Local News Customers in the East Riding of Yorkshire are among Great Britain’s top energy switchers, with one in four of them changing their supplier in 2020, new figures have revealed. The figures, published by Energy UK’s Energy Switch Guarantee, show that the East Riding of Yorkshire is second in a table of the top areas in Great Britain for the most energy switching activity last year. The local authority rankings are ordered by the percentage of properties that switched electricity supplier between January and December 2020. Last year, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s YORSwitch scheme switched 5,234 households, saving East Riding residents more than £1 million. Since the scheme began in 2013, YORSwitch has helped more than 36,000 households switch their energy tariffs, with savings of over £7.6 million. East Riding residents can still register for the latest YORSwitch auction, with Shell Energy the winning provider in this round. Residents can register and switch up until Tuesday, 6 July. Councillor Chris Matthews, portfolio holder for environment and climate change at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Residents still have time to register for the latest YORSwitch round. Now is the best time to fix your energy tariff. Switching through YORSwitch, to the winning supplier which is Shell Energy, is expected to save residents money in the long term. The tariff is fixed until the end of August 2022.” To register for the latest YORSwitch auction, visit www.eastriding.gov. uk/yorswitchor, alternatively, call 01482 393939. Bus company East Yorkshire is slashing evening bus fares for the summer to help people make the most of the region’s restaurants and pubs following lockdown. During July and August, anyone can travel for just £1 after 7pm on any of the company’s buses, giving huge savings for evening travellers. The fare cut, which comes in from 2 July, aims to give East Yorkshire buses passengers the chance to enjoy the long summer evenings after a long year of lockdown, while also supporting the region’s restaurants and hospitality venues. There are no restrictions on the offer, with every bus service across East Yorkshire offering passengers the chance to travel for just £1 on any journey after 7pm. People can take advantage of the offer as many times as they like over the two months. Ben Gilligan, Area Director of East Yorkshire, said that after a difficult year, the bus company wanted to give customers the chance to get out and enjoy the long summer evenings. “We know that a lot of people have been stuck at home for most of the pandemic, and now that restrictions are lifting they’re looking forward to meeting up with friends and family and revisiting some of the places they love,” he said. “Putting our evening fares down to just £1 for the summer is our way of saying thank you for the great support our customers have given us over the last year, and allows us to give a boost to the region’s hospitality industry by making it cheaper for people to go out in the evening.” To benefit from the evening offer, simply hop aboard any East Yorkshire bus after 7pm, and your journey will only cost £1. Evening tickets are also available to purchase in advance on the East Yorkshire Buses app. You can find out more information on the offer and plan your next journey by visiting www.eastyorkshirebuses.co.uk Bus tickets cut to just £1 across Hull and East Yorkshire

Vegan News Many make-up products contain cruelty and not the answer to all your beauty woes. If you’re a vegan veteran, it’s likely not news to you that not all make-up is vegan. But, those of you who are newer to the plant-based way of life might be shocked to hear that not only do most everyday beauty items contain animal derivatives, but many are also not cruelty-free -with animal testing mandatory in some countries outside of the UK and the EU. Cosmetics testing is, thankfully, illegal in the UK and the EU, yet, to be able to sell into the markets of some other countries, brands will often still have to test their products on animals elsewhere, and, included ingredients may have been individually animal tested before inclusion. When it comes to animal exploitation, the more awareness, the better equipped we can be to fight to end it. So, whether you’re a long-term vegan in need of a plant-based make-up refresher course, or if you are still a newbie -we’re here to help. We will arm you with the knowledge of what happens behind the scenes, so that you might share it with others. And, we will enable you to recognise what is cruelty-free and vegan, and what is not, so that you can shop make-up with confidence. Vegan and cruelty-free One of the main things that catches people out when it comes to make-up, is the difference between the terms ‘vegan’ and ‘cruelty-free’. Many products will state that they are cruelty-free but will still contain animal ingredients. Likewise, many items will state on the label that they are vegan and will feature no animal-based derivatives, yet, have involved some type of animal testing in their production line, whether conducted by the brand or by a third-party. As vegans, we aim to be of no harm to animals - in any shape or form. So, for a product to be truly ‘vegan’, it should not contain any animal derivatives; none of the individual ingredients should have been individually tested on animals, and the final product should not have been animal tested, either. So, when buying make-up always look for the cruelty-free ‘leaping bunny’ logo or similar awards, and for vegan certification. It also helps to know what ingredients to look out for, so here is a breakdown of the most common animal derivatives to check the label for before you buy. Common animal ingredients to avoid Acetyl Glucosamine/N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) Traditionally, NAG comes from the outer shells of marine animals, and it is used in a multitude of foundations and skincare products to make skin appear fuller. Luckily, NAG can also be sourced from mushrooms or through microbial processing of corn and wheat, however, it won’t often be labelled as such, so it’s wise to avoid it unless on vegan-certified products. Beeswax and honey Produced by honey bees, bees wax and honey are used as colourings and emollients in lipsticks and balms, mascaras, eye creams and shadows, nail whiteners and face make-up. Vegetable colours and oils can easily be used instead, as can a type of wax made from the mineral ozokerite, also known as ‘Earth wax’. Also look out for other bee products, like royal jelly and cera flava. Carmine/cochineal dye Carmine, also listed as cochineal dye, is essentially dye collected from crushed cochineal beetles. The bugs eat cactus plants in South America, and females particularly enjoy eating the red cactus berries. When the beetles are crushed an intense red dye is produced, which is horrifically used to colour lipsticks and blushers. It takes 70,000 boiled, crushed beetles to produce just 1pound of the colouring. However, there are numerous plant-derived alternatives, including the use of beets and grapes. Casein/sodium caseinate Casein or sodium caseinate, as it’s also called, is a protein found in cow’s milk. The harvesting of it contributes to the continuation of the exploitative dairy industry. Yet, there are vegan alternatives to casein that can be derived from plant milks, with these usually being labelled as a vegetable protein. Guanine/pearl essence This is a sparkly substance made by scraping the scales off dead fish. It is usually used in glittery nail varnishes, eye shadows, mascaras, highlighters, blushers and bronzers. Vegan replacements include synthetic pearl, mica, rayon, leguminous plants, bronze particles and crystal infusions. Glycerine The non-vegan variant of glycerine comes from animal fats and is used in most cosmetics. There is, however, a vegetable-based variant of glycerine, usually made from soya or coconut oil - so make sure to double check with the manufacturer which one is used in a product before you buy. Lanolin This is an emollient derived from sheep wool, often used in lip balms and sticks. Alternatives include plant oils, like coconut or olive, as well as butters like cocoa and shea. Mink fur Fur taken from intensively farmed minks is repeatedly used to create make-up brushes and fake eyelashes. Brands claim that using mink hair gives brushes a softer feel and lashes a more natural look. Numerous vegan-friendly synthetic and natural fibres can be used to make beautiful- looking false lashes and delicate brushes. Oleic acid/oleyl stearate, oleyl oleate or tallow The non-vegan version of this ingredient is obtained from animal fats and oils, often from cows, and is frequently used in nail varnishes, lipsticks and skin preparations like moisturisers and primers. Happily, there are lots of vegan friendly versions, made using coconut or shea oil. Shellac Shellac is a resin-like ingredient that is acquired from the secretions of female lac bugs, and features in nail products like varnishes and hardeners. Like carmine, hundreds of thousands of these tiny insects are killed to obtain even the tiniest amount of shellac. A kinder alternative is Zein - a corn-based product made by FloZein Products. Silk powder Silk worms are left to mature to pupation within their cocoons, and then the worms are dissolved alive in boiling water to create silk fibres from which to make silk powder. You will often find it in mineral make-up and sometimes, skincare products - it provides colour, oil absorbency and lubricity. Yet, there are loads of different ingredients that can be used in its place, like natural powder made from arrowroot. Of course, there are lots more animal derived products that can be added to this list, but there are so many it would be near impossible to list them all here. Look out for as many of the above as you can, and check for vegan certifications. Animal testing What happens? As well as incorporating animal- derived ingredients, many make-up products undergo a vast number of different types of animal tests, conducted to pass safety regulations. Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice and dogs are all used in these cruel experiments, which include ‘lethal dose’ tests (to check for the amount ingested required to cause death), eye and skin irritation assessments and allergy checks. Half a million animals are used to test beauty products around the world each year - that means that today alone, more than 1,369 animals will have been tested on (crueltyfreeinternational.org), before being killed or dying. During tests, pregnant rabbits are force fed a cosmetics’ ingredient for 28 days straight, before being killed for dissection, along with their unborn babies. In other experiments, rabbits, mice, rats and guinea pigs have their fur shaved, and their bare flesh pasted with a make-up ingredient. They are then subjectively observed to check for allergic reactions, prior to being killed. House & Home Starting Too Soon In an ideal world, you want to live in your home first before making any major decisions. “Before we moved into our house, I had plans about how to reconfigure it. But after living there for three years, how we planned the space changed dramatically,” says interior designer Laura Mixer. “If you have the opportunity to live in, then do… and move out for the work if you can. It was cost prohibitive for us to rent, but it delayed the whole process – the builders had to make us a temporary kitchen, work around us and the dust and noise was 24/7.” Opting For Cheap Labour When you put your project out for tender, it’s important to get a range of quotes. Just be wary of automatically going for the cheapest option as opting for the lowest bid could prove a false economy. “Spend your money on electrics, rewiring, doors, windows and floors – all the elements that make your property safe. Invest in the bones of the building first and foremost,” adds David Moore from Moores Builders. Underestimating The Budget Most jobs will cost more and take longer than you expect – so the professionals recommend always adding 20% to what you think a project will cost initially, when it comes to setting the budget. Nichola from Moores Builders explains: “Renovation often costs more than you think so get lots of Exciting as it is to get cracking on a home renovation project, if you’ve done one, you’ll know it’s rarely plain sailing. To discover which are the common mistakes the industry pros see time and again – and how to avoid making them yourself – we asked building company director Nichola Moore and interior designer Laura Mixer to share their insights.. Picking The Wrong Property Make sure you start by picking the right property, which includes thoroughly researching your prospective area. If you’re going to live there, make sure it’s right for you and if you plan to rent, look into which properties are in demand, and what kind of rate you can afford. Don’t forget to look into local regulations/restrictions and planning permissions, too, by getting in touch with the local council. When you’ve found a potential renovation project, make sure you get a full survey done. You don’t want to discover hidden problems once it’s too late. House & Home Continued page 12 quotes and do your research before you commit or sign any paperwork.” Choosing The Wrong Person When it comes to putting together a renovations team, it’s important to find someone who is genuinely aligned to your vision – as well as capable of delivering on budget and on time. “Have a great team of builders – most of the time they’ll pass on cost savings in other ways, and could potentially save you money in the long term,” says David. Not Asking For References Ask to see or speak to at least three previous projects and clients, advise the pros. Most good builders, project managers and interior designers will have a portfolio of work you can browse and testimonials available from those who have used them in the past. If you want to hear directly from previous client, ask to speak to them on the phone to find out first-hand about their experience. Pretending To Understand The Blueprints If you don’t understand something on an architect’s drawing, ask. Don’t be embarrassed or feel you should know – it’s their area of expertise, not yours. Likewise, if you find it hard to imagine the space, use tape to outline it so you can see what you’re doing. “When I design a kitchen, I use tape on the floor to really visualise the space,” says David. “Recently I was mapping out an island in a kitchen and it really helped me position it.” Not Sticking To Your Schedule Work closely with your builder – and interior designer if you’re using one – to ensure you know when they need decisions from you. At no point do you want to be the one holding things up. “It’s best if everyone involved in the project shares a schedule. The more open and transparent everyone is, the more expectations can be managed,” Denise explains. Think backwards from the end date and get your order dates and deposits in early, too. “If your builder is waiting for glazing then you’re paying for his downtime,” says Laura. “Get as much on site as early as possible – you won’t always get much warning about what you need when!” Being Indecisive Once the plans are set, you need to commit. Changing where the shower goes or moving the light switch might seem small fry to you, but too many decisions made late in the day will add up and negatively affect your budget. “Your electrician will want to know almost immediately where everything should go,” explains Laura. “If you can get the lights ordered and on site, you can show the them where and how high you want them. It sounds extreme, but this will save you time later on.” Ignoring The Boring Bits For some of us, the fabrics and furnishings are the most important element of any renovation, but ignoring the more boring parts of your renovation isn’t smart. Think gutters, roofing, glazing – the structure of your building may seem dull, but this is the glue that will hold the whole thing together. “If you have to redo for roof for thousands of pounds then you must, even if that means sacrificing your interior budget,” says David. “By ignoring it, you will end up with a property that’s unliveable.” Splashing Out On The Wrong Things The things you use every day – door handles, light switches, joinery – these are items you could invest in. Because you will interact with these elements of your home on a regular basis, they’re worth splashing out on – but there are tricks to keep the costs down. “Sockets and switches can really add up, so prioritise the ones you see and use the most,” says Laura. “Invest in brassware in bathrooms, too – cheap ones will need to be replaced sooner than you think.” Not Planning Your Purchases Make sure you buy furniture that can actually fit inside your newly designed doors and up the stairs – know your new measurements inside out so you can be sure everything fits into the space. “If you’re buying anything bespoke, make sure it’s functional, too,” July 2021 Get Your Business Noticed

House & Home says Denise. “I recently heard of someone who had designed a lovely island but when it arrived, it had to be cut in two for access, including the marble top. If you’re ordering items such as taps, make sure you order all the mechanisms at the same time, too – you don’t want to be unable to install something vital because you’re missing a crucial part.” Doing The Entire Space In One Go Better to take your project room by room when your budget allows than do a little bit to each room without any of them reaching the standard you want. “The kitchen, bathroom and flooring are all top priorities,” says Laura. “As the project continues, you may feel your time and energy are in short supply and you may end up making a disastrous decision. Depending on your circumstances, take your time, do it well and focus on the details when time and budgets allow.” Going Hard On The Tech Cutting edge tech solutions can become quicky outdated and even make your property feel tired. “So much can go wrong, especially with app-based tech,” warns Laura. “Something like Sonos is a good choice – it’s easy to move around, you can add more, its discreet and can be easily upgraded. Plus, if you do move, you can take it with you.” Expecting Everything To Go Perfectly “Things will go wrong,” says Nichola. “Have back-up plans for everything. Lead times are harder than ever to predict at the moment, with Covid-19 and Brexit supply issues – sometimes it’s taking 20 weeks for pieces to come, and that’s not allowing for human error, which can happen at any stage in the supply chain.” Delays can cause a domino effect, so be prepared for the unexpected. Looking after plants can seem really scary if you’re new to it, or have had a bad experience in the past. But then again, there are few things more satisfying than tending and nurturing a plant and seeing it flourish and grow. And we’re about to make that process far less work for you, thanks to Michelle at Bell Mills Garden Centre in Driffield. ‘Four of the most common questions I am asked are about unkillable plants, ones that will survive without much daylight, what can go in a bathroom, and which plants are best for air purification,’ he reveals. Here’s Michelle’s quick guide to the best house plants to solve those leafy conundrums. Best house plant that’s unkillable ‘We’ve all been there,’ says Michelle. ‘You’ve picked up a beautiful plant from the market, brimming with luscious leaves. But a week later, after over/underwatering or sticking it by a radiator… it dies. You overlooked by the urban gardener, but it’s actually the perfect spot for a bit of greenery. Humidity-loving plants like Ferns feel right in at home in the steamy environment and they don’t mind a bit of shade either as it reminds them of their natural jungle habitat. And with space at a premium, find a high shelf for your plants to perch or, better still, let them trail and, voilà, your very own jungle oasis! Our top pick would be the Boston fern (pictured below). vow never to buy another, but your lust for botany makes you crave something else that comes without the maintenance.’ ‘Well, look no further than a hardy Sanservieria (pictured top right) snake plant, a houseplant that genuinely appreciates a missed watering or two. She truly is the ultimate beginner’s choice, tolerating shadier spots and perfect for the bedroom too. Best house plant for low light ‘All plants eventually need some natural light to survive, but unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with sun-soaked spaces,’ says Michelle. ‘This doesn’t always mean that you can’t bring some plants into your space, though.’ ‘If you’re desperate to green up a shady spot there are a few options for you,’ advises Michelle. ‘One of our favourite choices is our Zamioculas (pictured above). She’s also known as the Eternity Plant thanks to her ability to survive in tough conditions, meaning she’ll happily put up with very little sunshine.’ Best house plant for clean air Plants not only look great; some can even purify the air we breathe. Toxins produced by cleaning products and furnishings in our homes are a major cause of indoor air pollution; not ideal when city dwellers spend most of our time indoors. Introducing a flowing delicacy like the a Devil’s Ivy, commonly known as a Golden Pothos (pictured bottom left), can transform the air quality of your home as well as green up your space with her trailing tresses. Health, Beauty & Fashion Rebekah’s Beauty Box Common Make-Up Questions - Answered! From how to get dewy skin, to the easiest way to do a smokey eye and the best brushes to invest in, here I share my professional advice as I answer the questions you asked. Question #1: If You Want A Dewy Finish From Your Foundation, How Should You Apply It? Rebekah’s Answer: “To get a dewy finish the most important step is actually skin prep, a step people often forget or ignore entirely. I like to use Dr Barbara Sturm’s Enzyme Cleanser twice a week – nothing gets read of dead skin cells better – to leave skin feeling smooth, refined and ready for make-up. After this, I’ll choose a nice, nourishing moisturiser. I love Weleda’s Skin Food for those on the dry side – it has the best texture and gives skin an amazing glow, you just have to make sure you really work it in. In terms of which foundation you apply and how, it depends on the kind of base make-up you’re applying. If it’s a thin, transparent texture, apply it with your hands, but if it’s creamier, use a brush or a sponge and keep buffing until it’s fully absorbed. Begin by focusing on the centre of your face where you often need more coverage, then begin to blend it outwards. If you want to add more glow, apply a highlighter to the highest points of your face – cheekbones, bridge of your nose, forehead and cupid’s bow.” Question #2: What’s The Best Way To Choose A Red Lipstick? Rebekah’s Answer: “First, you need to assess what your skin’s undertone is. Cooler skin tones – those who often suit silver jewellery best – do well with reds that have more blue undertones, whereas warmer complexions – those who often suit gold jewellery better – do well with warmer, richer colours. In all honesty though, don’t stick to the rules too rigidly. My advice is to feel it out and have a play. Sometimes, there’s nothing chicer than a warm red on very cold skin. The best thing to do is swatch, play and try to see which ones feel right for you. In terms of suits-all products, The Westman Atelier Lip Suede (pictured) in Les Rouges come highly recommended. There are four shades of red, so you can’t go too far wrong – it’s a fun way of playing with colour. You also can’t go wrong with MAC’s Ruby Woo or Lady Danger as they’re both universally flattering.” Question #3: If You Only Have Five Minutes To Do Your Make-Up, What Should You Prioritise? Rebekah’s Answer: “Invest in a sheer foundation, cream blush (which doubles up for lips) and a great mascara. To me, these three things are essential to keep you looking fresh, awake and healthy. My go-tos are Tom Ford’s Traceless Foundation, Glossier’s Cloud Paints and their Lash Slick Mascara, too. The foundation is so creamy and easy to blend when time is of the essence. As for the blushers, I often use these on my lips for a bitten effect and the brand’s mascara, in my opinion, is the best for quickly defining lashes in a natural way – you could apply it without a mirror it’s so easy.” Question #4: Multi-Tasking Products Are Everywhere – What Should You Invest In? Rebekah’s Answer: “Chanel’s Baume Essentiel stick really is one of the best products on the market. I use it everywhere – eyes, cheekbones and even lips, as it blends so well with other products. MAC’s blushers in ‘Taupe,’ ‘Blunt,’ and ‘Film Noir,’ are brilliant too, as they contour and double up as an eyeshadow, too. Use ‘Taupe’ for lighter skin and the other two shades for deeper tones. Finally, NARS’ Multiple Stick will always be in my kit. I rotate the shades ‘Orgasm’ and ‘Na Pali Coast,’ as they’re so flattering and again, can be used all over the face.” Question #5: Is There An Easy Way To Make Your Lashes Look Longer? Rebekah’s Answer: “Yes, absolutely. Nine times out of ten I will curl the lashes before doing any make-up – it’s the best way to add volume and really lift the lashes from the base. My go-to curlers are Shu Uemura’s as they have such great grip. After this, I’ll choose a mascara according to the result I want, which again, is something people often neglect. If you want a mascara that lengthens, look for one that specifies this. I’d also advise investing in lighter formulas – you don’t want anything too thick as it will just weigh lashes down and erase any curl you’ve created. Always start right at the root and glide it through right to the tips, taking your time as you go for even results.” Question #6: If You Want To Apply Lipstick, But Suffer With Dry, Chapped Flakes, What Can You Do? Rebekah’s Answer: “If you’re planning on wearing a bold colour for a night out, always prep your lips beforehand. I’ll often use a lip scrub to get rid of dead skin and make the lips smoother. Both MAC’s Lip Scrub and Kiko’s Scrubbing Wipes are brilliant. After this, I’ll slather on a lip balm, like Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream. Just make sure you apply the balm an hour or so before any colour, so it has time to absorb and hydrate. Finally, remove any excess and blot everything with tissue paper so it’s not too wet or sticky when lipstick is applied.” Continued on Page18 July 2021 Get Your Business Noticed

And Which Are Most Important? Rebekah’s Answer: This is a tricky one as all brushes are important, and I have many myself. It does depend how extensive your routine is, but typically, I’d recommend having a powder brush (left) which is big, fluffy and soft, as well as a blush brush that has an angled edge to help you hug the cheeks. Beyond that, it’s worth having two or three brushes for your eyes. Firstly, a rounded fluffy one that blends your eyeshadow, then a flat brush to apply pigment or glitter, and a small, rounded one with a thin top that allows you to take a more detailed approach. If foundation is a big thing for you, invest in a good brush with soft, but dense bristles, for this, or a sponge, although the former is preferable for creating a smooth canvas.” Question #8: What’s The Easiest Way To Do A Smokey Eye When Time Is Tight? Rebekah’s Answer: “Start off by applying a tiny amount of concealer (I always use Super Creamy Brightening Concealer by Kosas £26) onto your eyelids to ensure a smooth base. My favourite way to create a smokey eye is always with a jumbo eye pencil – I love the Caviar Sticks from Laura Mercier (pictured) you can just blend them out with fingers. Scribble them over your lids but stop right at the crease of your eyes – when you press with your finger you can feel your bone, that’s where your natural crease is – then quickly blend with a rounded, fluffy brush, or your fingers. Finish off with a kohl liner on both your top and bottom waterline and really try to get between the roots of your lashes. Blend everything out with eyeshadow if you want more depth and dimension, and remember, it doesn’t have to be neat and tidy, that’s the beauty of a smokey eye.” Question #9: Should Blusher Be Worn & Applied A Certain Way, Or Does Anything Go? Rebekah’s Answer: “I think everyone should own a cream blush. Why? Because they’re easier to apply than any other texture and they preserve that natural, glowy bounce of your skin. Apply it on the apples of your cheeks with fingers or a sponge and take small, circular motions as you go. If I’ve used a sponge, I’ll use what’s left over the bridge of my nose and brow bone for a soft, sun-kissed flush.” Specialist Music Shows Every Thursday on BeverleyFM 7pm The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hour with David Harper 8pm Pure Blues with Roy Woodcock 9pm Nic Gough’s World of Reggae No Radio! - Just ‘Ask Alexa’ to tune in to BeverleyFM One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain. - Bob Marley Question #10: Finally, Is There A Simple Way To Apply Liquid Liner? Rebekah’s Answer: “People often think they need to get a perfect stroke of eyeliner in one go, but it doesn’t work like that. You should instead try depositing small lines little by little. Trace your winged flick with your eye open – especially if you have hooded eyes – as this will allow you to see where you want it to sit and avoid any droopiness. Get some good, thin cotton buds, too – I stock up constantly from Muji – and dip them in micellar water to correct the line and symmetry. It can take time, but it doesn’t need to be done in one big rush.” 1: Powder Brush La Bouche Rouge £35 2: Superhero 4-in-1 Eye-Transforming Super Shadow & Liner Brush IT Cosmetics £24 3: Angled Contour Brush Morphe £17 4: Pro Brush Angled Eyeliner NYX £9 4 3 2 1 A B C D E

Food & Drink July 2021 Get Your Business Noticed wine van. “Think milk float, but with wine. We’ve created a service which we’ll be offering to local Essex customers, who can use our refillable bottles, and we’ll refill them direct from kegs in the van and deliver them to the customer’s door and collect their empties,” Walker said. “Our aim is to be 100 per cent non- glass packaging over the next five years. We now need our customers to come along with us on this journey and help break down those preconceptions about non-glass packaging for wine. “We’re hopeful that with an increasing number of people more aware about the carbon footprint of a glass bottle of wine, many will be supportive in this step forward. We’re proud to be leading the way in sustainability for wine packaging in the UK,” he added. * English wine writer Amanda Barnes has published one of the most comprehensive guides to South American wine to date, taking in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. Called The South America Wine Guide, the 528- page book is based on a decade of research and interviews conducted by Amanda while living on the continent. The guide features winemaker and winery profiles, wine region travel guides, and a curated list of each region’s best wines via a “Terroir Selection” of 403 wines from over 2,500 tasted. Printed by Kingsbury Press, The South America Wine Guide is priced at £35. It’s also available via Kindle for £21. Until next month stay safe Roy range of wines made in Essex. The “Frugal Bottle” is made in the UK by sustainable packaging firm Frugalpac and is five times lighter than a glass bottle with an 84per cent lower carbon footprint. Inside the paper packaging is a recyclable food grade pouch to keep the wine sealed and secure. The introduction of the paper bottle is part of the Essex-based retailer and producer’s aim to sell all of its wines in non-glass bottles by 2026. According to the retailer, a recent poll of 1,700 UK wine drinkers found that 63 per cent of those surveyed would buy wine housed in a paper bottle. “As winemakers, we have a responsibility to make positive steps towards more environmentally friendly methods in winemaking. Packaging is a good place to start, as apart from in certain areas of winemaking where glass bottling in required, there is no reason not to make this change other than misplaced preconceptions about packaging for wine,” said The English Vine founder, Neil Walker. “Consumers often view the non- glass packaged options of wine as lower quality, perhaps because in the past it’s fair to say there were some more mass-produced, lower quality wines that have used this form of packaging. “However, we want to lead the way to show that your wine will be just as enjoyable and high quality in a more environmentally friendly packaging, such as our new paper bottles,” he added. The English Vine will also be rolling out a “bottomless bottle service” in Essex this summer using its electric These cans will be perfect for those occasions at home or when heading out to the beach or for a picnic. “The wine world can seem stuffy and that’s not our vibe. We’re here to prove that amazing quality wine can be drunk anywhere, by anyone.” Tommy Banks added: “For us, it’s all about putting flavour first. We will only put the best in our cans, sourcing amazing wine from like-minded people.” Canning the wines allows the brothers to release limited- edition batches, working with small-scale growers who share the same passion for quality and responsibility. And the siblings chose to launch with South African wines to help the local wine industry in the country, which has been hit hard by alcohol bans during the pandemic. Husband and wife team, Gordon and Nadia Newton Johnson, are behind their Syrah Mourvèdre No. 1 and Chardonnay No. 3, which are produced on their family run estate in Hemel-en-Aarde. The Syrah Mourvèdre is said to be “a powerful and spicy wine, full of dark fruits and pepper”, while the Chardonnay is “a complex wine with a creamy mouthfeel and a zippy acidic streak” offering notes of “apples, pears and butter”. Meanwhile, specialist online retailer The English Vine has launched what it claims is the first paper bottle for English wine to house its own Wine comes in bottles, right? Well, yes, and discounting the somewhat fading fad of buying wine in a box, I know I’m stating the obvious, but there’s been a couple of interesting developments recently that I thought it worth reporting. First up, Yorkshire chef Tommy Banks (he of the Black Swan at Oldstead and Roots in York - both Michelin starred) is this month launching a range of wines in cans with his brother James. Due to go on sale in July, and available for delivery nationwide, the range comprises a South African Syrah Mourvèdre and Chardonnay housed in 250ml cans, priced at £21 for three, £40 for six or £78 for a dozen. The brothers say they embarked on the project in a bid to make wine more accessible and less intimidating for consumers, and to challenge the preconceived notion that quality wine can only come from a bottle. Said James: “I often feel like one or two decent glasses of wine but don’t want to open a special bottle. Roy Woodcock’s World of Wine Best Buys for July Please drink responsibly. July 2021 Get Your Business Noticed Ingredients: FOR THE BROWNIE 227g of unsalted butter, softened 120ml of canola oil 350g of semisweet chocolate chips 270g of all-purpose flour, spoon and levelled 1 tsp of salt 8 large eggs, room temperature 400g of granulated sugar 190g of packed brown sugar FOR THE CARAMEL SAUCE 200g of granulated sugar 60ml of water 120ml of heavy whipping cream, room temperature 113g of unsalted butter, softened ½ tsp of vanilla extract ½ tsp of salt FOR THE WHIPPED CHOCOLATE GANACHE FROSTING 3 batches of thick dark chocolate ganache 170g of dark chocolate 90ml of heavy whipping cream Method: 1. For the brownie, grease three 8in x 8 in (20cm x 20cm) baking pans with baking spray, then line the pans with parchment paper, leaving an overhang of paper above the tops of the pans to easily remove the brownies. Preheat the oven to 163°C (325°F). 2. In a small bowl, melt the butter, canola oil and the chocolate chips for 20-second intervals in the microwave, stirring after each interval, until the mixture is smooth, 1-2 minutes. Set aside the mixture to cool for a minute. 3. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder and salt until they’re evenly distributed. 4. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated and brown sugars until they’re just barely combined. Don’t overmix. Whisk the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture, then sift the dry ingredients over the wet, mixing just until the last streak of flour is combined. 5. Distribute the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake the brownies for about 35 minutes, until the centres look set. Remove the brownies from the oven and allow them to cool, in the pans, to room temperature. 6. For the caramel sauce, place the sugar and water in a medium, light coloured saucepan with a lid over medium heat. Allow the sugar to melt in the water but do not stir it. After about 10 minutes, when the colour of the sugar begins to turn amber, remove the pan from the stove and stir in the cream. The mixture will bubble violently, so be careful. Stir the mixture until the cream is completely combined, whisk in the butter and pour the caramel into a heatproof bowl. 7. Add the vanilla and salt, mixing until they’re completely combined. Cover the caramel and allow it to cool to room temperature before refrigerating it. 8. Make the three batches of the thick dark chocolate ganache. 9. To make the frosting, place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Heat the cream in a small saucepan over low-medium heat until it’s just simmering, not boiling, 1-2 minutes. 10. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate, cover the bowl, and let it stand for 1-2 minutes. Use a fork to slowly mix the chocolate, until it’s smooth and fully incorporated with the cream. Use the chocolate ganache as directed in the recipes, either as-is or whipped. 11. To whip the chocolate ganache, cover it and allow it to cool completely to room temperature. Once it’s completely cool, use an electric mixer to whip it at high speed for 2-3 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. The colour should lighten, and the chocolate frosting should hold stiff peaks. 12. Add any extra flavours, and mix until they are fully incorporated. 13. Use the overhanging parchment paper to lift the brownie layers from the pans. Put the first brownie layer on a flat surface, then use a piping bag to pipe a border of ganache on it. Fill in the border with a layer of caramel, as much as you can without it spilling out, and then refrigerate the cake layer for 20 minutes. 14. Repeat with the second layer of brownie and caramel, reserving a bit of the caramel for the top of the cake. Place the third layer on top, and refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour, until the ganache feels firm and the cake feels stable. Then, frost the top of the cake with the rest of the ganache and drizzle the ganache with caramel. 15. This is best served slightly chilled. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Caramel Brownie Cake (Serves - 16 Slices) Chef Hossein Ghazaani, owner of Pizza Pan, Beverley says is there a better way to start the weekend than with gooey brownies layered together with a creamy caramel and dark chocolate ganache? Rich and indulgent, this recipe is both unique and familiar all at once, but certainly impressive either way... Health & Wellbeing From endless rosé to countless BBQs, there’s no denying summer can often be a time of indulgence. But with a few expert tricks up your sleeve, you can stay healthy and still enjoy yourself. Here, two local dietitians – share their secrets.... Eat Seasonally If there’s one way to instantly improve your diet, it’s eating seasonally. Eating fruit and vegetables that are ripe and ready in your local area means they are brimming with vitamins and minerals and ensures you are doing your bit for sustainable living, too. Aubergines, courgettes, watercress, strawberries, raspberries and cherries are in season now, so eat these in abundance. Try overnight oats made with oat bran, which is 50% higher in protein and fibre than porridge oats. Serve them with a fresh cherry compote sweetened with a small amount of stevia for a summery breakfast option. If you prefer a savoury breakfast, stock up on seasonal watercress and make a salmon, watercress and cheddar frittata, which also works well for lunch. A creamy courgette dhal made with coconut milk is a fantastic supper option, while something like a roasted aubergine and ricotta dip is great to serve with crudités. Start Your Day Right We believe in eating three balanced meals each day, as well as two snacks, each one with balanced food groups. It’s important not to eliminate any food group or make it the enemy. Combining a little of each macronutrient (protein, fat and carbs) at each meal supports the balancing of blood sugar levels and hormones. Don’t be tempted to skip breakfast if you are looking to lose a few pounds – increasing studies show those who eat breakfast are better able to maintain their weight. For a refreshing summer breakfast, try a yoghurt and summer berry compote, or a smoothie made with mango, papaya and ginger. If you’re making a smoothie, our top tip is to include some Greek yoghurt, which will increase the protein content and keep you fuller for longer. If you prefer a hot breakfast, try a purple porridge made with oat bran, blueberries and fresh figs. Exercise Daily We believe that small amounts of movement daily is integral to a healthy lifestyle – move your body each day and it quickly becomes a habit. As the temperatures rise, it’s still important to exercise, but be savvy about how you do so. Avoid working out at the hottest points of the day – instead head out in the early morning or evening when it’s a little cooler. Aim to do 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise across the week, including some form of strengthening activities on at least two days. Remember that walking to work instead of driving or having a walking meeting, for example, can maximise your daily movement without overheating during the summer months. Be BBQ Savvy Chances are you’ve already got several BBQs in the diary, but they needn’t always be unhealthy. Barbecuing, or grilling, is actually a healthy cooking method which uses minimal additional fat. If you are hosting, offer a selection of lean protein options, such as chicken and fish. If you’re hosting vegans or vegetarians, try homemade chickpea burgers. If you are serving red meat, such as sausages or burgers, remember these options contain far higher amounts of saturated fat, so eat these in moderation. When loading your plate, aim for a palm-sized serving of protein and always fill your plate with vegetables first. Non-starchy vegetables such as grilled peppers, courgettes and aubergine are a good choice – they are brimming with fibre and will keep you fuller for longer. Stock Up On Summer Essentials If you have the right ingredients to hand, you’ll be better prepared to make a quick, healthy meal or snack when the time comes. Legumes and pulses are a must- have – whether that be chickpeas, lentils, cannellini or butter beans, you can scatter them into salads for additional texture and flavour. Always choose pulses tinned in water and not brine. It also goes without saying that your fridge should always contain fresh produce with which you can make a spontaneous salad. It can also be handy to pre-freeze slices of lemon to add to sparkling or still water for a zesty twist. Stay Hydrated Making up two thirds of your body, water plays a vital role in everything from regulating body temperature to keeping your skin and digestion healthy. When the temperatures soar, you should reconsider your water intake as higher temperatures and humidity increase the speed of evaporation from the skin, which means you sweat more. Keep an eye on the colour of your urine, which is a handy gauge of hydration levels. Aim for a pale straw colour, and don’t wait until thirst kicks in to take a drink. Dehydration can manifest as tiredness, headaches and a lack of concentration. Aim for two to three litres per day, sipping regularly. Look After Your Liver With summer socialising back on the cards, it’s safe to say Pimms and rosé will be making an appearance. While alcohol isn’t banned we do advocate a sensible approach to drinking. Consider opting for a white wine spritzer – made with equal parts white wine and sparkling water as well as a scoop of ice and some fresh lemon. When it comes to spirits, gin and vodka are cleaner choices – just remember to serve with a mixer that contains low or no carbohydrates, such as slimline tonic. If you are looking to cut back on alcohol entirely, a glass of sparkling water with a dash of lime concentrate, a few mint leaves, cucumber spirals or frozen berries with a slice of lemon served in a gorgeous glass is a great substitute. Get An Early Night Getting a good night’s sleep when it’s hot can be tricky, but making your bedroom a cool sanctuary will pay dividends. If you don’t get adequate shuteye, you could see a 30% drop in energy levels. Set a reminder on your phone to be in bed by 9pm – if possible – and try to avoid screens past this point, too. Where possible, try to keep your bedroom cool – ideally around 18°C if possible and keep it as dark as possible for good quality sleep. Health & Wellbeing In today’s world, incredible advances in technology allow us to connect with our loved ones, wherever they are, but that can also come at a cost of feeling overwhelmed by being permanently connected and constantly bombarded with information. But, fortunately, there is no doubt that time spent interacting with nature can be a welcome tonic for the mind and body. Mental health charity Mind explains that spending time in green spaces, or growing food and flowers, can have positive effects on mood, reducing feelings of stress, and helping us to feel more relaxed. If you’re keen to take up gardening, and want to develop a relaxing green space of your own, it can be tricky to know where to start. In order to create an environment that helps you switch off and become more mindful, it’s useful to think about the five senses when planning your space. By considering sound, sight, taste, touch, and smell, you can begin to develop a sensory garden that helps you tune-in to your surroundings, and provides a necessary break from the stressors of daily life. 1. SOUND Natural noises, such as rainfall and birdsong, are recognised as being peaceful and calming. Rather than listening to them via an app, you can easily tune-in to the real thing. Hanging bird feeders in sheltered spots, or placing a bird bath, will encourage and support wildlife numbers. Installing a bubbling water feature will mean gentle background noise in your garden, too. You should also consider that certain plants and trees, such as long grasses and willow, will create peaceful sounds in the wind, and that more dense foliage can help to block out unwanted noise from nearby roads. 2. TASTE Growing plants you can eat is a magical process. It’s hugely satisfying, and allows us to nurture and observe the development from small seeds to kitchen ingredients. Having an ongoing supply of spinach, beans, or salad leaves means you’ll spend less money at the supermarket, and avoid considerable amounts of plastic packaging. You’re also likely to waste less food, having appreciated the delicate growing process. If you’re a tea drinker, then it’s wonderful to grow herbs, such as mint, that can be infused in hot water for a relaxing brew. You can also research other botanicals that are great for cocktails and decorating cakes. 3. TOUCH Getting your hands dirty in the process of planting and tending to a garden is a mindful practice in itself, but you can also enhance the experience by introducing a patchwork of textures into your space. Try choosing different plants with soft, shiny, waxy, or hairy foliage. A mixture of cobbles and smooth tiles can be used to create pathways and patios in order to provide a range of textures. If you’ve got space, think about incorporating a springy lawn to walk over barefoot, or run your fingers through for an instant connection to nature. 4. SMELL Scent is often the first thing we associate with a garden, given the wonderful fragrance produced by many beautiful flowers. Depending on your preference, you can grow lavender and jasmine for the ultimate relaxing scents. Try roses, sweet peas, or honeysuckle for sensuous summer smells, or citrus fruits and tomato plants for wafts that are zesty and uplifting. Of course, stimulating smells aren’t limited to flowering plants. Autumnal leaves, rich compost, and freshly cut grass are all nostalgic scents that can help ground us, and identify changing seasons. 5. SIGHT When working on a computer, there’s something inspiring and refreshing about a view of trees or other greenery through the window. Create this for yourself at home by transforming your overgrown space or concrete patio into a luscious, green oasis of calm. Of course, colours have a big impact on our mood, so consider this when selecting flowering plants and decor for your garden. Typically, white and purples induce thoughtfulness and reflection, while hot colours, like orange and yellow, are linked with joy and excitement. You can get brilliant glazed terracotta pots, patterned cushions, and even outdoor rugs to add a splash of colour and something special to look at. For truly unique features, try upcycling furniture for your outdoor space. Old wooden drawers or crates can work well for miniature herb gardens, or add an old mirror to elongate your space – whatever will bring a smile to your face. Using the five senses can be a helpful starting point when creating a special spot for unwinding. However, if you’re still stuck for inspiration, try wandering round other gardens or natural areas, such as woodland. Here you’ll experience plants, materials, sounds, and smells that you can often replicate in your own garden. Just remember, you don’t have to have a large outdoor space in order to feel closer to nature. A conservatory, balcony, or even window box, can be ideal for growing plants, developing your green fingers, and boosting wellbeing. Motoring If you’ve been paying attention to your TV screens lately you won’t fail to have noticed the new Nissan Qashqai. For the car that kicked off the Crossover craze is entering its third generation, with the arrival of a new model in showrooms and a major advertising campaign to support it. Built in Britain at Nissan’s Sunderland factory, the Qashqai has become one of our favourite cars since it first appeared in 2007 and has regularly been in the top five for UK sales. It has matured to be a car of our times and looks the part in every way with sharp lines, a high tech interior and ready to roll for the electric age. Priced from £23,535 – a slight increase over the outgoing model – the newcomer will be powered initially by a 1.3-litre mild-hybrid engine developing either 138 or 156bhp. Later, it will be joined by the first of Nissan’s new e-Power engines that uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine to generate electricity to drive the car. The range opens with the Visia trim, powered by the 138 horsepower engine with a manual gearbox. Stepping up to the Acenta Premium model sees the price rise to £26,135 with the same engine and gearbox combination, though the more powerful version 156bhp 1.3-litre petrol unit is priced from £26,855 - a £720 premium. This model is also available with an automatic gearbox, taking the price up to £28,455. N-Connecta and Tekna trims are available with every powertrain offered on the new Qashqai, starting from £28,305 and £30,845 respectively. These grades also offer the option of four-wheel drive, but this set-up is only available in conjunction with Nissan’s more powerful 156bhp 1.3 DIG-T engine and CVT automatic transmission, with prices starting from £32,335 in N-Connecta trim. There’s a range-topping Tekna+ trim too. It’s not offered with the entry level 138bhp engine and manual gearbox, and is only available with the more powerful 156bhp engine, either with front- wheel drive (manual or CVT automatic) or four- wheel-drive. It’s priced from £34,175. Both Tekna and Tekna+ are highly equipped with the likes of a 10.8- inch head up display, a 12.3-inch TFT instrument panel and a nine-inch central display screen connected to the NissanConnect navigation and entertainment systems which are fully smartphone compatible. The new car is bigger all round than before – its 35mm longer, 32mm wider and 10mm higher – with a wheelbase increased by 20mm which has improved handling considerably. Luggage capacity is also increased and ranges from 436 litres to a maximum of 1,621 litres with the rear seats removed. With them folded flat the available space is 1,379 litres. Nissan’s engineers have been very clever with the rear door design on the new car which now open to 85 degrees – much wider than before – making getting in and out easier and a great bonus to anyone needing to strap a youngster into a child seat. Extra legroom in the rear is also significant and the cabin is much more comfortable and user- friendly with high quality trim and pleasant design throughout. Everything about the car moves it up a league in terms of quality and refinement and the same is true about its performance. The top-of-the-range cars tried with the higher-powered engine saw acceleration from 0 to 62mph in 9.2 seconds with a top speed of 124mph for the automatic and 9.5 seconds and 128mph for the manual with official fuel returns of 43.8mpg and 44.1 respectively. Emissions are rated at 146 and 145g/km. The handling and composure of the car is much improved and it feels nicely solid and accommodating with a good A New Nissan Qashqai It’s the car that started a craze and the latest Nissan Qashqai looks certain to keep this popular family car at the top of the sales charts. Travel July 2021 Get Your Business Noticed The Lake District is one of the UK’s most enduring and popular destinations – not just for British holidaymakers, but for people who flock to see the stunning landscape from all over the world, too. Whether you’re a dedicated walker or not, the area holds plenty of appeal for families, couples and solo travellers, alike... Windermere Windermere is a quaint town named after its ten-mile-long lake – the largest in the area. Thanks to its shoreside location, there are plenty of water-based activities to take part in, from boat cruises, to paddle boarding. Climbers can hike Scafell Pike, the tallest mountain in England, while those with kids in tow can take the short trip to Bowness-on- Windermere to visit The World of Beatrix Potter. Keswick The market town of Keswick is where to head for the best organic produce and handmade gifts, all of which are sold at the farmer’s market every Thursday and Saturday. Surrounded by famous natural sites such as the Cat Bells mountain, Friar’s Crag and Borrowdale Valley, Keswick’s Derwentwater lake is the ideal spot to take in the breath-taking scenery. Embark on an eight-mile walk around the water or take a cruise on the town’s open deck boat, Keswick Launch. Water sports fans can also head to the marina, while those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land should visit Castlerigg Stone Circle, with its panoramic views and stunning mountain backdrop. Ambleside This town is bursting with National Trust properties, from Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top farmhouse to the 17th-century Bridge House and colourful Stagshaw Gardens. An Ambleside highlight is Stock Ghyll Force, a stunning 70-foot waterfall that, come springtime, is surrounded by flowers and grassland. Head to Waterhead Pier to catch a steamer ferry to one of the other lakeside villages, or hire a row boat to travel at your own pace. Ullswater Ullswater is home to the second largest lake in the area, surrounded by mountains on one side and rolling hills on the other. Along with activities such as steamboat cruises, kayak tours, guided walks and pony trekking, the biggest attraction here is Aira Force, one of the most famous waterfalls in the Lake District, which is said to have inspired Wordsworth’s poetry. There’s a mile-long walking route around the waterfall, where you can expect to spot a variety of flora and fauna, including ‘wishing trees’ which, as legend has it, bring you luck. Ullswater is also home to Helvellyn, the third highest peak in England, which makes for a fantastic, albeit challenging, hike. Grasmere Grasmere is a pretty village popular with tourists thanks to its rows of 19th- and 20th-century stone houses, as well as traditional tea rooms and gift shops. A trip to Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage is a must – the picturesque property has been turned into a museum honouring the poet and houses some of his original manuscripts. For an afternoon treat, head to Faeryland, a lakeside garden complete with row boats and a charming tea room, or Sarah Nelson’s Gingerbread Shop, which has become a local landmark. Solos welcome please ask for prices We are certainly moving forwards … Although we are still not actively encouraging travel abroad this year it is looking more & more likely. We are advising anyone wishing to book that rules and regulations are changing at the drop of a hat and you my find yourself in an awkward situation. Ensure you have space in your diary to take time out isolating on your return. Please also ensure you are fully up to date with the paperwork you may need on entry to another country as well as having everything in order for arriving back into the UK. Just one last thing to mention on this subject - does your holiday insurance cover you? You may have a green light to travel to a country but it may still be not recommended by the Foreign office so you must check both. It the FO say not to travel even if on the green list your insurance will not be valid. This past week we have received a considerable increase in bookings for next year. As we are now half way through 2021 I think to have a holiday abroad to look forward to in 2022 is a great idea. We have many clients booking scenic cruises visiting fewer ports. Norway is very popular especially sailing from the UK without the hassle of an airport. You will see sheer cliffs with tumbling waterfalls the scenery is stunning and you can simply sit back and immerse yourself in your surroundings. A balcony is a plus allowing you to simply step out of your cabin in seconds ensuring you do not miss out on scenic highlights and wildlife. Late May and June the Waterfalls are at their best, powerful due to the snow melt and I have to say I have experienced very nice weather at this time of the year enjoying light nights and Midnight sun. As an alternative if you travel in the winter this is the time to search for the Northern Lights. From October to March you have the best chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis. Hurtigruten specialise in Coastal Voyages and if you take a 12 day cruise and you do not see the lights they will offer you a free 7 night cruise only* to return and try again (*flights not included). The UK has so much to offer and there are holidays to suit everyone. We had our 2nd group return from Jersey last week and what a wonderful time they had all enjoyed. We always make a point of speaking to every client on there return and we had fantastic reviews all round. Many guests have special diets these days a young lady who is Vegan commented she would not have received better food anywhere. A number of travellers had never flown from Humberside airport and found this a real bonus, it gave me the opportunity to say how I tend to fly anywhere in the world from Humberside as it is such a stress free start to any journey. Last week we visited Pembrokeshire taking in the smallest city in the UK St David's, dominated by its wonderful Cathedral and dramatic coastline. A visit to Caldey Island was wonderful the 20 minute boat ride from Tenby gave us magnificent views of sweeping beaches and the colourful buildings of the town. On the island there is plenty to occupy anyone. We visited the islands chocolate factory, although we could not see a great deal the smell tempted everyone to make a purchase. The Abbey & gardens are well tended and there are lots of walking trails for the energetic to enjoy. Picton Castle was homely & welcoming, we enjoyed blooming gardens at Powys Castle and an informative tour around the Elan Valley Reservoir. Although we did not indulge we saw many opportunities for families to enjoy theme parks there really is something for every generation. There is still plenty of availability to get away in the UK as a travel agent we know where to look to get you away rather than you looking for a needle in a haystack. It is also worth considering booking for 2022 now. I have a feeling that many people will have fallen in love with staying in our own country this year and look forward to many more local adventures. We are gradually putting together our tours, in fact our Jersey specials have just been released today! A quick update on cruising. Many companies are now offering bookings for sailings in 2023 so if you have a bucket list wish then booking now there are special savings to be made. You may wish to try out a different cruise line? Or be new to cruise? Virgin cruises is a slightly different concept for example Virgin Scarlet has more than 20 eateries and all food is cooked to order. Drinks are not included in the fare but there is the opportunity to have a pre paid tab and prices are reasonable. A new cruise line has emerged out of the ashes of Cruise & Maritime - Ambassador cruise lines. They are not protected by ABTA but operate a trust fund to protect clients monies. Literature July 2021 Get Your Business Noticed If you want something new to read this month, look no further. From a follow up to one of the biggest thrillers in recent years to a trio of holiday reads, July’s selection has something for everyone... The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and the micro- aggressions, she’s thrilled when Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve barely started swapping natural hair care tips, though, before a string of uncomfortable events cause Nella to become the office outcast and Hazel employee of the year. Then the notes begin to appear on Nella’s desk: “Leave Wagner. Now.” It’s hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon realises that there is a lot more at stake than her career. Dark, funny and furiously entertaining, this will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last twist. The Maidens by Alex Michaelides The Maidens is the next novel from Alex Michaelides, the man behind the phenomenally successful page-turner The Silent Patient. St Christopher’s College, Cambridge, is a closed world to most. But for Mariana Andros – a group therapist struggling through her private grief – it’s where she met her late husband. For her niece, Zoe, it’s the tragic scene of her best friend’s murder. As memory and mystery entangle Mariana, she finds a society full of secrets, which has been shocked by the murder of one of its own. Behind the scenes, she finds a web of jealousy and rage which emanates from an exclusive set of students known as ‘The Maidens’, a group under the sinister influence of enigmatic professor Edward Fosca. Fosca seems to know more than anyone about the murders – and the victims – and soon becomes the prime suspect in Mariana’s obsessive investigation. Omelette by Jessie Ware If you love Table Manners – the successful podcast hosted by musician Jessie Ware and her mum, Lennie – you’ll love this recent mini memoir from Jessie, which focuses on food. Named Omelette: Food, Love, Chaos & Other Conversations, it’s a collection of things she’s done, seen, thought and tasted. Like food critic Grace Dent’s recent hit Hungry, this will leave you desperate to try the many dishes she peppers throughout the book as she tackles everything from childbirth to rosé-fuelled dinners at Chateau Marmont. Warm and organised into bite-sized essays, this is ideal for anyone commuting or wanting to dip in and out of a book over the course of a weekend. Assembly by Natasha Brown Natasha Brown has spent a decade working in financial services, after studying Maths at Cambridge University. She began work on her debut novel – Assembly – after receiving a 2019 London Writers Award in the literary fiction category. The narrator is a Black British woman, who’s preparing to attend a lavish garden party at her boyfriend’s family estate in the English countryside. At the same time, she is considering the carefully assembled pieces of herself. As the minutes tick down and the future beckons, she can’t escape the question: is it time to take it all apart? Assembly is a story about the stories we live, namely those of race, class, safety, freedom, winners and losers. And it is about one woman daring to take control of her own story, even at the cost of her life. A thrilling debut. Sunset by Jessie Cave Sunset is the debut novel by actress, comedian and cartoonist Jessie Cave. Ruth and Hannah are sisters. Bonded by love and friendship, they are perplexingly different characters: Hannah is radiant, organised and hardworking; Ruth is forever single and totally aimless. Together they are invincible. Every summer they go on a budget holiday together where they bicker, laugh, fight and make up. But this time is different. Something bad happens. And now everything is changed forever. This bittersweet love story is about needing someone else as much as they need you, an ode to our most powerful bonds, and how, when all seems lost, we can find joy in the most unexpected places. Conversations On Love by Natasha Lunn After years of interviewing people about their relationships as a journalist, for her Conversations on Love newsletter (which has over 10k subscribers) and studying psychodynamic couples therapy at the Tavistock Centre, Natasha Lunn has learnt that our daily questions about love are often rooted in three bigger ones: how do we find love? How do we sustain it? And how do we survive when we lose it? Interviewing authors and experts, as well as drawing on her own experience – including the mistakes she made with love when she was young, her relationship with her parents, brother and friends, and her more recent experiences of marriage, miscarriage and motherhood – Natasha guides us through the complexities of these three questions. The result is a book of wisdom without judgement; a book to learn from, to lose and find yourself in. Inside, expect to hear Philippa Perry on falling in love slowly, Dolly Alderton on vulnerability, Alain de Botton on the psychology of being alone, Roxane Gay on soulmates, Candice Carty-Williams on friendship and Lisa Taddeo on grief. Keep The Receipts: Three Women, Real Talk, No Filter by Tolani Shoneye, Milena Sanchez and Audrey Indome The Receipts is a fun and honest chart-topping podcast fronted by Tolani Shoneye, Audrey Indome and Milena Sanchez. This book is all the conversations and advice you’ve had with your friends, all in one place. Crying over that ‘situationship’ and needing someone to remind you you’re amazing? In a dilemma with your friends and not sure the best way forward? Can’t figure out how to dump the boyfriend who has never made you orgasm? The Receipts girls have got your back. From their different approaches to love to their advice on building strong friendships; from those conversations about sex we never have and how to enjoy life as a Black woman or a woman of colour, this book always keeps is real, authentic and funny. A celebration of the wonderful messes, mistakes, successes, highs and lows of three audacious women who are still trying to get it right and live their best lives. Sista Sister by Candice Brathwaite I Am Not Your Baby Mother was a landmark publication and top five Sunday Times bestseller in 2020. A thought-provoking and inspirational guide to life as a Black British mum, it launched Candice onto a wider stage. She’s now a regular on Lorraine, a contributing editor on Grazia and familiar across the UK media talking about fashion and beauty as well as family, parenting and race. Sista Sister is a compilation of essays about all the things Candice wishes someone had talked to her about when she was a young Black girl growing up in London. From family and money to Black hair and fashion, as well as sex and friendships between people of different races, these essays are wise, honest, confronting, beautiful and funny. Inside you’ll find lessons on life, love, friendship, family, death and social media – for everyone. All the books in this feature are available to purchase now. Best New Reads for July

Bygone Beverley - In association with the East Riding Archive July 2021 Get Your Business Noticed Have you ever wondered what would happen if a nuclear bomb was dropped on our region? Thankfully at present, this seems quite fanciful, but during the Cold War the threat of a nuclear attack was very real, and nowhere in the UK was safe, including the Beverley area! This created significant challenges for the local authorities, who were tasked with making sure we were well-equipped and prepared, should the unthinkable happen. Some of our archives give us a glimpse of how councils at the time were looking at ways of giving us the best possible chance of survival in the event of a nuclear strike. Emergency planning slides in the Humberside County Council archive collection, reveal that the local authority made detailed experiments on the construction of blast shelters for families living in the former county of Humberside. One such experiment was ‘Falfox’, carried out at Wawne, the designated emergency HQ for a nuclear attack, from 12th to 18th November 1979. It looked at whether a typical family might be able to survive the fallout by hiding in an underground shelter, with limited food provisions. The slides show that the shelter took 30 hours to construct, and had an internal capacity of 950 cubic feet. The cost of provisions was £58, which included items like porridge, whiskey and sherry. We’re not precisely sure what the results of the experiment were, but these slides are chilling proof of how seriously the threat of nuclear war was taken, and how close we must have been to nuclear armageddon. We can only hope that world events don’t lead to a repeat of the threat endured on all sides in the Cold War. The slides are available to view on request in the Archives & Local Studies searchroom. What’s On The recent sunny spell of weather has been a magnet for many Beverley club members of different ages and abilities to compete on the Westwood and not surprisingly attracted new members to join their successful Academy scheme. A women and girls’ taster day at Beverley Golf Club recruited 30 women and girls to ‘Get into Golf’ and the Club Professional, Paul Gibson commented ‘The day was a real success and I am pleased to say we have now recruited a third and fourth group of Academy members’. Members volunteered to help provide fun games for the new recruits and many of them ventured onto the course for the first time. One lady said ‘Hitting the ball with a driver for the first time was a bit scary but the Club have shortened the course for beginners so that when we are aiming for the flag it is only 150 yards and much more achievable’. Due to the lockdown restrictions last year’s event was forced to be rearranged which meant some people had to wait nearly twelve months to swing their first club. But the waiting paid off and everyone enjoyed making friends and learning a new skill. Our club professional, Paul has recently appointed a new member to his staffing team and Natalie (pictured above), a proficient junior golfer from the Nottingham area remarked ‘Everyone has made me feel so welcome at the club and I have really appreciated this Future looking bright for local golf club. because I have moved away from my home town’. The fine weather has meant that the Club has been able to organise and enjoy several competitions and prize giving in warm conditions. One of them was organised by Paul’s assistant professional, Theo Blake who was delighted with the response to his AmAm competition and the entry fees are going towards his PGA training. The halfway house on the 8th green offered a welcome selection of cold drinks served by family and friends. Theo impressed the teams with his drive on the 9th tee to a length of over 300 yards which meant that some teams only had to chip and putt and added some welcome points to their score. The winners were Dave Ham, Nick Daniels, Dave Anderson & Graham Kynman. There were also prizes for a guess of his longest drive in the studio and raffle prizes donated by members. The President of the club, Brendan O’Connor holds this position for three years and organised a President’s Ladies competition for the second year running. The weather was absolutely perfect and the ladies were able to enjoy a cold glass of Prosecco in the club garden during the early evening. Brendan then hosted the evening presentation for lady members who won competitions in 2020 and Veronica Farrar, Lady Captain for that year announced the winners and thanked the members for all their support remarking that ‘Although this was a year to forget I cannot forget the encouragement and support I received from all the members during this difficult time’. Looking forward to August the Club is hosting a prestigious competition called the BERGC Challenge Cup which is the oldest trophy in the county first being presented in 1893. There are substantial prizes offered by the local firm of Hodgsons Sealants and the club is recruiting teams from all over the County. This is a stableford competition open to men, ladies or mixed who must be from the same club and hold a handicap limit of 23.0 for men and 21.9 for women. One incentive is the price includes bacon sandwich, hot drink on arrival and a Barbeque to finish after the team efforts on the course. July 2021 Get Your Business Noticed

Gardening While it is the perfect time to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labour from the previous year, there are still key jobs that need tending to. 1. Carry out mindful watering Hot weather means watering is even more key, as plants get thirsty too. ‘Make sure you keep your show-stopping display of summer colour by regularly watering container plants and add a balanced liquid fertiliser every other week to encourage strong healthy growth and continual flowering. Remove dead flowers as soon as they go over to encourage more to follow. It is important that you water the trees, shrubs and perennials that were planted in spring. Make sure you are watering the base of the plant and avoid wetting the leaves as they won’t absorb any water this way and wetting the leaf tissue can even encourage fungal diseases. 2. Thin out fruit trees During peak gardening season, the favourable conditions for plant growth means that fruit trees can abundantly over-produce. Large quantities of heavy fruits such as apples, pears and plums on the branches can often result in a final crop of disappointingly small fruits. This is due to the high demand put on the tree’s resources and the limited sunlight penetrating its heavy branches. July is prime time to thin out your dense crops by removing any excess or damaged fruits from the plant, enabling it to develop a more evenly ripe crop of fruits. 3. Cultivate kitchen garden crops Tomato, pepper and cucumber crops require regular feeding with a high potash tomato fertiliser. Pinch out side-shoots of tomatoes to concentrate growing energy into trusses of fruit. Water regularly and consistently. Plant out leeks and brassicas for a winter supply. Late sowings of beetroot, radishes, lettuce and salad crops grow quickly in the warm soils for an extended season of fresh vegetables. Continue to earth up main-crop potatoes, to avoid tubers being exposed to the light and turning green. Early potatoes will be ready for harvesting, maturing around 10 weeks from planting. 4. Love your lawn Summertime means that everything will be growing extremely fast and as a result, you will need to make sure you are mowing your lawn once a week to keep it in good health. It is also important to water your lawn regularly to prevent it from turning brown and drying out during the hotter months. If your ground has become dry, spike it gently with a garden fork before watering to aid the penetration of the water. Regular mowing is best for a manicured lawn, reducing the cutting height in hot weather to help prevent drying out. Keeping the blades slightly higher helps the grass resist the extra summer wear. 5. Take cuttings from your perennials Encourage fresh growth by cutting back herbaceous plants such as Delphinium, Lupin and hardy Geranium after their first flush of flower. Put supports in place around tall herbaceous perennials such as Delphiniums and Gladioli to prevent damage from wind and rain. Tender perennials such as Fuchsias are best propagated from cuttings, and so July is a great time to get snipping. As young plants root more easily, cuttings should be taken from the tender new growth for the season. Either pot the plants now so that they develop sufficient roots to survive in the winter, or hold onto your cuttings until the following spring. Summer prune Wisteria, cutting whippy side shoots back to around five leaves from the main stem. This will encourage new flower buds to form and improve your display next year. 6. Give bees a boost If June has been as predictably hot and wet as usual then nectar- rich flowers could be few and far between so help out the honey bees by planting lavender, jasmine and bergamot. Make sure the flightpath between flowers – and, if you have one, a beehive or bee house – is free from overgrowth. The bees will be doing their best to harvest the pollen so the last thing they need is to have to risk losing their precious load in the long grass. 7. Collect and store seeds Collect the seed of flowers that you want to grow again next year. Store the seeds in paper bags or envelopes, labelled with the plant name and harvest date. Preserve them in a cool, dry place. 8. Tend to greenhouse plants Harden off remaining bedding plants you have been growing from young plug plants. Acclimatise over a period of a few days before planting out in their final positions. Plant up any pots with tender vegetables or Mediterranean herbs that will appreciate the warmer and sheltered growing position. 8 Jobs to do in July July 2021 Get Your Business Noticed

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. ‘FREEDOM’ DAY The so-called Freedom Day is coming up this month. I must say I have been pretty cautious throughout all of this, but the last couple of weeks I have actually started going out to places other than the supermarket! We’ve been to the beach, had a Mr Moos ice-cream at Skipsea, went for fish and chips in Hornsea, then this weekend I went to the Olive Tree restaurant at Ellerker Garden Centre with my daughter for scampi and chips (she had vegetarian lasagne) – and it was amazing! I’m still not sure I’m ready for busy crowds, but isn’t it brilliant just to be able to go places?! Next up, we’re going to The Deep. It is one of my favourite places to go and, as a charity, it needs all the support we can give it – especially post-lockdown. BAKE OFF – THE PROFESSIONALS I don’t know if you watch this but if you don’t you should – especially if you’re a Bake Off fan. It’s already been on Channel 4 for a month or so but I’m sure you could see it on catch up somewhere. Not only are most of the bakes great, there are also some total disasters – but you’ve got to watch it for the judges Benoit and Cherish. They really shoot from the hip – and these professional bakers are in no doubt how well (or not) they’ve done every week! Love it! Love it! Love it! JUST FOR FUN! I saw this joke on Facebook and it made me laugh! I follow a Language Nerds group (no surprise there!) and this it what they posted: Question: Is your stomach FLAT? Me: Yeah, but the ‘L’ is silent!!!
