberry tree is flowering and smelling lovely. I use the flowers for decoration on desserts and this year I am going to make some elderflower vinegar. I was delighted to see so much blossom on my apple trees this year and the bees have done their bit so there are now so many apples developing I am going to have to pick off a few to let the remaining ones breathe! Sadly, only one of my dahlias has survived. My fault, I didn’t put enough protection on them over winter! Lesson learned! Out and about and on the Road Hawthorn has been wonderful but the flowers are short lived unlike the Blackthorn earlier in the year. The leaves are now providing sustenance for many moth caterpillars, e.g. Small Eggar. Wild roses have replaced it and Dog Rose (Rosa canina) and Field Rose (Rosa arvensis) have taken over. At the cathedral in Hildesheim, Germany, there is a Dog Rose that is reputed to be the oldest rose in the world, 1000 years old, and it even survived the bombing in WW2! Cow parsley and related Umbellifers adorn the verges everywhere. They are a spectacle at Simon’s Wood, (DN 15 9GU) at Winterton which is owned by the Woodland Trust. A lovely wander round on easy paths will take you through the small wood and hedgerows of native species and grassland with cow parsley, dog roses, Yellow Rattle etc. Nearer to home, Burnby Hall Gardens, at Pocklington are a must in July and August to enjoy the blooms of 80 +varieties of hardy Water lilies. Don’t’ forget 147th Driffield Show on July 19th where you may be tempted to buy some more plants to keep your garden flowering well into the autumn. Lavender will be in flower now at Yorkshire Lavender at Terrington, YO60 6PB and Wolds Way Lavender at WInteringham, Malton, YO17 8HW so don’t miss them. On my ‘to do list’ is the National Trust property, Woolbeding Charity Glass House in W. Sussex. It is a large ten-sided glasshouse, a Terrarium, housing flora from subtropical S.W. China. It takes 4 minutes for it to unfold, like a flower, to show off its treasures. My house plants (most of them) are going out in the garden for a holiday and after I have fed, watered and mulched everything I will sit with my feet up, admire the garden and lose myself in the bulb catalogues and start planning for next spring! Enjoy your July garden - Sarah x ALL ABOUT PLANTS, GARDENS and VEGETABLE PATCHES Tulip tarda. Rosa canina. Bearded Iris. Cow Parsley Erigeron karviaskianus. July/August 2023 Get Your Business

The Last Word FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife and Mum to two teenagers! SUMMER SUN Yay! The summer is finally here. Longer days and warmer weather always make me so much more motivated. I’m looking forward to dog walks on the beach, barbeques and pizza oven nights in the garden and having some time off! Weather forecasts keep saying we’re going to have a hot, hot summer (and we’ve already seen some top temperatures) so make sure you stay safe in the sun. Remember your sun cream (factor 50+ for me!) and keep hydrated. And if you’re going off in the car anywhere, don’t leave your dogs’ inside or if you do, leave the windows open!! PLANNING FOR AUTUMN I know it’s summer but, when you work for yourself, you’re always planning a few months ahead, so that’s what I’m currently doing. I’m working out what my goals are for September and beyond, so that I can get organised now and get things set up so that I’m ready to go! For starters, I’ll be running my next 8-week Live group PR Bootcamp, teaching solopreneurs and small business how to get in the media for free, how to find a story, write press releases that work and identify the right journalists to send them to, so I need to let them know what it’s all about, so they can book on my programme. I’ll need to start my marketing 4-6 weeks in advance of the start date. What are you hoping to do in the Autumn and when do you need to start your planning? COCKTAILS, MOCKTAILS I’ve always wanted to mix my own cocktails but I’ve never actually done it, so I’ve recently bought a cocktail making set to finally give it a go! I thought it would be an interesting summer activity! I’m not a big drinker but I like an occasional gin and tonic so I thought I’d start with a Classic Gin Fizz Cocktail. There are so many recipes online. I found this one on tamingtwins.com. Fill a cocktail shaker (or mason jar/ large jam jar) with ice. Add 90ml gin, 60ml lemon juice, 20ml sugar syrup or 2 tsp icing sugar and shake hard until the outside of the shaker or jar is cold. Strain into tall glasses filled with ice and top up with soda water. Garnish with lemon or lime. There are also some amazing recipes out there for non-alcoholic mocktails which I’m definitely going to check out too. They’ll be perfect for enjoying the summer sun! Have a great summer everyone!
