5 BeverleyMag AUGUST 2013 Womens Page Figure it out. I’ve been accused of being both a deep thinker and a airhead with entirely too much time on my hands. Either way, I do spend a lot of time asking the age old question... WHY? l Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are almost dead? l Why do banks charge a fee on ‘insufficient funds’ when they already know there’s not enough money? l Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars but they have to check when you say the paint is still wet? l Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? l Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a gun at him? l Whose idea was it to put an ‘S’ in the word ‘lisp’? l If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? l Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use, the bubbles are always white? l Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? l Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialised? l Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance? l Why is it that plastic bags never open on your first try? l How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures? l When we’re in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping trolley then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, ‘It’s all right?’ Well, it isn’t all right, so why don’t we say, ‘That really hurt. Why don’t you watch where you’re going?’ l Why is it that whenever you try to catch something that’s falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? l In winter, why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat? l How come you never hear father-in-law jokes? l And finally...How do thermos flasks know how to keep cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot? Those are the questions. I’m still looking for the answers! WHY? BEVERLEYMAG To contact please email: ask@beverleymag.co.uk or telephone: 01964 552 470

6 Could I cope in a medical crisis? By Parent Blogger Mousey Maud We’ve been very lucky with the boys’ health - no major crises so far. The worst medical “emergency” we’ve had was an overreaction to what was a standard tummy bug (hindsight is a wonderful thing!) When Zak was still very small I did attend a paediatric first aid course, however, that was a couple of years ago and I don’t have much confidence that I could remember what to do in an emergency. And it seems I’m far from alone. A recent nationwide survey by the childcare website Findababysitter. com found that 72% of UK parents “wouldn’t know how to assist an unconscious child, administer CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) or attend to burns and scalds”. Just 28% of the 1,000 parents surveyed had been on a first aid course, which is essential for all registered childminders and nannies. This “brings to light the shocking lack of first aid knowledge amongst the UK’s parents” say the researchers. Those with children aged six to nine years have the worst record, with 80% reporting they wouldn’t know what to do in a medical emergency. Nevertheless, the same survey showed that parents rank safety as the second most important factor (after cost) when choosing childcare. “Leaving your children with a childcare professional is one of the hardest things a parent has to do,” says Tom Harrow, CEO of Findababysitter.com, “but when you look at it from this angle, it really puts things into perspective - are our kids safer with a nanny or childminder than they are with us?” Personally I don’t recall child safety being mentioned in our, otherwise great, NHS antenatal course. Perhaps it should be. A quick online search shows there is an abundance of courses being run regularly all around the UK. My searc also revealed a new app that has lifesaving advice for children and babies - the Baby and Child First Aid app - from the charity British Red Cross. It has a range of useful videos, clear advice, a ‘test yourself’ quiz section, and is compatible with the Apple iPhone, iPad, Apple iPod Touch and Android tablets. As well as teaching first aid skills so users can be prepared in advance, it offers instant help if a child is choking, suffers an injury, or is knocked unconscious. There’s also a local hospital finder covering all of the UK. It can also record a child’s medication needs, allergies, and family contact details. The app is available free at Apple’s iTunes store and the Google Play marketplace. Luckily most of the information and videos are stored on the app, so no internet connection is needed. I’m finding it easy to use and I’m learning a lot, although it is a bit frightening to think of a medical emergency happening to one of my boys. Nevertheless, I know, like many parents in a recent British Red Cross survey, I would feel more capable with the support of first aid advice. Joe Mulligan, of the British Red Cross, says: “Our studies show that 70% of parents have taken their baby or child to an A&E unit at some point. We want to raise parents’ confidence in first aid scenarios. I think most people appreciate the value of having such potentially life-saving knowledge at their fingertips.” The charity previously made a similar app for adults, also free, which has been downloaded over half a million times. What a great use of technology! Please mention when responding to our advertisers. Thank you. BEVERLEYMAG Womens Page BeverleyMag AUGUST 2013

BEVERLEYMAG Womens Page BeverleyMag AUGUST 2013 If you are being subjected to any form of harassment, domestic violence or abuse, then the first port of call should always be the police. However, it is also possible to obtain a civil Injunction, legally known as a “Non-Molestation Order”. This Order will forbid the abuser from “molesting” you and can have attached to it a “Power of Arrest”, which means that if the Order is breached, the police can immediately arrest the abuser. The breach is punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment. If you consider that your right of occupation in a property is in danger, then you can apply for what is known as an “Occupation Order”. This Order will stipulate who should live, or not live in the home. The Occupation Order can also go further and stipulate who is going to pay the rent or mortgage on the property. If you are not the legal owner of a property that you have been living in, i.e. it is owned by your partner, there are other measures that you can take that will protect your financial, as well as your rights as an occupier in the home. An example of this is registering a “Restriction” against the legal Title, which means that the property owner will not be able to deal with property, e.g. place the property on the market for sale without notifying you first. A sale or any other such dealing may only proceed once you have applied to remove the Restriction from the Title. You may also have a right to register what is known as “Matrimonial Home Right” against the Title to the property, which will be a Charge that is binding on all third parties including mortgagees. The Charge itself will specify that you have the right to occupy the property and as such you cannot be evicted or excluded from the same. This can be particularly important where you are living in the home with children and have nowhere else to go. ABUSE, HARASSMENT, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

11 Please mention when responding to our advertisers. Thank you. BEVERLEYMAG BeverleyMag AUGUST 2013 How do I spot a cowboy mechanic? Do you know your crankshaft from your caliper? If not you’re probably one of the people who pops open the bonnet and stares in at a mass of ‘whatsits and thingamybobs’ finding a trustworthy and diligent mechanic can be a very tricky task. Which?, the consumer watchdog, recently published a set of figures that make for a depressing read for British motorists. Their undercover investigation involved 62 cars; each car had been rigged with a number of faults. Of the 62 cars, 90% failed to spot at least one problem on the car. Half missed low brake fluid while 20% overlooked low tyre pressure in a rear tyre. Only eight cars were returned fully repaired! How can I identify a competent garage? There are a number of accreditation schemes already available to garages and repair centres. If a company is accredited they should display a certificate stating their achievement and the supporting organisation. The Office of Fair Trading, Bosch, Good Garage Scheme and the Automotive Technician Accreditation all support UK mechanics. How busy is the garage? If a garage is empty, it’s not a good sign. There may be a quick turn around, but if it’s empty, it’s normally for a reason. Is the garage recognised by any of the accredited schemes? An accredited garage is more likely to outperform one without accreditation. Don’t be afraid to ask! How interested does the mechanic sound? The more vague or uninterested a mechanic sounds, normally correlates to the standard of service you’ll receive. Ideally a mechanic should Continued over page BEVMAG MOTORING FEATURE

12 Please mention when responding to our advertisers. Thank you. BEVERLEYMAG MOTORING BeverleyMag AUGUST 2013 listen intently to your problems and provide detailed diagnoses for the problem. How much should the job cost? Ring a few garages asking for quotations on the same job; it’s the simplest way of working how much it should cost. Once you agree to a price, ask for it in writing, that way if they try to charge more you can argue your side. Completion and Collection Date – It’s common sense that a good mechanic should have a good idea of how long a job will take. Completion and collection dates should be stuck to and confirmed in writing. Ask to see any replaced parts This won’t help mechanic-customer relations, but it will certainly prove whether they are telling the truth. Insist on full written details of the service Mechanics should provide all written details of the work carried out on an invoice or receipt. The more detail the better. Maintaining vehicles requires a skilled hand and experience, so it’s only fair you pay for that service. Not all mechanics or garages are out to trick you; the majority are fair, friendly and reliable. Ask family and friends for a recommended centre, do your research and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

13 AUDI A3: TEST DRIVE MOTORING Redesigned from the ground up following the principles of ‘Audi ultra’ lightweight construction, the German motor tips the scales an impressive 80 kg lighter on average than its forerunner. The same meticulous pursuit of progress is evident in the sophisticated cabin, which genuinely breaks new ground in the class with standards of materials, workmanship and ergonomics that indisputably push the boundaries at this level. British Audi A3 models have launched with a choice of three specification options – SE, Sport and S line - all of which are extraordinarily well appointed. The Sport model, on test here, sits on beefy 17 inch alloy wheels and features the ‘Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system’. This enables you to choose from five modes which prescribe the car’s driving characteristics – Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Efficiency and Individual. They influence the weighting of the steering, the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal, the shift points of the S-tronic transmission, if fitted, and the parameters used by the optional adaptive cruise control system. Additional Sport features include a revitalizing two-zone climate control, sports seats, sports steering wheel and aluminium detailing inside and out. On the move, the A3 Sport oil-burner, although perched on firm and athletic springs, is not uncomfortable and it sticks to some of England’s more twisty roads like a limpet. There is plenty of room for you and your passenger in the front, although your friends in the rear seats might find it hard to stretch their legs out. That said, all the seats are supportive and the 2.0-litre 150 TDI lump allows you to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 8.6 seconds. But the car doesn’t stop there; where legal the needle will spin way up the dial to 134 mph. The rapid acceleration is made all the more easy to achieve thanks to the all-new A3’s slick six-speed manual gearbox. Not only is this first-class hatchback’s turbo diesel engine quick, it is also highly fuel efficient. Engine start-stop technology and energy recuperation systems enable the A3 2.0 TDI Sport to achieve up to 68.9 mpg – and this is the selling point. Yes, the Audi is quick, comfortable and stylish – but, more importantly, it will keep you from frequently forking out at the pumps. Out Going President Geoff Rawson hands over the chain of office to new President Les Ford at the Beverley Lions Handover dinner at the Driffield Golf Club on Monday 24th June 2013. Just before Lion Geoff handed over the chain of office, Lion Geoff thanked the secretary, Lion Richard Clatworthy and Treasurer, Lion Allen Ferguson who are both remaining in post for a further year. One of President Lion Geoff’s last official duties was to present Lion Harry Burton with a Melvin Jones Fellowship in recognition of his hard work, especially organising the Lions Golf Day at The Driffield Golf Club over the past 13 years (Melvin Jones founded The Lions Clubs in 1917 and the Fellowship is bestowed by Lions Clubs in appreciation and honour ). Lion Geoff then handed the Presidential chain to incoming President Lion Alan “Les” Ford. During the Lionistic year 2012-13 the Beverley Lions Club donated approximately £11,000 to mainly local groups and organisations, the money being raised by the Lions’ regular activities which include: Car Boot Sales at the Grammar School on the second Sunday of each month from March to November, Occasional Casino Nights operated for groups and parties, The annual Bonfire and Fireworks Display on the Westwood, The annual Golf Day at Driffield Golf Club. The Club also holds its annual Fun Run on New Year’s Day, places Christmas Lights on the Market Cross with a Christmas Tree below, operates “Light a candle for a loved one” at Christmas and holds Carol Singing sessions. The Club also provides Concerts for senior citizens several times a year. New Members Sought However most of the Lions are getting older and new members, particularly younger ones (of either sex) are needed to help us carry on these activities. Anyone interested in joining us or helping us (and we do find great enjoyment in our activities) is invited to contact us through our web site www.beverleylions.org.uk Les joined the Beverley Lions Club in 2007 and has worked on several committees in his time as a Lion. “Message in a Bottle” Les has been in charge of “Message in a Bottle”. This is a small plastic container that holds a form that you can fill in with all your medical details, Doctor and next of kin, then seal the lid and place the container in the fridge. Then you place a sticker on the inside of your front door and another on the door of the fridge, then if you need medical assistance the paramedic or ambulance service know to look in the fridge for the bottle, thus saving time trying to get information of your medical needs. This is free to anyone and the bottles can be collected from Pharmacies or Doctors’ surgeries. The last two years Les has organized the New Year’s Day Fun Run in Beverley. He was also one of the main organizers of the Lions Bonfire and Firework Display on the Beverley Westwood in November 2012 as well as many other events that the Beverley Lions Club arranges every year. Friends of the Lions In this year’s term of office Les hopes to attract more members to the Lions Club and also invite those people that would like to help the Lions but don’t want to become a member to join a “Friends of the Lions” club to help out on occasions when the Lions hold events that require a lot of man-power like The Fun Run, Bonfire and Car Boot Sales. If anyone is interested in helping please contact one of the Beverley Lions or contact Les directly on 866696 or through the Beverley Lions web site www.beverleylions .org.uk 15 BeverleyMag AUGUST 2013 Local News Beverley Lions New President BEVERLEYMAG To contact please email: ask@beverleymag.co.uk or telephone: 01964 552 470

Soon it’ll be local raspberries and cherries but a few weeks before we can help ourselves to free blackberries. All berries are packed full of anti-aging antioxidents, especially blueberries and cranberries that can also inhibit urinary infections. Cherries, classed as anti-inflammatory, contain cholesterol-lowering properties, as do many fruits such as cranberries, avocados and the strangely named dragon fruit. Sliced fresh pineapples and papaya, containing the enzymes bromain and papain respectively, are a good way to start any meal as they aid digestion. In fact papaya is ACE, containing loads of those very vitamins and, like kiwis, also high in minerals. Canteloupe and water melons, containing lycopene and potassium, like tomatoes and blueberries, are reputedly good for the memory. Recently laboratory tests have demonstrated that grape seed extract slows down Alzheimer’s and kills head and neck cancer cells. Interest is also being shown in the possible cancer-inhibiting qualities of blueberries, pineapples, papaya, olives and avocados. Lauric acid, the main fatty acid found in coconut oil, has antiviral, bacteria and parasite functions as guava and olive very likely have. Years ago we were eating fruit for some sweet juicy food, then also for their vitamin and mineral content, later as part of our 5-a-day and now for their other great qualities, almost medicinal in fact. So medicine or tasty fruit? No contest!!! BEVERLEYMAG To contact please email: ask@beverleymag.co.uk or telephone: 01964 552 470

Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, has said that he hopes his reforms to the national curriculum could allow his own children to in future compete with better-educated foreign students. Under the new plans, five-year-olds will have to learn fractions and traditional science subjects will be brought back into the classroom. Mr Gove, said the curriculum changes “can’t come quickly enough” because countries across the world are “doing better than our own”. Mr Gove told ITV’s Daybreak that he believed his two children would have better opportunities because of the changes. “I want my children, who are in primary school at the moment, to have the sort of curriculum that children in other countries have, which are doing better than our own,” he said. “Because, when my son and daughter graduate from school and then either go on to university or into the workplace, they’re competing for college places and jobs with folk from across the globe, and I want my children to receive an education as rigorous as any country’s.” 21 BeverleyMag AUGUST 2013 BEVMAG EDUCATION FEATURE This month we feature education which is one of the most important of the foundation stones in shaping our childrens development and future prospects. We have some fantastic educational establishments within the Beverley area from pre-school through school and on to college. Bishop Burton College is at the cutting edge of what is new and happening in local and national education. Students and parents should contact them to find out more about what they can offer. East Riding College has a vast range of courses that cater for those wanting to focus on specific careers or use it as a stepping stone to university. For those with youngsters just starting out on lifes educational journey please take a look at the great facilities on offer at Fir Trees Nursery and Safe & Sound Nursery they both have a good OFSTED ratings and fantastic staff. If you want your child to have extra tutoring the Kip McGrath Educational Centre provides programmes for children of primary school age through to secondary school age. If your child is musical and fancies learning the piano then why not get them booked in for lessons with Andy Smith, you never know they could be the next Liberace or Jools Holland. Helping Reluctant Readers A study published a while back and reported in The Teaching Times claimed that 42% of children have lost interest in reading by the age of eleven. If that’s true it’s incredibly sad. Blame is apportioned to politicians, teachers, the TV and internet, but blame doesn’t achieve anything. Instead, as parents what can we do to encour-age our children to engage with literature? Try these great tips to engage reluctant readers. Let them see you reading! It sounds obvious but it works. Read some funny bits from your own book aloud to them, or try an interesting newspaper article. Try to schedule a small part of the day for reading. It doesn’t even have to be them reading. My ten-year-old son still loves me to read to him…especially when I put on accents and voices to suit the characters. Lose your inhibitions and have fun with reading and your children will follow suit. Try a joke book or nonsense poetry books. Kids love jokes and rhymes, the sillier the better. They won’t even realise they are reading as they regale you with their new-found anecdotes and ditties. Use the power of movies. My ten-year-old really engaged with reading when he saw the first Harry Potter movie. He read the book straight afterwards and realised how much richer in detail it was compared with the film. From then on he was hooked. 22 Please mention when responding to our advertisers. Thank you. BEVERLEYMAG Education BeverleyMag AUGUST 2013

back into the learning process. Buy or update school uniform early - well before the end of the school break. Check out bus timetables and journey times, and if appropriate, drive the route to school if you haven’t done it before. Prepare your kids lunch boxes the night before, with a variety of healthy foods and snacks to help sustain higher energy and concentration levels throughout the day. And finally, give lots of encouragement and support as your children enter a new environment, make new friends and learn new things. Back To School Tips for Parents First day back at school can be an anxious time for both parents and children, so here are some tips to make it a more relaxed experience all round. Re-establish meal and bedtime routines at least one week before school begins. This will help your children avoid being over tired or overwhelmed by school work and activities. Review early any material the school has sent, so you can be informed about teachers, classrooms, supply requirements, important dates, bus travel etc. Buy any necessary school supplies early, such as new pencils, pens, folders and notebooks. This will help motivate your kids to be more organised. Encourage your children to spend less time in front of the TV or computer and more time participating in learning games such as reading or puzzles, to help ease them 23 BeverleyMag AUGUST 2013 Education BEVERLEYMAG To contact please email: ask@beverleymag.co.uk or telephone: 01964 552 470

Electrical Safety In Rented Homes As the number of people becoming landlords soars, research from the Electrical Safety Council (ESC) has found that misunderstandings between landlords and tenants over who is responsible for electrical safety in privately rented properties are exposing millions of people to life-threatening electrical dangers. By law, landlords must ensure electrical installations and wiring are maintained in a safe condition throughout the tenancy. The ESC recommends landlords should have electrical appliances and installations checked at least every five years, or upon change of tenancy, by a registered electrician, along with carrying out regular visual checks themselves. Landlords are encourage to ensure there is adequate RCD protection in all of their properties (an RCD is a life-saving device that reduces the risk of severe electrical fires and protects against dangerous electric shock). Currently, only approximately 30% of privately rented properties are adequately protected. Landlords can face fines of up to £20,000 for failing to maintain adequate electrical safety. A free guide is available for landlords, outlining their electrical safety responsibilities, along with an online resource outlining recommended actions for landlords and tenants, to give clarity over responsibilities – both are available at www. esc.org.uk/landlords. Tenants can help themselves by maintaining any electrical items they bring into the house and by reporting anything of concern to their landlord immediately (visit www.esc.org.uk/public/guides- and-advice/leaflets/tenants-checklist/ for advice). Tenants can ask landlords for evidence that electrical safety checks have been conducted or approved by a registered electrician, before moving in. Currently 75% of tenants asked, couldn’t recall discussing electrical safety with their landlord at any time. You should never try to carry out your own electrical repairs. 26 SOLAR PANELS Generate your electricity from sunlight with solar power AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS Heat your home with energy absorbed from the air around you CUT YOUR HEATING BILLS BY UP TO 70%! WORKING MUMS AND SCHOOL HOLIDAYS It’s a nightmare, isn’t it? Trying to decide what to do with the children for 6 weeks while you try to carry on working! They are fast approaching, so if you haven’t already, you need to work out a plan! For parents, the summer holidays are like a military operation. My kitchen calendar (I can’t do without it!) has columns for everyone so we know who is doing what, where, which day and at what time. If you’ve got grandparents around who can help, that’s a total bonus, but you can’t put on them for that long. We probably all try to take at least 2 weeks off during that time. That leaves 4 weeks to sort. Holiday clubs? Activities? Childminder? It can all get expensive. On top of that, we feel guilty because we feel like we’re palming our children off here, there and everywhere. If you’ve got any great ideas, why not share them with us? SUN GIVES YOU MORE ENERGY Isn’t it fantastic when you wake up in the morning and the sun is shining through your bedroom window? Doesn’t it just make you want to jump out of bed and get the day started? I feel so much more positive on a sunny day and it makes me much more productive, whether that’s with my work or cleaning the house! I feel re-energised and get so much more done - I feel I can tackle anything. My friend told me that she had been working from home on her laptop in the garden while her children were at school and, because the days are longer and she was full of get-up-and-go, she even did her gardening when the children were all tucked up in bed! TOO OLD TO BREAK A HABIT! We’ve all got habits we’d rather not have. Mine was biting my nails! Please note I say “was”! I have recently stopped and am rather proud of myself. It all started at a children’s party and one of the mums was talking about a “mini mani”. Everyone else was nodding their heads but I had no idea what she was talking about. I asked. From that moment on I decided I would really try to stop nibbling! And my reward? She’s going to give me my very own mini mani! Sad, but true! I then heard a story about a man in his eighties who went into his local chemist to get some “Stop ‘n’ Grow”. You know, the stuff you paint on your nails, it tastes awful and it acts as a deterrent? He’d bitten his nails all his life and he was determined to get some help to stop. It’s never too late to break a habit of a lifetime. You know what yours is – so STOP IT!
