Malcolm Brooks lives in Beverley and is the author of the ‘Eva Trilogy’, a young girl’s time-travelling adventures. His fifth and latest novel ‘Living with Certainty’ explores what it might be like for someone who knows what the future holds. Joy is a young woman from 2015 with an attitude to match. When her ‘time-travelling’ friend Eva departs, she chooses to stay in the year 1967, a time when women were not always given the respect they deserved. Being kidnapped by two thugs from London, who had just escaped from a high category prison, she has to use all her wit and knowledge of what the future holds to keep herself alive. The information that she possesses gives her power and money, but is this enough to keep her out of danger in a city run by notorious gangs? Or can love keep her safe? The books may be ordered by email at malcolm@brooks17.karoo.co.uk (free local delivery when possible!) for £6 or from Amazon/Waterstones or can be loaned from the East Riding Library Service. ‘Living with Certainty’ April 2021 Get Your Business Noticed

Literature Whether you’re looking for ways to pass the time at home or you find yourself in need of a new read, there are plenty of recent and forthcoming autobiographies to get stuck into. … Intensive Care by Gavin Francis Intensive Care is about how coronavirus emerged, spread across the world and changed all of our lives forever. But it’s not, perhaps, the story you expect. Gavin Francis is a GP who works in both urban and rural communities, splitting his time between Edinburgh and the islands of Orkney. When the pandemic arrived, he saw how it affected every walk of life: the anxious teenager, the isolated care home resident, the struggling furloughed worker and homeless ex-prisoner, all united by their vulnerability in the face of a global disaster. And he saw how the true cost of the virus was measured not just in infections, or deaths, or ITU beds, but in the consequences of the measures taken against it. In this deeply personal account of nine months spent caring for a society in crisis, Francis takes readers from rural village streets to local clinics and communal city stairways. And in telling this story, he reveals others: of loneliness and hope, illness and recovery, and of what we can achieve when we care for each other. No Such Thing As Normal by Bryony Gordon From depression and anxiety to personality disorders, one in four of us experience mental health issues every year and, in these strange and unsettling times, more of us than ever are struggling to cope. Following last year’s brilliant Glorious Rock Bottom, No Such Thing As Normal, Bryony Gordon offers sensible, practical advice, covering subjects such as sleep, addiction, worry, medication, self-image, boundary setting, therapy, learned behaviour, mindfulness and, of course – as the founder of Mental Health Mates – the power of walking and talking. She also strives to equip those in need of help with tools and information to get the best out of a poorly funded system that can be both frightening and overwhelming. The result is a lively, honest and direct guide to mental health that cuts through the Instagram-wellness bubble to talk about how each of us can feel stronger, better and just a little bit less alone. Raceless by Georgina Lawton In Georgina Lawton’s childhood home, her Blackness was never acknowledged; the obvious fact of her brown skin, ignored by her white parents. Over time, secrets and a complex family story became accepted as truth and Georgina found herself complicit in the erasure of her racial identity. It was only when her beloved father died that the truth began to emerge. Fleeing the shattered pieces of her family life and the comfortable, suburban home she grew up in, at age 22 Georgina went in search of answers – embarking on a journey that took her around the world, to the DNA testing industry, and to countless others, whose identities have been questioned, denied or erased. What do you do when your heritage or parentage has been obscured in a complex web of deceit? How can you discuss race with your family, when you each see the world differently? Raceless is both the compelling personal account of a young woman seeking her own story amid devastating family secrets, and a fascinating, challenging and essential examination of modern racial identity. Stronger by Poorna Bell Poorna Bell’s journey to get physically strong started with a heavy mattress that needed flipping and the realisation that – following the death of her husband, Rob – she had been relying on the men in her life to take out the bins, carry the luggage and move furniture. Part memoir, part manifesto, in Stronger, Poorna starts a conversation about women’s strength and fitness, tapping into the reservoir of mental strength we each have, in a way that has absolutely nothing to do with weight loss. Poorna shares her own story, as well as drawing on research and telling the stories other women who have forged their own path into strength and fitness. Now a competitive amateur powerlifter who can lift over twice her body weight, Poorna is the strongest she has ever been both physically and mentally. Weightlifting helped her to find the confidence that physical pursuits can amplify – the confidence that has been helping men to succeed in their careers their whole lives – and that women can find too. Doing away with old-fashioned notions and long-held beliefs about strength, Poorna lays out how strength can work for you, no matter what your age and goal might be. Speak Your Truth by Fearne Cotton Whether it’s through television, radio or on her Happy Place podcast, beloved presenter Fearne Cotton has made a career out of her voice. So, when her doctor told her she was at risk of needing a throat operation followed by two weeks of being unable to speak, she found herself facing a period of unexpected contemplation. As she considered what silence would mean, Fearne began to think about other times her voice had gone unheard – as a young woman, as ‘just the talent’, as the foil to louder, more dominant figures. She found herself wondering, at what point do we internalise this message, and start silencing ourselves? When do we swallow down our authentic words to become pleasers and compromisers at the cost of our own happiness or wellbeing? This new release dives into all the ways we learn to stay quiet for the wrong reasons, and explores how to find your voice, assert yourself and speak out with confidence. After all, it’s the unique Dulux blend of colour expertise and technical innovation which sets the range apart. Read more about six of our favourite shades below… Stone Green (pictured above) Stone Green is the kind of mid, grey/green with a natural connection to materials such as granite and marble. Plus, its more muted tones, which are reflected in the various flecks and seams of colour, make it ideal for use in a dining room. Easy to use and equally versatile, Green Earth and Waxed Khaki are good tonal partners, while China White and Mid Umber are a complimentary fit. Finally, Lead White and DH Blossom will help elevate the space with a more designer-style palette. The New Paint Launch You Should Know About Building on 90 years of paint expertise and innovation, Dulux has recently launched its new Heritage by Dulux range. Whether you want your space to feel light and airy or dark and dramatic, there are plenty of colour combinations from which to choose. Ultimately, what makes these colours so special is that every shade, tone or hue is rich in British heritage design. Strong or subtle, the colours all have one thing in common – timeless appeal. Here’s what else you need to know….. Romney Wool For an immaculate pale neutral, try Romney Wool. Acting as a very pale taupe, it gives off a cooler appearance than cream, and is therefore far more flexible in terms of pairing it with other colours. It also offers a strong foundation from which you can build the rest of your furnishings in any living space, and would work well on dining room walls, especially against painted units and decorative tiles. Try teaming this all-round gem with Ravens Flight and Pebble Grey for a tonal scheme, or Mallow White and Mauve Mist for an alternative winning combination. Finally, Dusted Heather and Midnight Teal offer a more dramatic choice. DH Oxford Blue Historically, a deep, sumptuous navy like DH Oxford Blue would have been exceptionally expensive to create. Luckily for the Georgians, Prussian Blue was created in 1704, offering a far more affordable alternative and the first step towards the decadent blues we enjoy today. Wonderful in a study, it’s best to embrace a dark, rich colour such as this is a small April 2021 Get Your Business Noticed

House & Home space. For a tonal scheme, try it with Blue Ribbon and Boathouse Blue, or team it with neutrals such as Edelweiss White and Quartz Grey. For a more eye-catching partnership, try it with Potters Pink and Setting Stone. Potters Pink (pictured below) Think of this as a pale, but warm, feminine shade encapsulating the fragility of Edwardian cottage garden flowers. Petal pinks were a favourite for interiors at the time, but are still very much enjoyed today. Designers will tell you to treat it as a neutral, in the same way you would a plastered wall, and it works particularly well in bedrooms and hallways. Team it with DH Blossom and Coral Pink for a tonal scheme, or Marble White and Turtledove Grey for a restful look. Alternatively, opt to pair it with DH Drab and Mud Lark to make more of a statement. Cherry Truffle (pictured bottom left) Think of this as a deep bitter chocolate, where a hint of red gives the colour some extra, decadent warmth. It works equally well as a mirror glazed gloss or velvety soft matte, lending any room some well-deserved richness. Pale Walnut and Candle Cream offer paler, but still complimentary accents, while Roman White and Mud Lark won’t fight against or challenge the colours’ existing depth. Alternatively, Red Sand and Green Earth offer a warm and balancing combination. Waxed Khaki (pictured below) This distinctive, deep grey/green combines the beauty and versatility of a cool neutral with the calming qualities of lush botanical gardens. In the late Victorian period, such shades came back into fashion, as bolder colours made way for increasingly muted, restful colours. No less fashionable now, in today’s homes we continue to appreciate the reference to nature these shades offer, especially in hallways or a home office. Try matching it with Stone Green and Green Slate, or combine it with China White and Forest Grey for a completely neutral palette. For something bolder, team it with Midnight Teal and Pale Cream. From stamp duty holidays to rising house prices, here we answer some of the key questions… Let’s start by going through some of the most recent developments for the housing market… The biggest announcement from the March budget was a widely trailed extension to the stamp duty holiday. Purchases up to £500,000 will remain exempt until June, while those up to £250,000 will pay no duty until the end of September, when the thresholds return to pre-pandemic levels. This will be a relief for buyers struggling to hit the previous March deadline but is likely to create similar anxiety for those hoping to meet the new June and September cut-offs. The second major announcement was a guarantee scheme for lenders offering 95% mortgages. The details look very similar to the Help to Buy mortgage guarantee scheme which ran between 2013 and 2017, and probably gave a small boost to higher loan-to-value lending. The new scheme may have a similar impact but is unlikely to dramatically alter the shape of the mortgage market, which has been dominated by lower loan-to- value mortgages since the global financial crisis. Does any of this have any particular bearing on house prices? According to research from Nationwide house prices rose by 0.7% in February, which more than counteracted January’s 0.3% fall. We expect modest value growth to continue this year as demand remains high and, as the budget showed, the government remains committed to supporting the housing market. The two key measures (outlined above) confirmed will support continued price growth and high-activity levels. We predict house prices may soften slightly, but will stay resilient and stable in 2021, particularly for three- and four-bedroom houses. And what about renting? The average UK rent increased 1.3% over the year to January, according to the Office for National Statistics. We don’t expect rents to drastically increase during 2021 due to the overall economic landscape. Renewal rates will remain high, but the quality of tenants and good length of tenancy will hold far more weight with landlords this year as they will want to avoid issues with rent arrears owing to the current ban on evictions as well as lengthy void periods during the pandemic. Do activity levels look good right now? Activity levels started to pick up over February, with the slow start to 2021 failing to last. Numbers of sales agreed and instructions to sell both increased towards the end of January and stayed high during February, too. Demand has been consistently stronger than supply, which has worked to support the growth in prices, while surveyors have reported that new buyer enquiries increased more than new instructions to sell in January. Concerns of a cliff edge for the housing market at the end of March have dissipated, partly due to the tax deadline extensions, but also because the already-high level of buyer demand caused by the lockdowns has continued to surge since the start of the year. This demand will be further boosted from April by the new government guarantees enabling lenders to bring back 5% deposit mortgages. While it’s not the perfect time to buy for some people who have been adversely affected by the pandemic, the record buyer demand indicates that now is the right time for many. Record low interest rates and the new focus on what your home needs to offer after several lockdowns have led us to the greatest excess of demand over supply in the last ten years. This kind of market is good news for those who are looking to put their home on the market over the traditional Easter selling season. So, is now a good time to move? Improved availability of higher loan-to-value mortgages for those with deposits of 10% or more are already increasing, which will support first-time buyers over the next 12 months. And while the momentum built up at the end 2020 is expected to support a strong start in 2021, it’s expected that older, equity-rich, long-time homeowners will continue to take a growing share of sales. Overall, it should be said that the Covid-19 situation remains incredibly volatile, and the housing market is not immune to economic forces and rising unemployment, so we have to watch carefully what the next few months bring for all of us. What is absolutely vital for anyone thinking of moving is that no matter what your motivation might be, make sure you seek solid, expert advice. April 2021 Get Your Business Noticed

Health & Beauty Rebekah’s Beauty Box Ten Best New Beauty Buys Here are the latest beauty buys I love this month…. Fenty Beauty Body Sauce Highlighter, £40 If you’re worried about baring more skin this spring/summer, you’ll love this new launch from Fenty. Designed to blur imperfections and tint skin with light, even coverage, this new highlighter is like a liquid bronzer for your entire body. It has a gel-cream consistency that blends seamlessly, leaving behind a believable, sun kissed glow that looks healthy – never fake. Apply it with your hands or use a large, fluffy brush to buff it into the skin. Once it’s set, it won’t budge, but you’ll find it rinses off easily, so it’s ideal for tan phobes or those who don’t want to commit to something for longer than a day. Available At Boots.com NARS Euphoria Face Dew, £25 I’m a big fan of NARS’ new Face Dew. Multi-purpose, it’s a highlighter and blusher in one, lending skin a healthy, glossy sheen with no unnecessary glitter. Apply it directly onto the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and chin, or anywhere the light usually hits for extra definition. We love dabbing it onto eyelids, too, for a wet, dewy and on-trend finish. Likewise, tap it on top of any matte lipsticks for a 3D finish and plumping effect. A little goes a long way, so you don’t have to worry about using it up too quickly, either. Available At CultBeauty.co.uk Davines Heart of Glass Sheer Glaze, £22.50 Hair glazes have become hugely popular over the past year. Designed to hydrate, smooth and protect, they’re great for this in-between period when you can’t visit any salons. Cue Davines latest launch, which is particularly effective on blonde hair. It uses botanical oils to boost strength and elasticity, while the glassy sheen naturally lightens hair to leave it looking brighter. Use seven to ten drops on towel dried hair, combing it through before styling properly for best results. The recyclable, plastic packaging is a bonus, too. Available At LibertyLondon.com Klorane Sun Radiance Protective Oil, £11 A summer staple, this uses UVA and UVB filters to protect the hair against the damaging effects of the sun, as well as chlorine and salt. Apply it directly to dry strands before heading out or spritz it onto wet hair to give it an extra dose of moisture. Whichever way you choose to apply it, you’ll enjoy soft, silky results with extra shine, too. Great for those with coloured or highlighted hair. Available At Sanareva.co.uk Reverie Mare Mediterranean Sea Mist, £30 This new, does-it-all hair mist is designed for anyone looking to give their strands a bit of texture and grit. It uses botanical oils to hydrate and strengthen, while rice seed boosts volume to create a cool-girl wave that looks like you’ve just come out the sea. Try misting it into hair when it’s flipped upside down, then scrunch the formula in for a tousled effect. The vanilla, bergamot and lemon scent is a plus, too – think summer in a bottle. Available At Revolve.com CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum, £17 It’s no secret we’re huge fans of CeraVe here at SheerLuxe, thanks to their affordable, yet effective, products. After launching in the UK with a concise and strong line, they’re now expanding it to include a new HA Serum. Set to be a bestseller, it has a jelly-esque texture that’s not only satisfying, but hugely hydrating, too. What’s more, it’s lightweight, so it sinks in fast, delivering moisture at speed, while ceramides (the brand’s cult ingredient) work hard to lock everything in. A moisturiser-serum hybrid, it suits all skin types – from sensitive to oily. Available At Cerave.com IsnTree Hyaluronic Acid Aqua Gel Cream, £16 If you’ve never heard of this Korean brand before, keep it on your radar. Their formulas are second to none, with nourishing ingredients that are proven to work. This Gel Cream is a firm favourite among fans, thanks to its ability to hydrate and simultaneously balance excess oil. Ideal for anyone suffering with acne and breakouts, but still wanting to maintain high levels of moisture within their skin, it’s also alcohol-free and non-comodegenic, so it never strips the skin or causes further inflammation or flare-ups. Available At BeautyAndSeoul.co.uk Maya Njie Les Fleurs, £90 If you love floral fragrances, this one’s for you. Blending bergamot with magnolia and floral musks, it’s light and fresh – ideal for this time of year. Added fig and woodsy notes bring a unisex appeal to it, too, while the chic, paired back bottle wins out on aesthetics. A must-try for those who love the kind of niche scents that set you apart. When you can, post-lockdown, we recommend giving it a spritz in Liberty to get more of a feel for it. Available At MayaNjie.com Escentric M+ Molecule 01 Patchouli, £95 Fans of Escentric Molecule are guaranteed to love the latest addition to their cult range. Launching just in time for spring and summer, a combination of musk and patchouli offers a warm, yet feminine floral scent. The musk soon dries down into a fresh, lightweight layer that lasts on the skin for hours – it’s so unique, it’s guaranteed to earn you compliments. Available At CultBeauty.co.uk Carolina Herrera Lip Liquid Velvet, £21 These new Lip Liquids promise better longevity – and they certainly deliver. Budge-proof, they dry down fast – you need to work quickly – with a rich, matte colour that stays put all day. But despite their long-lasting formula, they don’t feel dry or cakey, thanks to their hydrating texture. Amp up the colour by applying several coats, or mute it down by applying it with your finger. If you choose to do the latter, use your ring finger to push the product into the lip – this will give a plump, powdery effect that’s firmly on-trend right now. From The East Riding Archives For most of us, our main experience of dance is on the sticky floor of a nightclub, under the influence of too much booze (at least, it was, before Covid!), where putting one foot in front of the other is challenge enough, let alone following the steps of a waltz or foxtrot. In recent years TV programmes such as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ have helped to educate and refine our knowledge of ‘dance’ in general, but how did people ‘get down and boogie’ in this region hundreds of years ago? We’ve been taking a look and discovered a few items that help shed some light on the matter. Documents ranging from 1763- 1820 show that there was a strict etiquette to be followed when attending an establishment for an evening of dance. Nowadays, the closest you may get to etiquette in a nightclub is the dress code, but if you went to the Beverley Assembly Rooms in 1763 (now the site of Regal Court flats) there was a code to follow for everything. A season ticket had to be bought to gain access to this 18th century ‘nightclub’, where the candles were to be “lighted at seven o’clock” and “no more be allowed or admitted to be lighted up that night.” For refreshment, you would have had a choice of tea, coffee, wine, or negus (a hot drink of port, sugar, lemon, and spice), served up by Mrs Webster. By 1820, little had changed, as minutes for the Assembly rooms committee reveal that “the rooms shall open at eight o’clock, and the music shall attend at half past eight… the dancing shall commence at nine o’clock precisely” . The rules also state that the dancing should be in the order of a country dance, followed by two ‘quadrilles’, another country dance, break for tea, two more ‘quadrilles’, then alternate country dances and quadrilles for the rest of the evening until no later than two o’clock. Each lady, on entering the room, had to draw a number for her place in the country dance, and gentlemen could “engage their partners for one country dance only, or for two quadrilles”. Formal dance functions have been around for centuries and only recently fell out of mainstream popularity. Until the rise of pop music, buildings like the Beverley Assembly Rooms were the only places to go for dancing. Of course dance in its various forms, including country dancing, remains a hugely popular pastime for many people, but will we ever see places like the Beverley Assembly Rooms making their way back into mainstream culture? 17 Education To Advertise Please Telephone 01964 552 470 COLLEGE AND HUMBERSIDE POLICE FORCE: Bishop Burton College has announced an official partnership with Humberside Police Force. The agreement means that students at the College will benefit from industry led employability workshops, delivered by Humberside Police Force employees. Workshops will cover a broad range of topics, including hostage negotiation, forensics, armed response, covert operations and dog handling, as well as many other key roles and skills. Teaching will be delivered with a mix of theory and practical experiences and students will also gain access to guest speaking / observation opportunities, as well as being able to take part in training sessions as ‘scenario participants’. An important aspect of the partnership is work experience - students are guaranteed opportunities to complete enhanced work experience with the specialist operations team in areas such as behavioural profiling, chemical and explosive testing, hazardous operations, riot training and counter terrorism, to name a few. A recent increase in demand for Uniformed Public Service and related courses at the College, supported by the implementation of a new Forensic and Criminology offer, has led to the creation of the official partner status. A brand new Level 3 Policing qualification is also being launched in September this year, further enhancing the Public Service qualification provision at the College. Humberside Police have been actively involved in the development of this new qualification content, meaning that students will learn the relevant topics, skills and knowledge which are high on the Force’s agenda. Bill Meredith, Principal and CEO at Bishop Burton College said, “We are delighted to be able to work so closely with Humberside Police Force. The partnership solidifies our relationship and presents unique and exclusive opportunities for our students. We are excited about the future of this relationship and on behalf of our students, our staff, wider College community and Humberside Police Force.” Ruth Campion, Search Lead and Police Search Adviser for Humberside Police said; “We are delighted to announce our official partnership with Bishop Burton College. We have developed a programme with Bishop Burton which will ensure that all students will get to experience over 30 job opportunities within the special operations unit. The knowledge and skills gained from working with both the College staff and the Police Force, will give students a fantastic insight into the special operations division and really prepare them for a career within the Force.” Applications are being taken NOW for September 2021 start. Food & Drink You WILL find many examples of Languedoc wine on our shelves but there’s a current campaign by the Pays D’Oc to promote them generally to demonstrate the diversity found across the region and as a result I was sent three samples to taste. The hope is they will become available in the future. Old Star Carignan Noir, from the family winery run by Olivier Coste is an example of 100 per cent Carignan. The fact that it’s not a blend is relatively rare but is what makes it so special. Aromas of dark stewed fruit and spice make it delightful to drink on its own or with hearty, rustic, meals. Currently it costs 8 euros in France. Les Jamelles Le Beillon is another example of a 100 per cent Carignan red wine and a step up in class (it currently sells for 19.95 euros). It offers an exquisite variety of aromas and flavours: dark fruit (blueberry, blackberry), floral notes (elderflower) and a spicy finish (pepper) with a delicate hint of menthol. Stews or venison dishes would be a perfect match. Finally, I tried a biodynamic Syrah - Secret De Lunes, which was a revelation. Very aromatic, it offered a lovely freshness, fruit notes mixing with subtle toast aromas. This wine, currently selling for 9.8 euros, would go well with red meats, either grilled or with a sauce. I do hope we see these wines on Uk shelves in the future; in the meantime do look our for some Pays d’Oc wines already on sale. Until next month stay safe Roy though, have been given the chance to express themselves freely by the region’s creative winegrowers, under the watchful eye and stringent palates of the custodians of the Pays d’Oc IGP designation. The traditional southern varieties that are Grenache, Carignan, Syrah, Viognier and Rolle (aka Vermentino), which double up as appellation mainstays, feature both as stand- alone varieties and in red, white and rosé blends, again ramping up the region’s diversity. Of those just mentioned, it’s Carignan that I really have a soft spot for, ever since I visited the Fitou wine region, and more specifically the village of Tuchon, as the guest of the local wine co-operative. Carignan is traditionally the signature grape variety in Fitou, although today it shares prominence with Grenache. For almost a century Carignan was regarded as a high-volume, cheap wine, or as a variety to be blended with more “noble” varieties to provide freshness. Under the Pays d’Oc IGP label it is possible to discover its potential, with rare fine wines coming from old vineyards and some new plantations. While Grenache gave fruit and sugar, Carignan was known for its tannins and acidity. This acidity which was regarded for so long as being a disadvantage is today recognised as offering attractive vibrancy. Carignan even has its own fan club. I’m a member. Styles can range from vibrant wild berry fruit and a crunchy character to intense spice, blue-black Cassis fruit, rich black chocolate and amazing acidity. So, to those wines not yet on sale in the UK . . . Each EU country has its own quality categories which correspond to both a PDO and a PGI; in France the former is AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) while the latter is VDP (Vin de Pays). It’s those AOC and Vin de Pays terms that you are most likely to see on the labels of the wines you buy. So, back to the Languedoc . . . The PGI/IGP category is further sub-divided into geographical areas and the IGP Pays d’Oc covers the Languedoc-Rousillon, one of the largest wine-growing areas of France, producing the majority of the country’s IGP wines; hence the argument that it is the most important. The Pays d’Oc spans an extensive area running from the Pyrenees along the Spanish border to the Camargue. It runs parallel with a 200-kilometre stretch of the Mediterranean coastline yet also extends inland over rolling hills and mountain foothills. This 120,000-hectare swathe of vineyards fosters a variety of weather patterns and soil types, that unleashes huge potential for a selection of classic, native varieties. But when you combine them with an eclectic choice of 58 permitted grapes, the possibilities are endless. Some of the varieties such as Riesling or Gewurtztraminer may seem counter-intuitive, whilst others - like Tempranillo and Nielluccio - are a long way from home. All of them, Slightly strange, I know, but I want to write about some wines that you can’t actually buy in this country, right now. Hopefully that will change soon but the important point is that it gives me a chance to write about a region whose wines I really love.. It may come as a surprise if I say that my favourite French wine region is the Languedoc-Roussillon. And while it may not have the immediate glamour, say, of Bordeaux, Burgundy or the Rhone, I would argue it has a claim to be the most important. To explain why, it’s necessary to explain a little of the complicated way wines are classified in France (and the rest of the EU). As a way of maintaining quality and consistency, wine is classified in two product categories - they are either a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), which means they are “produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area, using recognised know-how”, or PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), which, to confuse matters even more is usually referred to as an IGP. Broadly speaking, it means a product closely linked to the geographical area in which it is produced, processed or prepared, and which has specific qualities attributable to that geographical area. Motoring Mazda is joining the electric revolution with its battery-powered MX-30 compact SUV. At a glance it’s very similar to the Japanese brand’s more conventional CX-30 but with rearward opening back doors, lashings of environmentally-friendly features and superb all-round handling the MX-30 will get the neighbours talking. With zero emissions and fine performance, the MX-30 is set to carve out a niche for itself as a keenly- priced family car that competes with the best of its electric rivals. That said, the price went up £500 before I got the chance to put the test car through kits paces. Blame it on the Government - which that very day lopped £500 off its previous £3,000 electric vehicle sweetener grant. Which must mean the Whitehall mandarins reckon we don’t need as much tempting to turn to plug-in power as we used to, hoping to turn a trickle into a charge. Initially, four trim levels will be offered with the line starting from £26,045 which,in the current EV world, is highly competitive. The range will top out with high specification GT Sport Tech models costing from £30,345 with mid-grade Sport Lux versions sitting in the middle at £28,045. For the time being Mazda is also offering the MX-30 in First Edition specification priced from £28,445 and these come with adaptive LED lights at the front, more at the rear, a satin finish side panel in the trim as well as an eco-friendly interior that can be found on all versions with grey or man-made leather seat upholstery made from recycled plastic bottles. All versions have a high equipment list that includes a reversing camera, cruise control, sat nav and a heads-up display as standard. The MX-30 has a city-friendly range of up to 165 miles on a full charge and in everyday use Mazda says it should be capable of around 124 miles before needing to be plugged in. That’s similar to what can be expected from the electric version of the MINI and the Honda-e and Mazda says its research indicates that most drivers travel less than 30 miles on a daily basis. Recharging from a fast charger can be done up to 80 per cent of battery capacity in 36 minutes. A full charge from a home charging point will take around five hours. Each model comes with a Type 2 AC charging cable and a socket for DC rapid charging and the car’s recharging point is situated on the rear offside wing, On the road it is as complete a family car as can be imagined and the Sport Lux model we tried was showing an available range of 116 miles at the start of our drive. Fiftysix miles of good motoring took the car’s battery capacity down to 45 per cent and the remaining range to 58 miles with the onboard trip computer revealing we could have added a further 16 miles to our range had we not been using the climate control system. The MX-30’s systems can also be hooked up to a smartphone app for remote use and monitoring and give information about all aspects of operation including how long it will take to recharge as well as allowing for journey routes to be loaded and for the car to be pre-heated before you get in. It’s all very civilised and makes the MX-30 as well equipped as some EVs costing almost twice as much. Performance data reveals a 0 to 62 acceleration time of 9.7 seconds from the car’s 145 horsepower powertrain, with a maximum speed of 87mph. Boot capacity ranges from 366 litres to 1,171 litres with the rear seats folded – and that’s much more than that of the electric version of the MINI or the Honda-e. The MX-30 we sampled sat on 18-inch alloys and its SUV-like styling was embellished with body protection running from bumper to bumper and around the wheel arches and sills. It’s a stylish take on design and the MX-30 feels a real driver’s car with precise steering, quiet running embellished by a faint “real car” noise from a sound generator and regenerative braking allowing for single pedal use. The regeneration settings – which boost the car’s range by putting power back into the battery under braking - are controlled via paddle shifters either side of the steering wheel and offer two levels to help get the best out of the electric motor. Other handy features include an auto-hold function for the electronic parking brake which is sited on an elevated central control panel above a sizeable device storage area complete with two USB ports and a 12-volt outlet. An 8.8-inch widescreen display The New Mazda MX-30 The push towards persuading all of us to go electric when we go motoring is gathering pace; witness the new all-electric Mazda MX-30. 23 Motoring To Advertise Please Telephone 01964 552 470 screen sits at the top of the dashboard with a secondary seven- inch colour touchscreen to control the ventilation settings sited aft of the gear lever on the central console. There’s also a seven-inch TFT display contained in the instrument panel to give the driver extra information about the car’s status and performance. The cabin is designed to seat five in some comfort and the MX-30’s “freestyle” doors are something of a wow factor. Mazda had a similar arrangement on its RX-8 rotary engined sports coupe some 10 years ago but the set up on the MX-30 is much more practical. With specially-designed hinges that prevent the rear doors opening independently, the front doors of the MX-30 open to an angle of 82 degrees allowing the back doors to be released to an 80 degree angle. As such there is easy access to either the front or back seats with a wide, pillarless opening with rear seat entry helped by a clever folding mechanism which moves the front seat forward at a single touch. And while the rear side windows may be on the small side there is an adequate view out and the whole interior has a high class feel. Safety systems include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keeping and emergency braking as well as a driver attention monitor. Realistically, there is little missing and for a car that is little bigger than a Ford Focus a whole lot has been included with considerable style. The MX-30 is a car for the modern age – electric, well equipped and packed with panache yet one that handles so sweetly it cannot fail to leave a smile on your face. Days Out & Travel Now reopen for Takeaways every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 16th May Reopen outside from Friday 16th April Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s only until 16th May Booking is recommended we will be running a 2 hour limit on a table policy ‘New outside area’ which is covered, heated and lit up National Parks within driving distance Going abroad feels a bit of a way off, but if you’re bored of the same local walking routes, it might be time to start planning a trip to one of the the National Parks ready for when restrictions begin to ease. North York Moors A nature lover’s dream, the North York Moors are home to an abundance of wildlife and some seriously stunning views. Located in north east of Yorkshire, there are more than 1,400 miles of public footpaths to explore, as well as the famous Cleveland Way National Trail – a 109- mile walking route. In late summer, visitors can spot roe deer in the ancient woodland areas, plus seals, dolphins, and even whales along its 26-mile coastline. History buffs will appreciate the various landmarks and historical sites that date back to the Iron Age, while bookworms should head to the 18th-century Castle Howard, the backdrop to Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited. The park is also great for cycling – among other activities – and is one of the best places on this list for mountain biking, too. Visit NorthYorkMoors.org.uk Yorkshire Dales Situated in North Yorkshire, this stunning national park covers 860sq. m. of land. The area is best explored over the course of a weekend, with highlights including the Gordale Scar ravines, Malham Cove (an ancient limestone amphitheatre), Malham Tarn Lake, and the beautiful Aysgarth Falls (pictured). Within the park, there are four dales to explore – Wensleydale, Swaledale, Wharfedale and Malhamdale – as well as several villages and historical landmarks nearby that are worth venturing out to – Bolton Abbey Estate and Pendragon Castle make a great day out. Once you’ve finished exploring, don’t miss the Wensleydale Experience – a great lunch spot. Visit YorkshireDales.org.uk Peak District Spread across Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Staffordshire, and Cheshire, the Peak District National Park covers 555 sq. m. of beautiful landscape. It was the first national park to be established in England, and attracts thousands of visitors each year thanks to its rugged terrain, which is ideal for mountain climbing, horse riding and cycling. There are hundreds of walking routes to choose from, but one of the best is the Curbar Edge walk which is seven miles long and takes around three to four hours to complete. Starting at the village of Curbar in the Derbyshire Dales, the route passes Grindleford and Froggatt – two quaint villages that are both worst a visit. If you’re up for the challenge, try the Rowtor Rock walk, which beings in Birchover. Both are fairly steep with rugged terrain, so you’ll need proper walking boots. Local News £203,975 of lottery funding will enable community transport groups in the East Riding get more people to their hospital appointments in a new project that is to be called Home to Hospital (H2H). The Holderness Area Rural Transport (HART) and Goole Gofar, working under the umbrella East Yorkshire Community Transport (EYCT), have been successful in their bid to the lottery for funding which will help them deliver transport services to residents in the Bridlington, Goole and Howden area who need to attend hospital appointments at Hull and Scarborough hospitals. In 2008, the two well-established transport groups came together and formed EYCT to enable them to work together in partnership, sharing resources and information to help secure the community transport offer. The groups have worked throughout the last 12 months to ensure their passengers were able to attend local hospitals and access centres to receive their vaccinations. Further funding from the lottery will now secure the future of the groups for a further three years. Councillor Gary McMaster, portfolio holder for enhancing communities, said: “We are delighted to continue to support the East Yorkshire Community Transport group and are pleased to see the successful bid for further lottery funding. “The last twelve months has proven how vital this community transport offering is to our communities with really important trips to the local hospitals and vaccination centres. We are pleased to continue to work Lottery funding for community transport groups in the East Riding closely with the EYCT to benefit our residents.” Cllr Jane Evison, chair of EYCT, added: “We are very pleased to have been awarded this amazing grant which allows us to continue helping those people who live in our towns & villages to get to hugely important hospital appointments. “The HART service was particularly well received in Bridlington when the existing transport to the Scarborough and Hull hospitals was withdrawn over a year ago, this money will now allow us to help far more people. “I am also aware that the service is under great demand in the Goole and Howden area. At a time when people need our services and support more than ever, we are delighted to be able to offer our help. “We work closely with East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s transportation team to ensure our services compliment those already on offer and our thanks to the council for the tremendous support we receive. “The award of this grant from the lottery provides the financial security we need to reach our more vulnerable residents and also work to attract more volunteers into our groups to help deliver them.” April 2021 Get Your Business Noticed Easter Colouring Competition Winners The annual Easter Colouring Competition that we run in the magazine was as popular as ever with over a thousand entries. All we can hope is that the players can hold their nerve and we sharpen up our finishing. City could have scored six or seven today against Northampton but they are not sufficiently clinical despite being one of the top scoring sides in the division. If they only took one in every three or our opportunities they would probably been around ten points clear by now as there have been so many games were points were dropped despite having opportunities to finish off opponents. Our finishing and Grant McCann’s tactical nous remain the two issues which could yet decide if they can seal promotion. If any of our opponents pack their midfield to stifle the McCann game plan we struggle and then it could be down to taking the small number of opportunities created. One thing we can say is that we are the best team in the division for dead ball situations so promotion may come down to someone getting their head to another of the free-kicks or corners from George Honeyman or Callum Elder. Maybe Jacob Greaves will finally score from one of these opportunities to take us up. Fingers crossed we can make it over the line within forty six games or via the play-offs. We certainly did not expect this as a possibility after the six month disaster at the end of last years campaign. UTT. Hull City Column by Woody Mellor We are now reaching the most tense period of the season where no games can taken for granted and most fixtures involve sides trying to avoid relegation, teams fighting to make the top six and the top three fighting for automatic promotion and avoid the lottery of the play-offs. Even though Hull City have twice been promoted to the Premier League by Play-off victories at Wembley I would not be confident as much this season. There are teams coming into form such as Blackpool and managers such as Adkins at Charlton or Cowley at Portsmouth who would appear to have more tactical and big game nous than Grant McCann if it came to two legged semi-finals or the big game in London. If City can play to full potential then hopefully they can achieve their ambition via the play-offs but automatic promotion has to be the aim. Its not as though there would even be a full house at Wembley for the play-offs, few if anyone is likely to see this so it will just be another game on I-Follow or Sky! There are six games remaining to achieve promotion. If we win every game no one should catch us but with games in hand and three teams so close it could go to the wire with City’s final game at Charlton who now have Nigel Adkins in charge of their play-off challenge and they sit on seventh spot. We don’t want Charlton to ruin our party like the first game following the last season’s fixture suspension. City avoided relegation if the season was cancelled but as soon as we resumed Charlton and all the other relegation rivals went past us following on from Charlton’s victory at the KCom live on our laptops. The remaining fixtures are three potentially winnable games of Plymouth away and both Fleetwood and Wigan at home. There are three hard fixtures of Sunderland at home, Lincoln away and Charlton on the final day. No games can be guaranteed and our rivals also have hard fixtures themselves. The biggest game of the season is Sunderland at home on Tuesday April 20th. Sunderland changed managers in November and are on a fantastic run of form which has taken them from mid-table to potential champions as well as winners of the Mickey Mouse Cup at Wembley a couple of weeks ago. We have had some big games against them over the past decade such as FA Cup Quarter Final victory in 2014 and the home defeat in April 2017 which scuppered the Marco Silva great escape plan in the Premier League. The April fixture could decide the title or who can make the automatic positions. There could have been a decent game for this too, the Allam’s would probably give them the entire West Stand if fans were allowed for this one. Squeaky backside time again After a very successful Easter weekend Hull City enter the home straight of the season five points clear of third position and eighteen points above the seventh team, so we can be fairly confident of reaching the play-offs at least this season. It has become obvious however that we are are in a three horse race fighting for the two automatic promotion places. City are currently three points above Peterborough and five above Sunderland though Peterborough have a game in hand and Sunderland have two games as well as a fixture in Hull later in the month.. Money & Finances Money saving apps: The five best apps to help you save for a house deposit Yolt Good for: budgeting Track your savings and outgoings in one place, set goals and view a ‘total balance’ across all your bank accounts. There’s a quirky ‘stealth mode’ which turns your money into a different currency and amount should you need to show accounts to anyone without oversharing. Cons: you have to sign up for the prepaid debit card – similar to Monzo. Currently there isn’t a web app, you can only use it on smart- phones. Chip Good for: automatic saving An AI-enabled app that pulls small but manageable amounts from your bank account into the Chip account depending on things like payday and spending habits. The whole idea is that you won’t miss the money you save. Cons: the first £100 you save is a free trial, then at a cost of £1.50 every 28 days. When you decide to withdraw funds it can take a couple of days for them to appear in your bank account if done over a weekend. Plum Good for: serious saving Adjustable moods change how much you save each month, from ‘shy’ to ‘beast’ mode. It’s similar to Chip in many ways, but with the added feature of allowing you to invest your savings. A ‘rainy day’ fea- ture allows the app to save or invest every time it rains, too. Cute. Cons: some features, the invest- ing service and savings challenges are only available with a Plum Pro account which costs £2.99 a month after a trial. Moneybox Good for: beginner investors Invest or save your round-ups and make scheduled or one-off deposits into one of three investment options – cautious, balanced or adventurous. Cons: the management costs can add up, it’s £1 a month after the first three months plus a small percentage of the amount held in your account. Starling Bank Good for: multiple goals As with other banking apps, round up your purchases to save without even really noticing. Deposit cheques up to £500 from your mobile phone by taking a picture through the app and save into separate pots for different targets: home deposit, hen dos, 21 June… Cons: deals listed in the Market- place section may not be the best available rate, but one partnership with CreditLadder is specifically aimed at renters who can build up a history of on-time payments and boost credit scores - useful for home-buying further down the line. Gardening April is a busy time in the veg garden, as lots of seeds can be sown this month. Now that the days are longer and warmer, you can start sowing some crops, such as carrots or peas, outside. More tender crops like aubergines and courgettes, still need to be sown under glass, either in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill. You can also plant out potatoes, as well as onions sets, shallots and garlic and Jerusalem artichokes. Aubergines, chillies and tomatoes This is the last chance to sow aubergines, chillies and tomatoes, which need a long growing season to do well. If you only want a few plants, you could wait until next month and buy plants at the garden centre. Beetroot Beetroot is an easy crop to grow, making it ideal for beginners. It will grow in any fertile, well drained soil and also does well in containers. Follow the spacing on the packet and thin the seedlings to about 10cm when they are around 3cm high. Harvest when the beets have reached golf ball size. Carrots Sow carrots on well-prepared soil that is free of stones – stony soil results in forked carrots. At this time of year, it is a good idea to protect against carrot fly, by putting up a barrier around the crop. Celeriac Celeriac needs a long growing season for an autumn/winter harvest, so sow now, under cover. Transfer the seedlings to individual pots when they are large enough to handle. Courgettes, marrow, squashes, cucumbers and pumpkins Courgettes, marrows, squashes, cucumbers and pumpkins are known as curcurbits, and can all be sown in the same way – in individual 5cm pots, under cover. Plant outside once the danger of frost has passed (cucumbers often do best in a greenhouse). Leeks Leeks can be sown in seed trays under cover in April, for harvesting from autumn onwards. Lettuce Lettuce is best sown under cover in April. Sow it in seed trays or modules, for transplanting outside later in spring. Peas Peas are easy to grow and can be harvested early in summer, making them a welcome early crop. You can sow them direct outside, but they are a favourite snack for mice – if these are a problem, sow them indoors and plant the plants outside when they are 15cm tall. Alternatively, sow in guttering and transplant the whole row of seedlings into a trench when they’re ready. Radish This fast-growing crop is easy to grow and is a good ‘catch crop’, growing on empty ground that is waiting for other crops, or between slower growing crops. Sow direct outside, every three to four weeks, for a continuous supply throughout summer. Spinach Spinach can be sown directly outside in April; if it’s chilly, cover with fleece. Spinach needs lots of moisture and protection from slugs and snails. Swiss chard Swiss chard is a beautiful crop for a sunny or partially shaded spot and can be sown directly outside in April. Turnip Turnips are also quick-growing. Harvest them when young, when they are golf ball size, or eat the leaves as greens. Keep well watered. Jobs to do in April This month’s timely tips are all about getting a head start in the garden. Flowers Sow hardy annuals, such as love-in- a-mist and pot marigolds, as well as native wildflowers, into gaps in borders. Enjoy instant colour by planting primulas and polyanthus in pots and at the front of borders. Protect the new shoots of hostas, delphiniums, lupins and other vulnerable plants from slugs and snails. Continue deadheading spring bulbs and bedding, so they don’t waste energy setting seed. Plant pineapple lily (eucomis) bulbs in pots for exotic-looking summer flowers. Sow sweet peas at the base of supports, and transplant those sown in autumn into their final positions. Spray the new leaves of disease- prone roses with fungicide to control mildew, rust and blackspot. Take basal cuttings from clumps of perennials, such as delphiniums, campanulas and lupins. Prune hydrangeas, cutting back the old stems to a healthy shoot lower down. What To Plant In Your Vegetable Garden April 2021 Get Your Business Noticed

This is the last chance to sow aubergines, chillies and tomatoes, which need a long growing season to do well. Sow them under cover. Wildlife Plant native hedges now to encourage more wildlife. Most garden wildlife is busy in April. Many bumblebees and birds will be establishing nests and plenty of other species, such as moths, leaf miners and other insects, are already breeding. Hedgehogs, which typically emerge from hibernation in March, will be fattening up to be in good condition for breeding in May. Most frogs and toads will have left ponds after breeding, in search of damp shelter such as beneath a log or brick pile.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT By Fiona Dwyer, broadcast journalist, PR & media consultant, slave to 2 children and a husband. THINGS TO DO THIS SPRING I love the springtime. It’s Eastertide, a time for new life, new beginnings and new possibilities. I want to kickstart a health and fitness campaign. I want to eat better and do more regular exercise, as well as my 2 daily dog walks. Sorting out my wardrobe is also right up there at the top of my list. I always feel better after a good declutter. Hopefully, the weather will stay dry so we can get out into the garden and get cracking on our outdoor kitchen project (I say ‘we’ when I really mean my husband! I’ll help, of course - I’m good at providing refreshments!) And what’s even better is that I will finally be able to have my hair cut as salons reopen this month. Have you got your appointment booked yet?!!!! WOMEN IN BUSINESS I just want to give a big shout out to a wonderful networking group in our area – Women in Business – which I am proud to be a member of. During the past year they have been a lifeline and an inspiration to many of us. They have continued to put on webinars, Lunch and Learn sessions and social events as well as provide a friendly ear and sounding board. If you are a woman already in business or you are thinking of setting up your own business this year, I thoroughly recommend joining us. It’s a not-for-profit organization for professional women on both sides of the Humber, which supports and encourages us all to get to know each other and form new friendships and business contacts. I have met some amazing women and formed some lasting friendships over the years. For more information visit www.womeninbusinesshull. co.uk. I hope to see you at our next event. HEALTHY BREAKFAST IDEA This is a really great idea which you have probably already heard about, but I have never tried it, so thought I would suggest it anyway! Overnight Oats! Sounds just what I need for my health campaign. Basically, you just add milk and some frozen or fresh berries to some rolled oats and put in the fridge overnight.
